Core values work in academia : – with experiences from Lund University
- 2016
-
Reports (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract
- What are core values and what use are they? How can the central governmentcore values translate to academia? Why do the ‘statutory’, political valuesend up in conflict with academic values based on the specific culture ofuniversities? What methods and what examples exist for active and effectivecore values work at a university? And how do you implement core values sothat they are present and meaningful within the organisation? This report from the “Core values project at Lund University” attempts to answer these questions, problematise various values and provide support for core values work at a ‘typical’ university. The book contains the history of core values, their legaland cultural background in general and at Lund University in particular. It provides examples of methods which can be applied in core values work, such as a deeper understanding of discrimination and master suppression techniques, norm criticism and inclusive teaching. It concludes with an inventory of relevant projects at Lund University

Den riskfyllda gemenskapen : Att hantera säkerhet på ett passagerarfartyg
- 2004
-
Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
- The purpose of this study was to examine how cultural processes and organisational conditions influence safety management in complex sociotechnical contexts. The object of investigation was a passenger ship where interviews and observations had been conducted for one year. The ambition was to understand definitions of risk and safety that arise on board the ship. The study focuses on situations that are described and identified as risks, rather on "objective" risks. How are dangers and risks constructed, and whose interpretations are prioritised in safety management. Focus in the study was put on significance of different "communities of practice" and the way gender relations influenced the community spirit and cooperation aboard. The study demonstrates that cultural processes are closely related to organisational structures and even affect the organization's practices and ability to deal with safety issues. A hierarchical organization cannot suddenly become equal. Furthermore, in these contexts, organizations have a tendency to be understood as gender-neutral, but women are still "the second sex" in organizations and continue to be reproduced as such. This study contributed to the understanding that the concepts of risk and safety are ideologically charged in a complex sociotechnical system.

Tactical avoidance of statistics? – How students choose methods in writing theses in interdisciplinary higher education programmes
- 2020

Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
- Eldh discusses the challenges in teaching quantitative methods, in this case statistics, in interdisciplinary courses with mixed methods where both qualitative and quantitative methods are taught. Despite this, most students tend to choose to use qualitative methods in their thesis research and the author researches why this is the case. Literature suggests that students often find statistics courses to be daunting and that students may lack motivation. However, the author finds that in this case the challenges have more to do with the framing of the course in the programme, the instructions from supervisors to their students and the competency of teaching staff when it comes to methods other than the ones they themselves promote. The findings and discussion highlight the importance of collegial communication and mutual understanding.
