    • Temperature cycling of real electronic components was carried out in a systematic manner at two different temperature profiles and in a single-chamber Heraeus climate cabinet. The first temperature profile ranged between -55°C and 100°C and the second between 0°C and 100°C. Top-side SMD components (chip resistors and Ball Grid Arrays (BGA)) were soldered with Sn-3.8Ag-0.7Cu lead free solder paste. Crack initiation and propagation was analyzed after every 500 cycles for each temperature cycling profile. Totally, 6500 cycles were run at both temperature profiles. Finite element modeling (FEM) calculations, for the analysis of strain and stress of 1206 chip joints were used to corroborate the experimental work results, especially regarding the crack initiation sites. Cracks were firstly visible for the temperature cycling ranging between -55°C and 100°C. The cracks observed were also visibly smaller for the temperature profile ranging between 0°C and 100°C, concluding that crack initiation and propagation was slightly slower for this temperature profile. Cracks continued to propagate as a function of temperature cycles. The reason for this difference in crack initiation and propagation was also analyzed.

The first temperature profile ranged between 55 and 100 C and the second between 0 and 100 C. Hole mounted components and secondary side SMD components were wave soldered with an Sn–3.5Ag alloy. Joints of both dual in line(DIL) packages and ceramic chip capacitors were investigated. Crack initiation and propagation was analysed after every 500 cycles.In total, 6500 cycles were run at both temperature profiles and the observations from each profile were compared.For both kinds of components analysed, cracks were first visible for the temperature profile ranging between 55 and 100 C. For this temperature profile, and for DIL packages, cracks were visible already after 500 cycles, whereas for the other temperature profile, cracks initiated between 1000 and 1500 cycles. The cracks observed after 1500 cycles were visibly smaller for the temperature profile ranging between 0 and 100 C, concluding that crack initiation and propagation was slightly slower for this temperature profile. For the chip capacitors, cracks were first visible after 2000 cycles.

    • Temperature cycling of electronic components was carried out at two different temperature profiles, the first ranging between -55°C and 100°C (TC1) and the second between 0°C and 100°C (TC2). Totally, 7000 cycles were run at TC1 and 14500 cycles at TC2. The test board’s top-side components were surface mounted using Sn-3.8Ag-0.7Cu solder alloy, and bottom side SMD components were wave soldered with Sn-3.5Ag alloy. The solder joint degradation was investigated as a function of cycle number by means of shear strength measurements and cross-sectioning. The shear strength drop was correlated to both crack initiation time and propagation rate, and Microstructural changes. The effect of manufacturing process (reflow versus wave soldering) and component size (0805 versus 0603 components) on the shear strength were also investigated.For both reflow and wave soldered components, the harsher the test environment the faster and largest the decrease in shear strength. The shear force is higher for the 0805 components compared to the 0603. The effect of component size on the residual shear strength is higher for the testing condition TC1. TC1 also seems to have a higher effect on the residual shear strength compared to TC2. The main difference between wave soldered and reflow soldered components is that the shear strength is in average higher for the wave soldered components compared to the reflow soldered. For the reflow soldered components using SAC, the microstructure coarsens, especially the Ag3Sn intermetallic particles. Furthermore, this alloy shows an increase of the IMC layer (Cu-Ni-Sn) thickness, and the IMC layer growth is controlled by a diffusion mechanism. The IMC growth coefficient is for the SAC system tested at TC1 0.0231 μm/hr1/2 (0.00053μm/hr) and for TC2 0.0054 μm/hr1/2 (2.9*10-5μm/hr). The microstructural changes during thermal cycling are a result of both static and strain-enhanced aging. For the wave soldered components the microstructure also became coarser, however, the IMC layer (Ni3Sn4) thickness did not change.The IMC layer growth does not affect the shear strength for the test conditions applied in this work. The shear strength decrease observed in the present work as a result of thermal cycling is a result of both microstructural coarsening and crack propagation inside the solder joint.

    • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to assess the effect of different temperature cycling profiles on the reliability of lead-free 388 plastic ball grid array (PBGA) packages and to deeply understand crack initiation and propagation.Design/methodology/approach - Temperature cycling of Sn-3.8Ag-0.7Cu PBGA packages was carried out at two temperature profiles, the first ranging between - 55 degrees C and 100 degrees C (TC1) and the second between 0 degrees C and 100 degrees C (TC2). Crack initiation and propagation was analyzed periodically and totally 7,000 cycles were run for TO and 14,500 for TC2. Finite element modeling (FEM), for the analysis of strain and stress, was used to corroborate the experimental results.Findings - The paper finds that TC1 had a characteristic life of 5,415 cycles and TC2 of 14,094 cycles, resulting in an acceleration factor of 2.6 between both profiles. Cracks were first visible for TC1, after 2,500 cycles, and only after 4,000 cycles for TC2. The crack propagation rate was faster for TC1 compared to TC2, and faster at the package side compared to the substrate side. The difference in crack propagation rate between the package side and substrate side was much larger for TC1 compared to TC2. Cracks developed first at the package side, and were also larger compared to the substrate side. The Cu tracks on the substrate side affected the crack propagation sites and behaved as SMD. All cracks propagated through the solder and crack propagation was mainly intergranular. Crack propagation was very random and did not follow the distance to neutral point (DNP) theory. FEM corroborated the experimental results, showing both the same critical location of highest creep strain and the independence of DNP.Originality/value - Such extensive work on the reliability assessment of Pb-free 388 PBGA packages has never been performed. This work also corroborates the results from other studies showing the difference in behavior between Pb-free and Pb-containing alloys.

  • Beyond the global brain differences : intraindividual variability differences in 1q21.1 distal and 15q11.2 bp1-bp2 deletion carriers

    • Background: Carriers of the 1q21.1 distal and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 copy number variants exhibit regional and global brain differences compared with noncarriers. However, interpreting regional differences is challenging if a global difference drives the regional brain differences. Intraindividual variability measures can be used to test for regional differences beyond global differences in brain structure.Methods: Magnetic resonance imaging data were used to obtain regional brain values for 1q21.1 distal deletion (n = 30) and duplication (n = 27) and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 deletion (n = 170) and duplication (n = 243) carriers and matched noncarriers (n = 2350). Regional intra-deviation scores, i.e., the standardized difference between an individual's regional difference and global difference, were used to test for regional differences that diverge from the global difference.Results: For the 1q21.1 distal deletion carriers, cortical surface area for regions in the medial visual cortex, posterior cingulate, and temporal pole differed less and regions in the prefrontal and superior temporal cortex differed more than the global difference in cortical surface area. For the 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 deletion carriers, cortical thickness in regions in the medial visual cortex, auditory cortex, and temporal pole differed less and the prefrontal and somatosensory cortex differed more than the global difference in cortical thickness.Conclusions: We find evidence for regional effects beyond differences in global brain measures in 1q21.1 distal and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 copy number variants. The results provide new insight into brain profiling of the 1q21.1 distal and 15q11.2 BP1-BP2 copy number variants, with the potential to increase understanding of the mechanisms involved in altered neurodevelopment.

    • Age has a major effect on brain volume. However, the normative studies available are constrained by small sample sizes, restricted age coverage and significant methodological variability. These limitations introduce inconsistencies and may obscure or distort the lifespan trajectories of brain morphometry. In response, we capitalized on the resources of the Enhancing Neuroimaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIGMA) Consortium to examine age-related trajectories inferred from cross-sectional measures of the ventricles, the basal ganglia (caudate, putamen, pallidum, and nucleus accumbens), the thalamus, hippocampus and amygdala using magnetic resonance imaging data obtained from 18,605 individuals aged 3-90 years. All subcortical structure volumes were at their maximum value early in life. The volume of the basal ganglia showed a monotonic negative association with age thereafter; there was no significant association between age and the volumes of the thalamus, amygdala and the hippocampus (with some degree of decline in thalamus) until the sixth decade of life after which they also showed a steep negative association with age. The lateral ventricles showed continuous enlargement throughout the lifespan. Age was positively associated with inter-individual variability in the hippocampus and amygdala and the lateral ventricles. These results were robust to potential confounders and could be used to examine the functional significance of deviations from typical age-related morphometric patterns.

    • Delineating the association of age and cortical thickness in healthy individuals is critical given the association of cortical thickness with cognition and behavior. Previous research has shown that robust estimates of the association between age and brain morphometry require large-scale studies. In response, we used cross-sectional data from 17,075 individuals aged 3-90 years from the Enhancing Neuroimaging Genetics through Meta-Analysis (ENIGMA) Consortium to infer age-related changes in cortical thickness. We used fractional polynomial (FP) regression to quantify the association between age and cortical thickness, and we computed normalized growth centiles using the parametric Lambda, Mu, and Sigma method. Interindividual variability was estimated using meta-analysis and one-way analysis of variance. For most regions, their highest cortical thickness value was observed in childhood. Age and cortical thickness showed a negative association; the slope was steeper up to the third decade of life and more gradual thereafter; notable exceptions to this general pattern were entorhinal, temporopolar, and anterior cingulate cortices. Interindividual variability was largest in temporal and frontal regions across the lifespan. Age and its FP combinations explained up to 59% variance in cortical thickness. These results may form the basis of further investigation on normative deviation in cortical thickness and its significance for behavioral and cognitive outcomes.

    • A molecular beam scattering apparatus has been constructed for the study of surface chemiluminescence, i.e. the emission of light during a molecule-surface reaction. The apparatus consists of a beam forming stage designed for molecular and atomic chlorine, and a scattering chamber. The scattering chamber houses the sample, an alkali evaporation source, and a rotatable flange which holds the detectors; (i) the imaging optics of the photon detector, (ii) a mass spectrometer detector and (iii) a charged particle collector. The performance of the apparatus is demonstrated for a beam of chlorine molecules impinging on continuously evaporated or freshly evaporated potassium films. Intensity versus chlorine exposure and angular intensity distributions are presented for the K(4p ->4s) atomic line emission of the K+Cl$_2$ surface chemiluminescence spectrum.

  • Global change-driven effects on dissolved organic matter composition : Implications for food webs of northern lakes

    • Northern ecosystems are experiencing some of the most dramatic impacts of global change on Earth. Rising temperatures, hydrological intensification, changes in atmospheric acid deposition and associated acidification recovery, and changes in vegetative cover are resulting in fundamental changes in terrestrial-aquatic biogeochemical linkages. The effects of global change are readily observed in alterations in the supply of dissolved organic matter (DOM)-the messenger between terrestrial and lake ecosystems-with potentially profound effects on the structure and function of lakes. Northern terrestrial ecosystems contain substantial stores of organic matter and filter or funnel DOM, affecting the timing and magnitude of DOM delivery to surface waters. This terrestrial DOM is processed in streams, rivers, and lakes, ultimately shifting its composition, stoichiometry, and bioavailability. Here, we explore the potential consequences of these global change-driven effects for lake food webs at northern latitudes. Notably, we provide evidence that increased allochthonous DOM supply to lakes is overwhelming increased autochthonous DOM supply that potentially results from earlier ice-out and a longer growing season. Furthermore, we assess the potential implications of this shift for the nutritional quality of autotrophs in terms of their stoichiometry, fatty acid composition, toxin production, and methylmercury concentration, and therefore, contaminant transfer through the food web. We conclude that global change in northern regions leads not only to reduced primary productivity but also to nutritionally poorer lake food webs, with discernible consequences for the trophic web to fish and humans.

    • We are investigating the possibility of using laser photodetachment of negative atomic and molecular ions as an additional isobaric selection filter in accelerator mass spectrometry. The aim of this study is to find a possibility to further improve the detection limit for long-lived heavy radionuclides at AMS facilities. We will focus on the astrophysical relevant radionuclide 182Hf, which is one of the isotopes measured with the 3 MV tandem AMS facility VERA (Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator) at the University of Vienna. Laser-induced isobar suppression is also of importance for radioactive-beam facilities. The present detection limit for measuring the isotope ratio 182Hf/Hf at VERA is 1×10-11. The limiting factor is the strong background of the stable isobar 182W. Currently this background is suppressed using suitable molecular ions in the injection stage. Selective laser photodetachment of the negative ions at the injector can lead to an additional suppression of the interfering isobar. Test experiments have been carried out at the negative ion laser spectroscopy setup at Göteborg University. In a small ion beam apparatus pulsed tunable laser radiation is used to measure the photodetachment cross-section of different atomic and molecular negative ions. We will present studies of the photodetachment process for various tungsten and hafnium molecules with the aim to find a selective isobaric suppression scheme using laser photodetachment spectroscopy in combination with AMS.

    • This paper reports an experimental investigation of the electron impact detachment of C−4. We observe structure in the electron impact cross section for detaching a single electron from a C−4 cluster anion, which we attribute to the formation and decay of the C2−4 dianion. The system is energetically unstable and very rapidly decays via double autodetachment. The energy and width of the resonance were determined to be 8.8(5) eV and 1.4(5) eV, respectively, and the resonance lies 1.5(5) eV above the ground state of the neutral system. The experiment was conducted by merging monoenergetic electron and ion beams in the heavy ion storage ring CRYRING. The detachment channel was monitored by detecting neutral C4 fragments.

    • Absolute cross sections for single and double detachment from H- following electron impact have been measured over a range of collision energies from the thresholds to 170 eV. The measurements were made using a magnetic storage ring. The ions in the ring were merged with a monoenergetic electron beam and neutral and positively charged fragments were detected. We cover larger energy ranges than in many of the previous experiments, and this is the first time both single and double detachment have been measured simultaneously. This allows us to present accurate ratios between the single and double detachment cross sections. On the basis of these ratio measurements we discuss possible mechanisms leading to double detachment.

    • Ion beam purity is of crucial importance to many basic and applied studies in nuclear science. Selective photodetachment has been proposed to suppress unwanted species in negative ion beams while preserving the intensity of the species of interest. A highly efficient technique based on photodetachment in a gas-filled radio frequency quadrupole ion cooler has been demonstrated. In off-line experiments with stable ions, up to 104 times suppression of the isobar contaminants in a number of interesting radioactive negative ion beams has been demonstrated. For selected species, this technique promises new experimental possibilities in studies on exotic nuclei, accelerator mass spectrometry, and fundamental properties of negative atomic and molecular ions.

    • © 2020, Société Internationale de Chirurgie. Background: Major surgery is a term frequently used but poorly defined. The aim of the present study was to reach a consensus in the definition of major surgery within a panel of expert surgeons from the European Surgical Association (ESA). Methods: A 3-round Delphi process was performed. All ESA members were invited to participate in the expert panel. In round 1, experts were inquired by open- and closed-ended questions on potential criteria to define major surgery. Results were analyzed and presented back anonymously to the panel within next rounds. Closed-ended questions in round 2 and 3 were either binary or statements to be rated on a Likert scale ranging from 1 (strong disagreement) to 5 (strong agreement). Participants were sent 3 reminders at 2-week intervals for each round. 70% of agreement was considered to indicate consensus. Results: Out of 305 ESA members, 67 (22%) answered all the 3 rounds. Significant comorbidities were the only preoperative factor retained to define major surgery (78%). Vascular clampage or organ ischemia (92%), high intraoperative blood loss (90%), high noradrenalin requirements (77%), long operative time (73%) and perioperative blood transfusion (70%) were procedure-related factors that reached consensus. Regarding postoperative factors, systemic inflammatory response (76%) and the need for intensive or intermediate care (88%) reached consensus. Consequences of major surgery were high morbidity (>30% overall) and mortality (>2%). Conclusion: ESA experts defined major surgery according to extent and complexity of the procedure, its pathophysiological consequences and consecutive clinical outcomes.

    • The Ion Laser InterAction Setup (ILIAS) project at the University of Vienna aims at the exploration of negative ion beam filtering by selective laser photodetachment for applications in accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). A gas-filled radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) is used to decelerate and cool negative atomic and molecular ion beams with intensities of up to several-hundred nA, and overlap them collinearly with a continuous wave (cw) laser beam. Ion-laser interaction times ranging from 500 mu s to several ms allow for highly efficient, selective photodetachment depletion of disturbing ion species within these beams. The elemental selectivity of this technique is based on the differences in electron affinities, and therefore does not depend on relative differences in atomic numbers. It may therefore provide sufficient isobar suppression for new trace isotopes, which are not accessible with existing AMS techniques. The ILIAS RFQ cooler was characterized at a purpose-built test bench with respect to ion beam transmission, ion cooling capabilities and ion residence times as a function of injected ion current to assess its suitability for future AMS use. A Cu-63(-) test beam of 600 nA was photodetached with more than 99.999% efficiency with a 532 nm laser at 10.8 W power. At the same time, ions of interest having electron affinities higher than the photon energy passed the cooler unaffected. Total ion losses were thus found to be below 50% of the sputter source output. Finally, first photodetachment experiments in connection with Al-26 detection demonstrated selective isobar suppression of MgO- vs. AlO- by more than 4 orders of magnitude. Currently, the RFQ cooler is moved to a new injector beamline at the Vienna Environmental Research Accelerator (VERA) for first applications of this novel technique at a state-of-the-art AMS facility.     • We demonstrate that the technique of laser photodetachment spectroscopy on atomic negative ions can be used as a sensitivity enhancement tool in mass spectrometry, useful for suppressing both isotopic as well as molecular isobaric interferences. In the experiment a beam of negative ions and a laser beam are merged in a collinear geometry and the wavelength of the laser is tuned across the photodetachment threshold region. Due to the large differential Doppler shifts associated with the fast moving ions of different masses, it is possible to selectively detach ions of certain isotopes while leaving others unaffected. By choosing co-propagating laser and ion beams, the heavier isotopes of an element can be selectively detached, whereas counter propagating beams can be used to detach the lighter ones. In this paper we demonstrate the feasibility of the method in an experiment that was designed to selectively detach either 32S− or 34S− ions. The isotopic ratio of 34S/32S was enhanced by a factor of >50 over the natural value. This factor can be improved by using a laser that is better adapted to the measurement and by improving the vacuum conditions in order to further suppress the collisional background. The applicability of this technique to selectivity enhancement in measurements of the abundances of rare or ultra-rare isotopes is discussed.

    • In the process of creating sustainable heat and power production systems it is important to find alternative, renewable fuels that are carbon dioxide neutral. Preferably these fuels Should be domestic, thus diminishing the need for transportation. One option could be to Use existing residues from local agriculture and food production. Development of combustion methods suitable for such residues is presently being pursued by a number of companies. Because many biomass fuels have compositions that makes them inclined to cause ash sintering problems and emissions of acid gases, there may be it need for the use of additives to decrease such problems. The aim of this work was to examine the ash characteristics of some agricultural crops and residues and to find mixtures of fuels and additives that can form the basis for production of fuel pellets with minimal problems. The work is focused on biomass fuel pellets for small-scale grate-fired combustors. Three additives (limestone powder, kaolin, and sodium bicarbonate) were investigated regarding their effects oil the ash melting behavior. The results Show that calcium carbonate and kaolin both serve as good additives to prevent the formation of slag. The best antislagging effect was achieved when both additives were used. Sodium bicarbonate can be used as a sulfur binding additive, but this cannot be recommended since it increases the slag formation considerably. The conclusion is that combustion of agricultural crops and residues may be hampered by problems such its slag formation and ash fouling. However, through the use of suitable additives, the ash sintering characteristics can be improved significantly. This means that agricultural residues can be competitive fuels on the energy market in the future.
