  • Forms of Representation in the Aristotelian Tradition : Volume Two: Dreaming
  • 2022
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The trilogy Forms of Representation in the Aristotelian Tradition investigates how Aristotle and his ancient and medieval successors understood the relation between the external world and the human mind. It gives an equal footing to the three most influential linguistic traditions – Greek, Latin, and Arabic – and offers insightful interpretations of historical theories of perception, dreaming, and thinking. This second volume focuses on dreaming and analyses some of the most prominent problems connected to dreams as representations. The contributions in this volume address the core Aristotelian texts and their reception, up to and including contemporary scientific discourse on dreaming.

  • Forms of Representation in the Aristotelian Tradition : Volume Three: Concept Formation
This final volume focuses on intellectual operations and analyses some of the most exciting issues pertaining to the conceptual representation of the external world. The contributions cover the historical traditions and their impact on contemporary philosophy of mind.

  • Perceptual Errors in Late Medieval Philosophy
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: The Senses and the History of Philosophy / edited by Brian Glenney and José Filipe Silva.. - New York : Routledge. - 9781138738997 ; , s. 106-130
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Perception of the external world is an essential part of the animal (including human) life, both as a source of knowledge and as a way to survive. Medieval authors accepted this view, and despite general concerns about the reliability of the senses in the acquisition of certain and objective knowledge, they thought that for the most part our perceptual system gets things right when it comes to the perceptual features of things—but not always. Our article focuses on thirteenth- and fourteenth-century philosophical discussions of illusions and other types of perceptual errors. Reception of incorrect information, misjudgments concerning perceptual objects, the binding problem, and similar cases that explain perceptual errors will be analyzed. We discuss what might be called medieval Aristotelian/Avicennian theories of perception and the internal senses (drawing mainly from Albertus Magnus and Thomas Aquinas), as well as the so-called perspectivist accounts of perception, especially that by Alhacen. Finally, we take up a debate between Peter Auriol and his critics, which contains elements that can be seen as precursors of later skeptical worries. The concern here is that, just like in contemporary discussions leading to disjunctivism, the absence of a secure way to distinguish between veridical and non-veridical perception leads to a general worry about the reliability of our experience of the world.

  • The Active Nature of the Soul in Sense Perception: Robert Kilwardby and Peter Olivi
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Vivarium. - 0042-7543 .- 1568-5349. ; 48, s. 245-278
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses the theories of perception of Robert Kilwardby and Peter of John Olivi. Our aim is to show how in challenging certain assumptions of medieval Aristotelian theories of perception they drew on Augustine and argued for the active nature of the soul in sense perception. For both Kilwardby and Olivi, the soul is not passive with respect to perceived objects; rather, it causes its own cognitive acts with respect to external objects and thus allows the subject to perceive them. We also show that Kilwardby and Olivi differ substantially regarding where the activity of the soul is directed to and the role of the sensible species in the process, and we demonstrate that there are similarities between their ideas of intentionality and the attention of the soul towards the corporeal world. © 2010 Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden.

  • Cognitive Dispositions in the Psychology of Peter John Olivi
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The Ontology, Psychology and Axiology of Habits (Habitus) in Medieval Philosophy, ed. N. Faucher & M. Roques. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783030002343 ; , s. 185-204
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter discusses Peter John Olivi’s (1248–1298) conception of the role of dispositions (habitus) in sensory cognition from metaphysical and psychological perspectives. It shows that Olivi makes a distinction between two general types of disposition. Some of them account for the ease, or difficulty, with which different persons use their cognitive powers, while others explain why people react differently to things that they perceive or think. This distinction is then applied to Olivi’s analysis of three different psychological operations, where the notion of disposition figures prominently; estimative perception, perceptual clarity, and the perception of pain and pleasure. The chapter argues that Olivi uses cognitive dispositions in an interesting way to explain individual differences between persons, and that they reveal the dynamic nature of his conception of human psychology.

  • Estimative Power as a Social Sense
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: The Internal Senses in the Aristotelian Tradition. Studies in the History of Philosophy of Mind, vol 22. Mousavian S., Fink J. (eds). - Cham : Springer. - 1573-5834. - 9783030334079 ; , s. 115-136
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The estimative power has been widely discussed in modern scholarly literature. This chapter complements the existing picture by analysing medieval Latin views concerning its role as the explanans of the social behaviour of humans and other animals. Although medieval authors rarely focus on this function, the chapter shows that the estimative power plays an important explanatory role both in philosophical psychology and political philosophy. © 2020, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
