  • Heterogeneous contributions of change in population distribution of body mass index to change in obesity and underweight NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: eLife. - : eLife Sciences Publications Ltd. - 2050-084X. ; 10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From 1985 to 2016, the prevalence of underweight decreased, and that of obesity and severe obesity increased, in most regions, with significant variation in the magnitude of these changes across regions. We investigated how much change in mean body mass index (BMI) explains changes in the prevalence of underweight, obesity, and severe obesity in different regions using data from 2896 population-based studies with 187 million participants. Changes in the prevalence of underweight and total obesity, and to a lesser extent severe obesity, are largely driven by shifts in the distribution of BMI, with smaller contributions from changes in the shape of the distribution. In East and Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, the underweight tail of the BMI distribution was left behind as the distribution shifted. There is a need for policies that address all forms of malnutrition by making healthy foods accessible and affordable, while restricting unhealthy foods through fiscal and regulatory restrictions.

  • Diminishing benefits of urban living for children and adolescents' growth and development
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Nature. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1476-4687 .- 0028-0836. ; 615:7954, s. 874-883
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Optimal growth and development in childhood and adolescence is crucial for lifelong health and well-being1–6. Here we used data from 2,325 population-based studies, with measurements of height and weight from 71 million participants, to report the height and body-mass index (BMI) of children and adolescents aged 5–19 years on the basis of rural and urban place of residence in 200 countries and territories from 1990 to 2020. In 1990, children and adolescents residing in cities were taller than their rural counterparts in all but a few high-income countries. By 2020, the urban height advantage became smaller in most countries, and in many high-income western countries it reversed into a small urban-based disadvantage. The exception was for boys in most countries in sub-Saharan Africa and in some countries in Oceania, south Asia and the region of central Asia, Middle East and north Africa. In these countries, successive cohorts of boys from rural places either did not gain height or possibly became shorter, and hence fell further behind their urban peers. The difference between the age-standardized mean BMI of children in urban and rural areas was <1.1 kg m–2 in the vast majority of countries. Within this small range, BMI increased slightly more in cities than in rural areas, except in south Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and some countries in central and eastern Europe. Our results show that in much of the world, the growth and developmental advantages of living in cities have diminished in the twenty-first century, whereas in much of sub-Saharan Africa they have amplified.

  • Experimental and theoretical gas phase electronic structure study of tetrakis(dimethylamino) complexes of Ti(IV) and Hf(IV)
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Electron Spectroscopy and Related Phenomena. - : Elsevier BV. - 0368-2048. ; 234, s. 80-85
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The gas phase electronic structure of two transition metal alkylamino complexes, M(N(CH3)2)4, where M = Ti, Hf, was studied using photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT). These studies are a first step for predicting atomic layer and chemical vapor deposition reactions on surfaces, which are common applications of these molecules. The valence photoemission spectra of these two complexes were collected with 50 and 150 eV photon energies. Comparison of calculated ionization energies and our experiments yielded good agreement. Analysis of calculated molecular orbitals provides insight into the π-donation interaction between the lone pair of electrons on the amino ligands and the empty metal orbitals. In addition to the valence structure, the core level photoemission spectra were analyzed. The π-interaction was found to influence core level ionization energies. Vibrational structure in the C 1s spectra are reported with insight from DFT calculations. The comprehensive experimental and theoretical characterization of the electronic structure of these complexes provide a robust foundation to progress to detailed spectroscopic studies of the interactions between these molecules and surfaces.

  • Local balancing of low-voltage networks by utilizing distributed flexibilities as part of the INTErFLEX field trial
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781509066841 ; , s. 3568-3575
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The growing share of Distributed Generators (DG) brings with it a fundamental change in dispatchability and location of the overall power generation portfolio. A significant share of DGs are renewable-based and connected to the distribution system, replacing the conventional generators placed at high voltage levels. With this fundamental shift in the power system, more active approaches to distribution system operation are required. In this paper the authors propose a model to utilize distributed flexibilities to locally balance power generation and demand, minimizing the power exchange between low and medium voltage levels. The proposed model is applied to several low voltage networks in the German distribution system. Simulation results show that the proposed model decreases the peak load in tested LV networks by 2.6-12.5%, and leads to an overall flattening of the load profile.

  • Marked variability in clinical presentation and outcome of patients with C1q immunodeficiency
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Journal of Autoimmunity. - : Elsevier BV. - 0896-8411 .- 1095-9157. ; 62, s. 39-44
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: Globally approximately 60 cases of C1q deficiency have been described with a high prevalence of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). So far treatment has been guided by the clinical presentation rather than the underlying C1q deficiency. Recently, it was shown that C1q production can be restored by allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Current literature lacks information on disease progression and quality of life of C1q deficient persons which is of major importance to guide clinicians taking care of patients with this rare disease. Methods: We performed an international survey, of clinicians treating C1q deficient patients. A high response rate of >70% of the contacted clinicians yielded information on 45 patients with C1q deficiency of which 25 are published. Results: Follow-up data of 45 patients from 31 families was obtained for a median of 11 years after diagnosis. Of these patients 36 (80%) suffer from SLE, of which 16 suffer from SLE and infections, 5 (11%) suffer from infections only and 4 (9%) have no symptoms. In total 9 (20%) of the C1q deficient individuals had died. All except for one died before the age of 20 years. Estimated survival times suggest 20% case-fatality before the age of 20, and at least 50% of patients are expected to reach their middle ages. Conclusion: Here we report the largest phenotypic data set on C1q deficiency to date, revealing high variance; with high mortality but also a subset of patients with an excellent prognosis. Management of C1q deficiency requires a personalized approach.
