    • High-entropy alloys (HEAs) composed of multiple-principal elements with (nearly) equimolar ratio establish a new conceptual framework for alloy design and hold a promise for extensive applications in industry, akin to the controlled expansion alloys (CEAs), such as Invar alloys. Spontaneously, one question emerges - would it be possible to synthesize a novel class of alloys combining the virtues of both CEAs and HEAs? Here, we report the pressure-induced magnetovolume effect in the body-centered-cubic CoCrFeAl HEA coupled with magnetic phase transitions from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic, and to non-magnetic states, originating from the successive collapses of local magnetic moments of Co and Fe. The observed magnetovolume anomalies, occurring in a progressive way, tailor appreciably the coefficient of thermal expansion of CoCrFeAl. These results further strengthen HEAs' anticipated potential for designing multifunctional materials in virtue of their multiple outstanding properties, and reveal possible routes for their future synthesis.

    • Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) spectroscopy is a powerful tool for studying fundamental processes in plasmas as well as for spectral characterization of EUV light sources and EUV optics. However, a simultaneous measurement covering a broadband spectral range is difficult to realize. Here, we propose a method for interferometric broadband Fourier spectroscopy connecting soft x ray and visible spectral ranges with moderate spectral resolution. We present an analytical model to recover the spectrum from a double-slit interferogram. We apply our model for spectral characterization of a partially coherent gas-discharge EUV light source operated with different gases in the spectral range between 10 and 110 nm wavelengths. Our approach allows a simple and fast broadband spectroscopy with fully or partially spatially coherent light sources, for instance, to characterize out-of-band radiation in EUV lithography applications.

    • We report the first measurement of the near oxygen K-edge auger spectrum of the glycine molecule. Our work employed an x-ray free electron laser as the photon source operated with input photon energies tunable between 527 and 547 eV. Complete electron spectra were recorded at each photon energy in the tuning range, revealing resonant and non-resonant auger structures. Finally ab initio theoretical predictions are compared with the measured above the edge auger spectrum and an assignment of auger decay channels is performed.

  • Hydrogen bond effects in multimode nuclear dynamics of acetic acid observed via resonant x-ray scattering

    • A theoretical and experimental study of the gas phase and liquid acetic acid based on resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectroscopy is presented. We combine and compare different levels of theory for an isolated molecule for a comprehensive analysis, including electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom. The excitation energy scan over the oxygen K-edge absorption reveals nuclear dynamic effects in the core-excited and final electronic states. The theoretical simulations for the monomer and two different forms of the dimer are compared against high-resolution experimental data for pure liquid acetic acid. We show that the theoretical model based on a dimer describes the hydrogen bond formation in the liquid phase well and that this bond formation sufficiently alters the RIXS spectra, allowing us to trace these effects directly from the experiment. Multimode vibrational dynamics is accounted for in our simulations by using a hybrid time-dependent stationary approach for the quantum nuclear wave packet simulations, showing the important role it plays in RIXS.

  • Vibrational resonant inelastic X-ray scattering in liquid acetic acid : a ruler for molecular chain lengths

    • Quenching of vibrational excitations in resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra of liquid acetic acid is observed. At the oxygen core resonance associated with localized excitations at the O-H bond, the spectra lack the typical progression of vibrational excitations observed in RIXS spectra of comparable systems. We interpret this phenomenon as due to strong rehybridization of the unoccupied molecular orbitals as a result of hydrogen bonding, which however cannot be observed in x-ray absorption but only by means of RIXS. This allows us to address the molecular structure of the liquid, and to determine a lower limit for the average molecular chain length.
