  • Association of sdLDL-C With Incident Carotid Plaques With Stable and Vulnerable Morphology : A Prospective Cohort Study
  • 2024
  • In: Stroke. - 0039-2499 .- 1524-4628. ; 55:3, s. 576-585
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Small dense low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (sdLDL-C) particles are more atherogenic than large and intermediate low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) subfractions. We sought to investigate the association of sdLDL-C and the sdLDL-C/LDL-C ratio with incident carotid plaques with stable and vulnerable morphology in rural China.METHODS: This community-based cohort study used data from the RICAS study (Rose Asymptomatic Intracranial Artery Stenosis), which enrolled 887 participants (aged ≥40 years) who were living in Kongcun Town, Pingyin County, Shandong, and free of carotid plaques and had no history of clinical stroke or transient ischemic attack at baseline (2017). Incident carotid plaques and their vulnerability were detected by carotid ultrasound at follow-up (2021). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to explore the association of sdLDL-C or sdLDL-C/LDL-C ratio with incident carotid plaques while adjusting for demographic factors, vascular risk factors, and follow-up time.RESULTS: Of the 887 participants (mean age [SD], 53.89 [8.67%] years; 54.34% women), 179 (20.18%) were detected with incident carotid plaques during an average follow-up of 3.94 years (SD=0.14). Higher sdLDL-C or sdLDL-C/LDL-C ratio, but not LDL-C, was significantly associated with an increased risk of incident carotid plaques. The upper tertile of sdLDL-C (versus lower tertile) was associated with the multivariate-adjusted odds ratio of 2.48 (95% CI, 1.00–6.15; P=0.049; P for linear trend=0.046) for carotid plaques with vulnerable morphology (n=41), and the association remained significant in participants with normal LDL-C (<130 mg/dL; n=693; upper versus lower tertile: odds ratio, 3.38 [95% CI, 1.15–9.90]; P=0.027; P for linear trend=0.025). Moreover, the sdLDL-C/LDL-C ratio was associated with a higher odds ratio of incident carotid plaques in participants without diabetes (P for interaction=0.014).CONCLUSIONS: Higher sdLDL-C was associated with an increased risk of incident carotid plaques, especially carotid plaques with vulnerable morphology, even in participants with normal LDL-C. This suggests the potential of sdLDL-C as a therapeutic target for stroke prevention.

  • Solar cells sensitized by donor-linked concerted companion dyes
  • 2023
  • In: Journal of Materials Chemistry C. - : ROYAL SOC CHEMISTRY. - 2050-7526 .- 2050-7534. ; 11:16, s. 5450-5460
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Recently, concerted companion (CC) dyes have been developed by covalently linking the acceptors of organic and porphyrin dye units. Herein, a new class of CC dyes XW85 and XW86 have been designed by linking the donors of porphyrin and organic dye units with C6H12 and C12H24 chains, respectively. The DSSCs of XW85 based on the I-3(-)/I- electrolyte show significant J(SC) (17.20 mA cm(-2)) and PCE (8.96%), and XW86 exhibits higher J(SC) (18.55 mA cm(-2)) and PCE (9.76%), which are also higher than those of the corresponding cosensitization systems. However, the PCEs for XW85 and XW86 are lower than that of the acceptor-linked reference dye XW76 despite the obviously larger dye adsorption amounts. Desorption studies reveal that the CC dyes may be either double-anchored or single-anchored, with the double/single anchoring ratios lying in a sequence of XW85 (1.31) < XW86 (1.88) < XW76 (6.34), consistent with that of increasing PCE. These observations indicate that the non-adsorbed sub-dye unit cannot effectively contribute to electron injection, and thus relatively large mono-anchoring proportions for XW85 and XW86 result in their relatively low J(SC), and the difference between XW85 and XW86 indicates that a longer linking chain is beneficial for partially alleviating the unfavorable single anchoring, resulting in superior performance. The results indicate that the photovoltaic behavior for the CC dyes may be further enhanced by avoiding the unfavorable alignment of the two carboxyl groups in opposite directions and thus simultaneously anchoring the two carboxyl groups, which may be realized through more rational molecular design.

  • Association of Leukocyte Telomere Length with Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease : Role of Folate and Homocysteine
  • 2019
  • In: Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders. - : S. Karger AG. - 1420-8008 .- 1421-9824. ; 48:1-2, s. 56-67
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background: Leukocyte telomere length (LTL) is associated with the aging process and age-related degenerative diseases. The relation of peripheral blood LTL to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the role of folate and homocysteine (Hcy) in this relation remain unclear. Objectives: We aimed to investigate the association between LTL and the risks of MCI/AD, and to explore whether folate and Hcy may play a role in this association. Methods: This case-control study included 129 MCI subjects, 131 AD patients and 134 healthy controls. LTL was assessed using real-time polymerase chain reaction assay. Serum folate levels were tested by chemiluminescence enzyme immunoassay, and serum Hcy levels were measured using the enzymatic cycling method. Data were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression and multivariable linear regression with adjustment for potential confounders. Results: The mean LTL was 1.56 +/- 0.25 in controls, 1.44 +/- 0.23 in MCI, and 1.28 +/- 0.28 in AD patients (p< 0.01). In multivariate logistic regression, subjects in the longest LTL tertile had lower OR for MCI (OR 0.246; 95% CI 0.101-0.597) and AD (OR 0.123; 95% CI 0.044-0.345) in comparison to subjects in the shortest tertile. Shorter LTL was dose-dependently related to the ORs of MCI and AD. Further, serum folate concentration was positively associated with LTL (p < 0.01), while serum Hcy level was negatively associated with LTL (p < 0.05). In stratified analyses, LTL-MCI/AD association varied by serum folate and Hcy level. Conclusions: Shorter LTL is associated with the risks of MCI/AD. Folate and Hcy might play an important role in this association.

  • 2023
  • In: Lecture Notes in Electrical Engineering. - Singapore : Springer Nature Singapore. - 1876-1119 .- 1876-1100. ; 996 LNEE, s. 1121-1129
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Uplink Tx Switching is an important technology in multi-frequency cooperation, which can effectively improve the uplink capacity of the network by switching the uplink transmitting antenna of the terminal to realize the time-division uplink transmission of two carriers. The paper analyzes the technical principle and implementation of Uplink Tx Switching and compares the characteristics of SUL-based and UL CA-based schemes. Then it introduces an intelligent scheme to turn on Uplink Tx Switching when uplink capacity enhancement is required. The paper uses XGBoost Model to predict the uplink PRB utilization of the serving carriers when the uplink PRB utilization of the serving carrier is higher than the threshold, the target station turns on Uplink Tx Switching while the secondary carrier selection is also based on the uplink PRB utilization of the candidate carriers. Finally, the validity of XGBoost prediction is verified by the actual operation data in Hangzhou.

  • Antiaromatic Sapphyrin Isomer : Transformation into Contracted Porphyrinoids with Variable Aromaticity
  • 2023
  • In: Angewandte Chemie International Edition. - : Wiley-VCH Verlagsgesellschaft. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773. ; 62:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Sapphyrin is a pentapyrrolic expanded porphyrin with a 22π aromatic character. Herein, we report the synthesis of a 20π antiaromatic sapphyrin isomer 1 by oxidative cyclization of a pentapyrrane precursor P5 with a terminal β-linked pyrrole. The resulting isomer 1, containing a mis-linked bipyrrole unit in the skeleton, exhibits a reactivity for further oxidation due to the distinct antiaromatic electronic structure, affording a fused macrocycle 2, possessing a spiro-carbon-containing [5.6.5.6]-tetracyclic structure. Subsequent treatment with an acid afforded a weakly aromatic pyrrolone-appended N-confused corrole 3, and thermal fusion gave a [5.6.5.7]-tetracyclic-ring-embedded 14π aromatic triphyrin(2.1.1) analog 4. The cyclization at the mis-linked pyrrole moiety of P5 played a crucial role in synthesizing the antiaromatic porphyrinoid susceptible to facile transformation to novel porphyrinoids with variable aromaticity.

  • Optimal Status Updates for Minimizing Age of Correlated Information in IoT Networks With Energy Harvesting Sensors
  • 2024
  • In: IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. - : IEEE COMPUTER SOC. - 1536-1233 .- 1558-0660. ; 23:6, s. 6848-6864
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Many real-time applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) need to deal with correlated information generated by multiple sensors. The design of efficient status update strategies that minimize the Age of Correlated Information (AoCI) is a key factor. In this paper, we consider an IoT network consisting of sensors equipped with the energy harvesting (EH) capability. We optimize the average AoCI at the data fusion center (DFC) by appropriately managing the energy harvested by sensors, whose true battery states are unobservable during the decision-making process. Particularly, we first formulate the dynamic status update procedure as a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP), where the environmental dynamics are unknown to the DFC. In order to address the challenges arising from the causality of energy usage, unknown environmental dynamics, unobservability of sensors' true battery states, and large-scale discrete action space, we devise a deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based dynamic status update algorithm. The algorithm leverages the advantages of the soft actor-critic and long short-term memory techniques. Meanwhile, it incorporates our proposed action decomposition and mapping mechanism. Extensive simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm by comparing it with available DRL algorithms for POMDPs.

  • EfficientFi : Towards Large-Scale Lightweight WiFi Sensing via CSI Compression
  • 2022
  • In: IEEE Internet of Things Journal. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 2327-4662. ; 9:15, s. 13086-13095
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • WiFi technology has been applied to various places due to the increasing requirement of high-speed Internet access. Recently, besides network services, WiFi sensing is appealing in smart homes since it is device-free, cost-effective and privacy-preserving. Though numerous WiFi sensing methods have been developed, most of them only consider single smart home scenario. Without the connection of powerful cloud server and massive users, large-scale WiFi sensing is still difficult. In this paper, we firstly analyze and summarize these obstacles, and propose an efficient large-scale WiFi sensing framework, namely EfficientFi. The EfficientFi works with edge computing at WiFi APs and cloud computing at center servers. It consists of a novel deep neural network that can compress fine-grained WiFi Channel State Information (CSI) at edge, restore CSI at cloud, and perform sensing tasks simultaneously. A quantized auto-encoder and a joint classifier are designed to achieve these goals in an end-to-end fashion. To the best of our knowledge, the EfficientFi is the first IoT-cloud-enabled WiFi sensing framework that significantly reduces communication overhead while realizing sensing tasks accurately. We utilized human activity recognition and identification via WiFi sensing as two case studies, and conduct extensive experiments to evaluate the EfficientFi. The results show that it compresses CSI data from 1.368Mb/s to 0.768Kb/s with extremely low error of data reconstruction and achieves over 98% accuracy for human activity recognition.

  • Smart real-time evaluation of tunnel fire risk and evacuation safety via computer vision
  • 2024
  • In: Safety Science. - 0925-7535. ; 177
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The distribution of vehicles during a tunnel fire is a crucial factor that affects fire development and hazards, as well as the following evacuation and rescue operations. This work proposed a novel method using computer vision for assessing the real-time tunnel fire risk and evacuation safety by considering the classification and entry flow of vehicles. The proposed system utilizes YOLOv7 and DeepSORT for vehicle detection, classification, and tracking to enable a real-time digital twin for tunnel fire safety management. Vehicles are divided into 10 categories, in terms of their size, usage, number of passengers, fuel load, and peak fire HRR. After monitoring the vehicle flow at the tunnel portals, the real-time vehicle and fire load distribution are predicted. Then, the real-time tunnel fire scenarios and the safety of the evacuation process are evaluated based on the distribution of vehicles. The system is demonstrated in real road tunnels with traffic video cameras and exhibits a robust performance. The proposed vision-based real-time tunnel fire risk evaluation enables intelligent daily fire safety management and supports fire emergency response and decision-making.
