  • En historisk studie av pseudosamordning: konstruktionen gå och V i svenskan

  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article studies a special type of verbal coordination in Swedish, pseudocoordination, which involves two verbs or verb phrases typically combined with och ‘and’. Although it consists of two verbs with a conjunction between them, pseudocoordination in many ways behaves like a subordinating complex-predicate construction. In the literature, pseudocoordination is treated more or less explicitly as a unitary phenomenon, but previous diachronic studies of some types of pseudocoordination point in slightly different directions regarding the origin of pseudocoordinations with different first verbs. It has been claimed that they originate in (canonical) verbal coordinations, but it has also been claimed that they are originally hypotactic structures in which the conjunction is a covert infinitival marker (both are typically pronounced in the same way today). To the best of our knowledge, the gå och V ‘walk/go and V’ construction has not previously been studied both diachronically and corpus-based. By examining gå och V in historical corpora, we therefore add to the historical knowledge of pseudocoordination with gå in Swedish. The gå och V construction is particularly interesting since it has multiple meanings and since it, unlike the bulk of Swedish pseudocoordinations, also has subordination counterparts in Modern Swedish.

  • Matches and mismatches in Swedish gå och V 'go/walk and V'. An exemplar-based perspective
  • 2018
  • In: Constructions and Frames. - : John Benjamins Publishing Company. - 1876-1933 .- 1876-1941. ; 10:2, s. 147-177
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article studies the pseudo-coordination [ga 'go/walk och 'and' V]. The construction has several meanings and it also has subordination counterparts in Modern Swedish, unlike most Swedish pseudo-coordinations. Our diachronic study shows that [ga och V] cannot readily be reduced to the verbs in isolation and that synchronic lexicocentric perspectives based on syntactic (re)configurations cannot capture the constructional meaning such as the assumed inference of 'surprise' or 'unexpectedness. We argue that a detailed analysis of the historical development makes the picture clearer. In the development of [ga och V], item-based analogy continuously facilitates new verbs in the V slot. At a certain stage, there is a mismatch between the agentivity of the construction and the non-agentivity of events denoted by the second verb. This mismatch is resolved by the override principle that forces non-agentive verbs to be interpreted agentively and promote a more abstract and lexicalized version of the construction. The exemplar-based view to constructions proposed by Bybee (2010, 2013) seems favorable, since frequent exemplars of [ga och V] allow for redundant or marginal features to serve as the model for novel expansions of the construction.

  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper studies the representation of more or less novel constructional types in five Swedish dictionaries of different types and, to a certain extent, different ages. Based on a number of constructional types, the aim is to find out which of them have been entered in the dictionaries and how the types are treated from a normative and a descriptive point of view. The study also discusses the normative role of the contemporary dictionary in relation to the constructional types.

  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The article discusses lexicographic perspectives of the Swedish plural with the suffix -s. Traditionally, plural nouns ending in -s, for example avokados ‘avocados’, are considered colloquial speech; the formal way of writing the plural in question is avokador or avokadoer. However, since the Swedish Academy grammar included a noun declension indicating plurals with the suffix -s, plural with -s seems to have become more accepted, at least among language planners.

  • En pluraktionell progressivmarkör? Hålla på att jämförd med hålla på och
  • 2013
  • In: Språk och stil. - 1101-1165 .- 2002-4010. ; 23, s. 175-204
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The article concentrates on two Swedish verbal constructions: hålla på att + infinite verb and hålla på och + finite verb. Both are considered progressive markers in the literature, and the difference between them is considered primarily stylistic (the former is neutral whereas the latter is judged asinformal). The aim of the article is to argue that there is more to the difference. It is claimed that sentences with hålla på och constructions often have pluractional meaning, i.e., express some sort of iteration of the (sub)events. This makes the status of hålla på och as a “genuine” progressive marker questionable. Moreover, the article discusses some implications of tense on telicity and event structure.

  • Finding gaps in semantic descriptions. Visualisation of the cross-reference network in a Swedish monolingual dictionary
  • 2021

  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Providing lexical information in dictionary entries by cross-referencing between semantically related headwords is very important, both from a reception-oriented and a production-oriented perspective. This study presents a survey of cross-references in a comprehensive monolingual dictionary of Swedish. It discusses cross-referencing in dictionaries in general as well as in the Swedish dictionary, focusing on the following four types of paradigmatic cross-references: SEE, COMPARE, SYNONYM, and OPPOSITE. By using data-visualisation software, the semantic network in the dictionary is overviewed in a new way. Furthermore, errors, gaps as well as other areas of improvement in the dictionary related to cross-referencing are discovered. Moreover, the relationships between the existing cross-references, how they are introduced in the dictionary and the dictionary's intended target groups are addressed. The study also reveals that the traditional lexicographic policies of the dictionary need to be adjusted to take advantage of the transition from paper to electronic publication

  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this article, we discuss and give examples of how word-form frequency information derived from existing corpora statistics can be used to improve dictionary content. The frequency information is used in combination with rule-based morphological data based on derivational and inflectional information from the Swedish Morphological Database compiled at the University of Gothenburg, and the lexical database owned by the Swedish Academy. The method currently used in the ongoing project for updating the monolingual Contemporary Dictionary of the Swedish Academy is described, and some examples of dictionary entries identified as candidates for update based on frequency measures are given. Different aspects of morphological dictionary content are discussed and highlighted by comparison between the above-mentioned definition dictionary and a learner’s dictionary. The role of headword or lemma as well as cross-referencing methods in a digital dictionary as compared to a printed dictionary is also discussed. Finally, a few examples of suggested modifications and enhancements are given.

  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study provides a discussion of the development of subjective meaning associated with the motion-verb pseudocoordination gå och V ‘go/walk and V’ and the posture-verb pseudocoordination sitta och V ‘sit and V’, using historical and present-day linguistic data. It is claimed that an interpretation in terms of item-based analogy and entrenchment of frequent meaning clusters is the most plausible analysis for the development of subjective (and pejorative) meaning associated with gå och V. The study of sitta och V is preliminary, but the results indicate that the subjective meaning of this construction is less entrenched that that of the gå och V construction and that the subjective overtone of subjectivity may be a result of the combination of the social/cultural meaning of the posture and certain intrinsically pejorative verbs, together with certain locatives.

  • Progressive constructions in Swedish
  • 2015
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This thesis aims to provide new insights into the semantic properties of some progressive constructions in Swedish and to provide better understanding of aspect in Swedish. The five included studies present analyses of previously understudied as well as more familiar progressive constructions, based on authentic language data. Constructions with a verb followed by a verbal present participle, e.g. försvinna skrikande ‘disappear screaming’, are analyzed in the first study, and they are labeled progressive participial. It is shown that the verb and the participle, taken together as a construction in a construction-grammar sense, yield progressive reading. More familiar constructions, standardly considered progressive in the literature, are studied in the remaining papers, primarily from a two-componential theory of aspect. The second study analyzes the constructions hålla på att ‘hold on to’ + infinitive verb and hålla på och ‘hold on and’ + finite verb. While the difference between them is usually taken to be primarily stylistic, it is shown that only hålla på att is a progressive marker in a canonical sense. Posture-verb pseudocoordinations, e.g. sitta ‘sit’/stå ‘stand’/ligga ‘lie’ + och ‘and’ + finite verb, are analyzed in the third study. It is shown that posture-verb pseudocoordinations are not progressive like e.g. hålla på att but instead locative and, in some cases, episodic. The fourth study returns to the hålla på construction, primarily assessing the pseudocoordinative hålla på och variant in detail, noting its restrictions in terms of compatibility with certain types of VP. It is shown that hålla på och does not combine with VPs with homogeneous internal structure, and a pluractional analysis is proposed instead. Finally, as a way to find out the nature of hålla på att constructions, the fifth study investigates constructions of the type from the perspectives of e.g. finiteness and aspect.

  • 2009
  • In: Språk och stil. - 1101-1165. ; 19, s. 172-201
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The article focuses on progressive participial constructions, viz. structures with the form verb + verbal present participle. To date, such constructions have received little attention in grammatical descriptions of Swedish. On the basis of empirical data, the study provides a characterization of progressive participial constructions within the framework of Construction Grammar. The constructions are split up into three categories: directive participial constructions, e.g. komma gående ‘come walking’, locative participial constructions, e.g. bli sittande ‘be(come) sitting’, and additive participial constructions, e.g. springa gråtande ‘run crying’. The findings suggest that the three types of progressive participial constructions comprise a network of rather systematic markers of progressive aspect in Swedish. In line with the constructional perspective, analysis of the data suggests that the encoding of progressive meaning is a constructional rather than a lexical property.

  • Valens- eller konstruktionsuppgifter: redovisningar av aspektuella konstruktioner i några svenska ordböcker och i en dansk
  • 2017
  • In: LexicoNordica. - 0805-2735. ; 24, s. 153-172
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article studies how Swedish aspectual constructions are represented in two dictionaries (Svensk ordbok utgiven av Svenska Akademien and Svenskt språkbruk. Ordbok över konstruktioner och fraser). Representations of Danish counterparts in Den Danske Ordbog are also examined. Aspectual constructions are sometimes difficult to fit into valency patterns, which is why the study focuses on valency, or constructional, information. The study shows that the studied dictionaries differ a good deal in terms of how they treat aspectual constructions. It is proposed that aspectual constructions could benefit from also being described at the constructional level.

  • Posture, location, and activity in Mainland Scandinavian pseudocoordinations
  • 2018
  • In: CogniTextes. - : OpenEdition. - 1958-5322. ; 18
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article is a corpus-based study of the semantics of pseudocoordination with posture verbs meaning ‘lie’, ‘sit’, and ‘stand’ in the Mainland Scandinavian languages (i.e. Danish, Norwegian, and Swedish). An example is Danish Jeg sidder og læser ‘I am reading’, literally ‘I sit and read’. While many previous studies of posture verb pseudocoordination have focused on the semantic bleaching and grammaticalization of posture verbs, recent research has shown that such developments have so far been very limited and have argued that a proper understanding of posture verb pseudocoordination needs to be sought in the context of pseudocoordination in general, taking into account the role of location. Drawing on frame semantics, the present study shows how the notion of ‘facilitation’ can be applied to shed light on the role of posture: stability of posture at a location for a certain duration facilitates the activity referred to with the last part of the coordination. Based on large data sets, distinctive collexemes are found for posture verbs, i.e. verb collocations showing how each posture facilitates a distinct set of activities. Further, a few collexemes revealing posture verb bleaching are discovered, showing how aspectual grammaticalization may develop.
