Oral health and dental care of older persons-A systematic map of systematic reviews

- Objectives: To examine the current knowledge on oral health status and dental care of older persons through a systematic mapping of systematic reviews of low or moderate risk of bias. Background: Geriatric dentistry covers all aspects of oral health and oral care of older persons. Oral health is part of general health and contributes to a person's physical, psychological and social wellbeing. Methods: A literature search was performed in three different databases (PubMed, The Cochrane Library and Cinahl) within 12 domains: Dental caries, periodontitis, Orofacial pain and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain, mucosal lesions, oral motor function, dry mouth, halitosis, interaction between oral status and other medical conditions, ability to interrelate and communicate, quality of life, ethics and organisation of dental care for older persons. Systematic reviews were identified and scrutinised, highlighting scientific knowledge and knowledge gaps. Results: We included 32 systematic reviews of which 14 were judged to be of low/moderate risk of bias. Most of the domains lack systematic reviews with low or moderate risk of bias. In two of the domains evidence was identified; in institutionalised people aged 65 or older, effective oral hygiene can prevent pneumonia. Furthermore, there is an evidence of a relationship between malnutrition (protein energy-related malnutrition, PEM) and poor appetite and edentulousness. Conclusions: There is an urgent need for further research and evidence-based knowledge within most domains in geriatric dentistry and in other fields related to oral health and dental care for older persons striving for multi-disciplinary research programmes.

Studenter som medskapare av undervisning i att söka, samla och värdera information

- Denna rapport redogör för ett pedagogiskt utvecklingsprojekt som biblioteket på Malmö högskola genomfört under 2014 om studenter som medskapare av undervisning i informationssökning. Projektet har tilldelats pedagogiska utvecklingsmedel från utbildningsberedningen. Syftet med projektet har varit att utveckla metoder för att ta tillvara studenternas erfarenheter och tidigare kunskaper för att stödja deras informationssökning. Vi har velat undersöka på vilka sätt studenterna aktivt kan involveras i undervisningen genom att titta på olika former av brukarinvolvering. Utgångspunkten har varit att ökad delaktighet leder till en djupare förståelse hos studenterna för sitt eget lärande, men också en ökad insikt hos undervisande bibliotekarier för studenternas kontext. En av slutsatserna är att för att lyckas med studentinvolvering krävs en deltagarkultur där det faktiskt är möjligt att påverka. Brukarinvolvering handlar inte bara om metoder, utan det handlar även om att alla inblandade har en inställning som stödjer ökad studentdelaktighet.

- Informationssökning som en del av lärandeprocessen är det senaste tillskottet av högskolepedagogiska kurser på Malmö högskola. Kursens tillkomst tog sin avstamp i frågor som: Hur kan en undervisning som utvecklar studentens informationskompetens se ut? Vilka är lärandemålen? Vad behöver studenterna kunna om litteratur och informationssökning? Hur kan man examinera informationskompetens? I kursen utforskar vi hur man kan planera undervisning och examinationsformer som stärker studenternas kunskaper om informationssökning. Vi problematiserar att välja och värdera källor, att introducera studenter till vetenskapliga texter och genrer, vad informationskompetens är och hur det hänger samman med lärandemål. Det högskolepedagogiska kursutbudet på Malmö högskola består av ett kursprogram från Akademiskt lärarskap med inledande och avslutande obligatoriska kurser och där emellan valbara tematiska kurser. Roads to learning : the pedagogic idea and its applications at library and IT at Malmö university

- The Malmö university library and IT organization is a matrix organization which consists of seven departments (functions). Every function is responsible for a number of teams made up of staff from different functions. One of the teams is responsible for pedagogical development. When we speak of pedagogical tasks at Malmö university library we include teaching information literacy to students and faculty, as well as individual guidance in information seeking and work at the library reference desk. Every librarian at Malmö University has duty at the reference desk and the majority of librarians teach information literacy. The pedagogical team is made up of ten librarians. Within the Library and IT organization we also have a special work group which deals with competence development. We think of the pedagogical team and the competence development work group as the hub of a roundabout with four different exits: students, faculty, other institutions/libraries and our colleagues within the library and IT organization. The poster would concentrate on the different ways in which the team and competence development group support our colleagues, that is all librarians at Malmö university to improve their teaching and to become better information literacy guides. This includes for example: lectures on information literacy and teaching, “pedagogical cafés” (meetings where it is possible to raise pedagogical questions in an informal environment), writing courses, meetings to discuss guidance in information seeking, journal clubs where we discuss a topical article, and developing an idea paper on information literacy.

Students as co-creators : developing methods for increased student participation

- Letting students take an active part in their education is vital in higher education and there is a lot of research showing that students who are active learners also learn more effectively (eg Biggs & Tang 2011). This poster will illustrate a project where Malmö university library wanted to examine what student activity could mean in the context of information seeking, and where we wanted to involve students more actively in the design of the teaching activities. The project is called ”Students as co-creators of education in seeking, collecting and valuing information – development of methods for higher student participation” and goes on during 2014. We want to see in what ways students can be actively involved in teaching in order to create a deeper understanding within students for their role in their own learning - how can the experiences and knowledge of students contribute to their skills in relation to searching, collecting and valuing information? Within the project we have read articles on user involvement, discussed the literature we have read and we have also visited other organizations that work actively with user participation in order to learn more about different methods that can be used. Inspiration to the methods come from different areas, such as interaction design, city planning and public libraries. In this poster we will tell about our experiences from the project and the different methods we have tested (eg ”idea workshop”), the results we have got and how they influence our teaching about information literacy. - According to the Swedish higher education act, higher education should provide courses and programmes based on scholarship - but what does this mean in practice? In this project the library and the Centre for higher education at Malmö University collaborate in order to explore how teachers, librarians and students interact in an education based on scholarship. The purpose of the project is to investigate how education can be designed in order to be "based on scholarship", and thus to improve quality in education, but also to develop the relations between the Centre for higher education and the library at Malmö University. In previous studies we have seen that one of the most common questions students ask in the library concern scholarly texts (Lundgren, 2011), and also how the idea of academisation differ between different departments within the university (Ek, Ideland, Jönsson & Malmberg, 2011). From courses in higher education for teachers at Malmö University we see that the idea of "based on scholarship" can be expressed in many different ways, e.g. by using scholarly literature or through teachers that are also researchers. Thus, students, teachers and librarians are interlinked through this complex question of "based on scholarship". In the project we ask the following questions: How is an education "based on scholarship" perceived? How is an education "based on scholarship" expressed in different educational activities? How (If) do teachers, librarians and students work together with these questions? Does an interdisciplinary environment influence the understanding of scholarship and the activities related to this? We have interviewed teachers (programme responsibles), students and librarians from five different programmes within Malmö University. Respondents were chosen to represent different types of programmes (new professional, semi-professional and traditional social sciences programme). When we have analyzed our interviews we see the following themes: how to integrate education and research, progression, the relationship between research and students' future careers, interdisciplinarity and the role of the library. Our results show that an education based on scholarship is managed differently within the librarian practice, the research practice and the education practice. Members of the different practices identify and participate in research in different ways. We also see that education based on scholarship is often described as reading and using research literature. Both students and teachers think that students develop their critical thinking skills. The students' degree projects are described as important when it comes to integrating research and education. How research can be used in students' future careers is quite unclear. From our results it is obvious that the research within the university departments is invisible for the students. Also students do not participate in research.
