  • A study of establishment processes and entrepreneurial industry emergence in a Swedish region facing difficulties
  • 2008
  • In: 53rd International Council for Small Business World Conference. - Halifax, Canada : ICSB.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper explores establishment processes of a new industry located in a peripheral region of Sweden that is based upon old traditional industries in decline. Based on a qualitativestudy, we identify how actors within the new industry interact and intervene with the existing infrastructures and institutions that support the old local industry while trying to build new infrastructures. We identify key restricting and supporting mechanisms for theestablishment processes, with implications for policy and regional and entrepreneurship research.

  • Entrepreneurial initiatives as threats : how seasoned industry actors hinder regional restructuring
  • 2009
  • In: 54th International Council for Small Business World Conference. - Seoul, Korea : ICSB.
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The aim of this paper was to further understanding of regional restructuring and revitalisation by illustrating how opportunities for regional renewal may be reduced by rigid threat responses by a region’s established actors within declining industries. In an inductive case study of new biorefinery industry initiatives in a region where traditional forestry industries were in decline, we outline how new industry players that created new ways of using existing resources sparked rigid threat responses among established actors. When seasoned industry actors framed new industry initiatives as threats, they responded by (a) reducing new industry actors’ possibilities for new business development, (b) engaging in entrenched resistance, (c) creating collaborative illusions, and (d) undermining the fundamentals of the new industry. Our study contributes to literature by applying the threat-rigidity thesis on a regional level and by illustrating that conflicting behaviours between new and established industry actors can make restructuring and revitalisation problematic.

  • When a new industry meets traditional and declining ones: An integrative approach towards dialectics and social movement theory in a model of regional industry emergence processes
  • 2010
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 26:3, s. 290-308
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper takes an integrative approach towards dialectics and social movement theories in a model of regional industry emergence processes. Based on an inductive qualitative investigation we describe how a new industry emerges in a declining and peripheral region dominated by struggling and traditional local industry. The emanating model of regional industry emergence is based on four main processes; framing processes, movement mobilisation processes, inter-industry relational processes and dialectical processes, which together shape the emerging regional industry. This exemplifies how new regional industry mobilisation efforts provide an ‘anti-thesis' to traditional industry, and how established industry actors respond with contestation to protect their business concepts. Furthermore we illustrate how new industry actors reframe their concepts to complement dominating traditional industry and to overcome tensions and conflicts. Following dialectic interaction between new and traditional industry we noticed signs of acceptance and synthesis between the newly formed and old industry actors; ultimately resulting in a revitalisation of the region's traditional industry. As such, the paper makes a point of accounting for agency and productive conflict when understanding regional industry renewal and emergence.

  • Boundary work of entrepreneurs in the cultural and creative sectors
  • 2023
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The growing cultural and creative sector has been argued to be an important catalyst for revitalization and development of other industries, cities, and regions through innovative value creation based on a logic with a focus on cultural and creative values rather than on growth and scalability. We argue that in attempting to realize such positive effects, cultural and creative entrepreneurs (CC entrepreneurs) face challenges, including liabilities of smallness, newness, and uniqueness, and of creating an identity, legitimacy and understanding of their value in interaction with partners. In coping with these challenges, boundary work becomes critical, and this paper explores the boundary work of CC entrepreneurs. Based on our qualitative study we use three narratives to illustrate our analysis of how the entrepreneurs engage in boundary work. We find that CC entrepreneurs set and maintain, as well as span and cross boundaries to overcome challenges of identity and develop their distinctiveness and belonging, and to overcome liabilities through cooperating across boundaries or expanding their scope. We also show that boundary work can be a joint effort by CC entrepreneurs, facilitated by creating boundary spaces, individuals taking on boundary roles, and through using boundary objects.

  • Co-opetition dynamics – an outline for further inquiry
  • 2010
  • In: Competitiveness Review: An International Journal. - : Emerald Group Publishing Ltd. - 1059-5422 .- 2051-3143. ; 20:2, s. 194-214
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to conceptually develop the understanding of co-opetitiondynamics and to enhance the conceptual clarity of co-opetition by developing a definition based onprevious research efforts.Design/methodology/approach – This conceptual paper integrates various approaches to theconcept co-opetition into a definition that holds for co-opetitive interactions across multiple levels.Different co-opetitive interactions and the resulting dynamics are discussed by drawing uponcompetition and cooperation theories. The paper concludes with an agenda for further research onco-opetition dynamics.Findings – The paper outlines how different types of co-opetitive interactions result in archetypicalsituations where the dynamics of co-opetition are present as well as where the dynamics of co-opetitionare missing due to a lack of balance between cooperation and competition. It notes four co-opetitiveforces: over-embedding, distancing, confronting, and colluding. These four forces drive developmenttowards situations without dynamics.Originality/value – This paper provides a conceptual understanding of co-opetition dynamics andwill reveal that in order to adequately account for co-opetition dynamics, a definition of co-opetitionmust analytically separate the cooperative and the competitive interaction inherent in co-opetition.

  • Sustainable economic organisation : simply a matter of reconceptualisation or a need for a new ethics?
  • 2007
  • In: International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1740-8822 .- 1740-8830. ; 2:1, s. 97-115
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Today's increasing environmental problems are closely related to how we organise economic activities. This paper departs from the assumption that in order to reach sustainable economic organisation, we must address the dominating Market Discourse (MD), guiding mainstream organising. To understand whether reconceptualisations are sufficient or if changes in underlying ethics are needed, we compare the MD with strong and weak sustainability discourses. The analysis suggests that there is a need for changes in underlying assumptions as well as reconceptualisation of economic organisation that coheres with these assumptions. We also discuss how the related concepts of allocative, governance and throughput efficiency permeates MD, and, as principles for organisation, contribute to the inertia in working towards sustainable economic organisation.

  • The role of discourse in the quest for low-carbon economic practices : A case of standard development in the food sector
  • 2011
  • In: European Management Journal. - : Elsevier. - 0263-2373 .- 1873-5681. ; 29:3, s. 165-180
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article explores a collaborative initiative aiming to set standards for low-carbon practices in the Swedish food sector. Examining stakeholders’ comments and considerations during formative stages of standard development, the process is explained in terms of how it is influenced by discursive activity. Findings illustrate diverging assumptions and interests, but also how science partly bridges economic and ecological perspectives. However, while more critical arguments serve to validate the initiative, the resulting compromise does not question the canon of market discourse, including consumer sovereignty and the legitimacy of established economic interests. When acknowledging the role of consumers and mainstream business as causes to climate change, voluntary initiatives such as our case could, nevertheless, influence discourse through the spread of knowledge and awareness, and finally facilitate change in practices and acceptance for stricter regulation.

  • Infiltration of M2 Macrophages and Regulatory T Cells Plays a Role in Recurrence of Renal Cell Carcinoma
  • 2020
  • In: European Urology Open Science. - : Elsevier. - 2666-1691 .- 2666-1683. ; 20, s. 62-71
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Regulatory T cells (Tregs) and M2 macrophages have been hypothesized to contribute to tumor progression. We found that M2 macrophages and Tregs are associated with more aggressive renal cell carcinoma, and that they have a synergistic effect on clinical outcome. Background: It has been hypothesized that M2 macrophages and regulatory T cells (Tregs) may contribute to tumor progression by suppression of antitumor immunity. Objective: To investigate the association between infiltration of CD163+ M2 macrophages and CD4+FOXP3+ Tregs with clinical outcomes in renal cell carcinoma patients. Design, setting, and participants: A cohort of 346 patients diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma at Örebro University Hospital between 1986 and 2011 was evaluated for CD163+ M2 macrophage and CD4+FOXP3+ Treg infiltration by immunohistochemistry. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis: Associations between clinicopathological features and infiltration of CD163+ M2 macrophages and/or CD4+FOXP3+ Tregs were estimated with chi-square or Fisher's exact tests. For survival analyses, Kaplan-Meier curves with log-rank tests and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models were used. Results and limitations: We found that infiltration of CD163+ M2 macrophages and CD4+FOXP3+ Tregs were associated with adverse clinical outcomes. Our data further demonstrate that CD163+ M2 macrophages and CD4+FOXP3+ Tregs colocalize in tumor and normal tissue, and that this colocalization may have synergistic effects on tumor aggressiveness. The use of tissue microarrays rather than whole sections may be viewed as a limitation. Conclusions: Infiltration of CD163+ M2 macrophages and CD4+FOXP3+ Tregs is associated with recurrence of renal cell carcinoma, and colocalization of these cell types may have an association with clinical outcome. Patient summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between infiltration of M2 macrophages and regulatory T cells with clinical outcomes in renal cell carcinoma. We demonstrated that renal cell carcinoma patients with high infiltration of both these cell types are at an increased risk of poor clinical outcomes.

  • Branschinteraktion och institutionell förändring : Omvandling i två livsmedelsbranscher
  • 2004
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Perception of opportunities from an infrastructure investment : investigating the effects of institutional thickness, innovativeness and local embeddedness
  • 2012
  • In: Book of Abstracts, RENT XXVI – Research in Entrepreneurship and Small Business, ECSB..
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The main purpose of this paper is to explore organizations’ perception of opportunities as a consequence of an infrastructure investment. More specifically, the study investigates the effects of organizations’ perception of institutional thickness, innovativeness, and local embeddedness on perception of opportunities. The study reports on investments made in a new railway in a Swedish peripheral region. The sample included organizations from different economic sectors located in seven selected municipalities. The data was analyzed by using structural equation modeling. The results indicate that activities supporting institutional thickness have a positive effect on perception of opportunities. In addition, organizations characterized by high levels of innovativeness and local embeddedness are more likely to perceive positively opportunities arising from an infrastructure investment.

  • Influence strategies in shareholder engagement : a case study of all Swedish national pension funds
  • 2011
  • In: Journal of sustainable Finance & Investment. - : Earthscan. - 2043-0795 .- 2043-0809. ; 1:1, s. 44-61
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Investors spend money and resources trying to reduce the environmental, social and governance risks in companies they own. If unattended, these risks may cause reputational damage not only to the portfolio firm but also to its owner. In this article, we study five Swedish national pension funds and the influence strategies used in shareholder engagement. Knowledge about influence strategies is important because successful shareholder engagements can lead to more sustainable corporate behaviour and a lower risk to the investor. In addition to the traditional power and legitimacy dependencies that have been reported as influential in deciding stakeholder salience, our findings reveal five additional factors useful for determining influence strategies in shareholder engagement. We provide a conceptual model showing how these factors interlink with choices of influence strategies, offering a practical use of this study. Stakeholder theory has been used as our theoretical frame of reference, based on existing influence strategy literature using a stakeholder–firm perspective.

  • Study on balancing cooperation and competition in coopetitive relationships through bridging and bonding
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Coopetitive relationships, with simultaneous cooperation and competition, are argued to be beneficial for the development of competitive advantage. To obtain and maintain such advantage over time the relationship however needs to be balanced. Through two longitudinal case studies we examine how bridging and bonding activities can facilitate and restrict the balancing of coopetitive relationships. Our findings illustrate changes in coopetitive relationships over time, focusing how these changes affect the coopetitive balance. We show how bridging and bonding possibilities arise in coopetitive relationships, how bridging and bonding are related and influence each other, and outline mechanisms in the different processes that facilitate and restrict firms’ ability to balance coopetitive relationships over time. The study offer implications for the literature on firms’ capabilities to manage coopetition as a strategy.

  • Knowledge sharing and knowledge leakage in dyadic coopetitive alliances involving SMEs
  • 2018
  • In: Global opportunities for entrepreneurial growth. - Bingley : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 9781787145023 - 9781787145016 ; , s. 229-252
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this chapter, we empirically investigate an important question of "how does knowledge sharing and knowledge leakage impact the alliance performance in dyadic coopetitive alliance settings that involve small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs)." Taking the perspective of the focal SME to address this question, we posit that while knowledge sharing positively associates with alliance performance, inadvertent knowledge leakage is negatively related to performance. We further postulate that under the conditions of high knowledge leakage, the positive impacts of knowledge sharing on performance would be reduced. Our structural model results based on a survey of 186 SMEs in the high-tech and knowledge-intensive industries in Sweden show support for two of the hypothesized relation- ships. More specically, the results show that knowledge sharing has a positive effect on alliance performance but knowledge leakage has an insignificant direct effect on performance. However, knowledge leakage plays a negative moderating role on the relationship between knowledge sharing and performance. We contribute by demonstrating the effects of knowledge sharing and leakage in under-researched but important dyadic one-to-one coopetitive alliances involving SMEs.

  • Micro-level translation of GHG reduction - policy meets industry in the Swedish agriculture sector
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Reducing GHG emissions is an urgent challenge for mankind. However, as aggregate emissions continue to rise, necessary changes in industrial practices are lagging behind. The article addresses this discrepancy by exploring how the issue of GHG reduction is channeled from policy to industry, in oneof the more GHG intensive sectors, agriculture. We adopt the translation perspective to outline how the climate issue travels between contexts. Our study explores the activities involved as advisors, functioning as translating agents within Swedish agri-policy, inform producers about the issue of GHG reduction. The study sheds new light on the effectiveness of mitigation policy in promoting practicechange and illustrates how translation is an analytical framework suitable for studying this within different industries.

  • 2014
  • In: European Management Journal. - : Elsevier. - 0263-2373 .- 1873-5681. ; 32:2, s. 203-215
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Contemporary agricultural practices account for a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions. Inspired by the emergent literature on institutional entrepreneurship, we seek to explore mechanisms that affect an actor’s propensity to act in ways that imply suggesting and promoting emission-reducing practice changes. As influences originating outside the organizational field are assumed to constitute such mechanisms, the paper explores their role through a case study of a project run by a public agency. Unlike extant theory, results show that the agency’s propensity to act is not necessarily enhanced by extra-field influences but that such influences also limit the scope for suggesting change that challenges existing industrial practices.

  • Too small or too large to trust your partners in multipartner alliances? : The role of effort in initiating generalized exchanges
  • 2011
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0956-5221 .- 1873-3387. ; 27:1, s. 99-112
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article describes how smaller and larger firms face difficulties in establishing trust in multipartner alliances. Using survey data from a sample of 141 firms engaged in such alliances, we examine a curvilinear relationship between firm size and trust. Our results suggest an inverted U-shaped relationship between firm size and the degree to which a firm develops trust in partners. We also establish that effort to establish generalized exchanges is important for trust building. Specifically, we notice the inverted U-shape to be particularly prominent among firms that do not make the effort to establish generalized exchanges, which implies that smaller and larger firms depend upon concerted effort to establish generalized exchanges in developing high levels of trust in alliance partners. This has implications for explaining important influences on trust building in social exchange systems.
