    • In statistics, samples are drawn from a population in a data-generating process (DGP). Standard errors measure the uncertainty in estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence-generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty-nonstandard errors (NSEs). We study NSEs by letting 164 teams test the same hypotheses on the same data. NSEs turn out to be sizable, but smaller for more reproducible or higher rated research. Adding peer-review stages reduces NSEs. We further find that this type of uncertainty is underestimated by participants.

  • Age bias in artificial intelligence (AI): a visual properties analysis of AI images of older versus younger people

    • Concerns about age-related biases in Artificial Intelligence (AI)’s design, development, and data generation raise alarms for potential social inequalities. AI art-generators like MidJourney, known for creating distinctive and artistic images, have gained attention recently. However, the critical examination of their potential biases remains limited. Our study aims to investigate age-related bias in MidJourney by comparing how older and younger individuals are visually depicted. Using 19 keywords (as text prompts) tied to domains of potential social exclusion for older adults, we automated the collection of “old person” and “young person” images in MidJourney. The text-to-image prompts yielded 456 AI-generated images that were analyzed with Amazon Rekognition image detection software to transform them to quantitative data. Data were compared statistically using STATA (version 16). The results show that the images of older people are significantly less bright (p< 0.001) and less sharp (p< 0.001) than the images of younger people. Additionally, images of older people have significantly more smile expressions (16%; p< 0.001) and are more likely to be wearing glasses (56%; p< 0.001) compared to images of younger people (6% and 12%, respectively). The findings reveal that MidJourney’s algorithm associates older people with a negative sense of antiquity, irrelevance, and dread. The findings also align with the Stereotype Content Model in which older people are seen as having warm personalities but not as competent or capable as younger people. We interpret these results as age bias that the AI art generator MidJourney has learned and in turn, creates, through image generation.

    • Electrically conductive metal-organic frameworks (cMOFs) have become a topic of intense interest in recent years because of their great potential in electrochemical energy storage, electrocatalysis, and sensing applications. Most of the cMOFs reported hitherto are 2D structures, and 3D cMOFs remain rare. Herein we report FeTHQ a 3D cMOF synthesized from tetrahydroxy-1,4-quinone (THQ) and iron(II) sulfate salt. FeTHQexhibited a conductivity of 3.3 +/- 0.55 mS cm(-1) at 300 K, which is high for 3D cMOFs. The conductivity of FeTHQis valence-dependent. A higher conductivity was measured with the as-prepared FeTHQ than with the air-oxidized and sodium naphthalenide-reduced samples.

    • 本研究以2006至2014年间新闻媒体公开披露的69部国内电视剧的95条交易记录为例,采用内容分析法,通过相关分析与建构结构方程模型,探究市场因素与电视剧版权价格间的关系,以及显著相关的市场因素对电视剧版权价格的影响机制。研究发现,在根据文献所梳理的诸多市场因素中,"授权平台"、"播出方式"、"权利性质"、"电视剧年产量"等因素与电视剧版权价格具有一定的相关性;影响效果由高到低的路径分别为:授权平台→版权价格、电视剧年产量→版权价格,且均为直接效应主导。

  • Socioeconomic differences in digital inequality among Chinese older adults : Results from a nationally representative sample

    • The current study seeks to investigate digital inequality among older adults in China, specifically examining two socially defined age groups: young-old adults (aged 60–74) and old-old adults (aged 75+). Descriptive statistics and multiple regression were used to examine the prevalence of and identify the factors associated with Internet access, usage (frequency and breadth containing 11 activities), skills, and social support. The study used data from the 2018 China Longitudinal Ageing Social Survey (CLASS) which consisted of 11,419 respondents aged 60 years and older. We found that 40.22% of older adults had access to the Internet, and 18.27% used it regularly. Socioeconomic factors played a crucial role in determining Internet access and usage, with young-old adults with higher education using the Internet more frequently, deliberately, and competently. Those with higher economic status had greater social support to use it, and the old-old adults with higher socioeconomic status were more likely to have Internet access. This study has implications for prioritizing targeted policies and interventions aimed at supporting socioeconomically disadvantaged older adults and ensuring equal opportunities for all to access and benefit from the digital world.

    • Aims/hypothesis: The study aimed to investigate the effects of HLA class I genes on susceptibility to type 1 diabetes with different onset ages, in addition to the well-established effects of HLA class II genes. Methods: A total of 361 patients with type 1 diabetes (192 patients with onset <18 years and 169 patients with onset ≥18 years) and 500 healthy control participants from China were enrolled and genotyped for the HLA-A, -B, -C, -DQA1, -DQB1 and -DRB1 genes using next-generation sequencing. Results: The susceptible DR3 (β = −0.09, p = 0.0009) and DR4-DQ8 (β = −0.13, p = 0.0059) haplotypes were negatively associated with onset age, while the protective DR11 (β = 0.21, p = 0.0314) and DR12 (β = 0.27, p < 0.0001) haplotypes were positively associated with onset age. After adjustment for linkage disequilibrium with DR-DQ haplotypes, A*11:01:01 was positively associated with onset age (β = 0.06, p = 0.0370), while the susceptible C*15:02:01 was negatively associated with onset age (β = −0.21, p = 0.0050). The unit for β was double square-root (fourth root) transformed years of change in onset age associated with per copy of the HLA haplotype/allele. In addition, B*46:01:01 was protective (OR 0.41, 0.46; pc [corrected for multiple comparisons] = 0.0044, 0.0040), whereas A*24:02:01 (OR 2.71, 2.25; pc = 0.0003, 0.0002) and B*54:01:01 (OR 3.96, 3.79; pc = 0.0018, 0.0004) were predisposing in both the <18 group and the ≥18 group compared with healthy control participants. In the context of DR4-DQ4, A*11:01:01 (61.29% vs 28.26%, pc = 0.0144) was increased while the predisposing A*24:02:01 (19.35% vs 47.83%, pc = 0.0403) was decreased in patients with onset ≥18 years when compared with patients with onset <18 years. Conclusions/interpretation: In addition to DR-DQ haplotypes, novel HLA class I alleles were detected to play a role in susceptibility to type 1 diabetes with different onset ages, which could improve the understanding of disease heterogeneity and has implications for the design of future studies.     • Background: The aim of this study was to investigate differences in clinical features and HLA genotypes between adult-onset and childhood-onset patients with type 1 diabetes in a Chinese population. Materials and Methods: This study enrolled 716 Han Chinese patients with type 1 diabetes from Guangdong (258 childhood-onset and 458 adult-onset) to compare their clinical features. Of them 214 patients with classical type 1 diabetes (100 childhood-onset and 114 adult-onset) were selected for HLA DR and DQ genotyping by next-generation sequencing. Results: Adult-onset patients were characterized by longer duration of symptoms before diagnosis, lower frequency of DKA at disease onset, less frequent autoantibody positivity, higher serum C-peptide concentrations, and better glycemic control. These findings were replicated in the restricted cohort of 214 patients with classical type 1 diabetes. Compared with childhood-onset patients, adult-onset patients had a lower frequency of the DR9 haplotype, as well as lower frequency of high-risk DR3/DR4 and DR3/DR9 genotypes, but higher frequency of DR3/DR3 genotype and DR3/X, DR4/X or DR9/X (X, non-risk) genotypes. Conclusions: Adult-onset type 1 diabetic patients with susceptible haplotypes (DR3, DR4 or DR9) were more likely to carry protective DR-DQ haplotypes than childhood-onset patients, which suggested the association between less risk DR-DQ genotypes and the less severe clinical manifestation in adult-onset patients.

    • The ongoing digitalisation of societies, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, has led to increased efforts to ensure the digital inclusion of older adults. Digital inclusion strategies throughout the COVID-19 pandemic predominantly focused on increasing access and basic digital literacy of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for all members of society. Older adults, who are more likely to experience digital exclusion, are amongst the target groups of digital inclusion strategies. We propose that beyond digital inclusion, there is a need to focus on digital participation and optimise opportunities for everyone to participate in communities and society in post-pandemic times. Creative digital skills are the foundation of digital participation and can lead to a variety of contributions. Digital participation offers conditions that support agency and active contributions in a digitalised society. Taking macro-, meso-, and micro-level enablers of digital participation in later life into account, we argue for the establishment and implementation of multi-layered and multisectoral partnerships that address environmental factors (including social and physical dimensions) of digital participation and create opportunities for diverse, meaningful and fulfilling engagement with ICTs in later life. The partnership approach can be used in designing and implementing digital participation programmes and should be further evaluated against the needs and lived experiences of older individuals. Foresighted research is needed to investigate key factors of effective partnerships for optimising environments for digital participation in later life.

  • Phosphate Sorption Speciation and Precipitation Mechanisms on Amorphous Aluminum Hydroxide

    • Aluminum (Al) oxides are important adsorbents for phosphate in soils and sediments, and significantly limit Phosphate (P) mobility and bioavailability, but the speciation of surface-adsorbed phosphate on Al oxides remains poorly understood. Here, phosphate sorption speciation on amorphous Al hydroxide (AAH) was determined under pH 3-8 and P concentration of 0.03 mM-15 mM using various spectroscopic approaches, and phosphate precipitation mechanisms were discussed as well. AAH exhibits an extremely high phosphate sorption capacity, increasing from 3.80 mmol/g at pH 7 to 4.63 mmol/g at pH 3. Regardless of reaction pH, with increasing P sorption loading, the sorption mechanism transits from bidentate binuclear (BB) surface complexation with d(P-Al) of 3.12 angstrom to surface precipitation of analogous amorphous AlPO4 (AAP), possibly with ternary complexes, such as (equivalent to Al-O)(2)-PO2-Al, as intermediate products. Additionally, the percentage of precipitated phosphate occurring in AAP linearly and positively correlates with P sorption loading. Compared to phosphate reaction with ferrihydrite, phosphate adsorbs and precipitates more readily on AAH due to the higher solubility product (K-sp) of AAH. The formation of AAP particles involves Al-III release, which is promoted by phosphate adsorption, and its subsequent precipitation with phosphate at AAH surfaces or in the bulk solution.
