  • Heavy metals effect on the rat uterus and effectiveness of vitamin E treatment
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Jordan Journal of Biological Sciences. - : Hashemite University. - 1995-6673. ; 16:3, s. 455-465
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental pollution by heavy metals (HMs) is an increasingly critical problem that is posing a growing threat to reproductive health. Consequently, the aim of the current research was to study changes in rat uterus under 90 days of HMs exposure and estimate the efficacy and benefits of vitamin E treatment. Female rats were randomly divided into three groups: untreated animals (control group); animals orally treated with the HMs mixture (HM group); and animals treated simultaneously with HMs and vitamin E (HM+E group). The toxic effects of the HMs (comprising Zn, Cu, Mn, Fe, Pb, and Cr) on the uterus of rats were investigated by histological, morphometrical, spectrophotometrical, and statistical methods.Long-term HMs exposure triggered pathological (degenerative, inflammation, and atrophic) changes in the rat uterus together with a significant reduction of the uterine-wall thickness (37.99%, p<0.0001) compared to the control. In contrast, there was a lower intensity of morphological lesions and wall thickness decrease (26.03%, p<0.0001) in the uterus, in rats that underwent treatment with vitamin E. A substantial bioaccumulation of zinc, copper, manganese, iron, lead, and chromium general levels in the rat uterus was demonstrated in both the HM group (74.46%, p<0.0001) and the HM+E group (49.81%, p<0.0001), as compared to the control group. The lowest accumulative potential belonged to Zn and the highest to Pb. The results obtained showed a significant decline in the weight of animals treated by HMs in both HM (18,21%, p<0.01) and HM+E (13,09%; p<0.05) groups compared to the control. Our findings have demonstrated that treatment with vitamin E in HM-induced intoxication has a significant restrain of HMs accumulation (up to 16.46%, p<0.0001) together with morphometric variations (less on 16.17%, p<0.01).In summary, long-term exposure to the HMs mixture had a pernicious toxic effect on the morphology and chemical content of the uterus of rats (strong negative correlations). Treatment with vitamin E significantly reversed the HMs impact on the uterus but did not demonstrate absolute protection.

  • Postural stability deficit could predict ankle sprains: a systematic review
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Knee Surgery Sports Traumatology Arthroscopy. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0942-2056 .- 1433-7347. ; 26:10, s. 3140-3155
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose To perform a systematic review aimed to determine (1) if the postural stability deficit represents a risk factor for ankle sprains; (2) the most effective postural stability evaluation to predict ankle sprains and (3) eventual confounding factors that could influence postural stability and ankle sprain risk. Methods A systematic electronic search was performed in MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL using the search terms (balance) OR (postural stability) matched with (lower limb) OR (ankle) OR (foot) and (sprain) OR (injury) on October 2 2017. All prospective studies that evaluated postural stability as risk factor for ankle sprains were included. The PRISMA Checklist guided the reporting and data abstraction. Methodological quality of all included papers was carefully assessed. Results Fifteen studies were included, evaluating 2860 individuals. Various assessment tools or instruments were used to assess postural stability. The injury incidence ranged from 10 to 34%. Postural stability deficit was recognized as risk factor for ankle sprain (OR = 1.22-10.2) in 9 cases [3 out of 3 with Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT)]. Among the six studies that measured the center-of-gravity sway, five were able to detect worse postural stability in athletes that sustained an ankle sprain. In nine cases, the measurement of postural stability did not show any statistical relationship with ankle sprains (four out of five with examiner evaluation). In the studies that excluded patients with history of ankle sprain, postural stability was reported to be a significant risk factor in five out of six studies. Conclusions The ultimate role of postural stability as risk factor for ankle sprains was not defined, due to the high heterogeneity of results, patient's populations, sports and methods of postural stability evaluation. Regarding assessment instruments, measurement of center-of-gravity sway could detect athletes at risk, however, standardized tools and protocols are needed to confirm this finding. The SEBT could be considered a promising tool that needs further investigation in wider samples. History of ankle sprains is an important confounding factor, since it was itself a source of postural stability impairment and a risk factor for ankle sprains. These information could guide clinicians in developing screening programs and design further prospective cohort studies comparing different evaluation tools.

  • Preparation and characterization of MgB2 with Pd, Pt and Re doping
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Physica. C, Superconductivity. - : Elsevier BV. - 0921-4534 .- 1873-2143. ; 520, s. 37-41
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Samples with Mg1-xDxB2.04 (D = Pt, Pd or Re) nominal compositions have been synthesised by a solid-state route. None of these doping elements can be substituted for Mg in a detectable amount and their presence in the samples has no influence on the critical temperature and on the lattice parameters of the MgB2 superconductor. Impurity phases are formed by reaction mostly with Mg. The microstructure of the Pt, Pd and Re-based phases depends on the elements. Re-rich particles with large sizes up to 8 mu m form, whereas Pt- and Pd-containing impurities are finely dispersed with a particle size that does not exceed 1 mu m. The field dependence of the normalised critical current density is improved when Pt, Pd or Re are present in the samples. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

  • Translation and Validation of the Greek Version of the Antipsychotics and Sexual Functioning Questionnaire (ASFQ)
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sexual Medicine. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 2050-1161. ; 9:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction: Sexual dysfunction in patients with psychoses may be associated with the psychiatric illness itself (negative symptoms, such as apathy, and avolition), comorbid somatic health, psychosocial factors (stigmatization, discrimination), and the use of psychotropic drugs. In Greece, research into the study of antipsychoticinduced sexual dysfunction is not sufficient. Aim: This study was conducted to translate and validate the Greek version of the Antipsychotics and Sexual Functioning Questionnaire (ASFQ) in a sample of patients receiving antipsychotic treatment. Methods: A "forward-backward translation" method was applied. A pilot study was conducted with 15 outpatients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder under antipsychotics treatment. Patients also completed the "Subjects' Response to Antipsychotics (SRA)" questionnaire in order to assess the validity of the ASFQ. The ASFQ and the SRA questionnaire were completed twice within 2 weeks. Main outcome measures: Reliability (internal consistency and test-retest) and validity were assessed. Results: The Greek translation of ASFQ was reliable, with excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's a = 0.90 formen and 0.95 for women in both measurements). In addition, the Spearman correlation coefficient was 1 (P<.001) in all Likert-type questions in both assessments. Finally, Spearman correlation coefficients between ASFQ and SRA were moderately positive to strongly positive (between 0.25 and 1) in both assessments, demonstrating moderate to high validity. Conclusions: The Greek version of the ASFQ has proved to be a reliable and valid clinical instrument, hence it can be used in further studies in the Greek population. Copyright (C) 2021 The Authors. • Synthesis, structure and interactions with DNA of novel tetranuclear, [Mn-4(II/II/II/IV)] mixed valence complexes
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry. - : Elsevier BV. - 1873-3344 .- 0162-0134. ; 102:4, s. 618-628
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reaction of Mn(II) with phenoxyalkanoic acids and di-2-pyridyl ketone oxime (Hpko) leads to neutral tetranuclear complexes of the general formula Mn-4(O)(pko)(4)(phenoxyalkanoato)(4) (phenoxyalkanoic acids: H-mcpa = 2-methyl-4-chloro-phenoxy-acetic acid, H-2,4,5-T = 2,4.5-trichloro-phenoxy-acetic acid or H3,4-D = 3,4-dichloro-phenoxy-acetic acid). The compounds were synthesized by adding di2-pyridyl ketone oxime to MnCl2 in the presence of the sodium salts of the alkanoic acids in methanol. The crystal structure of Mn-4(II/II/ II/IV)(O)(pko)4(()2,4,5-T)(4) . 2.5CH(3)OH . 0.25H(2)O 1 shows that the complex consists of a [Mn-4( mu(4)-O)](8+) core with a Mn(IV) and 3 Mn(II) ions in octahedral environment and a mu(4)-O atom bridging the four manganese ions. Spectroscopic studies of the interaction of these tetranuclear clusters with DNA showed that these compounds bind to dsDNA. The binding strength of the Mn-4(II/II/II/ IV)(O)(pko)(4)(2,4,5-T)(4) complex for calf thymus DNA is equal to 1.1 X 10(4) M-1. Among the deoxyribonucleotides they bind preferentially to deoxyguanylic acid (dGMP). Competitive studies with ethidium bromide (EthBr) showed that the Mn-4(II/II/II/ IV)(O)(pko)(4)(2,4,.5-T)(4) complex exhibited the ability to displace the DNA-bound EthBr indicating that the complex binds to DNA via intercalation in strong competition with EthBr for the intercalative binding site. Additionally, DNA electrophoretic mobility experiments showed that all three complexes, at low cluster concentration, are obviously capable of binding to pDNA causing its cleavage (relaxation) at physiological pH and temperature. At higher cluster concentration, catenated dimer forms of pDNA was formed.

  • Malignant Central Nervous System Tumors Among Adolescents and Young Adults (15-39 Years Old) in 14 Southern-Eastern European Registries and the US Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program: Mortality and Survival Patterns
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Cancer. - : WILEY. - 0008-543X .- 1097-0142. ; 123:22, s. 4458-4471
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Unique features and worse outcomes have been reported for cancers among adolescents and young adults (AYAs; 15-39 years old). The aim of this study was to explore the mortality and survival patterns of malignant central nervous system (CNS) tumors among AYAs in Southern-Eastern Europe (SEE) in comparison with the US Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program. METHODS: Malignant CNS tumors diagnosed in AYAs during the period spanning 1990-2014 were retrieved from 14 population-based cancer registries in the SEE region (n = 11,438). Age-adjusted mortality rates were calculated and survival patterns were evaluated via Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression analyses, and they were compared with respective 1990-2012 figures from SEER (n = 13,573). RESULTS: Mortality rates in SEE (range, 11.9-18.5 deaths per million) were higher overall than the SEER rate (9.4 deaths per million), with decreasing trends in both regions. Survival rates increased during a comparable period (2001-2009) in SEE and SEER. The 5-year survival rate was considerably lower in the SEE registries (46%) versus SEER (67%), mainly because of the extremely low rates in Ukraine; this finding was consistent across age groups and diagnostic subtypes. The highest 5-year survival rates were recorded for ependymomas (76% in SEE and 92% in SEER), and the worst were recorded for glioblastomas and anaplastic astrocytomas (28% in SEE and 37% in SEER). Advancing age, male sex, and rural residency at diagnosis adversely affected outcomes in both regions. CONCLUSIONS: Despite definite survival gains over the last years, the considerable outcome disparities between the less affluent SEE region and the United States for AYAs with malignant CNS tumors point to health care delivery inequalities. No considerable prognostic deficits for CNS tumors are evident for AYAs versus children. (c) 2017 American Cancer Society.

  • The Influence of Evidence-Based Design on Staff Perceptions of a Supportive Environment for Person-Centered Care in Forensic Psychiatry
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of forensic nursing. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 1556-3693 .- 1939-3938. ; 16:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This prospective longitudinal study aimed to examine the relocation of three forensic psychiatric hospitals in Sweden into new facilities. The research focused on the effects of the physical and psychosocial environment and other staff-related parameters on the delivery of person-centered care after relocation. In forensic psychiatry, most relocations to new environments are to support a person-centered approach and to promote patients' rehabilitation and reintegration into society. Hopefully, this is undertaken in accordance with an evidence-based design strategy allowing improvement in staff satisfaction and working conditions as well as their capacity to provide individualized care. All staff members working on the wards of the facilities in question were invited to participate in the study. Data were collected prospectively between 2010 and 2014, before and after relocation of the forensic psychiatric clinics to new buildings. Structured validated questionnaires were employed. Staff members' job satisfaction and perceptions of a person-centered physical and psychosocial environment increased after relocation and provide evidence that staff perceptions of ward atmosphere in forensic psychiatric clinics are susceptible to factors in the physical and psychosocial environment. The importance of always taking the environmental factors into consideration, to achieve greater staff well-being and capacity to accomplish goals in forensic psychiatry, is emphasized.

  • Production and characterization of cellulolytic enzymes from the thermophilic fungus Thermoascus aurantiacus under solid state cultivation of agricultural wastes
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Process Biochemistry. - 1359-5113 .- 1873-3298. ; 38:7, s. 1099-1104
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Extracellular cellulolytic enzymes were produced under solid state cultivation by the thermophilic fungus Thermoascus aurantiacus and characterized. Elevated levels of endoglucanase and β-glucosidase activities were produced simultaneously by optimization of growth factors. Under optimal growth conditions, 1572 U endoglucanase and 101.6 U β-glucosidase per g of carbon source were obtained. Chromogenic (fluorogenic) 4-methylumbelliferyl-β-glycosides of glucose (MUG) and cellobiose (MUG2) were used to characterize the cellulolytic multienzyme components after separation by isoelectric focusing. The zymogram indicated one endoglucanase and one β-glucosidase with pI values 3.5 and 3.9, respectively. Both enzymes exhibited significant thermostability, with half-lives of 42 and 18 min, respectively, at 80°C

  • Autonomous Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Through Wireless Energy Harvesting
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: 95th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference - Spring, VTC 2022-Spring. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we examine the potential for a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to be powered by energy harvested from information signals. This feature might be key to reap the benefits of RIS technology's lower power consumption compared to active relays. We first identify the main RIS power-consuming components and then propose an energy harvesting and power consumption model. Furthermore, we formulate and solve the problem of the optimal RIS placement together with the amplitude and phase response adjustment of its elements in order to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) while harvesting sufficient energy for its operation. Finally, numerical results validate the autonomous operation potential and reveal the range of power consumption values that enables it.
