  • Gait in Mild Alzheimer's Disease: Feasibility of Multi-Center Measurement in the Clinic and Home with Body-Worn Sensors: A Pilot Study.
  • 2018
  • In: Journal of Alzheimer's disease : JAD. - 1875-8908. ; 63:1, s. 331-341
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Gait is emerging as a potential diagnostic tool for cognitive decline. The 'Deep and Frequent Phenotyping for Experimental Medicine in Dementia Study' (D&FP) is a multicenter feasibility study embedded in the United Kingdom Dementia Platform designed to determine participant acceptability and feasibility of extensive and repeated phenotyping to determine the optimal combination of biomarkers to detect disease progression and identify early risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Gait is included as a clinical biomarker. The tools to quantify gait in the clinic and home, and suitability for multi-center application have not been examined. Six centers from the National Institute for Health Research Translational Research Collaboration in Dementia initiative recruited 20 individuals with early onset AD. Participants wore a single wearable (tri-axial accelerometer) and completed both clinic-based and free-living gait assessment. A series of macro (behavioral) and micro (spatiotemporal) characteristics were derived from the resultant data using previously validated algorithms. Results indicate good participant acceptability, and potential for use of body-worn sensors in both the clinic and the home. Recommendations for future studies have been provided. Gait has been demonstrated to be a feasible and suitable measure, and future research should examine its suitability as a biomarker in AD.

  • Geosynthetic-reinforced pile-supported embankments − 3D discrete numerical analyses of the interaction and mobilization mechanisms
  • 2021
  • In: Engineering structures. - : Elsevier BV. - 0141-0296 .- 1873-7323. ; 242, s. 112337-112337
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Three-dimensional numerical analyses using the discrete element method are conducted to investigate several fundamental aspects related to soil-structure interaction and mobilization mechanisms in the geosynthetic-reinforced and pile-supported embankments. The contributions of the soil arching, tensioned membrane effect, friction interaction, subsoil support, and punching failure are investigated. The results indicated that the inclusion of the geosynthetic enhances the stress transfer from the subsoil to piles due to the tensioned membrane action, and the stress distribution is more uniform as compared to piled embankment without geosynthetic. However, the tension distribution in geosynthetic is not uniform and the maximum tension occurs near the pile edge. Numerical results also proved that the subsoil provides substantial support and reduces the reinforcement tension while shear stresses are mobilized along the upper and lower sides of soil-geosynthetic interfaces. These mechanisms should be considered in theoretical models to produce a more realistic approach. Finally, ten available design methods are reviewed and compared to the numerical results to assess the performance of analytical models. The results showed that the design method of Pham, CUR 226 design guideline, and EBGEO design standard agree well with the numerical results and are generally better than the results of all other methods.

  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • IntroductionParticipating in sport is a vital aspect of many young people’s lives. Since the 1970s, increased participation among young people have been reported across the developed world (Green, 2010). While child and youth sport is primarily taking place in schools in countries such as the USA, Canada and UK, voluntary sports clubs have an important role in this respect in the Scandinavian countries (Ibsen and Seippel, 2010). In Sweden, around ninety per cent participate in a sport club at one time or another during their youth (Thedin Jakobsson, 2015). During adolescence, however, many are dropping out of sport, which is also an international trend that has been highlighted in a number of studies (Coakley and Pike, 2009; De Knop et al., 1996; Findlay et al., 2009; Pilgaard, 2013; Seabra et al., 2007; Scheerder et al., 2006). A variety of causes for dropping out (Fraser-Thomas et al., this volume) have been examined; for example conflicts of interest, lack of fun and perception of low abilities (Weiss and Amorose, 2008); conflicts with coaches, and the need for more playing time (Weiss and Williams, 2004); as well as negative factors related to early specialization (Wall and Côté, 2007).
