  • Collaboration, reinvented tools and specialist knowledge : Communication professionals’ experiences of global health crisis management
  • 2024
  • In: Discourse & Communication. - : Sage Publications. - 1750-4813 .- 1750-4821.
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Communication professionals have a paramount role in global crisis. What did they learn during the covid pandemic that could be used in future global crisis? The aim of this article is to identify and analyze strategy changes among communicators in municipalities and how their conceptions of communicated knowledge transformed during the pandemic. Retrospective interviews and textual material are analyzed with a framework of Mediated Discourse Analysis in combination with Legitimation Code Theory. The analysis shows that the work of the communicators was characterized by collaboration with other professional groups and the civil society, and that the complexity and important time aspects during this crisis gave birth to semi-new, reinvented, discursive tools in the shape of text genres. The communicators’ conceived relevant knowledge as concept-driven and developed the conception that conveyance of knowledge should be thoroughly planned in a way that takes complexity into account.

  • Doing interdisciplinarity in teacher education : Resources for learning through writing in two educational programmes
  • 2017
  • In: Education Inquiry. - : Informa UK Limited. - 2000-4508. ; 8:4, s. 299-317
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • With a focus on resources for learning through writing, this paper compares the interdisciplinary framings of two teacher education programmes. What are the implications of these framings and resources for students’ possibilities when they write independent projects/bachelor theses? The paper presents a case study with data (interviews, texts, observations) from two different teacher education programmes. The conceptual framework stems from the Academic Literacies approach. The analysis shows that one of the programmes shapes interdisciplinarity by a “block approach” that allows students to work independently, while the other is shaped as a “bridging approach” with tight collaboration between students and tutors. The two educational programmes apply the same national regulating documents in different ways, thus creating different possibilities for students to learn and write as “independent” or “collaborative” students, respectively. The results contribute to a discussion of higher education structure and the role of writing within it.

  • Appropriering av fackkunskap - förutsättning för ett "godkänt" akademiskt skrivande?
  • 2009
  • In: Skriving i kunnskapssamfunnet. - Trondheim : Tapir Akademisk Forlag. - 9788251924993 ; , s. 143-160
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2013
  • In: Sakprosa. - : University of Oslo Library. - 1502-6000 .- 1891-5108. ; 5:2, s. 1-34
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • By applying concepts from Mediated Discourse Analysis (MDA, Scollon & Scollon 2004), this article contributes to the field of applied linguistics theoretically and empirically. The theoretical issue is the problematization raised by e.g. Karlsson (2010) on how to regard the text–“context” relationship. The empirical contribution concerns our knowledge about how texts are used in professional communication. The data consists of observations of company lawyers’ work, interviews, a focus group, a few texts and feedback from lawyers on preliminary findings. The results show that the writing of contracts is a predominant social practice (or practice of nexus, as several practices are included in this) for company lawyers; that this practice includes anticipating and avoiding problems for the company; and how this practise is locally performed together with other professional representatives. MDA is shown i.e. to include concepts for analysing actors dealing with complexity out of the immediate interaction.

  • From percentage to prediction : University students meeting a parallel language of visuals and numerals
  • 2011
  • In: Ibérica. - 1139-7241 .- 2340-2784. ; :22, s. 123-139
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A less-frequently discussed parallel-linguistic issue is the parallel language of visuals and numerals: the diagrams, tables, models, mathematical signs and different symbols that students have to deal with in their reading and writing. Texts are multimodal, that is they are constructed with visual objects and different sign systems as well as writing. For new students, it can be difficult to grasp how visuals and numerals can have different meanings in different contexts, such as academic disciplines. For teachers, the disciplinary use of the visuals and numerals is often so ingrained that they may have difficulty seeing the problems that students face. Drawing on the theoretical framework of social semiotics and the neo-Vygotskian perspective, this article shows how new students of economics in Sweden encounter a multimodal academic literacy. The article also discusses some of the difficulties relating to this situation and arguesfor a raised awareness among teachers in order to scaffold students intoacademic, visual literacies.

  • ”I don’t know if I can share this.” : Agency and sociomateriality in digital text sharing of business communication
  • 2021
  • In: Journal of Digital Social Research (JDSR). - : DIGSUM. - 2003-1998. ; 3:3, s. 1-31
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In modern business organizations, digital practices are enacted daily, often when sharing texts, which is crucial for knowledge management. How professionals experience digital text sharing is an issue that is often overlooked. In this paper, we focus on a relatively new aspect of business digital literacy: the literacy practice of digital text sharing in workplaces. Our analysis was conducted on ethnographic data from business organizations. The results show that sociomaterial aspects are enacted by professionals by discussing 1) the protection of borders of their own and other organizations, and 2) the status and digital location of texts. The analysis highlights two means of expressing agency that indicate conflicting norms: joking and showing strong emotions. The study places the hitherto backgrounded literacy practice of digital text sharing in workplaces in the foreground, proposes methods for studying this phenomenon, and highlights issues concerning digital text sharing that should be addressed by organizations.

  • In: Applied Linguistics Review. - : Walter de Gruyter GmbH. - 1868-6303 .- 1868-6311. ; 14:4, s. 799-822
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In the communications of modern organizations, text sharing and knowledge management are mainly digital. The digital systems that frame many types of communication consist of, e.g., intranets and document sharing software that are occasionally exchanged for new systems. Employees have to adjust to modified routines and learn new systems, and management has to make decisions about digital systems and how these are to be integrated with work processes and knowledge management. In this article, we contribute to research on work-life literacies by highlighting the increasingly frequent issue of digital text sharing in modern workplaces through the study of commercial companies, mainly through ethnographic observations and interviews. The theoretical framework comes from New Literacy Studies where literacy practices, i.e., common patterns of using reading and writing, form a key concept. Moreover, the sociolinguistic concept of metadiscourse is applied in order to uncover the reflexive orientation of participating professionals towards digital text sharing. The results show that these professionals relate the combination of digital text sharing and technological and organizational change to problems, obstacles and potential risks; ambitions of enhancing digital text sharing may exclude certain groups, and changes in digital text sharing systems per se may cause professionals to lose control. These risks are often associated with access to information: a person who cannot access information in their organization has a lower degree of agency or power over their situation. The results are discussed in light of theories concerning modern work life from New Literacy Studies.

    • Translation and interpreting in the workplace are not always performed by translationprofessionals in planned situations. In this article, collective ad hoc-translation/interpreting by non-translators in a workplace meeting is analyzed. The analysis gives an example of ad hoc-translation that take place in work life situations: there are no distinct divisions between different roles, or between source text and target text, and there are no clear borders between translation and interpreting, since both written texts and verbal interaction are present. The study confirms recent problematizations of conceptions of translation and interpreting in real life situations and highlights the role of digital tools in non-professional workplace translation.

  • Studenters skrivande i två kunskapsbyggande miljöer
  • 2004
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The subject of this study is student writing in its institutional setting, examining students’ texts, professional discourse and educational practices. Fieldwork for the study was conducted at the departments of History and Economics of Stockholm University. The general aim of the study is to increase our understanding of the relationships between student writing, educational settings and professional discourse. The theoretical framework is the sociocultural approach as outlined by Wertsch from Bakhtin and Vygotsky, and applied on writing research by above all Dysthe. The theoretical-methodological attempts are an operationalisation of the concept of dialogicity in different aspects and an application of the concept of mediational means at the linguistic level of text type or speech act.The type of dialogicity and epistemology of a setting is shown to have major influences on students’ writing. The epistemology of economics is defined as rationalistic, and that of history as critical-pluralistic. In economics, linear logical reasoning with clear-cut solutions is a key mediational means, while reasoning with a multitude of perspectives is given precedence in history. Students adjust their texts to the kind of dialogicity in the setting. However, in interviews, some students, mainly in economics, exhibit a resistance to the epistemology and mediational means of their discipline. This resistance seems not to influence their texts, but in all probability the depth of their learning. In addition, the socialisation seems to be a more prolonged process in economics. The reasons may be that the mediational means have a weak connection to students’ previous knowledge and that they are not collectively applied in economics to the same extent as in history. Thus, a pedagogical conclusion is that the important mediational means of a discipline should be collectively applied during study. Moreover, student writing should be considered in relation to students’ previous knowledge, their course of study and their future professional activity.

  • 2022
  • In: Språk och stil. - : Uppsala University. - 1101-1165 .- 2002-4010. ; 32, s. 5-37
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Calls have been raised for more research on the use of texts and other types of in real-life communicationin real-life situations, which are often complex and hybrid. This study is based on data from a meeting at a hospital ward where a Key Account Manager from a pharmaceutical business informs staff about a medical product during their lunch hour. Mediated discourse analysis is applied to map the mediating trajectories of the texts used in the meeting and to reveal the role of people in this mediation. The analysis shows that the situation can be regarded as a mediation of a discourse concerning the marketing of medical products and of actual legaltexts, stating that pharmaceutical businesses cannot offer doctors values such as expensive dinners. Besides a PowerPoint document, other material resources and practices such as a modest meal contribute to the situation. In the texts, a medical-scientific discourse, a commercial discourse and an administrative discourse are mixed. Doctors’ actions of prescribing the productare anticipated by the Key Account Manager’s actions of 1) constructing an ‘historical body’ of trust, 2) emphasizing certain textual messages at the same time and offering these texts in adurable material form. This manner of simultaneous and/or durable material forms is introduced as discursive layering. The study presents an empirical case of how ‘big discourses’ are mediated into local actions which, in turn, are targeted to affect future actions.
