  • Musicological relations between France and Sweden at the beginning of the 20th century
  • 2017
  • In: Revue de musicologie (Paris). - : EDITIONS TRANSATLANTIQUES. - 0035-1601 .- 1958-5632. ; 103:2, s. 641-647
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Societe franeaise de musicologie and its Swedish counterpart, Svenska samfundet for musikforskning, were created in 1917 and 1919, respectively, as national extensions of the earlier Internationale Musikgesellschaft. Both of these new societies were marked by a spirit of internationalism, which therefore made it perfectly natural that they should communicate with each other. Accordingly, in the first number of Svensk tidskrift for musikforskning, the new Swedish musicological review that began publication in 1919-1920, we find summaries in French of all the articles, and, in a short introductory text, praise for French contributions to the enhancement of the spirit of musicological brotherhood. In the Bulletin de la Societe francaise de musicologie and later in the Revue de musicologie, we find bibliographical notices of the articles published in the Swedish journal, in the issues of 1920-1924 and 1928-1932. In the Swedish review, after 1932, the summaries in French disappeared. The most important field of research pursued in common by Swedish and French scholars concerned the presence of French music in Sweden in the 17th and early 18th centuries. On this subject there had already been fruitful exchange, at the beginning of the 20th century, between Jules Ecorcheville and the Swedish musicologist Tobias Norlind. At the same time, Andri Pirro became interested in Swedish music history and thus approached Norlind himself. Carl-Allan Moberg a pupil of Norlind's and a central figure in Swedish musicology, contributed to this field with three articles that were published in Sweden and in France in the period in and around 1930. After that time, scholarly contacts between French and Swedish musicologists became relatively rare.

  • Ruptured narratives : An analysis of the contradictions within young people's responses to issues of personal responsibility and social violence within an educational context
  • 2009
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This thesis addresses the problems of social violence which are based on stereotyped prejudices, and directed towards people who differ from the norm, and asks how education aiming at counteracting social violence can be understood. Within education, the aspiration to contest social violence is generally motivated by a democratic framework stressing distributive justice and everyone’s equal value. The promotion of justice has recently become linked to the development of individuals’ moral responsibility in ways which overlook relational complexities. In contrast to a developmental approach, the intention with this thesis is to explore how education can be understood by using nine young people’s responses and sense of responsibility(-ies) in relation to others’ life circumstances as a starting-point for analysis. Hence, the investigation delves into the relationship between moral action and justice/injustice within the unpredictable field of culture, outside the notion of a democratic (moral) foundation. Using an ethics of alterity, which advocates a respect for difference, it is possible to claim that young people already are (unconditionally and unlimitedly) responsible as seen in their everyday responses to others’ life circumstances. The question at stake is rather what they choose to do with their responsibility. An ethics of dissensus, on the other hand, is used to acknowledge the embodiedness of human relations which now and then can be accompanied by unintended reactions, power relations, and contradictions – all of which necessary to pay attention to when social violence is discussed. An ethics of dissensus creates a link to Julia Kristeva’s subject-in-process, and to ruptured narratives, which has been used as an analytical lens in this investigation. The results of the thesis indicate that the youths already are forced to face other people’s more or less harsh life circumstances. Furthermore, all of the young people portray themselves as persons who do not want to expose people to harm and at times even as persons who want to promote others’ well-being. These ideal self images, however, collide with other forces which place these ideals on trial. A comparison between the young people’s narratives indicates two things. Firstly, although they sometimes use the same word when they describe their sense of responsibility, the meaning they assign the word differs along with their possibilities of action. Secondly, there is a notable distinction between young people who in concordance to the educational discourse position their sense of responsibility in the future and within knowledge acquisition, and those who chiefly position their sense of responsibility in their everyday interactions by using the resources available. Another result of the analysis is the evidence of a gap between the concept of democracy and young people’s everyday responses. Overall, the young people’s ruptured narratives shed light on how they contribute to the creation of social violence as well as to how they promote others’ well-being in ways, which challenge the foundation in democracy as an educational possibility to contest social violence on several points.

  • Cardiomyopathy with lethal arrhythmias associated with inactivation of KLHL24
  • 2019
  • In: Human Molecular Genetics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0964-6906 .- 1460-2083. ; 28:11, s. 1919-1929
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is the most common inherited cardiovascular disorder, yet the genetic cause of up to 50% of cases remains unknown. Here, we show that mutations in KLHL24 cause HCM in humans. Using genome-wide linkage analysis and exome sequencing, we identified homozygous mutations in KLHL24 in two consanguineous families with HCM. Of the 11 young affected adults identified, 3 died suddenly and 1 had a cardiac transplant due to heart failure. KLHL24 is a member of the Kelch-like protein family, which acts as substrate-specific adaptors to Cullin E3 ubiquitin ligases. Endomyocardial and skeletal muscle biopsies from affected individuals of both families demonstrated characteristic alterations, including accumulation of desmin intermediate filaments. Knock-down of the zebrafish homologue klhl24a results in heart defects similar to that described for other HCM-linked genes providing additional support for KLHL24 as a HCM-associated gene. Our findings reveal a crucial role for KLHL24 in cardiac development and function.

  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • 2008
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The second half of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries meant a reform of burial practice across Europe. Urban graveyards were criticised as unsanitary and socially deficient and the authorities therefore urged towns to establish cemeteries on the urban periphery. Sweden was influenced by these changes and between 1770 and 1830 many towns replaced the ancient graveyard with a new cemetery on the urban periphery. A letters patent of 1805 brought the cemeteries under the control of the Board of Public Works and Buildings (Överintendentsämbetet). Architects were thus assigned a new type of task. The purpose of this thesis is to describe, analyse and discuss the new funerary architecture in relation to contemporaneous architectural theory and practice. The study comprises numerous cemeteries dating from a limited time period, including those of a seemingly anonymous and simple nature. The study is based on architecture, architectural drawings and the cemeteries themselves, but it has also been essential to widen the focus of attention to include the histories of science, religion, ideas and society in order to interpret the material more fully. The study of building types in relation to their socio-historical context has been my primary concern. The thesis divides into three main themes, of which the first two parts deal with prototype and how ideas were put into practice. They also look at how central authority fulfilled its architectural responsibilities. Part three takes up the theme of how the dead, following the wide-ranging plague epidemic 1710-1713, came to be seen as a problem for society. Part four looks at social aspects including opposition to the cemeteries. It also analyses how the emerging middle classes used cemeteries to mark their increasingly prominent position in society. The thesis demonstrates that cemetery origin and form stemmed not only from architectural theory but also from social ambition and the demands of sanitation. Above all, the cemeteries belong to an urban-planning tradition that aimed to create the ideal, well-ordered and healthy town.

  • 1809 : Statskuppen och regeringsformens tillkomst som tolkningsprocess
  • 2006
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This dissertation analyses the coup d’état and the instrument of government of 1809 as an interpretative framing process. By close examination primarily of official sources it focuses on how political actors utilized the components of the existing political culture in order to legitimise their actions. The results show that the regime transition of 1809 was a contingent process. Actors competed to define concepts such as “citizen”, “patriotism” and “public opinion” in order to legitimise different political claims. This process served to strengthen the role played by the concept of public opinion as a source of authority in the language of politics. The dissertation also addresses how the regime transition of 1809 relates to the historical epoch known as the Age of Revolution. Experiences from the French Revolution in particular were crucial to the debate on the prospects for constitutional change in Sweden. The study shows that the constitutional committee took a reformist stance based on the concepts of civic virtue and enlightenment, thereby rejecting demands for an enhanced national representation. Instead they argued for gradual constitutional change and believed that the constitution should serve as an instrument to educate the public in the virtues of citizenship.Grounded in the so-called "cultural turn" taken by studies of politics in recent decades, the analysis has borrowed from studies of social movements the concepts of interpretative framing. In analyzing differences and oppositions between various interpretative frames, concepts from discourse analysis has been used, particularly those that emphasize discourse contingency. Extra-discursive conditions in the process of interpretation have been analyzed by means of the concept of possibility structures. This has chiefly involved taking into consideration the degree of repression and actors' differing access to what Bourdieu has termed "institutional authority".
