  • Urban green commons for socially sustainable cities and communities
  • 2022
  • In: Nordic Social Work Research. - : Taylor & Francis. - 2156-857X .- 2156-8588. ; 12:2, s. 310-322
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In these times of global pandemics and climate crisis, social sustainability has become a crucial issue within diverse sectors and disciplines. This article aims to broaden the discussions on social sustainability in general, and in relation to community work within professional social work in particular.By means of a cross-disciplinary bricolage approach – with a focus on the commons – we aim to construct a holistic view of urban social sustainability. Beginning with the Anthropocene concept, which recognizes the human impact on the Earth’s natural systems and hence highlights the need to include the natural environment as a determinant of good and fair living conditions for all, we remix arguments and examples relating to social sustainability with environmental and spatial dimensions to develop an urban green commons. Our cross-disciplinary perspective extends beyond contemporary social policy by bringing together natural resource management, public health, and spiritual aspects of the commons. In order to fit the plurality of urban contexts across the planet, further critical deliberations are needed, focusing on social sustainability and collective action for sustainable change in each context.

  • Youth Empowerment for Sustainable Development: Exploring Ecosocial Work Discourses
  • 2022
  • In: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 14:6
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Youth empowerment within the context of sustainable development (SD) is starting to gain more attention within social work, both internationally and in Sweden. SD, as an integrated set of global goals in tackling social, economic, and ecological challenges, is a vital concept in social work. Protecting people and the natural environment can be considered the fullest realization of the person-in-environment, a foundation upon which the social work profession is built. The ecosocial perspective is widely discussed in terms of societal transformation in harmony with nature. Within this context, this article explores ecosocial work discourses in youth empowerment. Data were gathered through 20 qualitative semi-structured interviews with key representatives of youth organizations from Gävle municipality, Sweden, and analyzed using ATLAS.ti v.9.0. The main findings are discussed within the framework of ecosocial work, youth empowerment, and a Foucauldian perspective on discourse, power, and knowledge. The results indicate the need for an ecosocial youth empowerment, calling for increased knowledge of both youth empowerment through SD and ecosocial work for those working with/for youth connected to social work practice. The results highlight the importance of an ecosocial youth empowerment on a more structural and collective level.

  • IL23R in the Swedish, Finnish, Hungarian and Italian populations : association with IBD and psoriasis, and linkage to celiac disease
  • 2009
  • In: BMC Medical Genetics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1471-2350. ; 10:8
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Association of the interleukin-23 receptor (IL23R) with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has been confirmed in several populations. IL23R also associates with psoriasis, suggesting that the gene may be an important candidate for many chronic inflammatory diseases.METHODS: We studied association of single-nucleotide variants in IL23R with IBD in Swedish patients, in both Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) subsets. The same genetic variants were also studied in Finnish patients with psoriasis or celiac disease, and in Hungarian and Italian patients with celiac disease.RESULTS: Association of IL23R with IBD was replicated in our Swedish patients, and linkage and association of the IL23R region with psoriasis was found in the Finnish population. The IL23R region was also linked to celiac disease in Finnish families, but no association of IL23R variants with celiac disease was found in the Finnish, Hungarian or Italian samples.CONCLUSION: Our study is the first to demonstrate association of IL23R with CD and UC in Swedish patients with IBD. It is also the first study to report linkage and association of the IL23R region with psoriasis in the Finnish population. Importantly, this is the first report of linkage of the IL23R region to celiac disease, a chronic inflammatory condition in which IL23R has not been previously implicated.

  • Community art with young people in a divided residential area in Sweden - the emergence of Art-PIMPA
  • 2018
  • In: Community Development Journal. - : Oxford University Press. - 0010-3802 .- 1468-2656. ; 53:3, s. 446-464
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Increasing sociospatial polarization, segregation and marginalization are challenging community workers to respond to complex social needs and problems across the world. This article focuses on examining sociospatial polarization and community art as a form of community work in Sweden through the case study of Konst-PIMPA (Art-PIMPA). The inquiry studies how Art-PIMPA emerged and developed, working together with young people in a sociospatially divided residential area in the city of Norrkoping. The study shows that community art deals with imagination, creativity and co-creation, in order to explore, express and visualize the invisible factors in social development and change. The focus of Art-PIMPA was on participation, human rights and the democratic right to self-expression, requiring a glocal cosmopolitan outlook, which includes both global and local aspects. This meant taking an ethical-political stance of recognizing our common humanity and rights as citizens of the world regardless of background or context. Additionally, the study is a reminder of the need to generate a structural analysis of both exogenous and endogenous forces that impact our 'glocal world', in which global and local forces interact daily.

  • Community Care inom äldreomsorg i Sverige: En fallstudie i en glesbygdskommun i Dalarna
  • 2008
  • In: Ageing, dignity and diversity; 19th Nordic Congress of Gerontology. - Oslo.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • Tredje åldern : Tersen - gemenskapsboende i tredje åldern
  • 2011
  • In: Tredje åldern. - Malmö : Gleerups. - 9789140673473
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • An eco-social approach to tackling social exclusion in European cities : a new comparative research project in progress
  • 2000
  • In: European Journal of Social Work. - : Oxford University Press. - 1369-1457 .- 1468-2664. ; 3:1, s. 43-52
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this article we would like to introduce a three-year Research Project called 'New Local Policies against Social Exclusion in European Cities', financed by the Targeted Socio-Economic Research Program (TSER) of the European Union. We will briefly highlight the entire research project that aims to make a contribution to European debate about social exclusion within social work (see also Washington and Paylor 1998), as well as social work's theoretical knowledge and field projects. The specific emphasis is on analysing the significance of the eco-social environment and citizen participation in disadvantaged residential areas, but related work aims to develop new kinds of action models and research methods. The project started in January 1998 in Finland, Germany, and Great Britain, and it will be completed by the end of 2000. Our research is a unique kind of cross-national comparative case-context research, based on classic ideas of action research and comparative research. Overall, the project aims through a European exchange to develop innovative models of local policies, particularly within community-based social work.
