  • CALIFA, a Dedicated Calorimeter for the R3B/FAIR
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Data Sheets. - : Elsevier BV. - 1095-9904 .- 0090-3752. ; 120, s. 99-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The R3B experiment (Reactions with Relativistic Radioactive Beams) at FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) is a versatile setup dedicated to the study of reactions induced by high-energy radioactive beams. It will provide kinematically complete measurements with high efficiency, acceptance and resolution, making possible a broad physics program with rare-isotopes. CALIFA (CALorimeter for In-Flight detection of gamma-rays and high energy charged pArticles), is a complex detector based on scintillation crystals, that will surround the target of the R3B experiment. CALIFA will act as a total absorption gamma-calorimeter and spectrometer, as well as identifier of charged particles from target residues. This versatility is its most challenging requirement, demanding a huge dynamic range, to cover from low energy gamma-rays up to 300 MeV protons. This fact, along with the high-energy of the beams determine the conceptual design of the detector, presented in this paper, together with the technical solutions proposed for its construction.

  • Search for beta-delayed proton emission from 11 Be
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-601X .- 1434-6001. ; 56:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We report on an attempt to reproduce the observation of β--delayed proton emission from 11Be through detection of the final state nucleus 10Be with accelerator mass spectrometry. Twelve samples were collected at the ISOLDE facility at CERN at different separator settings, allowing tests of different sources of contamination to be carried out. The observed amounts of 10Be per collected 11Be rule out several contamination sources, but do not agree internally. Formation of BeH molecular ions in the ion source may explain our data, in which case an upper limit of the βp branching ratio of 2.2 × 10 - 6 can be derived.

  • Be-11(beta p), a quasi-free neutron decay?
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 732, s. 305-308
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We have observed beta(-)-delayed proton emission from the neutron-rich nucleus Be-11 by analyzing a sample collected at the ISOLDE facility at CERN with accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS). With a branching ratio of (8.3 +/- 0.9). 10(-6) the strength of this decay mode, as measured by the B-GT-value, is unexpectedly high. The result is discussed within a simple single-particle model and could be interpreted as a quasi-free decay of the Be-11 halo neutron into a single-proton state.

  • Phoswich scintillator for proton and gamma radiation of high energy
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: AIP Conference Proceedings. - : AIP. - 1551-7616 .- 0094-243X. - 9780735409835 ; 1409, s. 141-144
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present here a Phoswich scintillator design to achieve both high resolution gamma ray detection, and good efficiency for high energy protons. There are recent developments of new high resolution scintillator materials. Especially the LaBr3(Ce) and LaCl3(Ce) crystals have very good energy resolution in the order of 3% for 662 keV gamma radiation. In addition, these materials exhibit a very good light output (63 and 32 photons/keV respectively). A demonstrator detector in the form of an Al cylinder of 24 mm diameter and a total length of 80 mm with 2 mm wall thickness, containing a LaBr3(Ce) crystal of 20 mm diameter and 30 mm length directly coupled to a LaCl3(Ce) crystal of 50 mm length, and closed with a glass window of 5 mm, was delivered by Saint Gobain. To the glass window a Hamamatsu R5380 Photomultiplier tube (PMT) was coupled using silicon optical grease. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

  • Multiparticle emission in the decay of Ar-31
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 89:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A multihit capacity setup was used to study the decay of the dripline nucleus Ar-31, produced at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. A spectroscopic analysis of the beta-delayed three-proton decay of Ar-31 is presented for the first time together with a quantitative analysis of the beta-delayed 2p gamma decay. A new method for determination of the spin of low-lying levels in the beta p daughter 30S using proton-proton angular correlations is presented and used to determine that the spin of the 5.2-MeV level is most likely 3(+) with 4(+) also possible. The half-life of Ar-31 is found to be 15.1(3) ms. An improved analysis of the Fermi beta strength including the beta 3p-decay mode gives a total measured branching ratio of 3.60(44)%, which is lower than the theoretical value found to be 4.24(43)%. Finally, a previously unidentified. transition from the isobaric analog state in the decay of Ar-33 has been found.

  • Relative proton and gamma widths of astrophysically important states in S-30 studied in the beta-delayed decay of Ar-31
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993. ; 87:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Resonances just above the proton threshold in S-30 affect the P-29(p, gamma)S-30 reaction under astrophysical conditions. The (p,gamma)-reaction rate is currently determined indirectly and depends on the properties of the relevant resonances. We present here a method for finding the ratio between the proton and gamma partial widths of resonances in S-30. The widths are determined from the beta 2p- and beta p gamma-decay of Ar-31, which is produced at the ISOLDE radioactive ion beam facility at the European research organization CERN. Experimental limits on the ratio between the proton and gamma partial widths for astrophysical relevant levels in S-30 have been found for the first time. A level at 4689.2(24) keV is identified in the gamma spectrum, and an upper limit on the Gamma(p)/ Gamma gamma ratio of 0.26 (95% C.L.) is found. In the two-proton spectrum two levels at 5227(3) keV and 5847(4) keV are identified. These levels were previously seen to gamma decay and upper limits on the Gamma(gamma)/Gamma(p) ratio of 0.5 and 9, respectively, (95% C.L.) are found, where the latter differs from previous calculations.

  • Sizeable beta-strength in Ar-31 (beta 3p) decay
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Physics Letters, Section B: Nuclear, Elementary Particle and High-Energy Physics. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693. ; 737, s. 383-387
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present for the first time precise spectroscopic information on the recently discovered decay mode beta-delayed 3p-emission. The detection of the 3p events gives an increased sensitivity to the high energy part of the Gamow-Teller strength distribution from the decay of Ar-31 revealing that as much as 30% of the strength resides in the beta 3p-decaymode. A simplified description of how the main decay modes evolve as the excitation energy increases in Cl-31 is provided.

  • Tl concentration and its variation in a CsI(Tl) crystal for the CALIFA detector
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002. ; 975
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • One of the factors that can contribute to the resolution of long, doped inorganic scintillators used for nuclear spectroscopy is the variation of the dopant concentration over the length the detector crystal. In this work an investigation of such potential variations in one of the CsI(Tl) scintillators used in the calorimeter, CALIFA, of the R3B experiment at FAIR, has been performed using particle induced X-ray emission. No statistically significant gradient in doping level was found along the long axis of the investigated sample crystal and the mean value of the Tl concentration was measured to be 0.0839(38)% by weight. This corresponds to a light output of 97.3−1.7 +1.3% relative to the maximum attainable light output according to previously published work. By taking the ±1σ bounds, the 3% statistical spread in the relative light output provides a good reference value of the minimum light-output non-uniformity observed for the CALIFA crystals. If the relative light output is estimated pointwise from a set of Tl concentration measurements a light-output non-uniformity of 4.6(2.4)% results. For a γ-ray energy of 662 keV the deduced variation in Tl concentration contributes with 0.48(6)% to the typical resolution of 7.74(6)% measured with a collimated source along the crystal main axis. The result is of interest for the characterization of the detector system performance and for realistic simulations of the light collection process in detector systems that are used for nuclear spectroscopy and calorimetry.

  • Beta-delayed proton emission from 21Mg
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-601X .- 1434-6001. ; 51:9, s. Art. no. 113-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Beta-delayed proton emission from 21Mg has been measured at ISOLDE, CERN, with a detection setup consisting of two charged-particle telescopes surrounding the decay point. Altogether 27 βp branches were measured with center-of-mass energies between 0.4–7.2 MeV. Seven new βp branches were observed. Beta-delayed protons were used to determine the half-life of 21Mg as 118.6 ± 0.5 ms. From a line shape fit of the βp branches we extract the widths, spins, and parities of the resonances of 21Na. An improved interpretation of the decay scheme in accordance with the results obtained in reaction studies is presented.

  • Effects of cryopreservation on semen quality and the expression of sperm membrane hexose transporters in the spermatozoa of Iberian pigs
  • 2007
  • Ingår i: Reproduction. - : BioScientifica. - 1470-1626 .- 1476-3990. ; 134:1, s. 111-121
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study evaluated the effects of cooling, freezing and thawing on the plasma membrane integrity, kinetics and expression of two sugar transporters glucose transporter-3 and -5 (GLUT-3 and GLUT-5) in spermatozoa from Iberian boars. Semen samples were collected twice weekly from eight young, fertile Iberian boars of the Entrepelado and Lampino breeds. The samples were suspended in a commercial extender and refrigerated to 17 degrees C for transport to the laboratory (step A), where they were further extended with a lactose-egg yolk-based extender and chilled to 5 degrees C (step B) prior to freezing in the presence of glycerol (3%). Spermatozoa were assessed for plasma membrane integrity and sperm motility at each of the steps, including post-thaw (step C). Aliquots were also prepared for immunocytochemical localisation of the sugar transporters (fixed and thin smears for transmission and scanning electron microscopy levels respectively) and for SDS-PAGE electrophoresis and subsequent western blotting, using the same antibodies (rabbit anti-GLUT-3 and anti-GLUT-5 polyclonal antibodies). The results showed lower percentages of progressively motile spermatozoa at step C in both breeds, while the percentage of live spermatozoa was significantly lower only in the Entrepelado breed. The results obtained from electron microscopy clearly showed that Iberian boar spermatozoa expressed the hexose transporters, GLUT-3 and GLUT-5. The pattern of expression, in terms of location and concentration, was characteristic in each case but, in the case of isoform GLUT-5, it remained constant during the different steps of freezing-thawing protocol. These results indicate that cryopreservation affects the status of sperm cells of Iberian boars by altering the distribution of some membrane receptors and decreasing the percentage values of parameters linked to sperm quality.

  • LaBr3(Ce):LaCl3(Ce) Phoswich with pulse shape analysis for high energy gamma-ray and proton identification
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research, Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0168-9002. ; 704:0, s. 19-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A novel Phoswich design based on new generation scintillator crystals is presented. The detector composed from a combination of a LaBr3(Ce) with a LaCl3(Ce) crystal in one cylinder coupled to a photo multiplier tube has been tested both for incident gamma rays in the range of 0.3–6 MeV, as well as for high energy protons in the range 120–180 MeV. The Phoswich assembly has not significantly deteriorated the energy resolution, which for 662 KeV gamma rays gives a resolution of 4.5%, while for high energy protons (Ep=180 MeV) an energy resolution of 1% was obtained. It is shown that the signals from the two crystals can be separated in an event by event based mode. Using direct digitizing of the detector pulse an off-line pulse-shape analysis was performed built either on a total to tail or total to pulse height method in order to fully identify the incoming radiation. Our aim with this R&D is to in the future build a detector which is able to detect with good efficiency and resolution over a wide energy range; 0.1–30 MeV gamma rays and 20–400 MeV protons. Monte Carlo simulations made in order to design the next prototype are presented.

  • The non-coding RNA BC1 regulates experience-dependent structural plasticity and learning
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Nature communications. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2041-1723. ; 8:1, s. 293-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The brain cytoplasmic (BC1) RNA is a non-coding RNA (ncRNA) involved in neuronal translational control. Absence of BC1 is associated with altered glutamatergic transmission and maladaptive behavior. Here, we show that pyramidal neurons in the barrel cortex of BC1 knock out (KO) mice display larger excitatory postsynaptic currents and increased spontaneous activity in vivo. Furthermore, BC1 KO mice have enlarged spine heads and postsynaptic densities and increased synaptic levels of glutamate receptors and PSD-95. Of note, BC1 KO mice show aberrant structural plasticity in response to whisker deprivation, impaired texture novel object recognition and altered social behavior. Thus, our study highlights a role for BC1 RNA in experience-dependent plasticity and learning in the mammalian adult neocortex, and provides insight into the function of brain ncRNAs regulating synaptic transmission, plasticity and behavior, with potential relevance in the context of intellectual disabilities and psychiatric disorders.

  • Genotype-guided dosing of coumarin derivatives : the European pharmacogenetics of anticoagulant therapy (EU-PACT) trial design
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Pharmacogenomics (London). - : Future Medicine Ltd. - 1462-2416 .- 1744-8042. ; 10:10, s. 1687-1695
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The narrow therapeutic range and wide interpatient variability in dose requirement make anticoagulation response to coumarin derivatives unpredictable. As a result, patients require frequent monitoring to avert adverse effects and maintain therapeutic efficacy. Polymorphisms in VKORC1 and CYP2C9 jointly account for about 40% of the interindividual variability in dose requirements. To date, several pharmacogenetic-guided dosing algorithms for coumarin derivatives, predominately for warfarin, have been developed. However, the potential benefit of these dosing algorithms in terms of their safety and clinical utility has not been adequately investigated in randomized settings. The European Pharmacogenetics of Anticoagulant Therapy (EU-PACT) trial will assess, in a single-blinded and randomized controlled trial with a follow-up period of 3 months, the safety and clinical utility of genotype-guided dosing in daily practice for the three main coumarin derivatives used in Europe. The primary outcome measure is the percentage time in the therapeutic range for international normalized ratio. This report describes the design and protocol for the trial.

  • A systematic review of cost-effectiveness analyses of pharmacogenetic-guided dosing in treatment with coumarin derivatives.
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Pharmacogenomics (London). - : Future Medicine Ltd. - 1462-2416 .- 1744-8042. ; 11:7, s. 989-1002
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Anticoagulant therapy with coumarin derivatives is often sub- or supra-therapeutic, resulting in an increased risk of thromboembolic events or hemorrhage, respectively. Pharmacogenetic-guided dosing has been proposed as an effective way of reducing bleeding rates. Clinical trials to confirm the safety, efficacy and effectiveness of this strategy are ongoing, but in addition, it is also necessary to consider the cost-effectiveness of this strategy. This article describes the findings of a systematic review of published cost-effectiveness analyses of pharmacogenetic-guided dosing of coumarin derivatives. Similarities and differences in the approaches used were examined and the quality of the analyses was assessed. The results of the analyses are not sufficient to determine whether or not pharmacogenetic-guided dosing of coumarins is cost effective. More reliable cost-effectiveness estimates need to become available before it is possible to recommend whether or not this strategy should be applied in clinical practice.
