  • Nuclear astrophysics with radioactive ions at FAIR
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physics: Conference Series. - : IOP Publishing. - 1742-6588 .- 1742-6596. ; 665:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes.

  • The Changing Face of Arctic Snow Cover: A Synthesis of Observed and Projected Changes
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Ambio: a Journal of Human Environment. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447. ; 40, s. 17-31
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Analysis of in situ and satellite data shows evidence of different regional snow cover responses to the widespread warming and increasing winter precipitation that has characterized the Arctic climate for the past 40-50 years. The largest and most rapid decreases in snow water equivalent (SWE) and snow cover duration (SCD) are observed over maritime regions of the Arctic with the highest precipitation amounts. There is also evidence of marked differences in the response of snow cover between the North American and Eurasian sectors of the Arctic, with the North American sector exhibiting decreases in snow cover and snow depth over the entire period of available in situ observations from around 1950, while widespread decreases in snow cover are not apparent over Eurasia until after around 1980. However, snow depths are increasing in many regions of Eurasia. Warming and more frequent winter thaws are contributing to changes in snow pack structure with important implications for land use and provision of ecosystem services. Projected changes in snow cover from Global Climate Models for the 2050 period indicate increases in maximum SWE of up to 15% over much of the Arctic, with the largest increases (15-30%) over the Siberian sector. In contrast, SCD is projected to decrease by about 10-20% over much of the Arctic, with the smallest decreases over Siberia (<10%) and the largest decreases over Alaska and northern Scandinavia (30-40%) by 2050. These projected changes will have far-reaching consequences for the climate system, human activities, hydrology, and ecology.

  • Isotopic cross sections of fragmentation residues produced by light projectiles on carbon near
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C. - 2469-9993 .- 2469-9985. ; 105:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We measured 135 cross sections of residual nuclei produced in fragmentation reactions of C12, N14, and O13−16,20,22 projectiles impinging on a carbon target at kinetic energies of near 400A MeV, most of them for the first time, with the RB3/LAND setup at the GSI facility in Darmstadt (Germany). The use of this state-of-the-art experimental setup in combination with the inverse kinematics technique gave the full identification in atomic and mass numbers of fragmentation residues with a high precision. The cross sections of these residues were determined with uncertainties below 20% for most of the cases. These data are compared to other previous measurements with stable isotopes and are also used to benchmark different model calculations.

  • Multiple Effects of Changes in Arctic Snow Cover
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Ambio: a Journal of Human Environment. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 40, s. 32-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Snow cover plays a major role in the climate, hydrological and ecological systems of the Arctic and other regions through its influence on the surface energy balance (e.g. reflectivity), water balance (e.g. water storage and release), thermal regimes (e.g. insulation), vegetation and trace gas fluxes. Feedbacks to the climate system have global consequences. The livelihoods and well-being of Arctic residents and many services for the wider population depend on snow conditions so changes have important consequences. Already, changing snow conditions, particularly reduced summer soil moisture, winter thaw events and rain-on-snow conditions have negatively affected commercial forestry, reindeer herding, some wild animal populations and vegetation. Reductions in snow cover are also adversely impacting indigenous peoples' access to traditional foods with negative impacts on human health and well-being. However, there are likely to be some benefits from a changing Arctic snow regime such as more even run-off from melting snow that favours hydropower operations.

  • Coulomb dissociation of 20,21 N
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993 .- 0556-2813. ; 93:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role in the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on N20,21 are reported. Relativistic N20,21 ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the N19(n,γ)N20 and N20(n,γ)N21 excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. The N19(n,γ)N20 rate is up to a factor of 5 higher at T

  • Beyond the neutron drip line: The unbound oxygen isotopes O-25 and O-26
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C - Nuclear Physics. - 2469-9985 .- 2469-9993 .- 0556-2813. ; 88:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The very neutron-rich oxygen isotopes O-25 and O-26 are investigated experimentally and theoretically. The unbound states are populated in an experiment performed at the R3B-LAND setup at GSI via proton-knockout reactions from F-26 and F-27 at relativistic energies around 442 and 414 MeV/nucleon, respectively. From the kinematically complete measurement of the decay into O-24 plus one or two neutrons, the O-25 ground-state energy and width are determined, and upper limits for the O-26 ground-state energy and lifetime are extracted. In addition, the results provide indications for an excited state in O-26 at around 4 MeV. The experimental findings are compared to theoretical shell-model calculations based on chiral two- and three-nucleon (3N) forces, including for the first time residual 3N forces, which are shown to be amplified as valence neutrons are added.

  • Time-Resolved Measurement of Interatomic Coulombic Decay Induced by Two-Photon Double Excitation of Ne2
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007. ; 118:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The hitherto unexplored two-photon doubly excited states [Ne∗(2p-13s)]2 were experimentally identified using the seeded, fully coherent, intense extreme ultraviolet free-electron laser FERMI. These states undergo ultrafast interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD), which predominantly produces singly ionized dimers. In order to obtain the rate of ICD, the resulting yield of Ne2+ ions was recorded as a function of delay between the extreme ultraviolet pump and UV probe laser pulses. The extracted lifetimes of the long-lived doubly excited states, 390(-130/+450) fs, and of the short-lived ones, less than 150 fs, are in good agreement with ab initio quantum mechanical calculations.

  • Analysis of charged particle emission sources and coalescence in E/A=61 (MeVAr)-Ar-36+Al-27, Sn-112 and Sn-124 collisions
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Physics, Section A. - : Elsevier BV. - 0375-9474. ; 736:1-2, s. 22-38
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Single-particle kinetic energy spectra and two-particle small angle correlations of protons (p), deuterons (d) and tritons (t) have been measured simultaneously in 61 A MeV Ar-36 + Al-27, Sn-112 and Sn-124 collisions. Characteristics of the emission sources have been derived from a "source identification plot" (beta(source)-E-CM plot), constructed from the single-particle invariant spectra, and compared to the complementary results from two-particle correlation functions. Furthermore, the source identification plot has been used to determine the conditions when the coalescence mechanism can be applied for composite particles. In our data, this is the case only for the Ar + Al reaction, where p, d and t are found to originate from a common source of emission (from the overlap region between target and projectile). In this case, the coalescence model parameter, (p) over tilde (0)-the radius of the complex particle emission source in momentum space, has been analyzed.

  • Calibration of a neutron time-of-flight multidetector system for an intensity interferometry experiment
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002. ; 516:2-3, s. 492-501
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We present the details of an experiment on light particle interferometry. In particular, we focus on a time-of-flight technique which uses a cyclotron RF signal as a start and a liquid scintillator time signal as a stop, to measure neutron energy in the range of En approximate to 1.8-150 MeV. This dynamic range (up to 300 ns) is much larger than the beam bunch separation (54 ns) of the AGOR cyclotron (KVI). However, the problem of a short burst period is overcome by using the time information obtained from a fast projectile fragment phoswich detector. The complete analysis procedure to extract the final neutron kinetic energy spectra, is discussed. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Isospin effects on two-particle correlation functions in E/A=61 MeV Ar-36+Sn-112,Sn-124 reactions
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Physical Review C (Nuclear Physics). - 0556-2813. ; 69:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Small-angle, two-particle correlation functions have been measured for Ar-36+Sn-112,Sn-124 collisions at E/A=61 MeV. Total momentum gated neutron-proton (np) and proton-proton (pp) correlations are stronger for the Sn-124 target. Some of the correlation functions for particle pairs involving deuterons or tritons (nd, pt, and nt) also show a dependence on the isospin of the emitting source.

  • The Lund-York-Cologne Calorimeter (LYCCA): Concept, Design and Prototype Developments for a FAIR-NUSTAR Detector System to Discriminate Relativistic Heavy-ion Reaction Products
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Nuclear Instruments & Methods in Physics Research. Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors, and Associated Equipment. - : Elsevier BV. - 0167-5087 .- 0168-9002. ; 723, s. 55-66
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept, design and prototype developments for the Lund-York-Cologne CAlorimeter (LYCCA) is presented. LYCCA is a modular device for the NUclear STructure, Astrophysics and Reactions (NUSTAR) science pillar of the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) at Darmstadt, Germany. LYCCA is designed to discriminate heavy ions produced in nuclear reactions induced by relativistic radioactive ion beams. Measurements of energy loss, total energy, and time-of-flight allow the derivation of proton number, Z, and mass number, A, of the reaction products. LYCCA-inherent tracking of the flight paths of the reaction products enables coincident High-resolution in-beam gamma-ray SPECtroscopy (HISPEC) of atomic nuclei far from the line of beta-stability. • Transferase and hydrolytic activities of the laminarinase from rhodothermus marinus and its M133A, M133C, and M133W mutants
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Glycoconjugate Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0282-0080 .- 1573-4986. ; 23:08-jul, s. 501-511
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Comparative studies of the transglycosylation and hydrolytic activities have been performed on the Rhodothermus marinus beta-1,3-glucanase (laminarinase) and its M133A, M133C, and M133W mutants. The M133C mutant demonstrated near 20% greater rate of transglycosylation activity in comparison with the M133A and M133W mutants that was measured by NMR quantitation of nascent beta(1-4) and beta(1-6) linkages. To obtain kinetic probes for the wild-type enzyme and Met-133 mutants, p-nitrophenyl beta-laminarin oligosaccharides of degree of polymerisation 2-8 were synthesized enzymatically. Catalytic efficiency values, k (cat)/K (m), of the laminarinase catalysed hydrolysis of these oligosaccharides suggested possibility of four negative and at least three positive binding subsites in the active site. Comparison of action patterns of the wild-type and M133C mutant in the hydrolysis of the p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-oligosac- charides indicated that the increased transglycosylation activity of the M133C mutant did not result from altered subsite affinities. The stereospecificity of the transglycosylation reaction also was unchanged in all mutants; the major transglycosylation products in hydrolysis of p-nitrophenyl laminaribioside were beta-glucopyranosyl-beta-1,3-D-glucopy- ranosyl-beta-1,3-D-glucopyranose and beta-glucopyranosyl-beta-1, 3-D-glucopyranosyl-beta-1,3-D-glucpyranosyl-beta-1,3-D- glucopyranoxside.
