  • 3D local structure around Zn in Kti11p as a representative Zn-(Cys)4 motif as obtained by MXAN
  • 2008
  • In: Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications - BBRC. - : Elsevier BV. - 0006-291X .- 1090-2104. ; 374:1, s. 28-32
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Zinc is an important component of many proteins that play key roles in transcription, translation, and catalysis. Kti11p, DESR1, both belonging to a protein family characterized by a CSL zinc finger domain, and the co-catalytic zinc-protein PML containing a Zn2+ binding domain called RING or C3HC4 finger are all structurally determined by NMR although the zinc sites are silent to this spectroscopical method. The comparison of X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) data for the three proteins demonstrates that fingerprints effect is a reliable method for a primary characterization of ligand species. Ab initio full MS Calculations performed by MAN are applied to obtain chemical and stereo structural information around the Zn ion in Kti11p. For the first time this high-spatial resolution technique confirms the formation of a stable Zn tetrahedral configuration with four sulfur ligands, and returns extremely accurate bond angle information between ligands.

  • Graphene oxide-based polymeric membranes for broad water pollutant removal
  • 2015
  • In: RSC Advances. - : Royal Society of Chemistry. - 2046-2069. ; 5:122, s. 100651-100662
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Graphene oxide (GO) and its derivatives display excellent removal abilities of water contaminants; however, the complex preparation process of GO-based adsorbents and difficult collection of GO sheets during the adsorption process limit their practical applications. Hence, three kinds of GO-based polymeric membranes with specific adsorption characteristics were fabricated by a facile blending method, including GO/PES membrane, reduced GO (RGO)/PES membrane, and polyethyleneimine (PEI) coated GO membrane of GO@PEI/PES membrane. The GO/PES membrane exhibited selective adsorption for cationic dyes, the RGO/PES membrane exhibited selective adsorption for endocrine disruptors, and the GO@PEI/PES membrane exhibited selective adsorption for anionic dyes. The adsorption data fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm well, and the adsorption process was controlled by the interparticle diffusion. The thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption reactions were spontaneous and exothermic processes. The dynamic adsorption results indicated that the prepared membranes could be used in wastewater filtration. The study indicated that GO-based polymeric membranes with broad water pollutant removal could be fabricated by facile strategies, and the problem of difficult collection of GO sheets during and after adsorption process was solved.

  • MLV : Robust Image Matching via Multilayer Verification
  • 2024
  • In: IEEE Sensors Journal. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 1530-437X .- 1558-1748. ; 24:9, s. 14454-14470
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Image matching is one of the hottest research topics in the field of computer vision, and it aims to compute the correct feature correspondences between images; however, under the influence of illumination changes and scale changes, relying only on the similarity between feature descriptors as the basis for judging feature matching tends to generate more false feature correspondences. To solve the above problems, in this article, we systematically analyze various factors that lead to false feature correspondences, design corresponding solutions for these various factors, and then propose a multilayer verification (MLV) image-matching method. First, eliminating the potential mismatches caused by brute force matching; second, eliminating the mismatches caused by the ambiguity of descriptors; and third, eliminating the feature matches that do not satisfy geometric constraints. Finally, we test the proposed MLV method on several open-source datasets and make a comprehensive comparison with the classical methods. Experimental results show that the MLV method not only can compute more true feature correspondences but also has a low computational cost. In addition, we applied the MLV method to sparse point cloud reconstruction to demonstrate its practical application value. Source code: https://github.com/caomw/mlv.

  • High-Efficiency Formamidinium Lead Bromide Perovskite Nanocrystal-Based Light-Emitting Diodes Fabricated via a Surface Defect Self-Passivation Strategy
  • 2020
  • In: Advanced Optical Materials. - : WILEY-V C H VERLAG GMBH. - 2162-7568 .- 2195-1071. ; 8:6
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Formamidinium lead bromide (FAPbBr(3)) nanocrystals (NCs) demonstrate great potential in light-emitting diode (LED) applications due to their pure green emission and excellent stability. However, the abundant defects at the surface of the NCs act as charge trapping centers and significantly increase the trap-assisted nonradiative recombination channels, hampering the performance improvement of LEDs based on FAPbBr(3) NCs. Herein, a facile self-passivation strategy of the surface defects is developed by introducing excess formamidinium bromide (FABr) during the colloidal synthesis of NCs, leading to much improved photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of the obtained NCs. In addition, enhanced charge transport property is measured in the assembled films owing to the simultaneously declined insulating ligands at the surface of NCs. The molar ratio of FABr and PbBr2 is rationally optimized during the synthesis of NCs and high-efficient green-emissive LEDs are fabricated with a champion current efficiency of 76.8 cd A(-1), corresponding to an external quantum efficiency of 17.1%, which is among the best-performing green LEDs based on perovskite NCs so far.

  • Interaction of Individual Skyrmions in a Nanostructured Cubic Chiral Magnet
  • 2018
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - : American Physical Society. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 120:19
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We report direct evidence of the field-dependent character of the interaction between individual magnetic skyrmions as well as between skyrmions and edges in B20-type FeGe nanostripes observed by means of high-resolution Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. It is shown that above certain critical values of an external magnetic field the character of such long-range skyrmion interactions changes from attraction to repulsion. Experimentally measured equilibrium inter-skyrmion and skyrmion-edge distances as a function of the applied magnetic field shows quantitative agreement with the results of micromagnetic simulations. The important role of demagnetizing fields and the internal symmetry of three-dimensional magnetic skyrmions are discussed in detail.

  • Low Impact Thinking of the Spongy City Construction in Built-Up Areas from the Perspective of Sustainable Urban Design
  • 2016
  • In: International Low Impact Development Conference China 2016 : LID Applications in Sponge City Projects - LID Applications in Sponge City Projects. - Reston, VA : American Society of Civil Engineers. - 9780784481042 ; , s. 328-338
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Sponge city construction can improve cities’ ability to adapt to the environment change and the ability to cope with floods, and it can also prompt cities’ development to be more healthy and sustainable. However, the process itself of sponge city construction may also has impact on the environment especially in built-up areas, to reduce the impact, the rainwater landscape design needs to integrate sustainable thoughts as follows: (1) balancing earthwork on site. Borrowing the traditional Chinese concept of "dig lake and pile mountain", providing earthwork balance on site by adjusting the micro-topography. (2) Protecting trees and bushes on site. When introducing bio-retention ponds to the built-up area with new plants which will be drought-resistant and wet-resistant, perennial, and with low maintenance, the designers need to think about how to protect and rearrange the existing plants especially trees and bushes at the same time which are relatively stable and mature in green spaces of old town. (3) Recycling the existing paving materials. Impermeable paving material on sidewalk, square, pedestrian area, parking area, etc. will be replaced by permeable concrete, permeable bricks, gravel, other permeable materials, and waterway kerbs. These abandoned materials could be recycled on site, such as use of the old concrete slabs, bricks building short stone walls to divide space or seats for people to rest, and it will reduce a lot of construction waste and avoid the pollution of new material consummations to the environment. (4) Taking the opportunity of spongy city construction to improve urban non-motor vehicle traffic environment, raising bike lanes along roads outside blocks and small roads inside blocks with permeable asphalt to improve walking and biking environment in cities. (5) Making public open spaces such as squares and green spaces support more staying activities with the opportunity of introducing rain garden to these areas. This is a kind of sustainable urban design point of view. Following the principle of minimum energy and material consumption and reducing the impact of sponge city construction itself on the environment will avoid a new round of environmental problems and resource waste. It has important significance to the construction of ecological city.

  • On the Concept of Trust in Online Social Networks
  • 2011
  • In: Trustworthy Internet. - Milano : Springer. - 9788847018174 ; , s. 143-157
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Online Social Networks (OSNs), such as Facebook, Twitter, and Myspace, provide new and interesting ways to communicate, share, and meet on the Internet. On the one hand, these features have arguably made many of the OSNs quite popular among the general population but the growth of these networks has raised issues and concerns related to trust, privacy and security. On the other hand, some would argue that the true potential of OSNs has yet to be unleashed. The mainstream media have uncovered a rising number of potential and occurring problems, including: incomprehensible security settings, unlawful spreading of private or copyrighted information, the occurrence of threats and so on. We present a set of approaches designed to improve the trustworthiness of OSNs. Each approach is described and related to ongoing research projects and to views expressed about trust by surveyed OSN users. Finally, we present some interesting pointers to future work.

  • Effects of local compositional heterogeneity in mixed halide perovskites on blue electroluminescence
  • 2024
  • In: Matter. - 2590-2393. ; 7:3, s. 1054-1070
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Compositional heterogeneity is commonly observed in mixed bromide/iodide perovskite photoabsorbers, typically with minimal effects on charge carrier recombination and photovoltaic performance. Consistently, it has so far received very limited attention in bromide/chloride-mixed perovskites, which hold particular significance for blue light-emitting diodes. Here, we uncover that even a minor degree of localized halide heterogeneity leads to severe non-radiative losses in mixed bromide/chloride blue perovskite emitters, presenting a stark contrast to general observations in photovoltaics. We not only provide a visualization of the heterogeneity landscape spanning from micro-to sub-microscale but also identify that this issue mainly arises from the initially formed chloride-rich clusters during perovskite nucleation. Our work sheds light on a long-term neglected factor impeding the advancement of blue light-emitting diodes using mixed halide perovskites and provides a practical strategy to mitigate this issue.

  • Targeted lipidomics and inflammation response to six weeks of sprint interval training in male adolescents
  • 2023
  • In: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. - : MDPI. - 1661-7827 .- 1660-4601. ; 20:4
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Lipids play an important role in coordinating and regulating metabolic and inflammatoryprocesses. Sprint interval training (SIT) is widely used to improve sports performance and healthoutcomes, but the current understanding of SIT-induced lipid metabolism and the correspondingsystemic inflammatory status modification remains controversial and limited, especially in maleadolescents. To answer these questions, twelve untrained male adolescents were recruited andunderwent 6 weeks of SIT. The pre- and post-training testing included analyses of peak oxygenconsumption (VO2peak), biometric data (weight and body composition), serum biochemical pa-rameters (fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-densitylipoprotein cholesterol, triacylglycerol, testosterone, and cortisol), inflammatory markers, and tar-geted lipidomics. After the 6-week SIT, the serum C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-2,IL-4, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β significantlydecreased (p < 0.05), whereas IL-6 and IL-10/TNF-α significantly increased (p < 0.05). In addition, the targeted lipidomics revealed changes in 296 lipids, of which 33 changed significantly (p < 0.05,fold change > 1.2 or <1/1.2). The correlation analysis revealed that the changes in the inflammatorymarkers were closely correlated with the changes in some of the lipids, such as LPC, HexCer, andFFA. In conclusion, the 6-week SIT induced significant changes in the inflammatory markers andcirculating lipid composition, offering health benefits to the population.

  • Mustard seeds (Sinapis Alba Linn) attenuate azoxymethane-induced colon carcinogenesis
  • 2011
  • In: REDOX REPORT. - : MANEY PUBLISHING, STE 1C, JOSEPHS WELL, HANOVER WALK, LEEDS LS3 1AB, W YORKS, ENGLAND. - 1351-0002. ; 16:1, s. 38-44
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Mustard seeds (MS), which are consumed in considerable amounts by the Japanese people that, interestingly, have the longest life expectancy in the world, are known to contain a number of yet not fully defined but quite powerful anti-oxidants. A suspension of extracted MS was found to suppress oxidized-LDL-induced macrophage respiratory burst in vitro, to prevent growth, and to induce apoptotic death of SW480 cells (a human colon cancer cell line), while no such effects were found for normal 3T3 cells. A diet enriched with MS decreased plasma levels of the lipid peroxidation product malonaldehyde in mice exposed to the colon cancer-inducer azoxymethane (AOM). Such a diet also dose-dependently enhanced the activity of several anti-oxidant enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and GSH-peroxidase and, moreover, reduced AOM-mediated formation of colon adenomas by about 50%. Further studies are required to detail and explore the beneficial effects of MS and their rich content of powerful anti-oxidants.
