    • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were synthesized on liquid flame sprayed (LFS) powder substrate of iron oxide doped Al2O3-ZrO2. Iron oxide doped Al2O3-ZrO2 nanopowder was produced by injecting the liquid precursor of aluminium-isopropoxide, zirconium-n-propoxide, ferrocene and p-xylene into a high temperature (similar to 3000 K) flame. The precursor solution was atomized by high-velocity H-2 flow and injected into the flame where nanopartides were formed. The collected sample was used as a substrate material for the synthesis of CNTs. The CNTs were formed on the surfaces of the substrate powder by catalyzed decomposition of CH4. The particle morphology, size, phase composition and the nature of CNTs were determined by TEM, FE-SEM, XRD, XPS, Mossbauer and Raman spectroscopy. The collected powder consists of micron-sized agglomerates with nanosized primary particles. Tetragonal zirconia was detected while alumina was amorphous.     • Digital anamorphosis is used to define a distorted image of health and care that may be viewed correctly using digital tools and strategies. MASK digital anamorphosis represents the process used by MASK to develop the digital transformation of health and care in rhinitis. It strengthens the ARIA change management strategy in the prevention and management of airway disease. The MASK strategy is based on validated digital tools. Using the MASK digital tool and the CARAT online enhanced clinical framework, solutions for practical steps of digital enhancement of care are proposed.

    • Hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen are common unintentional impurities of Al(x)Ga(1−x)N crystals. This impurity structure and its interplay with Mg impurities in Al(x)Ga(1−x)N semiconductors are relevant to develop the p-type nitride crystals for various devices (e.g, LEDs, transistors, gas sensors) but are still unclear. Here we have investigated Mg-doped Al0.5Ga0.5N before and after postgrowth annealing with valence-band and core-level photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and resistivity measurements. First, it is found that a surface part of the Al0.5Ga0.5N crystal is surprisingly inert with air and stable against air exposure-induced changes. Thus, the relatively surface-sensitive photoelectron spectroscopy measurements reflect in this case also the bulk crystal characteristics. The measurements reveal the presence of deep states up to 1 eV above valence-band maximum before and after the annealing and that oxygen and carbon occupy N lattice sites (i.e., ON and CN). The model where CN-induced acceptor states in the band gap participate in the blue emission (photoluminescence) is supported. Furthermore, the presented Mg 2p core-level spectra demonstrate that part of Mg atoms forms direct bond(s) with oxygen in the bulklike structure of Al0.5Ga0.5N and that the chemical environment of Mg atoms is much richer than was expected previously.

  • Research Priorities in Pediatric Asthma : Results of a Global Survey of Multiple Stakeholder Groups by the Pediatric Asthma in Real Life (PeARL) Think Tank

    • Background: Pediatric asthma remains a public health challenge with enormous impact worldwide. Objective: The aim of this study was to identify and prioritize unmet clinical needs in pediatric asthma, which could be used to guide future research and policy activities. Methods: We first identified unmet needs through an open-question survey administered to international experts in pediatric asthma who were members of the Pediatric Asthma in Real Life Think Tank. Prioritization of topics was then achieved through a second, extensive survey with global reach, of multiple stakeholders (leading experts, researchers, clinicians, patients, policy makers, and the pharmaceutical industry). Differences across responder groups were compared. Results: A total of 57 unmet clinical need topics identified by international experts were prioritized by 412 participants from 5 continents and 60 countries. Prevention of disease progression and prediction of future risk, including persistence into adulthood, emerged as the most urgent research questions. Stratified care, based on biomarkers, clinical phenotypes, the children's age, and demographics were also highly rated. The identification of minimum diagnostic criteria in different age groups, cultural perceptions of asthma, and best treatment by age group were priorities for responders from low-middle-income countries. There was good agreement across different stakeholder groups in all domains with some notable exceptions that highlight the importance of involving the whole range of stakeholders in formulation of recommendations. Conclusions: Different stakeholders agree in the majority of research and strategic (eg, prevention, personalized approach) priorities for pediatric asthma. Stakeholder diversity is crucial for highlighting divergent issues that future guidelines should consider.

    • Food allergy affects approximately 2-4% of children and adults. This guideline provides recommendations for managing food allergy from the Global Allergy and Asthma European Network (GA2LEN). A multidisciplinary international Task Force developed the guideline using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE) II framework and the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) approach. We reviewed the latest available evidence as of April 2021 (161 studies) and created recommendations by balancing benefits, harms, feasibility, and patient and clinician experiences. We suggest that people diagnosed with food allergy avoid triggering allergens (low certainty evidence). We suggest that infants with cow's milk allergy who need a breastmilk alternative use either hypoallergenic extensively hydrolyzed cow's milk formula or an amino acid-based formula (moderate certainty). For selected children with peanut allergy, we recommend oral immunotherapy (high certainty), though epicutaneous immunotherapy might be considered depending on individual preferences and availability (moderate certainty). We suggest considering oral immunotherapy for children with persistent severe hen's egg or cow's milk allergy (moderate certainty). There are significant gaps in evidence about safety and effectiveness of the various strategies. Research is needed to determine the best approaches to education, how to predict the risk of severe reactions, whether immunotherapy is cost-effective and whether biological therapies are effective alone or combined with allergen immunotherapy.

    • Synthetic hackmanites, Na8Al6Si6O24(Cl,S)(2), showing efficient purple tenebrescence and blue/white persistent luminescence were studied using different spectroscopic techniques to obtain a quantified view on the storage and release of optical energy in these materials. The persistent luminescence emitter was identified as impurity Ti3+ originating from the precursor materials used in the synthesis, and the energy storage for persistent luminescence was postulated to take place in oxygen vacancies within the aluminosilicate framework. Tenebrescence, on the other hand, was observed to function within the Na-4(Cl,S) entities located in the cavities of the aluminosilicate framework. The mechanism of persistent luminescence and tenebrescence in hackmanite is presented for the first time.

    • Extended exposure to sunlight or artificial UV sources is a major cause of serious skin and eye diseases such as cancer. There is thus a great need for convenient materials for the easy monitoring of UV doses. While organic photochromic molecules are tunable for responses under different wavelengths of UV radiation, they suffer from rather poor durability because the color changes involve drastic changes in molecular structure. Inorganic materials, on the other hand, are durable, but they have lacked tunability. Here, by combining computational and empirical data, we confirm the mechanism of coloration in the hackmanites, nature-based materials, and introduce a new technique called thermotenebrescence. With knowledge of the mechanism, we show that we can control and thus tune the energy of electronic states of synthetic hackmanites (Na,M)(8)Al6Si6O24(Cl,S)(2) so that their body color is sensitive to the solar UV index as well as UVA, UVB or UVC radiation levels. Finally, we demonstrate that it is possible to use images taken with an inexpensive cell phone to quantify the radiation dose or UV index. The hackmanite materials thus show great potential for use in portable healthcare both in everyday life and in laboratories.

    • Urban living in built environments, combined with the use of processed water and food, may not provide the microbial stimulation necessary for a balanced development of immune function. Many chronic inflammatory disorders, including allergic, autoimmune, metabolic, and even some behavioural disorders, are linked to alteration in the human commensal microbiota. Sedentary lifestyle is associated with reduced exposure to a broad spectrum of environmental micro-organisms and surplus energy balance, both risk factors of chronic inflammatory disorders. According to the Biodiversity Hypothesis, an environment with diverse macrobiota and microbiota modifies and enriches the human microbiota, which in turn is crucial in the development and maintenance of appropriate immune function. These issues were discussed in the symposium 'Chronic Inflammation, Lifestyle and Environment ', held in Helsinki, 20 - 22 August 2014, under the sponsorship of the Yrjo Jahnsson Foundation. This paper briefly outlines the recent findings in the context of the environment, lifestyle, and health; discusses the forces that undermine immune tolerance in urban environments; and highlights the possibilities to restore broken immune tolerance among urban dwellers, summarizing the main messages in four statements and calling for actions to combat major public health threats.
