  • Insights in α-Al2O3 degradation in multilayer CVD coated carbide tools when turning IN718
  • 2023
  • In: Wear. - : Elsevier BV. - 0043-1648. ; 523
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The degradation behaviour of textured CVD α-alumina has received significant attention within academic literature with regard to steel turning. In contrast, the research performed on Ni-based superalloys is yet to be brought up to the same level of understanding. Hence, the objective of this report will be to offer insights with regard to the degradation mechanisms of the textured alumina layer of CVD Ti(C,N)/α- Al2O3 coated carbides when turning a Ni-based superalloy, and to explore the role of different wear mechanisms that contribute to cutting tool failure. Adhesive wear was observed to be the primary wear mechanism responsible for coating failure, which can result in sudden mechanically driven grain pull-out and delamination events. Grain-pull out was observed across the entire contact zone; delamination was observed to occur most frequently around the trailing edge and depth-of-cut notches, and towards the end of the contact zone as the chip separates from the tool. Evidence of characteristic plastic deformation induced ridges in the alumina coating surface were also revealed within the sliding zone, leading to gradual wear of the alumina layer. These findings demonstrate that there are both similarities and differences in alumina degradation behaviour when compared to previous studies conducted on steel turning.

  • Linking learning outcomes and game mechanics in the early stages of the RU EU? project
  • 2019
  • In: 7th International Conference on Games and Learning Alliance, GALA 2018. - Cham : Springer Verlag. ; , s. 191-200
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The issue of national and European identity is driving many of the issues that are currently of concern to European citizens. The Erasmus+ funded RU EU? project aims to develop an innovative online game, the RU EU? game, that will help students across Europe to develop a better understanding of their own National and European identity and values, as well as those of others, and to challenge them about their attitudes and prejudices by tackling problem solving dilemmas relating to identity. It is hoped that the game will provide an engaging platform for young Europeans to confront some of the complex and confusing issues surrounding National and European identity at a time of change and increasing tension across Europe. This paper describes the early stages of the game design and focuses on characterizing the learning outcomes and game mechanics for the RU EU? game and bringing these together.

  • The Human Brain Distinguishes between Single Odorants and Binary Mixtures
  • 2009
  • In: Cerebral Cortex. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1047-3211 .- 1460-2199. ; 19:1, s. 66-71
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Single odors are processed differently from odor mixtures in the cortex of rodents. We investigated whether single and binary odor mixtures activate different regions also in the human brain. We analyzed data from positron emission tomography scans using pyridine, citral, and 5 mixtures of pyridine and citral in proportions varying from 10/90 to 90/10, with 50/50 being the most impure. Comparing mixtures with single odorants gave activation in the left cingulate and right parietal and superior frontal cortices and bilateral activation in the anterior and lateral orbitofrontal cortices. We also found that brain activity in the lateral orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) increased with odorant impurity, whereas the anterior OFC was activated for binary odor mixtures and deactivated for single components. We conclude that binary odor mixtures and their individual components are processed differently by the human brain. The lateral portion of the OFC responds to mixture impurity in a graded fashion, whereas the anterior portion acts like an on-off detector of odor mixtures.

  • Conference • NNHSH 2013 Theme: Transformations of Health Practices and Health Policies in the Nordic Welfare States
  • 2013
  • Editorial proceedings (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • With the theme of the research conference of the NNHSH network we want researchers, both at doctoral and post-doctoral level, to reflect on how health practices and health policies in the Nordic Welfare States are being transformed and have been transformed in the past. The Nordic countries are all, more or less, in the midst of a transformation from a social democratic health care system, based on universal access for all citizens with no regard to their position, class or previous health practices, to a more neoliberal oriented health care regime with new - or perhaps in some ways very old - ideas about the body, health, and health care responsibilities. Sociologist S.N. Eisenstadt (1956) once suggested that the idea of "citizenship" in the development of a societal structure like the Western states of today served to establish a historically new position for individuals in preference to kinship and family status. Within different forms of government, such responsibilities are balanced differently between individual, family and state. For more than a century responsibility for health and healthiness in the Nordic countries has to a great extent been incumbent on the state. At the same time transformations of political ideologies have led to more pressure on individual - and familial - responsibilities. The conference aims at encouraging scholarly discussions highlighting the transformations of health politics in the Nordic countries and the consequences as observed and experienced by people in this context. Topics discussed can revolve around the role of governments in the furthering of transformations - be it regarding patient education, expectations of empowerment of the elderly in elderly care, or negotiations about the right to biological parenthood. It can also be about peoples´ embodied, verbalized and negotiated responses to the changes taking place. Furthermore, any health situation does not only concern patients or other people in need of care or help, but it also includes family-members as care providers, who may be drawn in to this role due to increasing expectations of kinship obligations and responsibilities.

  • Design of a Variable Phase-Pole Induction Machine for Electric Vehicle Applications
  • 2022
  • In: 2022 International Conference on Electrical Machines, ICEM 2022. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). ; , s. 976-982
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The electrification of the transport sector requires significant research in electrical machines and drives to fulfil the application constraints. High torque demands at low speed and high-speed requirements at relatively low torque are posing challenges for the design of efficient machines with a compact and sustainable design. The ability to reach very high speeds makes a variable phase-pole machine attractive for electric traction. Moreover, their dimensions compared to conventional machines has not been sufficiently investigated. This work describes the design and control of a variable phase-pole induction machine with distributed windings for electric vehicle applications. The induction machine is designed to work in two switchable configurations: three-phase/six-pole, and nine-phase/two-pole. The control model is developed based on Harmonic Plane Decomposition. The proposed machine is compared to a conventional induction machine with non-switchable phase-pole configuration, showing a reduction in size for the same coverage of the torque-speed map.

  • Pain assessment in ventilated and non-ventilated neonates in NICUs across the UK : European Pain Audit in Neonates (Europain)
  • 2014
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background: Neonates undergo many painful procedures during their neonatal intensive care stay. These may include tracheal intubation/ventilation, skin-breaking procedures, drainage/suctioning of body orifices or cavities. Inherent subjectivity and difficulties associated with neonatal pain assessment contribute to a wide variety of assessment tools and clinical practices. To date, these practices have been not studied on a large scale. Objective: To determine current clinical practices for neonatal pain assessment in neonatal units across the United Kingdom (UK).Design/Methods: As part of a European epidemiological observational study on bedside pain assessment practices data were collected for all neonates in participating NICUs until infants left the unit (discharge, death, transfer to another hospital) or for 28 days. Data collection occurred via an online database for 1 month at each NICU. All neonates up to a gestational age of 44 weeks were included. Results: Between February 2013 to May 2013, 66 UK NICUs collected data on 2691 neonates. Of these, 713 received tracheal ventilation and 1978 had spontaneous breathing or non-invasive ventilation. The median (IQR) gestational age of ventilated neonates [32.1 (27.9-38.6)] was less than non-ventilated neonates [37.0 (34.1-39.7), p < 0.001]. Overall, 56.9% of ventilated neonates and 32.5% of non-ventilated neonates received bedside pain assessments (p < 0.001), with use of pain assessments ranging from 0-100% between units.CONCLUSIONS: Over half (56.9%) of ventilated neonates and about one third (32.5%) of non-ventilated neonates had pain assessments performed in UK neonatal units. Wide variations in the methods used and rates of pain assessment exist among centres.

  • 25 år som förändrade skolan: : Grundskolans införande 1947-1972 ur ett kommunalt perspektiv
  • 2016
  • In: Vägval i skolans historia. - Stockholm : Föreningen för undervisningshistoria. ; 2
  • Journal article (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract
