    • A feasibility study has been performed in order to investigate the performance of the HADES detector to measure the electromagnetic decays of the hyperon resonances Sigma(1385)(0), Lambda(1405) and Lambda(1520) as well as the production of double strange baryon systems Xi(-) and Lambda Lambda in p + p reactions at a beam kinetic energy of 4.5GeV. The existing HADES detector will be upgraded by a new Forward Detector, which extends the detector acceptance into a range of polar angles that plays a crucial role for these investigations. The analysis of each channel is preceded by a consideration of the production cross-sections. Afterwards the expected signal count rates using a target consisting of either liquid hydrogen or polyethylene are summarized.

  • High-spin rotational bands in I-123

    • High-spin states in I-123 were populated in the reaction Se-80(Ca-48,p4n)I-123 at a beam energy of 207 MeV and gamma-ray coincidence events were measured using the Gammasphere spectrometer. Three weakly populated, high-spin rotational bands have been discovered with characteristics similar to those of the long collective bands recently observed in other nuclei of this mass region.   • Low- And medium-spin negative-parity bands in the Os 187 nucleus

    • Low- and medium-spin negative-parity bands of Os187 have been studied using the AFRican Omnipurpose Detector for Innovative Techniques and Experiments (AFRODITE) array, following the W186(He4,3n)Os187 reaction at a beam energy of 37 MeV. In the current work, all the previously known bands have been significantly extended and three new bands have been added to the level scheme. The angular distribution ratio (RAD) and polarization measurements have been used to assign spin and parity to the observed new levels. The configurations of some of the bands have been modified. The observed bands are interpreted within the cranked shell model (CSM) and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky-Bogoliubov (CNSB) formalism. Comparison with experimental data shows good agreements. Systematic comparison with the neighboring Os185 isotope is also discussed.

  • Highly deformed band structures due to core excitations in Xe 123

    • High-spin states in Xe123 were populated in the Se80(Ca48, 5n)Xe123 reaction at a beam energy of 207 MeV. γ-ray coincidence events were recorded with the Gammasphere spectrometer. Four new high-spin bands have been discovered in this nucleus. The bands are compared with those calculated within the framework of cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky-Bogoliubov models. It is concluded that the configurations of the bands involve two-proton excitations across the Z=50 as well as excitation of neutrons across the N=82 shell gaps resulting in a large deformation, 2≈0.30 and γ≈5°C.

  • Structure changes in Er-160 from low to ultrahigh spin

    • A spectroscopic investigation of the gamma decays from excited states in Er-160 has been performed in order to study the changing structural properties exhibited from low spin up toward ultrahigh spin (I similar to 60 h). The nucleus Er-160 was populated by the reaction Cd-116(Ca-48,4n gamma) at a beam energy of 215 MeV, and resulting gamma decays were studied using the Gammasphere spectrometer. New rotational structures and extensions to existing bands were observed, revealing a diverse range of quasiparticle configurations, which are discussed in terms of the cranked shell model. At spins around 50h there is evidence for oblate states close to the yrast line. Three rotational bands that have the characteristics of strongly deformed triaxial structures are observed, marking a return to collectivity at even higher spin. The high-spin data are interpreted within the framework of cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations.

  • High spin states of the normally deformed bands of y 83

    • Level lifetime and side-feeding time measurements were performed on the excited states of the normally deformed bands of Y83 using the Doppler-shift attenuation method (DSAM). The high spin states of Y83 were populated using the fusion-evaporation reaction Ni58(S32,α3p)Y83 at 135 MeV. Twenty-two level lifetime and side-feeding times were determined in most of the cases by comparing the line shapes gated with transitions above and below the state under study. Quadrupole moments determined from lifetime measurements are in the range 1.1-3.1 eb, and are similar to the ones found for some of the neighboring nuclei. The measured side-feeding times were compared with predictions made by simulations carried out with the Gammapace code. The results were in agreement with the experimental values by assuming reduced transition probabilities of the collective transitions in the continuum region, lying in the range 40-80 W.u. The discrete excited states were studied with paired cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky-Bogoliubov (CNSB) calculations carried out for the first time for an A≈80 nucleus. Unpaired cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (CNS) calculations were used to specify configurations and study the band crossings. The measured |Qt| values show a general agreement with CNSB calculations. Cranked shell model analysis evinced that the smallest quadrupole moment appears at the sharpest band crossing of the bands studied and CNSB calculations show an increase of the deformation thereinafter.

  • Extensive Gamma-ray Spectroscopy of Band Structures in 62Zn

    • An experimental study of the Zn-62 nucleus has been performed by combining the data sets from four fusion-evaporation reaction experiments. Apart from the previously published data, the present results include ten new rotational band structures and two more superdeformed bands. The Gammasphere Ge-detector array in conjunction with the 4 pi charged-particle detector array Microball allowed for the detection of gamma rays in coincidence with evaporated light particles. The deduced level scheme includes some 260 excited states, which are connected with more than 450 gamma-ray transitions. Spins and parities of the excited states have been determined via directional correlations of. rays emitted from oriented states. The experimental characteristics of the rotational bands are analyzed and compared with results from cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations. The present analysis, combined with available experimental results in the A similar to 60 mass region, can be used to improve the current set of Nilsson parameters in the N = 3 and N = 4 oscillator shells.

    • We have employed the cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky and cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky-Bogoliubov methods to predict the structure of the observed high-spin rotational bands in Nd137. Our study is motivated in particular by a previous observation of a rotational band more than 4 MeV above yrast. We discuss both possible interpretations of this band and in this connection also the HD band and the terminating states expected around I=45.

  • Interpretation of the large-deformation high-spin bands in select A=158-168 nuclei

    • The high-spin rotational bands in Hf-168 and the triaxial bands in Lu nuclei are analyzed using the configuration-constrained cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (CNS) model. Special attention is given to the up-sloping extruder orbitals. The relative alignment between the bands which appear to correspond to triaxial shape is also considered, including the yrast ultrahigh-spin band in Er-158. This comparison suggests that the latter band is formed from rotation around the intermediate axis. In addition, the standard approximations of the CNS approach are investigated, indicating that the errors which are introduced by the neglect of off-shell matrix elements and the cutoff at nine oscillator shells (N-max = 8) are essentially negligible compared to other uncertainties. On the other hand, the full inclusion of the hexadecapole degree of freedom is more significant; for example it leads to a decrease of the total energy of similar to 500 keV in the triaxial superdeformed (TSD) region of Hf-168.

  • Isomeric states in neutron-rich Z=76 isotopes and N=116 isotones

    • We have employed both unpaired (cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky) and paired (cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky-Bogoliubov) cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky calculations to explore the properties of observed and potential isomers within the shape-transitional osmium (Z=76) isotopes and N=116 isotones. Our analyses reveal the prevalence of multiquasiparticle prolate and broken-pair triaxial structures in even-even osmium isotopes (N=112-118) and N=116 isotones (Z=72-80). In addition, our exploration of N=116 isotones identifies potential isomeric states, systematically, including noncollective 10- and collective 12+ states, constructed upon specific neutron configurations.

    • Selected high-spin bands in A = 120-170 nuclei are interpreted within the configuration-constrained Cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky formalism with pairing neglected (CNS) and with pairing included (CNSB). A few bands in Lu/Hf nuclei which have been interpreted as formed at large triaxial deformation are reinterpreted as rotational bands at small deformation approaching termination. The differences between the linked high-spin rotational bands in Xe-125,Xe-126 are explored, suggesting that the bands in Xe-126 terminate high above yrast at close to spherical shape.

  • Positive Effects of Nature on Cognitive Performance Across Multiple Experiments : Test Order but Not Affect Modulates the Cognitive Effects

    • Interactions with natural environments and nature-related stimuli have been found to be beneficial to cognitive performance, in particular on executive cognitive tasks with high demands on directed attention processes. However, results vary across different studies. The aim of the present paper was to evaluate the effects of nature vs. urban environments on cognitive performance across all of our published and new/unpublished studies testing the effects of different interactions with nature vs. urban/built control environments, on an executive-functioning test with high demands on directed attention-the backwards digit span (BDS) task. Specific aims in this study were to: (1) evaluate the effect of nature vs. urban environment interactions on BDS across different exposure types (e.g., real-world vs. artificial environments/stimuli); (2) disentangle the effects of testing order (i.e., effects caused by the order in which experimental conditions are administered) from the effects of the environment interactions, and (3) test the (mediating) role of affective changes on BDS performance. To this end, data from 13 experiments are presented, and pooled data-analyses are performed. Results from the pooled data-analyses (N = 528 participants) showed significant time-by-environment interactions with beneficial effects of nature compared to urban environments on BDS performance. There were also clear interactions with the order in which environment conditions were tested. Specifically, there were practice effects across environment conditions in first sessions. Importantly, after parceling out initial practice effects, the positive effects of nature compared to urban interactions on BDS performance were magnified. Changes in positive or negative affect did not mediate the beneficial effects of nature on BDS performance. These results are discussed in relation to the findings of other studies identified in the literature. Uncontrolled and confounding order effects (i.e., effects due to the order of experimental conditions, rather than the treatment conditions) may explain some of the inconsistent findings across studies the literature on nature effects on cognitive performance. In all, these results highlight the robustness of the effects of natural environments on cognition, particularly when confounding order effects have been considered, and provide a more nuanced account of when a nature intervention will be most effective.
