  • Sculpture Market Efficiency and the Impact of Auction House Art Experts

    • In this study I examine the absolute and time-varying weak-form market efficiency of the international sculpture auction market. The results indicate that the sculpture market efficiency varies over time lending support to the Adaptive Markets Hypothesis. Moreover, I find that the times of peaking relative market inefficiency coincide with distress in the wider economy and financial markets. Additionally, I find evidence that auction house art experts' pre-sale estimate accuracy Granger causes developments in time-varying market efficiency, highlighting the importance of art experts.

    • This study finds that auction house art experts' relative estimate range positively affects realized prices. The effect is robust across the mid- low- and high-end segments of the international sculpture market. Interpreting the art experts' price estimate range as a proxy for the prevailing divergence of investor opinion in the art market, the findings are consistent with the disagreement model of Miller (1977). This evidence is contradictory to the predictions of the general auction model in Milgrom (1982) and does not lend support to the interpretation of the price estimate range as a proxy only for uncertainty. Moreover, the study gives insight into the price determinants of sculpture using a unique large dataset of over 65,000 sculpture sales at international auctions.

    • We study heat dissipation of a multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) device fabricated from two crossed nanotubes on a SiNx substrate under the influence of a constant (DC) electric bias. By monitoring the temperature of the substrate, we observe negligible Joule heating within the nanotube lattice itself and instead heating occurs in the insulating substrate directly via a remote-scattering heating effect. Using finite element analysis, we estimate a remote heating parameter, beta, as the ratio of the power dissipated directly in the substrate to the total power applied. The extracted parameters show two distinct bias ranges; a low bias regime where about 85% of the power is dissipated directly into the substrate and a high bias regime where beta decreases, indicating the onset of traditional Joule heating within the nanotube. Analysis shows that this reduction is consistent with enhanced scattering of charge carriers by optical phonons within the nanotube. The results provide insights into heat dissipation mechanisms of Joule heated nanotube devices that are more complex than a simple heat dissipation mechanism dominated by acoustic phonons, which opens new possibilities for engineering nanoelectronics with improved thermal management.

    • Background: Several studies have shown that autoimmune diseases are associated with psychiatric diseases like depression and psychosis. Genetic evidence supports this association. The aim of this study was to investigate if genetic variants predisposing to autoimmune diseases and psychiatric disorders are genetically linked, constructing the common haplotypes.Methods: All registered single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the Genome-wide association studies (“GWAS catalog”) having been associated with autoimmune rheumatic and endocrine diseases were investigated for being in linkage disequilibrium with any psychiatric disorders’ associated SNPs. Analysis was performed by the LDtrait and LDhap bioinformatics tools.Results: Multiple chromosomal regions have been detected containing rheumatic/endocrine diseases’ predisposing SNPs and psychiatric disorders’ predisposing SNPs. The genetic haplotypes have been constructed for some of these genetic regions. Six of the autoimmune rheumatic and endocrine diseases examined here share a common haplotype with psychiatric diseases at the HLA locus 6p21-22.Conclusion: Our study shows that autoimmune diseases and psychiatric diseases are genetically linked. Genetic haplotypes have been constructed, showing in detail this genetic linkage.
