    • This contest involved the running and evaluation of computer vision and pattern recognition techniques on different data sets with known groundwidth. The contest included three areas; binary shape recognition, symbol recognition and image flow estimation. A package was made available for each area. Each package contained either real images with manual groundtruth or programs to generate data sets of ideal as well as noisy images with known groundtruth. They also contained programs to evaluate the results of an algorithm according to the given groundtruth. These evaluation criteria included the generation of confusion matrices, computation of the misdetection and false alarm rates and other performance measures suitable for the problems. The paper summarizes the data generation for each area and experimental results for a total of six participating algorithms

    • BACKGROUND: Acute viral necrosis virus (AVNV) is the causative agent of a serious disease resulting in high mortality in cultured Chinese scallops, Chlamys farreri. We have sequenced and analyzed the complete genome of AVNV. RESULTS: The AVNV genome is a linear, double-stranded DNA molecule of 210,993 bp with a nucleotide composition of 38.5% G + C. A total of 123 open reading frames were predicted to encode functional proteins, ranging from 41 to 1,878 amino acid residues. The DNA sequence of AVNV is 97% identical to that of ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1), and the amino acid sequences of the encoded proteins of these two viruses are 94-100% identical. The genomic organization of AVNV is similar to that of OsHV-1, and consists of two unique regions (170.4 kb and 3.4 kb, respectively), each flanked by two inverted repeats (7.6 kb and 10.2 kb, respectively), with a third unique region (1.5 kb) situated between the two internal repeats. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that AVNV is a variant of OsHV-1. The AVNV genome sequence provides information useful for understanding the evolution and divergence of OsHV-1 in marine molluscs.

    • In this work, the high-temperature thermal stability of nanocrystalline Cr2O3 films on Si wafers deposited at various bias voltages was systematically investigated by means of a symmetrical high-resolution thermogravimetric system. In the meantime, the effects of substrate bias voltage on the morphology, microstructure, crack area percentage, phase constituents, and grain size of the heat-treated Cr2O3 films were also studied in detail. The results showed that the Cr2O3 films presented the higher thermal stability in pure nitrogen than in air up to 1200 degrees C because the brittle oxidation product was more prone to cracking and chipping. As the bias voltage was -100 V, the Cr2O3 film showed the highest thermal stability which was attributed to its most compact structure and the lowest defect density. After the heat treatments, all the films cracked due to the big difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the Cr2O3 film and Si wafer, which caused large thermal stresses. And some obvious micro-cavities were left in the film cross section after oxidation owing to the vaporization of Cr2O3 in oxygen containing atmosphere. In addition, the heat treatment also had a strong influence on the grain size of the Cr2O3 films. Crown Copyright (C) 2013 Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
