    • The Swedish Strategic Innovation Agenda for Geoenergy develops a strategy for highlighting the need for geoenergy research, development and innovation in relation to the business community and authorities. Sweden has a strong global position in the field. Geothermal energy is the third­largest renewable energy source in Sweden, along with wind power. Currently, approximately 18 TWh of renewable heat per year is supplied to household, industrial and commercial buildings. In addition, there is 1­2 TWh of cooling. There is a great need for a long­term strategy and financial plan for geoenergy research and innovation in Sweden, in order to maintain and further develop research groups and the country's leading position in the field. Today, Swedish research in this field comprises about 14 full­time positions at universities, institutes and companies. This is little compared to the existing use of geothermal energy, about 19 TWh, which is worth about 15 billion SEK in consumer sales. It is also little in relation to possible future contributions to sustainable development in Sweden and abroad. The agenda is divided into short independent chapters that are tailored to different target groups/ applications. Each chapter consists of an introduction to the current situation, how geoenergy can strategically contribute to a sustainable society, and what actions/needs are a priority.

    • The term semi-professional can be used to denote occupational groups that do not have emergency response as their primary profession but who get additional responsibilities within rescue and response, e.g. by performing a first response or assisting the professional emergency services. In this study, four different groups of possible semi-professional resources are analyzed and compared. Similarities and differences between the four groups are discussed. Factors, important for the successful implementation of a cross-sector collaboration of this kind, are highlighted. The preliminary results show that all four groups have the potential to act as semi-professional resources within emergency response. Interestingly, the basic requirements are the same for all groups, despite different prerequisites.

    • Enligt de dokumentatörer som deltog i samtalen hade de allra flesta egna erfarenheter av hemtentor. En hemtentamen definierades som att studenten utförde sin examination i hemmet med tillgång till olika typer av källmateri-al, som kurs- och annan litteratur samt med hjälp av tidskrifter och journaler via internet. Ett vanligt förhållande tycktes vara att en tentamen var begrän-sad till 1-2 veckor, vilket skiljde sig från lärarprogrammets terminsvisa tentor. I de allra flesta fall offentliggjordes hemtentan ett visst klockslag via nätet, ofta med hjälp av lärplattformar som It’s Learning. Oavsett den tid som stu-denterna hade till förfogande betonades vikten av att sätta tydliga tidsramar och att man som lärare följde efterlevnaden av dessa ramar.

    • Phobic postural vertigo is characterized by subjective imbalance and dizziness while standing or walking, despite normal values for clinical balance tests. Patients with phobic postural vertigo exhibit an increased high-frequency sway in posturographic tests. Their postural sway, however, becomes similar to the sway of healthy subjects during difficult balance tasks. Posturographic recordings of 30 s of quiet stance was compared to recordings of 30 s of quiet stance during a postural threat, which consisted of the knowledge of forthcoming vibratory calf muscle stimulation, in 37 consecutive patients with phobic postural vertigo and 24 healthy subjects. During quiet stance without the threat of forthcoming vibratory stimulation, patients with phobic postural vertigo exhibited a postural sway containing significantly more high-frequency sway than the healthy subjects. During the quiet stance with forthcoming vibratory stimulation, i.e., anticipation of a postural threat, the significant differences between groups disappeared for all variables except sagittal high-frequency sway. During postural threat, healthy subjects seemed to adopt a postural strategy that was similar to that exhibited by phobic postural vertigo patients. The lack of additional effects facing a postural threat among phobic postural vertigo patients may be due to an already maximized postural adaptation. Deviant postural reactions among patients with phobic postural vertigo may be considered as an avoidant postural response due to a constant fear of losing postural control.

  • Monitoring of a borehole thermal energy storage in Sweden

    • This paper presents the description of the first stage of a project consisting on the monitoring of a newly installed borehole thermal energy storage (BTES) system that started to operate during the autumn of 2015. The BTES system is designed for approximately 4 GWh per year of heat injection and 3 GWh per year of heat extraction and will provide heating and cooling to a set of institutional facilities at Stockholm University, Sweden. The energy storage system consists of a set of 130 borehole heat exchangers, 230 meters deep. Strategic locations within the bore field have been selected to carry out the measurements. The monitoring system comprises temperature and energy flow meters. The temperature measurements are performed using a distributed temperature sensing set-up which allows to measure temperature along the depth of the boreholes, providing a large amount of data for the characterization of the thermal processes in the ground. During the upcoming years, the measured data will be utilized to evaluate and optimize the actual operational condition of the system, and to test the validity of assumptions made during the design phase. Moreover, the measured data will be utilized for validation of current bore field design methods and to have a better understanding of the thermal interaction between neighboring boreholes.

    • The Swedish Regional Climate Modelling Programme, SWECLIM, was a 6.5-year national research network for regional climate modeling, regional climate change projections and hydrological impact assessment and information to a wide range of stakeholders. Most of the program activities focussed on the regional climate system of Northern Europe. This led to the establishment of an advanced, coupled atmosphere-ocean-hydrology regional climate model system, a suite of regional climate change projections and progress on relevant data and process studies. These were, in turn, used for information and educational purposes, as a starting point for impact analyses on different societal sectors and provided contributions also to international climate research.

  • Decreased postural adaptation in patients with phobic postural vertigo-An effect of an "anxious" control of posture?

    • Postural adaptability and responses elicited by vibratory stimulation to the calf muscles recorded on a force platform with eyes open or closed were analyzed in 39 patients suffering from Postural Phobic Vertigo (PPV) (17 men and 22 women, mean age 49 years) and 24 healthy subjects (14 men, 10 women, mean age 38 years). The vibration induced increased body sway in both groups, but the adaptation pattern differed significantly. With eyes open the PPV patients decreased their induced body sway over time (-32%, p < 0.01), which the controls did not. With eyes closed the PPV patients reduced their induced body sway over time to a much lesser extent than the controls (PPV: -28%, p < 0.05, controls: -57%, p < 0.001). These new findings show that PPV patients adapt to proprioceptive perturbation to a lesser extent than normal subjects and that PPV patients do not use visual information as efficiently to modulate postural control. The results support the hypothesis that a cognitive set of posture, an "anxious control", may underlie the symptoms of PPV, i.e. an increased readiness to react to any perturbation or deviation.
