  • A holistic view of value generation process in a SSBI environment : A service dominant logic perspective
  • 2018
  • In: Journal of Decision Systems. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1246-0125 .- 2116-7052. ; 27:S1, s. 46-55
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Self-service business intelligence (SSBI) is an emerging trend in organisations allowing users to become more autonomous in data exploration. Organisations are keen to provide such services for their employees due to its potential benefits. However, there is little empirical knowledge about the process of building a SSBI service and the role of users in this process. From an exploratory single case study of a major Norwegian online marketplace and drawing on service-dominant logic as an analytical framework, we identify and explore two major phases of building a SSBI service: co-production and co-creation. Besides providing a rich description of these phases, this study also explores the way stakeholders are involved and embedded throughout the process of value generation.

  • From an information consumer to an information author : a new approach to business intelligence
  • 2018
  • In: Journal of Organizational Computing and Electronic Commerce. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1091-9392 .- 1532-7744. ; 28:2, s. 157-171
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Self-Service Business Intelligence (SSBI) enables business users, such as executives, managers, analysts, and knowledge workers to build reports on a need-basis to support their decisions and actions toward business success. This suggests that business users are empowered not only to consume information but also to author it. Yet, research on SSBI is mainly concentrated at the industrial level, and furthermore little is known on the way SSBI is changing the current state of BI. To address this lack of knowledge, this study explores the attributes of SSBI that are necessary to extend the role of a business user beyond that of an information consumer by drawing on the literature of Self-Service Technologies (SST). This study provides a new definition of SSBI as a new approach to BI. Furthermore, it highlights the duality of high levels of co-production and low levels of dependency as key to the SSBI approach.

  • From an Information Consumer to an Information Author : the Role of Self-Service Business Intelligence
  • 2017
  • In: AMCIS 2017 Proceedings. - 9780996683142
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Self-service business intelligence (SSBI) enables executives, managers, analysts and knowledge workers to access data and build reports based on their needs to support decisions and actions toward business success. This suggests that business users not only consume information but that they are also able to author information. This discourse remains concentrated at an industrial level, and there is a lack of academic research on the self-service capability of BI. To this end, we draw on a literature review on self-service technologies (SST) to explore the characteristics needed for SSBI to extend the role of a business user beyond being an information consumer. This study highlights ease of use, trust, independence and control as the main characteristics that are needed to generate outcomes in terms of co-production, self-efficacy and time efficiency at an individual level.

  • Modes of engagement in SSBA : A service dominant logic perspective
  • 2019
  • In: AMCIS 2019 Proceedings. - 9780996683180
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The main premise of self-service business analytics (SSBA) is to make business users autonomous during data analytics. Driven by this potential, organizations are spending resources to design SSBA environmet to empower business employees and decentralize the analytics capabilities. Yet, little is known about how SSBA is facilitating business employees’ independence, and moreover, the value that is co-created. Based on empirical data from a major Norwegian online marketplace and drawing on service-dominant logic as an analytical framework, we identify three main modes of data engagement in SSBA: no dependency, high dependency, and low dependency. Furthermore, we identify the required business users’ resources in the analytical processes in each mode. We discuss the organizational implications of these findings.

  • Patterns of resource integration in the self-service approach to business analytics
  • 2020
  • In: Proceedings of the 53rd Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, HICSS 2020. - 1530-1605. - 9780998133133 ; 2020-January, s. 5359-5368
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The main premise of Self-Service Business Analytics (SSBA) is to make business employees autonomous during the data analytical process. To empower business employees, organizations are decentralizing their analytical capabilities through an SSBA approach. Yet, little is known about how employees integrate resources, such as, among others, personal competencies, environment resources including technology, and to generate insights in SSBA. Based on the empirical data of a major Norwegian online marketplace and drawing on service-dominant logic as an analytical framework, we identify and explain two types of resource integration in an SSBA environment: direct and clustered resource integration (including 1st tier and 2nd tier) enabled and controlled by three types of institutions. We finally discuss some organizational implications and the meaning of each sub-type of clustered resource integration.

  • BI Views: Connection, Immersion, and Fusion Through the Lens of Emergence
  • 2012
  • In: Fusing decision support systems into the fabric of the context. - 9781614990727 ; , s. 125-136
  • Book chapter (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract
    • In the debate on the core of Information System (IS), El Sawy identified three faces of IS views: connection, immersion, and fusion. However, no research has further elaborated these concepts. For this task, we adopted the characteristics of the old concept of “emergence” to better describe and explain the shifts in IS from connection to immersion and finally towards fusion. A police organization is examined as a case study, and its Business Intelligence (BI) system and users and their interaction in solving daily tasks are observed. The study took place during two different time periods in 2009 and 2011. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used, including a survey and interviews. Two main user groups were identified in the police organization: viewers and analysts. The results of this study showed that in the context of viewers BI is in connection view and is slowly emerging into immersion. On the other hand, in the context of analysts BI is positioned in immersion view and, based on emergent properties, we concluded that there is potential for a slow emergence towards fusion once more capabilities are integrated in the BI system used by the analysts.

  • Inside the mind of an IT champion
  • 2016
  • In: Journal of Decision Systems. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2116-7052 .- 1246-0125. ; 25:S1, s. 500-511
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • IT champions have considerable influence on the adoption of a new technology in organisations. A champion engages in a new technology and uses influential tactics to sell and implement it in the organisation. While the importance of IT champions is well documented, very little is understood about how a champion makes sense of a new technology and what sources of beliefs influence the technology commitment of an IT champion. Using an organisation vision lensat the individual level of analysis, this study investigates individuals who championed the adoption of mobile business intelligence (mBI) in their organisations. Our qualitative analysis suggests that the m- BI organising vision influences IT champions through their m-BI perception and organisational needs perception as they engage in the process of identifying and making sense of the potential of m-BI. Furthermore, an IT champion actively participates and contributes in the organising vision discourse.

  • IS Evaluation in the Fusion View : An Emergence Perspective
  • 2012
  • In: [Host publication title missing]. ; , s. 41-46
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Different theories have changed the way we address to technol-ogy. In the debate on the core of Information System (IS), El Sawy identi-fied three faces of IS views: connection, immersion, and fusion. El Sawy contends that it may be time for a natural shift of emphasis from the con-nection view to the immersion view to the fusion view as IT continues to morph and augment its capabilities. In the fusion view, IT and IS are fused within the business environment, such that business and IT and IS are in-distinguishable to standard time-space perception and form a unified fab-ric. There exist different traditional IS evaluation approaches, like experi-mental, pragmatic, constructivist, pluralist and realist IS evaluation re-search. These approaches evaluate IS when it is positioned either in the connection or immersion view. However, we believe that the fusion view will influence the way IS is evaluated. This paper uses the relational emer-gence theory, based on the philosophy of critical realism where emergence refers to an entity as a ‘whole’ whose parts are structured by the relations among each other. Emergent entities possess properties different from its individual parts’ properties. Considering the similarity to fusion concept, the emergence concept is used to theorize and operationalize the fusion view, as it lacks a theoretical grounding. Based on this, we present and discuss the implications for IS evaluation in terms of how to evaluate a process as well as the output of the process. The discussion on IS evalua-tion is illustrated through an empirical example, drawn on a research study within a police organization. This paper concludes that in the fusion view, the evaluation process shall embrace a holistic perspective. The focus of the evaluation process shall be the emergent entity which consist of IS,users, task and processes structured by means of relationships among each other. The properties exhibited by this emergent entity shall be evaluated.
