  • Evaluation of an algorithm ascertaining cases of osteonecrosis of the jaw in the Swedish National Patient Register
  • 2013
  • In: Clinical Epidemiology. - Macclesfield : Dove Medical Press Ltd.. - 1179-1349. ; 5:1, s. 1-7
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background: Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a medical condition associated with antiresorptive drugs, among others, used to treat osteoporosis and bone metastasis. Currently, there is no consensus regarding the definition of ONJ, and no ONJ-specific International Classification of Diseases-10 code exists. Therefore, register-based studies of this condition may be troublesome.Purpose: To evaluate an algorithm ascertaining ONJ cases in an attempt to facilitate future assessments of ONJ in clinical and epidemiological studies. Methods: By means of the Patient Register and the Prescribed Drug Register, we identified all postmenopausal female residents in Sweden from 2005 through 2009. To identify potential cases of ONJ, we employed an algorithm including the following conditions: periapical abscess with sinus, inflammatory conditions of jaws, alveolitis of jaws, idiopathic aseptic necrosis of bone, osteonecrosis due to drugs, osteonecrosis due to previous trauma, other secondary osteonecrosis, other osteonecrosis, and unspecified osteonecrosis. Women seen at departments of oral and maxillofacial surgery, with at least one of the conditions, were classified as potential cases of ONJ. Conditions in anatomic sites other than the jaw were excluded. Validation was performed through medical record review. Case confirmation was based on the ONJ definition by the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. The algorithm was evaluated by positive predictive values (PPVs) stratified by diagnosis. Results: For the 87 potential cases identified through our algorithm, the medical records were obtained for 83. The overall PPV was 18% (95% confidence interval (CI) 10%–28%). The highest PPV was observed in osteonecrosis due to drugs (83%, 95% CI 36%–100%). Several diagnoses had a PPV of 0 or were not used at all (periapical abscess with sinus, alveolitis of jaws, idiopathic aseptic necrosis of bone, osteonecrosis due to previous trauma, other secondary osteonecrosis, other osteonecrosis, and unspecified osteonecrosis). Conclusion: It was possible to ascertain cases of ONJ from the Swedish registers using this algorithm; however, the PPV was low. Thus, further refinements of the algorithm are necessary. © 2013 Bergdahl et al, publisher and licensee Dove Medical Press Ltd.

  • Globalization Strategies : Strategic Adaptations and Pathways Ahead for Swedish Multinational Corporations
  • 2021
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This report sets out to explore possible adaptations in the strategies of Swedish multinational corporations (MNCs) following changes in economic globalization. Specifically, it investigates the possible shifts and future directions of strategies to the global drivers of technology, politics, and sustainability, and how these drivers may impact the future competitiveness of Swedish firms. Using data from 20 in-depth interviews with CEOs, CFOs, and other executive decision-makers, representing 19 Swedish MNCs, the results suggest this is a major question for both concern and opportunity with regards to the future competitiveness of these firms. Specifically, the report highlights the following main conclusions:A strong global corporate identity coupled with a Swedish moral compass: Swedish MNCs view themselvesas global but with strong local embeddedness. Yet, interestingly, a moral compass with a Swedish flavor suggests a ‘Swedish way’ of conducting business, even in far-away locations.Parallelism in changing value chains: The political risks of being a global firm are evident. The firms areacutely aware of risks associated with disruptions in their value chains, and some firms have responded byconsidering their value chain configurations or are even developing several sets of value chains. This parallelism is deemed to facilitate de-coupling of regions and lower the risks stemming from external shocks.Reshoring to Sweden is not an option: Surprisingly few firms seem to consider reshoring value chain activitiesto Sweden to be an attractive option. This is despite movement in the locational footprint where the firms are abandoning or considering pulling out of markets due to unfavorable conditions relating to political andsustainability issues. The big bet on sustainability: Many firms are positioning their businesses based upon a vision of providing sustainable products and services. The big bet on sustainability offers many opportunities and could propel Swedish MNCs to a strong position on the global market for sustainable products, rendering a price premium. To conclude, the last 18 months have made firms well aware of the strengths and the weaknesses in their strategic orientation. Firm resilience appears as generally high with few firms reporting that the pandemic itself will have significant long-term effects on MNC strategies. Moving forward, Swedish MNCs seem equipped to combine a business strategy of new technology with sustainable solutions. The activity strategy shows indications of becoming increasingly regional, which could prove to be supportive of the often-decentralized strategies adopted by the Swedish MNCs.

  • Management control for sustainability : Activities and procedures for energy management in industrial companies
  • 2020
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The thesis takes its point of departure in the important role of the industrial sector in mitigating climate change through a reduced energy use. There is a lack of understanding for how energy management should be organised and implemented in industrial companies. The aim of this thesis is therefore to analyse the management control activities and procedures used by energyintensive industrial companies for energy management and one of its key elements—energy efficiency investments. The thesis also examines how so-called non-energy benefits are considered for energy efficiency investments and their role in driving these investments. The thesis consists of a cover essay and four appended papers, one of which is based on a systematic literature review of benefit concepts applied in the context of energy efficiency investments. The remaining papers build on three empirical studies in Swedish manufacturing and process industries with a particular focus on the pulp and paper industry.Energy management is an important aspect of sustainability for the industrial sector. This thesis advances the understanding of management control for energy management by bridging the theoretical domains of energy management and sustainability management control. The thesis acknowledges both the strategic and operational dimensions of energy management, going beyond the predominating operational perspective, and illuminates the way in which both dimensions are reflected in management control practices. The role of established organisational arrangements spanning different functions and levels is identified. A framework for categorising non-energy benefits is also developed, which may facilitate their inclusion in the investment process. However, the configuration of management control activities and procedures applied for the investment process is essential for the extent to which non-energy benefits can be acknowledged during investment decision-making. Through its emphasis on management control activities and procedures for energy management, this thesis contributes to the managerial path of sustainability management control, providing both theoretical and managerial contributions. Altogether, the four studies constituting this thesis illuminate the need for adequate tools and methods in the transition to a sustainable industrial sector and the role of management control configurations in this endeavour.

  • A palace fit for the future : Desirability in temporal work
  • 2022
  • In: Strategic Organization. - : Sage Publications. - 1476-1270 .- 1741-315X. ; 20:1, s. 20-50
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Research on the strategic organization of time often assumes that collective efforts are motivated by andoriented toward achieving desirable, although not necessarily well-defined, future states. In situationssurrounded by uncertainty where work has to proceed urgently to avoid an impending disaster, however, temporal work is guided by engaging with both desirable and undesirable future outcomes. Drawing ona real-time, in-depth study of the inception of the Restoration and Renewal program of the Palace ofWestminster, we investigate how organizational actors develop a strategy for an uncertain and highlycontested future while safeguarding ongoing operations in the present and preserving the heritage of thepast. Anticipation of undesirable future events played a crucial role in mobilizing collective efforts to moveforward. We develop a model of future desirability in temporal work to identify how actors construct, link, and navigate interpretations of desirable and undesirable futures in their attempts to create a viable path ofaction. By conceptualizing temporal work based on the phenomenological quality of the future, we advanceunderstanding of the strategic organization of time in pluralistic contexts characterized by uncertainty and urgency.

  • Tensions in Transdisciplinary Research : A study of a climate research group
  • 2023
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In a time of sustainability predicaments and ‘grand challenges’, transdisciplinarity has been put forward as an approach through which researchers can engage with societal transformation for a better world. This study examines tensions that arise in the on-the-ground efforts of researchers to establish and manage a transdisciplinary research group within a Norwegian university. Tensions have been of interest in both studies of science and studies of organizations. Scholars have inquired into the ways in which tensions between interrelated, divergent demands influence the work of scientific knowledge production and organizational life. Transdisciplinary research groups, centers and institutes are proliferating, yet studies of the tensions and challenges they face at the micro-level remain nascent. Drawing on intermittent fieldwork over a two-year period, this dissertation analyses a local case in which climate and energy researchers took a transdisciplinary approach in establishing a “societally engaged” research group and research center in a social sciences department. Key questions are: which tensions do they encounter? How do they respond to them? The study makes use of concepts on tensions and paradox developed in organization and management studies to inform discussions on challenges in inter- and trans-disciplinary research in practice. The case study identifies, illustrates, and analyses several tensions salient for researchers: between the need for both consolidation and interrelation; between the need to grow and formalise the group while also maintaining its closeness and values; between ideas of researchers’ relationship to societal change as both distant and engaged; and between the need to maintain academic autonomy while providing usefulness to non-academic actors. Various responses to these tensions are identified and explored, including defending against, and actively embracing them. The findings allow for rethinking transdiscipclinary research in practice, with implications for research managers, practitioners, and policy makers.
