  • Primary tuberculosis infection in 35 children at a Swedish day care center
  • 2008
  • In: The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal. - 0891-3668 .- 1532-0987. ; 27:12, s. 1078-82
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND AND METHOD: The decline of tuberculosis (TB) in the Swedish population since the middle of the 20th century resulted in decreased awareness of the disease. Increased migration from TB-endemic countries has resulted in new cases and risk of transmission. A day care provider was diagnosed with cavitary TB after being symptomatic for 5 months. We describe the contact tracing at the day care center, the clinical and radiographic findings, and treatment of the infected children. RESULTS: We stratified the children by contact with the source case and examined the most exposed first. Thirty-two of 53 attending and 3 of 84 visiting preschool children were infected. All of them had spent at least 3 days at the center. Symptoms were usually mild and nonspecific. Seventeen children had pulmonary radiographic changes compatible with primary TB, and one had miliary TB. The radiographic resolution was slow, with normalization in 50% after 12 months. Eighteen months after termination of treatment, there have been no relapses. The children with latent infection were treated with rifampin for 4 months and none has developed TB. CONCLUSIONS: The manifestations of primary TB in children today are similar to those described 50-70 years ago. The tuberculin skin test is an effective tool for contact tracing in an unvaccinated, previously nonexposed childhood population. Rapid detection of contagious patients and thorough contact investigation remain our most important means to reduce transmission.

  • The One Stop Shop to Open Access Journals - DOAJ
  • 2008
  • In: ScieCom Info. - 1652-3202. ; 4:4
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The initiative to start the project Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) was taken in 2002 at the first Nordic Conference on Scholarly Communication (NCSC). The idea was to develop a one stop shop service which made it easier for libraries and aggregators to integrate OA-journals data in their services, for OA-publishers to get their journals visible and for readers to find OA-material. Initially Open Society Institute and SPARC funded the project which was launched in 2003 containing around 300 journals.

  • Embedding with empathy
  • 2020
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Has it ever happened to you that a co-worker, or maybe even a line manager, reacted emotionally when you suggested changes, improvements or new services based on your UX research? Maybe they snapped at you, seemed angry, or just said something that seemed like a rather irrational response. If you are really unlucky, the person having the adverse reaction to your design or suggestions is someone who can also stop your plans from happening, or someone who is actually key to have on board for successful implementation. I would like to claim, based on my own experience as well as that of my workshop participants, that this kind of emotional reaction is not uncommon. It typically occurs at the design or implementation stage of a UX project and even though it can sometimes be mitigated by Andy Priestner’s go-to phrase: “it’s only a prototype,” it can also be prevented. My workshop at UXLibsV explored how we can use neuroscience and, more specifically, the SCARF model to better understand and empathise with our colleagues, and ourselves, for better UX embedding in our organisations.

  • From data to development : using qualitative data to create ideas and solutions
  • 2017
  • In: Conference proceedings of the Library Assessment Conference 2016.
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • During autumn 2015 we conducted a large qualitative user study on our library as a learning space. The purpose of the study was to find evidence regarding user needs, in order to be able to make well-informed decisions for a development project. The paper will discuss both the usefulness of qualitative methods in understandingstudents’ and researchers’ needs and requirements when using the library, and how you can work with the collected data as a base for development.

  • ‘From problem to prototype’ – using a service design course to bridge gaps within a university
  • 2024
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • For several years now the SLU University Library in Sweden has worked actively with user-centred research and design for the purpose of library development. One of the goals in our current strategy is that by 2025 the library ‘should become a hub for the university’s work with user-centred methods and will be characterised by an approach that centres the user perspective.’ To work towards this goal, the library has developed a service design course, aimed at all staff at the university. (Further below I will explain why we chose to call this endeavour a ‘service design course’ rather than a ‘UX course’.) The course has so far been offered and run during two semesters, in the spring and autumn of 2022, with 18 participants having completed the course. The aim was to raise awareness and the general skill level within the subject area, as well as bringing together colleagues from different parts of the university. Participants have come from the library, the communications department and student services, as well as administrative staff at the academic faculties.
