  • 2023
  • In: ACS Nano. - : American Chemical Society. - 1936-0851 .- 1936-086X. ; 17:6, s. 5211-5295
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Humans rely increasingly on sensors to address grand challenges and to improve quality of life in the era of digitalization and big data. For ubiquitous sensing, flexible sensors are developed to overcome the limitations of conventional rigid counterparts. Despite rapid advancement in bench-side research over the last decade, the market adoption of flexible sensors remains limited. To ease and to expedite their deployment, here, we identify bottlenecks hindering the maturation of flexible sensors and propose promising solutions. We first analyze challenges in achieving satisfactory sensing performance for real-world applications and then summarize issues in compatible sensor-biology interfaces, followed by brief discussions on powering and connecting sensor networks. Issues en route to commercialization and for sustainable growth of the sector are also analyzed, highlighting environmental concerns and emphasizing nontechnical issues such as business, regulatory, and ethical considerations. Additionally, we look at future intelligent flexible sensors. In proposing a comprehensive roadmap, we hope to steer research efforts towards common goals and to guide coordinated development strategies from disparate communities. Through such collaborative efforts, scientific breakthroughs can be made sooner and capitalized for the betterment of humanity.

  • Carrier Generation Engineering toward 18% Efficiency Organic Solar Cells by Controlling Film Microstructure
  • 2022
  • In: Advanced Energy Materials. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 1614-6832 .- 1614-6840. ; 12:19
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The single bulk-heterojunction active layer based on non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) has dominated the power conversional efficiencies above 18% in state-of-the-art organic solar cells (OSCs). However, a deep understanding of the relationship between charge carrier process and film microstructure remains unclear for emerging NFA OSCs. Herein, with the superstar PM6:Y6 blend as a model, the charge generation process in active layers is successfully manipulated by designing three different film microstructures, and they are correlated with the final photovoltaic performance in OSC devices. The amount of intermediate intra-moiety excited states from the nanoscale Y6 aggregates can be effectively enhanced by controlling the phase separation domains and film crystallinity in the bicontinuous PM6:Y6 networks. This robustly improves the hole transfer, and thus promotes charge generation. As a result, the optimal films show superior device performance, that is, the high efficiencies of 16.53% and 17.98% for PM6:Y6- and D18:Y6-based single junction OSCs, respectively. The results presented here give a rational guide for optimizing the charge carrier process through controlling morphological microstructures toward high-performance NFA OSCs.

  • Data-Driven Controlled Synthesis of Oriented Quasi-Spherical CsPbBr3 Perovskite Materials
  • 2024
  • In: Angewandte Chemie International Edition. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 1433-7851 .- 1521-3773. ; 63:14

    • Controlled synthesis of lead-halide perovskite crystals is challenging yet attractive because of the pivotal role played by the crystal structure and growth conditions in regulating their properties. This study introduces data-driven strategies for the controlled synthesis of oriented quasi-spherical CsPbBr3, alongside an investigation into the synthesis mechanism. High-throughput rapid characterization of absorption spectra and color under ultraviolet illumination was conducted using 23 possible ligands for the synthesis of CsPbBr3 crystals. The links between the absorption spectra slope (difference in the absorbance at 400 nm and 450 nm divided by a wavelength interval of 50 nm) and crystal size were determined through statistical analysis of more than 100 related publications. Big data analysis and machine learning were employed to investigate a total of 688 absorption spectra and 652 color values, revealing correlations between synthesis parameters and properties. Ex situ characterization confirmed successful synthesis of oriented quasi-spherical CsPbBr3 perovskites using polyvinylpyrrolidone and Acacia. Density functional theory calculations highlighted strong adsorption of Acacia on the (110) facet of CsPbBr3. Optical properties of the oriented quasi-spherical perovskites prepared with these data-driven strategies were significantly improved. This study demonstrates that data-driven controlled synthesis facilitates morphology-controlled perovskites with excellent optical properties.

  • Wide-field-of-view auto-coupling optical antenna system for high-speed bidirectional optical wireless communications in C band
  • 2023
  • In: Optics Express. - : Optica Publishing Group. - 1094-4087. ; 31:20, s. 33435-33448
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Due to a great many superior features of infrared light communication (ILC), like high capacity and strong privacy, ILC is considered a potential candidate for serving the high demands of beyond fifth-generation/sixth-generation (B5G/6 G) communication systems. However, the terminal's limited field-of-view (FOV) induces great difficulty in establishing line-of-sight (LoS) link between the transceiver and the terminal. In this paper, we propose a wide-FOV auto-coupling optical antenna system that utilizes a wide-FOV telecentric lens to collect incident infrared beams and automatically couple them into a specific single-mode-fiber (SMF) channel of fiber array and optical switch. The performance of this optical antenna system is assessed through simulation and manual alignment operation, and validated by automatic alignment results. A coupling loss of less than 10.6 dB within a FOV of 100(degrees )for both downstream and upstream beams in C band is demonstrated by the designed system. Furthermore, we establish a bidirectional optical wireless communications (OWC) system employing this antenna and a fiber-type modulating retro-reflector (MRR) system in the terminal. Both 10-Gbps on-off keying (OOK) downstream and upstream transmissions are successfully realized with the FOV of up to 100(degrees) in C band where the measured bit-error-rate (BER) is lower than 3.8 x 10-3. To the best of our knowledge, this is a brand-new auto-coupling optical antenna system with the largest FOV in ILC automatic alignment works in terminals that have ever been reported.

  • Impact of Mountains in Southern China on the Eocene Climates of East Asia
  • 2022
  • In: Journal of Geophysical Research - Atmospheres. - 2169-897X .- 2169-8996. ; 127:17
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Inconsistencies in the Eocene climates of East Asia have been revealed in both geological studies and simulations. Several earlier reconstructions showed an arid zonal band in mid-latitude China, but others showed a humid climate in the same region. Moreover, previous Eocene modeling studies have demonstrated that climate models can simulate both scenarios in China. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the cause of this model spread. We conducted a series of experiments using Norwegian Earth System Model 1-F and examined the impact of mountains in Southern China on the simulated Eocene climate. These mountains, including the Gangdese and Southeast Mountains, are located along the main path of water vapor transport to East Asia. Our results reveal that the Southeast Mountains play the dominant role in controlling the simulated precipitation in Eastern China during the Eocene. When the heights of the Southeast Mountains exceed similar to 2,000 m, an arid zonal band appears in mid-latitude China, whereas humid climates appear in Eastern China when the elevation of the Southeast Mountains is relatively low.

  • Helical Copper Redox Mediator with Low Electron Recombination for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells
  • 2021
  • In: ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2168-0485. ; 9:15, s. 5252-5259
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Redox mediators play a major role in determining the photocurrent and photovoltage in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Copper complexes are a good option for redox mediators but suffer from electron recombination. The traditional method is to add 4-(tert-butyl)pyridine (TBP) to the electrolyte, which is coordinated with the empty orbit of Ti, thereby slowing down the oxidized mediator's ability to capture electrons. However, this strategy will result in competitive coordination between the redox mediator and TBP, decreasing the stability of the device. In this study, two helical copper(I) complexes are synthesized and applied to TBP-free solar cells. La (1,3-bis(2,2'-bipyridin-6-yloxy)propane) and Lb (1,3-bis[(6'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridin-6-yl)oxy]propane) tend to form double-stranded helicates ([Cu-2(Ln)(2)](2+), n = a, b) rather than mononuclear complexes ([Cu(Ln)](+), n = a, b). To facilitate quantitative analysis of the complexes, Cu(I)Ln and Cu(II)Ln (n = a, b) are used as molecular formulae. (CuLa)-La-I and Cu(I)Lb are characterized by electrospray mass spectroscopy, H-1 NMR spectroscopy, and electrochemistry. J-V measurement shows that both V-oc and J(sc) increase with the increase of (CuLa)-La-I concentration (below 0.1 M), and the best power conversion efficiency is 8.2%. The relationship between Cu(I) concentration and recombination for further study was measured by IMVS.

  • Low-cost, high-speed multispectral imager via spatiotemporal modulation based on a color camera
  • 2023
  • In: Optics Express. - : Optica Publishing Group. - 1094-4087. ; 31:25, s. 42613-42623
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Spectral imaging is a powerful tool in industrial processes, medical imaging, and fundamental scientific research. However, for the commonly used spatial/spectral-scanning spectral imager, the slow response time has posed a big challenge for its employment in dynamic scenes. In this paper, we propose a spatiotemporal modulation concept and build a simple, low-cost spectral imager by combining a liquid crystal (LC) cell with a commercial color camera. By the synergic effect of temporal modulation of the LC materials and spatial modulation of the Bayer filter in a color camera, high-quality multispectral imaging is successfully demonstrated with a high rate of 8 Hz, far beyond the counterparts. Experimental results show that even with three tuning states of the LC material, optical signals with a 10-nm band can be resolved in the range between 410 and 700 nm by this method, overcoming the tradeoff between spectral resolution and time resolution. As a proof of demonstration, we present its potential usage for metamerism recognition, showing superiority over traditional color cameras with more spectral details. Considering its low cost, miniaturization and monolithic-integration ability on color sensors, this simple approach may bring the spectral imaging technology closer to the consumer market and even to ubiquitous smartphones for health care, food inspection and other applications.

  • In-situ growth of low-dimensional perovskite-based insular nanocrystals for highly efficient light emitting diodes
  • 2023
  • In: Light. - : SPRINGERNATURE. - 2095-5545 .- 2047-7538. ; 12:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Regulation of perovskite growth plays a critical role in the development of high-performance optoelectronic devices. However, judicious control of the grain growth for perovskite light emitting diodes is elusive due to its multiple requirements in terms of morphology, composition, and defect. Herein, we demonstrate a supramolecular dynamic coordination strategy to regulate perovskite crystallization. The combined use of crown ether and sodium trifluoroacetate can coordinate with A site and B site cations in ABX(3) perovskite, respectively. The formation of supramolecular structure retard perovskite nucleation, while the transformation of supramolecular intermediate structure enables the release of components for slow perovskite growth. This judicious control enables a segmented growth, inducing the growth of insular nanocrystal consist of low-dimensional structure. Light emitting diode based on this perovskite film eventually brings a peak external quantum efficiency up to 23.9%, ranking among the highest efficiency achieved. The homogeneous nano-island structure also enables high-efficiency large area (1 cm(2)) device up to 21.6%, and a record high value of 13.6% for highly semi-transparent ones.

  • Scatter Artifacts Removal Usings Using Learning-Based Method for CBCT in IGRT System
  • 2018
  • In: IEEE Access. - : IEEE-INST ELECTRICAL ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC. - 2169-3536. ; 6, s. 78031-78037
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Cone-beam-computed tomography (CBCT) has shown enormous potential in recent years, but it is limited by severe scatter artifacts. This paper proposes a scatter-correction algorithm based on a deep convolutional neural network to reduce artifacts for CBCT in an image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) system. A two-step registration method that is essential in our algorithm is implemented to preprocess data before training. The testing result on real data acquired from the IGRT system demonstrates the ability of our approach to learn artifacts distribution. Furthermore, the proposed method can be applied to enhance the performance on such applications as dose estimation and segmentation.

  • Water Pipeline Leakage Detection Based on Coherent φ-OTDR and Deep Learning Technology
  • 2024
  • In: Applied Sciences. - : Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI). - 2076-3417. ; 14:9
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Leakage in water supply pipelines remains a significant challenge. It leads to resource and economic waste. Researchers have developed several leak detection methods, including the use of embedded sensors and pressure prediction. The former approach involves pre-installing detectors inside pipelines to detect leaks. This method allows for the precise localization of leak points. The stability is compromised because of the wireless signal strength. The latter approach, which relies on pressure measurements to predict leak events, does not achieve precise leak point localization. To address these challenges, in this paper, a coherent optical time-domain reflectometry (φ-OTDR) system is employed to capture vibration signal phase information. Subsequently, two pre-trained neural network models based on CNN and Resnet18 are responsible for processing this information to accurately identify vibration events. In an experimental setup simulating water pipelines, phase information from both leaking and non-leaking pipe segments is collected. Using this dataset, classical CNN and ResNet18 models are trained, achieving accuracy rates of 99.7% and 99.5%, respectively. The multi-leakage point experiment results indicate that the Resnet18 model has better generalization compared to the CNN model. The proposed solution enables long-distance water-pipeline precise leak point localization and accurate vibration event identification.
