  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Gothic church vaults - an economic perspective: The uneven occurence of vaults from the period ca 1275-1550 in the Danish (incl. the Schleswig area) churches is mapped. Presuming that the main function of the vaults was fire protection, and that all congregations wanted their church vaulted, it is argued that the distribution of vaults reflects economic conditions, and the conditions of church building are presented in a model.

  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The aim of the report: This report on the situation of urban arachaeology in Båstad is written as part of the project The Medieval Town: Implications of Early Urbanization for Modem Planning, under the auspices of Riksantikvarieämbetet and Statens historiska museer. The aim of the project is to make a detailed survey and documentation of the situation of urban archaeology and its implications for physical planning and make a scholarly evaluation of the uncovered material. The project deals mainly with those places which obtained town rights in the formal legal sense during the Middle Ages. The arrangement of the report: Chapters 1 and 2 give an account of a number of data which in various ways are important for the early development of the town. The information is collected from available literature (mainly as regards documentary material) as well as from primary material in the archives (archaeological data, records from borings). In the first-mentioned case no attempt has been made to correct possible faults through independent research. As regards the archaeological material, the aim has been to include all archaeological observations, even if for different reasons this has not always been possible. One important aim during work on the report has been to appraise and evaluate the archaeological material and to what extent it throws light on essential problems concerning urban history. The basic idea is that archaeological material can provide information about chronology, function, social structure and economic bases. The material has been arranged on the assumption that the form of settlement which took place and is reflected in the archaeological material is the result of a functional adaption to certain decisive prerequisites such as topography, communications, and economical-geographical conditions. The data have been chosen and structured on this basis. The selection gives both a general view of the available material concerning the development of the medieval town and a basis for further work on this material. This in turn will provide a foundation for the antiquarian evaluation in relation to future work. The English summary gives a broad outline of the contents, mainly based on the maps of the report. • Människor byggnader sammanhang : idéskrift om en utvecklad byggnadsarkeologi
  • 2018
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2018
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • ”The Good Death,” an archeological study of graves, burial rituals and practices at the Dominican convent St. Olof in Skänninge, is a dissertation arising out of the large grave materials from various archeological investigations of the convent. A total of six investigations have been made of the convent within the framework of the so called Skänninge Project (Skänningeprojektet). In a number of these excavations, graves from the burial ground of the Dominican convent have been more or less in focus. In total, 287 graves have been excavated, generally showing great homogeneity of interment practices. The majority of the graves lacks all kind of grave goods, and most of the deceased have been interred without a coffin. The overall focus has been on understanding the graves and the burial customs in a contemporaneous and situational context. The dissertation does not primarily focus on the Dominican order in itself, although it works as a major actor in the framework of the graves. For this purpose, a so-called archeothanatological method is used to analyze the burials. The intention is thus to clarify general features in the funeral tradition in the convent, and their possible connection to the role of the Dominicans as ritual specialists. In this context, the interior design of the Dominician church has also played a significant role, which is important for the choice of burial site as well as for the rituals performed for the deceased. Therefore, it is primarily a dissertation that deals with medieval burials and funeral rituals, but in a special context. The object has been to use the graves as an important archaeological source material, partially studied with new methods, to create new questions. These questions are discussed an analyzed in the light of other archaeological finds, as well as historical and other source materials.
