  • Commissioning of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer with cosmic rays
  • 2010
  • In: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 70:3, s. 875-916
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider has collected several hundred million cosmic ray events during 2008 and 2009. These data were used to commission the Muon Spectrometer and to study the performance of the trigger and tracking chambers, their alignment, the detector control system, the data acquisition and the analysis programs. We present the performance in the relevant parameters that determine the quality of the muon measurement. We discuss the single element efficiency, resolution and noise rates, the calibration method of the detector response and of the alignment system, the track reconstruction efficiency and the momentum measurement. The results show that the detector is close to the design performance and that the Muon Spectrometer is ready to detect muons produced in high energy proton-proton collisions.

  • Readiness of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter for LHC collisions
  • 2010
  • In: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 70:4, s. 1193-1236
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Tile hadronic calorimeter of the ATLAS detector has undergone extensive testing in the experimental hall since its installation in late 2005. The readout, control and calibration systems have been fully operational since 2007 and the detector has successfully collected data from the LHC single beams in 2008 and first collisions in 2009. This paper gives an overview of the Tile Calorimeter performance as measured using random triggers, calibration data, data from cosmic ray muons and single beam data. The detector operation status, noise characteristics and performance of the calibration systems are presented, as well as the validation of the timing and energy calibration carried out with minimum ionising cosmic ray muons data. The calibration systems' precision is well below the design value of 1%. The determination of the global energy scale was performed with an uncertainty of 4%.

  • Studies of the performance of the ATLAS detector using cosmic-ray muons
  • 2011
  • In: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 71:3
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Muons from cosmic-ray interactions in the atmosphere provide a high-statistics source of particles that can be used to study the performance and calibration of the ATLAS detector. Cosmic-ray muons can penetrate to the cavern and deposit energy in all detector subsystems. Such events have played an important role in the commissioning of the detector since the start of the installation phase in 2005 and were particularly important for understanding the detector performance in the time prior to the arrival of the first LHC beams. Global cosmic-ray runs were undertaken in both 2008 and 2009 and these data have been used through to the early phases of collision data-taking as a tool for calibration, alignment and detector monitoring. These large datasets have also been used for detector performance studies, including investigations that rely on the combined performance of different subsystems. This paper presents the results of performance studies related to combined tracking, lepton identification and the reconstruction of jets and missing transverse energy. Results are compared to expectations based on a cosmic-ray event generator and a full simulation of the detector response.

  • The ATLAS Simulation Infrastructure
  • 2010
  • In: European Physical Journal C. Particles and Fields. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1434-6044 .- 1434-6052. ; 70:3, s. 823-874
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The simulation software for the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider is being used for large-scale production of events on the LHC Computing Grid. This simulation requires many components, from the generators that simulate particle collisions, through packages simulating the response of the various detectors and triggers. All of these components come together under the ATLAS simulation infrastructure. In this paper, that infrastructure is discussed, including that supporting the detector description, interfacing the event generation, and combining the GEANT4 simulation of the response of the individual detectors. Also described are the tools allowing the software validation, performance testing, and the validation of the simulated output against known physics processes.

  • Combination of CDF and D0 measurements of the W boson helicity in top quark decays
  • 2012
  • In: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998 .- 1550-2368. ; 85:7, s. 071106-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We report the combination of recent measurements of the helicity of the W boson from top quark decay by the CDF and D0 collaborations, based on data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.7-5.4 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions collected during Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron collider. Combining measurements that simultaneously determine the fractions of W bosons with longitudinal (f(0)) and right-handed (f(+)) helicities, we find f(0) = 0.722 +/- 0.081[+/- 0.062(stat) +/- 0.052(syst)] and f(+) = -0.033 +/- 0.046[+/- 0.034(stat) +/- 0.031(syst)]. Combining measurements where one of the helicity fractions is fixed to the value expected in the standard model, we find f(0) = 0.682 +/- 0.057[+/- 0.035(stat) +/- 0.046(syst)] for fixed f(+) and f(+) = -0.015 +/- 0.035[+/- 0.018(stat) +/- 0.030(syst)] for fixed f(0). The results are consistent with standard model expectations.

  • Combined Tevatron upper limit on gg -> H -> W+W- and constraints on the Higgs boson mass in fourth-generation fermion models
  • 2010
  • In: Physical Review D. - 1550-7998. ; 82, s. 011102-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We combine results from searches by the CDF and D0 collaborations for a standard model Higgs boson (H) in the process gg -> H -> W+W- in p (p) over bar collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider at root s = 1.96 TeV. With 4.8 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity analyzed at CDF and 5.4 fb(-1) at D0, the 95% confidence level upper limit on sigma(gg -> H) x B(H -> W+W-) is 1.75 pb at m(H) = 120 GeV, 0.38 pb at m(H) = 165 GeV, and 0.83 pb at m(H) = 200 GeV. Assuming the presence of a fourth sequential generation of fermions with large masses, we exclude at the 95% confidence level a standard-model-like Higgs boson with a mass between 131 and 204 GeV.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • First measurements of the differential cross sections d(3)sigma/(dp(T)(gamma)dy(gamma)dy(jet)) for the inclusive production of a photon in association with a heavy quark (b, c) jet are presented, covering photon transverse momenta 30 < p(T)(gamma)< 150 GeV, photon rapidities |y(gamma)|< 1.0, jet rapidities |y(jet)|< 0.8, and jet transverse momenta p(T)(jet)> 15 GeV. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 1 fb(-1) in pp collisions at s=1.96 TeV recorded with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The results are compared with next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions.

  • Measurement of the Z gamma -> nu(nu)over-bar gamma Production Cross Section and Limits on Anomalous ZZ gamma and Z gamma gamma Couplings in p(p)over-bar Collisions at root s=1.96 TeV
  • 2009
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 102:20, s. 201802-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present the first observation of the Z gamma -> nu(nu) over bar gamma process at the Fermilab Tevatron at 5.1 standard deviations significance, based on 3.6 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p (p) over bar Collider at root s = 1.96 TeV. The measured Z gamma production cross section multiplied by the branching fraction of Z -> nu(nu) over bar is 32 +/- 9(stat + syst) +/- 2(lumi) fb for the photon E-T > 90 GeV. It is in agreement with the standard model prediction of 39 +/- 4 fb. We set limits on anomalous trilinear Z gamma gamma and ZZ gamma gauge boson couplings, most of which are the most restrictive to date.

  • 2009
  • In: Physics Letters B. - : Elsevier BV. - 0370-2693 .- 1873-2445. ; 678:1, s. 45-54
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present cross section measurements for Z/gamma* + jets + X production, differential in the transverse momenta of the three leading jets. The data sample was collected with the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p (p) over bar collider at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1 fb(-1). Leading and next-to-leading order perturbative QCD predictions are compared with the measurements. and agreement is found within the theoretical and experimental uncertainties. We also make comparisons with the predictions of four event generators. Two parton-shower-based generators show significant shape and normalization differences with respect to the data. In contrast, two generators combining tree-level matrix elements with a parton shower give a reasonable description of the shapes observed in data. but the predicted normalizations show significant differences with respect to the data, reflecting large scale Uncertainties. For specific choices of scales, the normalizations for either generator can be made to agree with the measurements.

  • 2009
  • In: Physical Review Letters. - 0031-9007 .- 1079-7114. ; 102:19, s. 191802-
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We describe a search for production of a charged Higgs boson, qq>-> H+, reconstructed in the tb final state in the mass range 180 <= M-H(+)<= 300 GeV. The search was undertaken at the Fermilab Tevatron collider with a center-of-mass energy s=1.96 TeV and uses 0.9 fb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector. We find no evidence for charged Higgs boson production and set upper limits on the production cross section in the types I, II, and III two-Higgs-doublet models (2HDMs). An excluded region in the (M-H(+), tan beta) plane for type I 2HDM is presented.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We report on a first search for production of the lightest neutral CP-even Higgs boson (h) in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model, where h decays to a pair of neutral pseudoscalar Higgs bosons (a), using 4.2 fb(-1) of data recorded with the D0 detector at Fermilab. The a bosons are required to either both decay to mu(+)mu(-) or one to mu(+)mu(-) and the other to tau(+)tau(-). No significant signal is observed, and we set limits on its production as functions of M-a and M-h.

    • We present a search for a narrow resonance in the inclusive diphoton final state using similar to 2.7 fb(-1) of data collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p (p) over bar Collider. We observe good agreement between the data and the background prediction, and set the first 95% C. L. upper limits on the production cross section times the branching ratio for decay into a pair of photons for resonance masses between 100 and 150 GeV. This search is also interpreted in the context of several models of electroweak symmetry breaking with a Higgs boson decaying into two photons.

We select two final states: tau(+/-) plus missing transverse energy and b jets, and tau(+)tau(-) plus jets. These final states are sensitive to a combination of associated W/Z boson plus Higgs boson, vector boson fusion, and gluon-gluon fusion production processes. The observed ratio of the combined limit on the Higgs production cross section at the 95% C.L. to the standard model expectation is 29 for a Higgs boson mass of 115 GeV.

    • We present new results of the search for WH --> lvb (b) over bar production in p (p) over bar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root S = 1.96 TeV, based on a dataset with integrated luminosity of 0.44 fb(-1). We combine these new results with previously published searches by the DO collaboration, for WH and ZH production analyzed in the E(T)b (b) over bar final state, for ZH (--> l(+)l(-)b (b) over bar) production, for WH (-->. WWW) production, and for H (--> W W) direct production. No signal-like excess is observed either in the W H analysis or in the combination of all D0 Higgs boson analyses. We set 95% C.L. (expected) upper limits on sigma(p (p) over bar --> WH) x B(H --> b (b) over bar) ranging from 1.6 (2.2) ph to 1.9 (3.3) pb for Higgs boson masses between 105 and 145 GeV, to be compared to the theoretical prediction of 0.13 pb for a Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson with mass in m(H) = 115 GeV. After combination with the other DO Higgs boson searches, we obtain for in H = 115 GeV an observed (expected) limit 8.5 (12.1) times higher than the SM predicted Higgs boson production cross section. For m(H) = 160 GeV, the corresponding observed (expected) ratio is 10.2 (9.0).

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Samples of inclusive gamma + 2 jet and gamma + 3 jet events collected by the D0 experiment with an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb(-1) in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV are used to measure cross sections as a function of the angle in the plane transverse to the beam direction between the transverse momentum (p(T)) of the gamma + leading jet system (jets are ordered in p(T)) and p(T) of the other jet for gamma + 2 jet, or p(T) sum of the two other jets for gamma + 3 jet events. The results are compared to different models of multiple parton interactions (MPI) in the PYTHIA and SHERPA Monte Carlo (MC) generators. The data indicate a contribution from events with double parton (DP) interactions and are well-described by predictions provided by the PYTHIA MPI models with p(T)-ordered showers and by SHERPA with the default MPI model. The gamma + 2 jet data are also used to determine the fraction of events with DP interactions as a function of the azimuthal angle and as a function of the second jet p(T).

    • We present a measurement of the differential cross section for t (t) over bar events produced in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV as a function of the transverse momentum (p(T)) of the top quark. The selected events contain a high-p(T) lepton (l), a large imbalance in p(T). four or more jets with at least one candidate for a b jet, and correspond to 1 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity recorded with the D0 detector. Objects in the event are associated through a constrained kinematic fit to the t (t) over bar -> WbW (b) over bar -> lvbq (q) over bar' (b) over bar process. Results from next and next-to-next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations agree with the measured differential cross section. Comparisons are also provided to predictions from Monte Carlo event generators using QCD calculations at different levels of precision. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The strong coupling constant is determined over the transverse momentum range 50 < p(T)< 145 GeV. Using perturbative QCD calculations to order O(alpha(3)(s)) combined with O(alpha(4)(s)) contributions from threshold corrections, we obtain alpha(s)(M-Z)=0.1161(-0.0048)(+0.0041). • We extract the total width of the top quark, Gamma(t), from the partial decay width Gamma(t -> Wb) measured using the t-channel cross section for single top-quark production and from the branching fraction B(t -> Wb) measured in t (t) over bar t events using up to 2.3 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 Collaboration at the Tevatron p (p) over bar Collider. The result is Gamma(t) = 1.99(-0.55)(+0.69) GeV, which translates to a top-quark lifetime of tau(t) = (3.3-(+1.3)(0.9)) x 10(-25) s. Assuming a high mass fourth generation b' quark and unitarity of the four-generation quark-mixing matrix, we set the first upper limit on vertical bar V-tb'vertical bar < 0.63 at 95% C.L.

    • We present a direct measurement of the mass difference between top and antitop quarks (Delta m) in lepton + jets t (t) over bar final states using the "matrix element" method. The purity of the lepton + jets sample is enhanced for t (t) over bar events by identifying at least one of the jets as originating from a b quark. The analyzed data correspond to 3.6 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV acquired by D0 in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The combination of the e + jets and mu + jets channels yields Delta m = 0.8 +/- 1.8(stat) +/- 0.5(syst) GeV, which is in agreement with the standard model expectation of no mass difference.

    • We report the first direct observation of the strange b baryon Xi(-)(b)(Xi) over bar (+)(b)). We reconstruct the decay Xi(-)(b)-->J/psi Xi(-), with J/psi-->mu(+)mu(-), and Xi(-)-->Lambda pi(-)-->p pi(-)pi(-) in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV. Using 1.3 fb(-1) of data collected by the D0 detector, we observe 15.2 +/- 4.4(stat)(-0.4)(+1.9)(syst) Xi(-)(b) candidates at a mass of 5.774 +/- 0.011(stat) +/- 0.015(syst) GeV. The significance of the observed signal is 5.5 sigma, equivalent to a probability of 3.3 x 10(-8) of it arising from a background fluctuation. Normalizing to the decay Lambda(b)-->J/psi Lambda, we measure the relative rate sigma(Xi(-)(b))xB(Xi(-)(b)-->J/psi Xi)/ sigma(Lambda(b))xB(Lambda(b)-->J/psi Lambda) = 0.28 +/- 0.09(stat)(-0.08)(+0.09)(syst).

    • We have used a sample of gamma + 3 jets events collected by the D0 experiment with an integrated luminosity of about 1 fb(-1) to determine the fraction of events with double parton scattering (f(DP)) in a single p (p) over bar collision at root s = 1.96 TeV. The DP fraction and effective cross section (sigma(eff)), a process-independent scale parameter related to the parton density inside the nucleon, are measured in three intervals of the second (ordered in p(T)) jet transverse momentum p(T)(jet2) within the range 15 <= p(T)(jet2) <= 30 GeV. In this range, f(DP) varies between 0.23 <= f(DP) <= 0.47, while sigma(eff) has the average value sigma(ave)(eff) = 16.4 +/- 0.3(stat) +/- 2.3(syst) mb.

    • The D0 Collaboration presents first evidence for the production of single top quarks at the Fermilab Tevatron < p(p)over bar > collider. Using a 0.9 fb(-1) dataset, we apply a multivariate analysis to separate signal from background and measure sigma(< p(p)over bar >-> tb+X,tqb+X)=4.9 +/- 1.4 pb. The probability to measure a cross section at this value or higher in the absence of a signal is 0.035%, corresponding to a 3.4 standard deviation significance. • We present a measurement of the ratio of events with correlated t and (t) over bar spins to the total number of t (t) over bar events. This ratio f is evaluated using a matrix-element-based approach in 729 t (t) over bar candidate events with a single lepton l (electron or muon) and at least four jets. The analyzed p (p) over bar collisions data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5: 3 fb(-1) and were collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider operating at a center-of-mass energy root s = 1.96 TeV. Combining this result with a recent measurement of f in dileptonic final states, we find f in agreement with the standard model. In addition, the combination provides evidence for the presence of spin correlation in t (t) over bar events with a significance of more than 3 standard deviations.

    • We present a measurement of forward-backward asymmetry in top quark-antiquark production in proton-antiproton collisions in the final state containing a lepton and at least four jets. Using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb(-1), collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, we measure the t (t) over bar forward-backward asymmetry to be (9.2 +/- 3.7)% at the reconstruction level. When corrected for detector acceptance and resolution, the asymmetry is found to be (19.6 +/- 6.5)%. We also measure a corrected asymmetry based on the lepton from a top quark decay, found to be (15.2 +/- 4.0)%. The results are compared to predictions based on the next-to-leading-order QCD generator MC@NLO. The sensitivity of the measured and predicted asymmetries to the modeling of gluon radiation is discussed.

    • We present evidence for diffractive exclusive dijet production with an invariant dijet mass greater than 100 GeV in data collected with the DO experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. A discriminant based on calorimeter information is used to measure a significant number of events with little energy (typically less than 10 GeV) outside the dijet system, consistent with the diffractive exclusive dijet production topology. The probability for these events to be explained by other dijet production processes is 2 x 10(-6), corresponding to a 4.7 standard deviation significance.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We present an improved determination of the total width of the top quark, Gamma(t), using 5.4 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 Collaboration at the Tevatron p (p) over bar Collider. The total width Gamma(t) is extracted from the partial decay width Gamma(t -> Wb) and the branching fraction B(t -> Wb). Gamma(t -> Wb) is obtained from the t-channel single top-quark production cross section and B(t -> Wb) is measured in t (t) over bar events. For a top mass of 172.5 GeV, the resulting width is Gamma(t) = 2.00(-0.43)(+0.47) GeV. This translates to a top-quark lifetime of tau(t) = (3.29(-0.63)(+0.90)) x 10(-25) s. We also extract an improved direct limit on the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark-mixing matrix element 0.81 < vertical bar V-tb vertical bar <= 1 at 95% C.L. and a limit of vertical bar V-tb'vertical bar < 0.59 for a high-mass fourth-generation bottom quark assuming unitarity of the fourth-generation quark-mixing matrix.

    • We determine the fraction of t (t) over bar events with spin correlation, assuming that the spin of the top quark is either correlated with the spin of the top antiquark as predicted by the standard model or is uncorrelated. For the first time we use a matrix-element-based approach to study t (t) over bar spin correlation. We use t (t) over bar -> W(+)bW(-)(b) over bar -> l(+)nu bl(-)(nu) over bar(b) over bar final states produced in p (p) over bar collisions at a center- of- mass energy root s = 1: 96 TeV, where l denotes an electron or a muon. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 5: 4 fb(-1) and were collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The result agrees with the standard model prediction. We exclude the hypothesis that the spins of the t (t) over bar are uncorrelated at the 97.7% C.L.

    • We present an updated measurement of the anomalous like-sign dimuon charge asymmetry A(sl)(b) for semileptonic b-hadron decays in 9.0 fb(-1) of p (p) over bar collisions recorded with the D0 detector at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 1.96 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. This result differs by 3.9 standard deviations from the prediction of the standard model and provides evidence for anomalously large CP violation in semileptonic neutral B decay. The dependence of the asymmetry on the muon impact parameter is consistent with the hypothesis that it originates from semileptonic b-hadron decays.

    • The process p (p) over bar -> gamma + jet + X is studied using 1.0 fb(-1) of data collected by the DO detector at the Fermilab Tevatron p (p) over bar collider at a center-of-mass energy root s = 1.96 TeV. Photons are reconstructed in the central rapidity region vertical bar y(gamma)vertical bar < 1.0 with transverse momenta in the range 30 < p(T)(gamma) < 400 GeV while jets are reconstructed in either the central vertical bar y(jet)vertical bar < 0.8 or forward 1.5 < vertical bar y(jet)vertical bar < 2.5 rapidity intervals with P-T(jet) > 15 GeV. The differential cross section d(3 sigma)/dp(T)(gamma) dy(gamma) dy(jet) is measured as a function of p(T)(gamma) in four regions, differing by the relative orientations of the photon and the jet in rapidity. Ratios between the differential cross sections in each region are also presented. Next-to-leading order QCD predictions using different parameterizations of parton distribution functions and theoretical scale choices are compared to the data. The predictions do not simultaneously describe the measured normalization and p(T)(gamma) dependence of the cross section in the four measured regions.
