  • Non-formal spaces of socio-cultural accompaniment: Responding to young unaccompanied refugees – reflections from the Partispace project
  • 2018
  • In: European Educational Research Journal. - : SAGE Publications. - 1474-9041. ; 17:2, s. 305-322
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Drawing on research in progress in the Partispace project we make a case for the recognition of the importance of non-formal spaces in response to young refugees across three different national contexts: Frankfurt in Germany; Gothenburg in Sweden; and Manchester in the UK. It is argued that recognition of local regulation and national controls of immigration which support climates of hostility makes it important to recognise and affirm the significance of non-formal spaces and ‘small spaces close to home’ which are often developed in the ‘third space’ of civil society and arise from the impulses driven by the solidarity of volunteers. In these contexts it is important that practices of hospitality can develop which symbolically reconstitute refugees as hosts and subjects of a democratic conversation, without which there is no possible administrative solution to the refugee crisis. It is essential that educational spaces such as schools, colleges and universities forge strong bonds with such emergent spaces.

  • 2022
  • In: Teorier för socialt arbete Del 2 Normalitet, förkroppsligad erfarenhet och motstånd / Tina Mattsson & Em Andersson (red.).. - Malmö : Gleerups Utbildning AB. - 9789151107639
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Exploring moral injury among parents with children in out-of-home care
  • 2024
  • In: Child & Family Social Work. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 1356-7500 .- 1365-2206.
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article brings together the experiences of parents whose children are placed in out-of-home care (OHC) with the theoretical concept of moral injury. The findings are based on empirical data from a research and development project conducted in seven Swedish municipalities with the aim of developing support for such parents. This article draws on a data set of qualitative interviews with 40 parents, 30 mothers and 10 fathers, with children in OHC. The interview transcripts were analysed thematically, with an abductive approach to theories and the empirical data. The findings illustrate how parents of children in OHC experience moral injury in relation to seven aspects: professionals' morally problematic and distressing behaviour, problematic services, an adversarial system, systemic bias, parent's actions, children's withdrawal and feeling excluded. The injuries are related to events in several periods—prior to the child's removal, during the execution of removal and during OHC—and tend to last for many years. These findings stress that the social services must be aware of the injuries parents experience and must minimize the possible harm and moral injury. We also suggest that parents of children in OHC should have an appointed social worker as a means of support.

  • Fathering Practices in Sweden During the COVID-19: Experiences of Syrian Refugee Fathers
  • 2021
  • In: Frontiers in Sociology. - : Frontiers Media SA. - 2297-7775. ; 6
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article explores fathering practices among Syrian refugee families in Sweden. Syrian refugees provide an example of people who migrated because of a single major event: the war in Syria. The article examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on fathering practices. The Swedish COVID-19 strategy differed from those adopted in many other countries. Lockdowns were minimal and were not stringently enforced, based on the assumption that individuals would trust the authorities and would take personal responsibility for complying with their guidelines and recommendations. Previous research suggests that migrants and other vulnerable groups were not always well informed about the public policies introduced prior to and during the pandemic. The article draws on empirical data from a wider research project on the family lives of Syrian migrants in Sweden. The authors present their findings from an analysis of eleven ethnographically informed semi-structured interviews, carried out before and during the pandemic, with married fathers who had been living in Sweden for several years. In this article, they focus on three cases representing fathers with varied educational backgrounds and employment histories. These families had in common what are considered by Swedish standards to be overcrowded living conditions; they were forced to accept close family proximity, both physically and emotionally, as they no longer had the supportive networks they were used to in Syria. The three fathers were found to rely more heavily on information provided by the people with whom they were in contact in Sweden than on policies and recommendations from the authorities. These findings confirmed that the previous experiences among refugees of shifting policies regarding migration and integration had lowered their trust in government. They had learnt that they needed to rely on mutual dependency not only between spouses, but also between parents and children.

  • Fathers and parental support in everyday family life : Informal support in Sweden beyond the welfare state
  • 2015
  • In: Families, Relationships and Societies. - : Ingenta. - 2046-7435 .- 2046-7443. ; 14:2, s. 267-280
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Based on a qualitative study of Swedish parents with small children, this paper focuses on fathers’ access to informal support in their parenting, e.g. in the form of practical help and emotional support. The paper discusses the importance of informal social capital in parents’ everyday lives, a support that lies beyond the auspices of the welfare state. Family members play a significant role with regard to practical help with the children, whilst friends and particularly work colleagues are important sources of emotional support, as fathers share the joys and burdens of parenthood with colleagues. Discursive resources concerning involved and emotional fatherhood are thus available to the fathers interviewed in the study, and the workplace becomes an arena in which fathering practices are formed. The findings support the idea of role expansion, that having access to multiple arenas, including in this case the workplace, can serve as a positive resource for working parents.
