  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Although the second half of the twentieth century saw the rise and fall of ‘multi-flag companies’ (MFCs) in the civil aviation industry, our understanding of how some managed to buck the trend and achieve longevity remains limited. This article advances business history and strategic management research by examining the strategic renewal activities of Scandinavian Airlines (formerly Scandinavian Airlines System [SAS]) during the period 1946–2012. The study sheds light on the key roles of private and state owners, rivals as well as banks, in critical financial phases are discussed in terms of longevity in the company. The longevity of the business stems from the leaders’ ability to develop as anticipated and respond to change in their competitive arena in close interaction with the owners. Thus, incumbent firms that strategically renew themselves prior to or during market reform, such as deregulation, enhance their chances of developing the size of their networks and revenue streams. Our main contribution to business history and strategic management literatures is the development of context-specific stages, which shed light on the evolution of strategic renewal activities and shifts from older processes and routines towards customer service and efficiency.

  • 2018
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Sweden is often described as a country where intergenerational social mobility is high, but research also shows that social mobility decreases the closer one gets to the extreme top of the income distribution. We study the occupational mobility for the CEOs of Sweden’s 30 largest public firms since 1945. The study is based on a data set consisting of 229 former and current CEOs who were born between the late 1800s and 1970. We have information about paternal occupations for 185 (81%) of them. 60% grew up in Social Group I, which implies an overrepresentation for Social Group I by a factor of 9.7. Consequently, Social Groups II and III are underrepresented. However, almost four out of ten CEOs born in the 1940s came from Social Group III and toward the end of the period, the share coming from Social Group II roughly doubled to 35%.

  • Technological Shifts and the Social Partners : Is the European Semester Heading Towards a Social Europe?
  • 2021. - 1
  • In: The European Union and the Technology Shift. - London : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030636722 ; , s. 161-183
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This chapter describes and analyses the involvement of trade unions and employers’ organisations in the European Semester (ES) in EU member states. The ES is an important governance mechanism available to the EU to guide economic development in light of an imminent technological shift and, at the same time, involves organisations representing both workers and employers. The analysis shows that the ES could work as a bridge between growth and social reforms where the social partners are involved to ensure that all interests are considered in the governance of EU economic policy. However, the chapter also shows that there are substantive differences among the EU member states as to the extent to which if and when the social partners have a say, when they are involved in the process and whether governments listen to the social partners.
