  • The vacuum system of MAX IV storage rings : Installation and conditioning
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501823 ; , s. 3468-3470
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The installation of the vacuum system of the 3 GeV storage ring was started in November 2014 and finished in May 2015. In August 2015 the commissioning of the storage ring started, the first stored beam has been achieved on the 15th of September 2015. The installation of the vacuum system of the 1.5 GeV storage ring was done from September 2015 and the main part finished in December 2015, the connection to the Linac with the transfer line has been done in August 2016. In September 2016 the commissioning of the 1.5 GeV storage ring started with the first stored beam achieved on the 30th of September 2016. The vacuum system conditioning for the two rings was successful; the average dynamic pressure reduction and the increase in the lifetime with the accumulated beam dose is a demonstration of the good performance of the vacuum system. The installation procedure and the results of the conditioning together with the latest developments are introduced here.

  • The soft X-ray laser project at MAX IV
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - : Joint Accelerator Conferences Website - JACoW. - 9783954501823 ; , s. 2760-2762
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A Soft X-ray Laser (SXL) beamline utilising FEL technology is being designed for the Short Pulse Facility (SPF) at the MAX IV Laboratory. A conceptual design study has been started following on the scientific case already prepared in collaboration between several Swedish Universities and driven by a strong (Swedish) user demand. The baseline goal of the SXL beamline is to generate intense and short pulses in the range 1-5 nm (0.2-1 keV). The system is building on the MAX IV linac system, already today providing 100 fs 3 GeV and pulses compressed to 100 fs for other applications within the SPF. As a special feature we foresee a variety of pump-probe capabilities.

  • Emittance improvements in the MAX IV photocathode injector
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501823 - 9783954501823 ; , s. 1533-1536
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The MAX IV injector design predicts a beam with 100 pC of charge and an emittance lower than 1 mm mrad. The photocathode pre-injector is based on the now close to standard 1.6-cell gun adapted to 2.9985 GHz, in combination with a Ti:Sapphire laser system. This system reaches the requirements of the injector operation for the SPF, but can be tuned beyond specifications to open up new operation modes. During 2016 and 2017 several aspects where investigated to improve the emittance from the current gun, the goal was to meet the SPF specifications. In this paper we report on the progress, discuss the steps taken leading to a final emittance of 1 mm mrad and beyond.

  • Driver-witness-bunches for plasma-wakefield acceleration at the MAX IV Linear Accelerator
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501823 ; , s. 1743-1746
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Beam-driven plasma-wakefield acceleration is an acceleration scheme promising accelerating fields of at least two to three orders of magnitude higher than in conventional radiofrequency accelerating structures. The scheme relies on using a charged particle bunch (driver) to drive a non-linear plasma wake, into which a second bunch (witness) can be injected at an appropriate distance behind the first, yielding a substantial energy gain of the witness bunch particles. This puts very special demands on the machine providing the particle beam. In this article, we use simulations to show that, if driver-witness-bunches can be generated in the photocathode electron gun, the MAX IV Linear Accelerator could be used for plasma-wakefield acceleration.

  • Status of the ESS elliptical cryomodules at CEA saclay
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501823 ; , s. 945-947
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first ESS prototype cryomodule with medium beta cavities named M-ECCTD is being assembled at CEA Saclay. The Q curves of the 4 cavities mounted inside the cryomodule are presented, and the four power couplers have been conditioned at high power before their assembly onto the cavity string. Completion of the M-ECCTD assembly outside clean room is in progress as well as the finalization of the RF power test stand preparation. RF power tests of the M-ECCTD will be performed during summer 2017. CEA is preparing the production of the ESS medium and high beta cryomodules of the series before the test of the M-ECCTD and the contracts for the procurement of the most critical components have already been signed.

  • Vertical test results on ESS medium and high beta elliptical cavity prototypes equipped with helium tank
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501823 ; , s. 948-950
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The ESS elliptical superconducting Linac consists of two types of 704.42 MHz cavities, medium and high beta, to accelerate the beam from 216 MeV (spoke cavity Linac) up to the final energy at 2 GeV. The last Linac optimization, called Optimus+[1], has been carried out taking into account the limitations of SRF cavity performance (field emission). The medium and high-beta parts of the Linac are composed of 36 and 84 elliptical cavities, with geometrical beta values of 0.67 and 0.86 respectively [2]. This work presents the latest vertical test results on ESS medium and high beta elliptical cavity prototypes equipped with helium tank. We describe the cavity preparation procedure from buffer chemical polishing to vertical test.

  • MAX IV online LINAC model
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501823 ; , s. 4047-4049
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An online linac model has been developed at MAX IV in order to enable a calculation of the properties of the linac beam based on the actual settings of the magnetic elements. The model is based on the Elegant simulation code and uses the design linac lattice file. A set of Matlab scripts fetch the actual settings of all elements via the Tango control system, pass these values on to Elegant and run the simulation. The model includes an optimization option for yielding desired beta- and alpha-function values at various points along the linac by calculating optimal settings for chosen elements.

  • Pulse shaping at the MAX IV photoelectron gun laser
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501823 - 9783954501823 ; , s. 1541-1543
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • A motivation for the development of a versatile, programmable source of shaped picosecond pulses for use in photocathode electron gun preinjectors is presented. We present the experimental setup for arbitrary longitudinal pusle shaping of the MAX IV photocathode gun laser. The setup consists of a grating-based Fourier-domain shaper capable of stretching the pulses directly in the UV domain. Preliminary results are presented and discussed.

  • Pushing the MAX IV 3 GeV storage ring brightness and coherence towards the limit of its magnetic lattice
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501823 ; , s. 2557-2560
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The MAX IV 3 GeV storage ring is presently being commissioned and crucial parameters such as machine functions, emittance, and stored current have either already been reached or are approaching their design specifications [1, 2]. Once the baseline performance has been achieved, a campaign will be launched to further improve the brightness and coherence of this storage ring for typical x-ray users. During recent years, several such improvements have been designed [3-5]. Common to these approaches is that they attempt to improve the storage ring performance using existing hardware provided for the baseline design. Such improvements therefore present more short-term upgrades. In this paper, however, we investigate medium-term improvements assuming power supplies can be exchanged in an attempt to push the brightness and coherence of the storage ring to the limit of what can be achieved without exchanging the magnetic lattice itself. We outline optics requirements, the optics optimization process, and summarize achievable parameters.

  • ESS Spoke Cavity Conditioning at FREIA
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of IPAC2017. - 9783954501823 ; , s. 1074-1076
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The first ESS double spoke cavity installed with RF power coupler was tested in the HNOSS cryostat at the FREIA Laboratory. Power coupler and cavity conditioning have been optimized in order to reach high efficiency and high availability by reducing the time and effort of the overall conditioning process. Meanwhile, an optimal procedure for ESS conditioning is studied. This paper presents the study result and experience of the RF conditioning procedure for the first ESS double spoke cavity.

  • MAX IV Photocathode Gun Laser System Specification and Diagnostics
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501823 - 9783954501823 ; , s. 1544-1546
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The MAXIV injector has two guns - a thermionic used for ring injections, and a photocathode used for short pulse facility operation. A commercial Ti:sapphire laser from KMLabs drives the copper based photocathode gun. It has been running without major issues for more than 3 years. The laser delivers up to §I{500}{\textmu J} on the cathode at the third harmonic, §I{263}{nm}, via a vacuum laser transport system. To achieve the desired pulse duration of 2–§I10{ps} the laser pulses, originally ~§I{100}{fs} long, are stretched with a prism pair and the resulting §I{1.5}{ps} pulses stacked by a series of birefringent \textalpha -BBO crystals. Diagnostics consist of photodiodes, spectrometers, and cameras. Longitudinal pulse characterization is done with a cross correlator and a UV FROG.

  • Residual gas in the vacuum system of the solaris 1.5 GeV electron storage ring
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501823 ; , s. 2734-2737
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Solaris is a third generation light source constructed at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. The machine was designed by the MAX IV Laboratory team. The replica of the 1.5 GeV storage ring with 96 m circumference of a vacuum system was successfully built and now the synchrotron facility is after the 3rd phase of commissioning. Recent installation of the Residual Gas Analyzer (RGA) in the storage ring allows now for evaluation of the residual gas composition. Within this paper the result of residual gas analysis in the vacuum system of storage ring during different states of the machine will be presented. Result of vacuum performance regarding beam cleaning and beam lifetime will be presented. Moreover, the NEG strips performance will be evaluated and reported.

  • Distribution and extreme loss analysis in the ESS linac : A statistical perspective
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501823 ; , s. 4458-4461
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The report takes a statistical approach in the study of distribution evolution of the proton beam within the ESS linac and reports a new technique of pinpointing the non-linear space-charge effect of the propagating proton beam. By using the test statistic from the nonparametric Kolmogorov-Smirnov test the author visualises the change in the normalised distributions by looking at the supremum distance between the cumulative distribution functions in comparison, and the propagation of the deviation throughout the ESS linac. This approach identifies changes in the distribution which may cause losses in the linac and highlights the parts where the space-charge has big impact on the beam distribution. Also, an Extreme Value Theory approach is adopted in order to quantify the effects of the non linear forces affecting the proton beam distribution.

  • On the coherence properties of FEL
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501823 ; , s. 2753-2755
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • FELs are well known for generating highly coherent light with excellent brilliance. In order to improve FEL coherence we have to follow how coherence evolves along the undulator and determine the factors that influence it the most. This paper presents qualitative coherence features that shine new light on the importance of coherence studies in the design of an FEL. By simulating and then analyzing the the FEL light we arrive at results linking coherence to parameters such as undulator polarization or seed laser power density.

  • Status of MAX IV linac beam commissioning and performance
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501823 ; , s. 1547-1549
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The MAX IV linac is used both for injection into a 3 GeV storage ring, and as a high brightness driver for a Short Pulse Facility (SPF). It has also been deigned to handle the high demands of an FEL injector. The linac is now routinely injecting into the two storagerings, and commissioning work is focused towards delivering high brightness pulses to the SPF. In this paper we present results from characterisation of the linac in ring injection mode, as well as results from measurements of key parameters for the SPF such as bunch length and emittance.

  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IPAC 2017 - Proceedings of the 8th International Particle Accelerator Conference. - 9783954501823 ; , s. 123-125
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Beam characteristics at low energy are an absolute necessity for an acceptable injection in the next stage of a linear accelerator, and are also necessary to reduce beam loss and radiation inside the machine. CEA is taking part of ESS linac construction, by designing Emittance Measurement Units (EMU) for the Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT). The EMU are designed to qualify the proton beam produced by the INFN Catania ion source. The design corresponds to an Allison scanner, using entrance and exit slits, electrostatic plates and a faraday cup. The beam-stopper protects the device and can be removable to fit to beam power. It has been manufactured by the CEA/LITEN with copper tungsten HIP technique. This article report the first measurements on the ESS injector in CATANIA in one dimension.
