  • Prehistoric lifestyles on Gotland : Diachronic and Synchronic perspectives
  • 2011
  • In: Archaeologia Lituana. - Vilnius : Vilniaus universiteto leidykla. - 1392-6748. ; 12, s. 142-153
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Österholm (1989) suggested that it was the same population group who inhabit Gotland territory from the Mesolithic until the Bronze Age. She is of the opinion that the dramatic environmental changes were the decisive factor of the various lifestyle approaches and settlement patterns seen over time, a period of 7000 years. New research and diachronic and synchronic perspectives show that these patterns are not so simple and straight forward. Interactivity between changes in natural, social and cultural milieu are all driving forces at play in the lifestyle approaches, settlement patterns, social formations and external influences indicated on Gotland in prehistoric times.

  • The story of the only (?) megalith grave on Gotland Island
  • 2010
  • In: Documenta Praehistorica. - Lubljana : Univerza v Ljubljani. - 1408-967X. ; 37, s. 77-84
  • Journal article (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In this paper, we discuss the easternmost material expression of the Funnel Beaker Culture – a megalith grave on the west coast of Gotland Island in the Baltic Sea. The people who built and used the megalith brought the Neolithic lifestyle to Gotland. The biography of this monument includes two excavations, of which we participated in the latest in 1984. Our osteological analysis confirms that some thirty individuals of both sexes and various ages were buried there. The structure of the monument is that of a rectangular dolmen. This paper discusses the discovery of this specific site, and explores the existence of this type of monument in a Gotland context. Furthermore, is this really the only megalith on Gotland, or are more of these structures yet to be recognised? Finally, one may ask if the Neolithic way of life really was successful on Gotland.

  • Anakena Re-visited : New Perspectives on Old Problems at Anakena, Rapa Nui
  • 2022. - 1
  • In: The Prehistory of Rapa Nui (Easter Island). - Cham : Springer Nature. - 9783030911263 - 9783030911270 ; , s. 109-137
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • It is now over 30 years since we participated in the large-scale archaeological excavations at Anakena (Fig. 6.1). The results of the excavations are published in the Kon-Tiki Museum Occasional Papers (Skjølsvold 1994). The accumulated results from archaeological research on Rapa Nui subsequent to our initial excavations at Anakena justify a re-assessment of the remains and the chronological aspects at this site. New radiocarbon-dated samples have been added to the analysis and discussion of Rapa Nui prehistory, and old samples have been re-analyzed several times (see, for example, Martinsson-Wallin et al. 2013; Martinsson-Wallin and Crockford 2002; Wallin et al. 2010; Wilmshurst et al. 2011).In this respect, we suggest that it is important to re-analyze the activity and settlement sites and monuments at Anakena and their importance for ritual activities from the time of initial colonization onward. The aim of this paper is to provide new explanations and interpretations of the formation processes of the Anakena site with special attention to the activity area we named Nau Nau East (Fig. 6.2). Featuresobserved in this activity area included a small standing stone image upright that was crudely carved, hearths, refusal pits, postholes, grinding activities and a stone line demarcation.

  • Collective spaces and material expressions: ritual practice and island identities in Neolithic Gotland
  • 2016
  • In: Decoding neolithic atlantic & mediterranean island ritual. - Oxford & Philadelphia : Oxbow Books. - 9781785700507 - 9781785700521 ; , s. 1-15
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this chapter we explore the mid-Neolithic ritual evidence associated with the Pitted Ware Culture groupson the Island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. We discuss collective spaces and actions and question whether thegraves are the result of a sedentary-settlement concept. A nuanced approach is advocated, which brings tolight the complexity of the individual inhumations found at cemeteries as part of ritual actions tied to specificplace and collective space alike. These burials are apparently part of a collective ritualised expression, but alsoindividualised in terms of the personal expressions found in the grave goods, body position and treatment ofskeletal remains. We will use several case studies which will explore group identity and dynamics in an islandcontext as well as how certain expressions are seen in the individual grave-rituals.
