  • Äldre rödgods från Studentholmen i Uppsala - en undersökning av proveniens genom pXRF- och ICP-analys
  • 2024
  • In: META Historiskarkeologisk tidskrift. - 2002-0406. ; 2024, s. 61-78
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The assemblage of pottery from Studentholmen, excavated by Knut Stjerna in 1907, contains one of the largest and most varied collections of medieval ledglazed redwares from the medieval town of Uppsala. Previous have pointed to the similarities in form and technology with the larger productions centers in western Europe as well as to the possibilities that some of the less elaborately decorated pitchers and jugs might be locally produced. A study, aimed at establishing the provenance of the material by using handheld XRF for a non-destructive screening of the larger material and following ICP-analysis from identified and selected groups have been conducted in 2023. The study shows that the main centers for production of the vessels in Studentholmen where northern Germany and Netherlands. Further the study shows methodological potential for cost effective analyses of large assemblages of early redwares in the future, thus making more materials in museum collections available for much needed research

  • The Maderö wreck : a ship loaded with bricks from Lübeck sunk in the Stockholm Archipelago in the late 15th century
  • 2024
  • In: International Journal of Nautical Archaeology. - 1057-2414 .- 1095-9270.
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Maderö wreck was discovered in the 1960s in the Stockholm Archipelago, Sweden. An archaeological investigation undertaken in 2022 included the inspection and documentation of visible ship parts, sampling for dendrochronological analysis and sampling for ICP analysis from the brick cargo. The results show that the wood originates from the Baltic Sea area and was felled after 1467, while the clay for the brick originates from the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern area. The ship's technical analysis shows that it is a large clinker-built merchant ship. Traces of iron on a recovered stone shot indicate that the ship was armed when it sank.

  • Pacemaker Implants and Their Influence on the Daily Life of Patients with Dementia with Lewy Bodies : A Qualitative Case Study
  • 2023
  • In: Neurology and Therapy. - 2193-8253. ; 12:4, s. 1359-1373
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • INTRODUCTION: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is an incurable form of dementia associated with detriments to the daily life of patients and carers from their family. Symptoms of orthostatic hypotension, syncope, and falls are supportive of DLB diagnosis. These symptoms may also be present among people with sick sinus syndrome (SSS), and subsequent pacemaker treatment to manage bradyarrhythmia is associated with improved cognitive function. The prevalence of SSS seems to be higher among people with underlying Lewy body pathology compared to the general age-matched population (5.2% vs. 0.17%). To our knowledge, how people with DLB and their family carers may experience pacemaker treatment to manage bradyarrhythmia has not been previously reported. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore how people with DLB experience daily life following a pacemaker implant to manage associated symptoms of bradyarrhythmia.METHODS: A qualitative case study design was used. Two men with DLB and their spouse carers were repeatedly interviewed as a dyad within 1 year following implant of a dual-chamber rate-adaptive (DDD-CLS) pacemaker to manage SSS in the men. Content analysis was used to assess the qualitative interview data collected.RESULTS: Three categories emerged: (1) gaining control, (2) maintaining a social life, and (3) being influenced by concurrent diseases. Less syncope/falls and remote pacemaker monitoring increased a sense of control in everyday life, while perceived physical and/or cognitive improvements influenced social participation. The men were still affected by concurrent diseases, which continuously influenced each couple's daily life.CONCLUSION: Identifying and managing concurrent bradyarrhythmia through a pacemaker implant could improve well-being for people with DLB.

  • Similar survival 15 years after coronary artery surgery irrespective of left main stem stenosis
  • 2013
  • In: Scandinavian Cardiovascular Journal. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1401-7431 .- 1651-2006 .- 1651-2510. ; 47:1, s. 42-49
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Objectives. To evaluate 15-year survival after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in relation to grade left main stenosis (LMS) and right coronary artery (RCA) obstruction. Design. Coronary angiographic findings were prospectively collected in 977 patients who had CABG for stable angina during 1994-1995 and were included in the Swedish Coronary Revascularization - Swedish Council of Technology Assessment study. Results. Significant LMS was present in one fifth of the patients and significant RCA obstruction was found in 61% of those with LMS and in 68% of patients without LMS. The patients were categorized as no LMS (Group I), LMS without RCA obstruction (Group II) or significant LMS with significant right coronary artery (RCA) obstruction (Group III). Early mortality did not differ in the three groups and was 1.2, 1.2% and 0.8% in group I, II and III, respectively. Corresponding survival at 15 years was similar 51%, 47% and 47%, respectively. In multivariable analysis older age, smoking, severe angina, positive stress test, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and ejection fraction <50% were risk factors for death at 15 years. Conclusions. Death 15 years after CABG correlated to clinical variables but was not predicted from presence of LMS with or without significant associated RCA obstruction.

  • Gråborg och S:t Knuts kapell : en berättelse i tid och rum baserad på en studie av det keramiska materialet
  • 2008
  • In: Gråborg på Öland : om en borg, ett kapell och en by. - 9789174023800 ; , s. 67-80
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • Clay, Burial Urns, and Social Distinction in Late Bronze Age Southern Scandinavia
  • 2020
  • In: Knut Ivar Austvoll, Marianne Hem Eriksen, Per Ditlef Fredriksen, Anne Lene Melheim, Lisbeth Prøsch-Danielsen and Lisbeth Skogstrand (eds.), Contrasts of the Nordic Bronze Age. Essays in Honour of Christopher Prescott. - Turnhout : Brepols Publishers. - 9782503588773 ; , s. 233-246
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In recent years, we have witnessed a tremendous increase in geochemical, biochemical, and biomolecular analyses on human remains that have given rise to new perspectives and interpretations on society, mobility, and interaction in prehistory (see below). The European Bronze Age seems increasingly to have been a dynamic world characterized by complex patterns of interaction at a local/micro-level as well as on a macro/continental scale. This work strives to demonstrate that there is potential for this complexity to be reflected in materials such as pottery, which has had a relatively marginal role in recent discourses about Bronze Age societies in Northern Europe. As we aim to show here, geochemical analyses of pottery can be used to add new layers of information to our knowledge about the period. The main objective of this paper is to publish the results of recent geochemical analyses conducted on a selected number of burial urns and ceramic grave goods from the Nordic Late Bronze Age burial ground of Simris 2 (see Stjernquist 1961). The analyses were carried out with the primary aim of determining the local or non-local origin of the raw materials used in the manufacture of the sampled items. As a secondary objective, our results are contrasted with the results of petrographic studies on the ceramic material from the Gualöv burial ground dated to Periods IV–V of the Nordic Bronze Age. Finally, this study demonstrates the potential that in-depth studies of ceramic production from southern Scandinavia may have for a deeper and more nuanced understanding of Late Bronze Age societies.

  • Tracing Trade Routes: Examining the Cargo of the 15th-Century Skaftö Wreck
  • 2022
  • In: International Journal of Nautical Archaeology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1057-2414 .- 1095-9270. ; 51:1, s. 112-144
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Skaftö wreck of c.1440, situated north of Gothenburg, Sweden, was investigated between the years 2005 and 2009. Investigations revealed a variety of cargoes, such as copper and speiss ingots, barrels with lime and tar, bricks and roof tiles, and oak timber in the form of planks and boards. In order to identify the different cargo types found on the wreck, and, possibly, establish their geographical origin, a variety of analytical methods have been utilized. The present study accounts for the archaeological investigations of the cargo and for the analyses that have been conducted to date. Results are compared to and discussed in relation to other contemporaneous source material, both historical and archaeological. Based on this examination, it is concluded that the vessel was heading from the southeastern corner of the Baltic Sea, most likely Danzig (Gdańsk), aiming for the Western European market, possibly Bruges.
