Validität und schriftliche Sprachkompetenz : Eine Studie zur Bewertung schriftlicher Leistungen im Fach Deutsch an schwedischen Schulen

- Validity is a fundamental aspect of quality within the field of testing and assessment. Despite this fact, little research has been conducted on the validity of written assessment in a Swedish educational context and even less regarding assessment in an additional foreign language. In particular, there is little work on teachers’ scoring and the relation between ratings of students’ performances in upper secondary education and the external reference levels of the CEFR, the widely used framework from Council of Europe.Against this background, the present study was designed with the aim of examining the validity of the assessment of students’ written language proficiency in German at different steps according to the Swedish school system. The focus is on (1) raters’ construct conceptualisation, (2) inter-rater consistency of the Swedish raters, and (3) the relationship between Swedish ratings and ratings at a B1 level of the CEFR. The student data comprise 60 texts written in L2 German by Swedish upper secondary school students in courses aiming for three different steps of the national curriculum. The essays were scored by (a) students’ own teachers, b) external Swedish raters using Swedish national performance standards and (c) external CEFR raters in terms of the B1 level of the CEFR. Analysis of scores and rater comments were based on qualitative and quantitative methods, for example qualitative data analysis (QDA) and descriptive, correlational and reliability statistics. The results were analysed in relation to theoretical concepts of validity and central validation frameworks. The findings show that raters pay attention to a wide range of aspects in students’ written proficiency, although, to some extent, different interpretations of how student texts should be evaluated in relation to the national performance standards and a tendency to comment more on certain aspects could be observed. Analyses of inter-rater consistency indicate that the ability of Swedish raters to rank students’ performances is satisfactory, but that there are challenges in reaching general agreement, especially for intermediate and higher scores. Additionally, the results suggest that a pass level of Tyska 5 at upper secondary school is roughly equivalent to a B1-level of the CEFR. Finally, the thesis highlights the importance of rater training and discussions about assessment as part of strengthening teachers’ professional assessment competence. By exploring validity from different perspectives, the study provides a more complete picture of learner written assessment in an additional foreign language in Sweden and contributes to a deepened conceptual understanding of validity aspects within a Swedish educational context.

The Narcissus Theme from Fin de Siècle to Psychoanalysis : Crisis of the Modern Self

- This dissertation is an intertextual-thematological investigation of the Narcissus theme at the turn of the century 1900. It focuses primarily on French-, German-, and English-language decadent and Symbolist literature from the 1890s and early 1900s, as well as on early sexology and psychoanalysis. The general claim of the dissertation is that the common denominator for the turn-of-the-century interest in Narcissus is the sense of a destabilized foundation of selfhood, expounded here as a crisis of the modern self.The first chapter explores Narcissus as a poetic symbol, primarily within the context of French Symbolism. Young Symbolist writers such as André Gide and Camille Mauclair develop Narcissus as a symbol of pure self-referentality which performs a poetic reconciliation of the contingency of individual and finite existence with an absolute ideality. This chapter further explores the way in which Narcissus was used a polemical figure by opponents of Symbolism, such as Saint-Georges de Bouhélier, and how the symbol was developed to investigate the articulation between contingent and foundational aspects of selfhood by the mature Paul Valéry.The second chapter focuses on decadent narrative representations of the theme in works by Oscar Wilde, Leopold Andrian and others. These treatments employ the generic contours of a Bildungsroman, but depict the process of Bildung as a failure where the self-knowledge projected as its goal is unattainable. They thereby thematize the inability of the young male subject to find a steady foundation for his sense of selfhood in a modern world marked by irony and disbelief.The third chapter focuses on the conceptualization of the Narcissus theme as narcissism. It begins by tracing the genesis of the concept particularly in the works of Havelock Ellis, Isidor Sadger, Otto Rank and Sigmund Freud. The investigation then focuses on the role narcissism comes to play in Freud’s theory and argues that it ties selfhood and subjectivity to biological causation, but that it also allows Freud to suggest a path of psychologically informed Bildung, leading to self-knowledge and subjective autonomy.

- 2012 wurde das Netzwerk Landeskunde Nord gegründet, dessen Ziel es ist, Forschung und Lehre zur Landeskunde des Deutschen als Fremdsprache, insbesondere in den nordischen und den baltischen Ländern voranzutreiben. Die Publikation knüpft an die bereits erschienenen Bände Landeskunde Nord, Perspektive Nord und Spektrum Nord an und bietet weitere Beiträge zur wissenschaftlichen Theoriebildung in Verbindung mit unterrichtspraktischen Reflexionen und Projektvorstellungen. Dabei werden u.a. Brücken zwischen den verschiedenen Ebenen der Bildungssysteme geschlagen. Die Beiträge nehmen international geführte Fachdiskussionen u.a. zu Erinnerungsorten, Linguistic Landscapes und zum kreativen Schreiben auf und haben auch deshalb über die nordischen und baltischen Länder hinaus Bedeutung.

- Unter dem Rahmenthema Emotionen fand am 15./16. April 2016 auf dem Campus Gotland der Universität Uppsala die 12. Arbeitstagung schwedischer Germanistinnen und Germanisten Text im Kontext statt. Der vorliegende Band versammelt ausgewählte Beiträge, die in ihrer Vielfalt ein aktuelles Bild der Forschungsansätze und -projekte der Germanistik in Schweden vermitteln. Das Spektrum der Beiträge reicht von der Digitalisierung von Stammbüchern aus fünf Jahrhunderten bis zur Analyse von Metonymien in den Medien, von Fragen des transkulturellen Erzählens bis zu neuen Formen der Literatur im Zeitalter der Digitalisierung. Eine Untersuchung des Zusammenhangs von metasprachlichem Wissen und Grammatikkenntnissen bei schwedischen Deutschschülern rundet die Publikation ab. Der Band belegt, dass der Begriff der Emotionen sich als geeigneter Ausgangspunkt für den Dialog von Literaturwissenschaft und Sprachwissenschaft erweist; als verbindende Elemente fungieren vor allem kulturwissenschaftliche Ansätze.

- Alfred Nobels Testament wohnt eine Dynamik inne, die alljährlich für internationale Kontroversen sorgt. Die Schwedische Akademie, die diese Auszeichnung verleiht, versucht seit Beginn ihrer Tätigkeit, die von Nobel festgelegten Richtlinien vor dem Hintergrund gegenwärtiger literarischer Strömungen bzw. Tendenzen auszulegen. Die vorliegende Untersuchung setzt sich mit dem Literaturnobelpreis und seinen deutschsprachigen Preisträgern der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts auseinander. Anhand von Archivmaterial (Nominierungen, Gutachten, offiziellen Schreiben und privaten Briefen) wird gezeigt, auf welch vielfältige Weise das Auswahlverfahren funktioniert. Die dabei gewonnenen Einblicke in die Abläufe machen die hinter den jeweiligen Entscheidungen stehenden auch auβerliterarischen Zusammenhänge deutlich.
