  • Extreme monsoon aridity episodes recorded in South China during Heinrich Events
  • 2015
  • In: Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0031-0182 .- 1872-616X. ; 440, s. 467-474
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Geological records of climate change since the last glaciation in South China, a core area of the East Asian monsoon, are key to understanding secular variation in the monsoon system. However, with the exception of the speleothems, records from this area with independent age control are few. We investigated aeolian sand deposition on a sand hill on the shore of Poyang Lake in South China and reconstructed the chronological sequence of aeolian deposition using Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating. Without exception, all aeolian sediments were deposited within seven periods that generally match the timing of Heinrich events and other cold periods in Greenland. We argue that aeolian sand accumulation in this region is most likely forced by extreme aridity driven by weakening of the summer monsoon, while the characteristics of this deposition are influenced by winter monsoon intensity. The monsoon shifts revealed here suggest a possible link between North Atlantic cooling and summer monsoon strength in South China, and support the intensities of cooling phases recorded in Greenland ice cores.

  • Insights into the changes in the proteome of Alzheimer disease elucidated by a meta-analysis
  • 2021
  • In: Scientific Data. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2052-4463. ; 8:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics is a powerful tool to explore pathogenic changes of a disease in an unbiased manner and has been used extensively in Alzheimer disease (AD) research. Here, by performing a meta-analysis of high-quality proteomic studies, we address which pathological changes are observed consistently and therefore most likely are of great importance for AD pathogenesis. We retrieved datasets, comprising a total of 21,588 distinct proteins identified across 857 postmortem human samples, from ten studies using labeled or label-free MS approaches. Our meta-analysis findings showed significant alterations of 757 and 1,195 proteins in AD in the labeled and label-free datasets, respectively. Only 33 proteins, some of which were associated with synaptic signaling, had the same directional change across the individual studies. However, despite alterations in individual proteins being different between the labeled and the label-free datasets, several pathways related to synaptic signaling, oxidative phosphorylation, immune response and extracellular matrix were commonly dysregulated in AD. These pathways represent robust changes in the human AD brain and warrant further investigation.

  • Beach ridges of Dali Lake in Inner Mongolia reveal precipitation variation during the Holocene
  • 2020
  • In: Journal of Quaternary Science. - : Wiley. - 0267-8179 .- 1099-1417. ; 35:5, s. 716-725
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Variability in East Asian summer monsoon precipitation during the Holocene remains of debate. In this study, we use a closed lake with well‐dated lake beach ridges located on the margin of the East Asian summer monsoon, a region highly sensitive to monsoon precipitation changes, to obtain a temporal sequence of water volume in North China. The elevation of each beach ridge calibrated to the modern lake level was surveyed. Optically stimulated luminescence dating of undisturbed sediments of beach ridges was performed. The lake area and water volume corresponding to each beach ridge were calculated using a digital elevation model. This study reveals relatively reduced monsoon precipitation from ~12 to 7 ka interrupted by strengthening of the monsoon circulation to a maximum from ~7 to ~5 ka and followed by greatly reduced monsoon intensity until the present day. These results demonstrate that changes in the East Asian summer monsoon precipitation may not be directly driven by global temperature or atmospheric CO2 content. Rather, we suggest that variation in the the monsoon margin precipitation is probably mainly driven by ice volume and subordinately by the summer solar insolation difference between mid‐latitude land and low‐latitude ocean.

  • A locally content-dependent filter for inter-perspective anti-aliasing
  • 2012
  • In: Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering. - : SPIE - International Society for Optical Engineering. - 9780819489371 ; , s. Art. no. 829006-
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Presentations on multiview and lightfield displays have become increasingly popular. The restricted number of views implies an unsmooth transition between views if objects with sharp edges are far from the display plane. The phenomenon is explained by inter-perspective aliasing. This is undesirable in applications where a correct perception of the scene is required, such as in science and medicine. Anti-aliasing filters have been proposed in the literature, and are defined according to the minimum and maximum depth present in the scene.  We suggest a method that subdivides the ray-space and adjusts the anti-aliasing filter to the scene contents locally. We further propose new filter kernels based on the ray space frequency domain that assures no aliasing, yet keeping maximum information unaltered. The proposed method outperforms filters of earlier works. Different filter kernels are compared. Details of the output are sharper using a proposed filter kernel, which also preserves the most information.
