  • Exploring ways to improve reuse between Industrial Embedded Systems and Discrete Event Simulators
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation, ETFA. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.. - 9781728129891
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Industrial real-time software is commonly evaluated on real embedded systems, while simulators are less used, since the abstraction level and purpose vary with for example, different programming languages and run-time contexts. This paper extends, applies, and evaluates previous work on a flexible task design that improve code reuse between discrete event simulators and embedded real-time systems. The paper focuses on two parts: (i) The performance cost of the proposed design in practice, by comparing the flexible task design with a traditional threaded approach. (ii) The potential of an alternative way to support legacy code in combination with discrete event simulation. The experiments indicate an almost negligible performance cost with respect to the real-time behavior, i.e., latency and jitter, while enabling improved code reuse between discrete event simulation and industrial embedded real-time systems.

  • Scheduling of electrical loads in home automation systems
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: IEEE International Conference on Automation Science and Engineering. - : IEEE Computer Society. - 9781467381833 ; , s. 1307-1312
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we propose a novel approach to schedule electric loads with the aim of reducing households' energy cost or CO2 emission with acceptable change in comfort. The approach involves both shifting households' electrical loads to times when the electricity prices or CO2 intensities are low, and reducing households' electrical loads at times when electricity prices or CO2 intensities are high. This approach assumes availability of day ahead hourly data of CO2 emissions and/or electricity cost from the external service provider. We categorize energy loads in two groups; constant and one-shot loads. Constant loads ensure environmental comfort for a consumer (e.g., heating, ventilation), while one-shot loads have a more dynamic nature (e.g., smart appliances, EV charging). Our approach is a best effort approach suitable for resource constrained embedded systems.

  • Handling aperiodic tasks in diverse real-time systems via plug-ins
  • 2002
  • Ingår i: Proceedings - 5th IEEE International Symposium on Object-Oriented Real-Time Distributed Computing, ISORC 2002. - 0769515584 - 9780769515588 ; , s. 137-144
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Functionality for various services of scheduling algorithms is typically provided as extensions to a basic algorithm. A similar approach dominates operating system functionality: implementation of the actual real-time scheduling algorithm. In this paper, we propose the use of a plug-in approach to add functionality to existing scheduling schemes and provide for easy, replacement on the operating system level. In particular, we present an architecture to disentangle actual real-time scheduling from dispatching and other kernel routines with a small API, suited for a variety of scheduling schemes as plug-ins. We detail two plug-ins for aperiodic task handling and how they can extend two target systems, table-driven and earliest deadline first scheduling, using the approach presented.
