  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Interest in heritage cereals is increasing among consumers, bakeries and farmers, and thetrends point towards the local production of crops and connect to sustainability. The most knownvariety is spelt, which has opened up for old landraces such as Oland wheat. Heritage cereals haveshown a higher resilience than modern varieties and have the potential to supply the market withalternative products that have an attractive cultural background. Delicious and nutritious productsbased on heritages cereals have a growing market potential. Consumers’ attitudes and preferences todierent products are aected by factors such as age, gender and education. The aim of this studywas to investigate and analyse dierent consumer groups’ awareness, attitudes and preferencestoward heritage cereals. The number of respondents who participated in this study and answered theweb-based questionnaire was 434. It can be concluded that most consumers are aware of heritagecereals. Geographic background had an influence, while academic background did not. Bread andpasta are the most consumed products and are regarded as the most popular future products tobe based on heritage cereals. The most essential factors in bread are taste and flavour, followedby freshness and texture. The origin of the cereal and its health aspects are important; women aremore concerned about the origin than men, while older consumers are more concerned about health.Older consumers are also more willing to pay extra for heritage cereal than younger consumers.

    • IntroductionConsumer trends are pointing towards local and regional food production, e.g. heritage cereals not least because of a rising interest for sustainability. It is well known that the sensory experience of a product is of greatest importance for the consumers, but also claims such as ancient, organic, or local may have a positive impact.  AimTo investigate consumers’ awareness, attitudes and preferences towards heritage cereals. Further to study differences and similarities between different groups of consumers.MethodsSwedish consumers, aged 18 years or older were invited to answer a web based questionnaire concerning awareness, knowledge and attitudes towards heritage cereals. Participation was anonymous and voluntarily. ResultsThe total number of participants was 434.Spelt was the significantly most known variety among all participants. Knowledge about other varieties differed with participants’ geographic location.  Bread followed by pasta were the most consumed cereal products, more than 99% of the participants consumed bread. The consumption of pasta was high among all groups except for the older consumers who consumed significantly less.Taste, flavour and freshness were the most important quality aspects of bread. It was found that texture, wholemeal flour as well as the origin of the cereal, were more important to women than to men.Bread and pasta are the most preferred future products based on heritage cereals and most consumers, except for the younger, are willing to pay a higher price.DiscussionIn line with other studies it was shown that sensory properties such as taste and texture are the most important factors for the consumers, nevertheless more important for women than for men. The willingness of paying a higher price for products based on heritage cereals indicated awareness about the importance of sustainable food production. Still, well known product categories are the most preferred future products among all consumers.

  • Heritage cereals : historical ingredients in future foods
  • 2021
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The project “Sustainable organic bread from heritage cereals: using history to form the future”, financed by Formas - the Swedish research council for sustainable development (project no 2018–02393), is examining potential and management of heritage cereals in comparison to modern cereals. One of the project’s aim is to investigate links between consumer preferences and nutritional quality of heritage cereals. Aiming for solid ground of the project two initial studies were performed; one literature review and one consumer study (Zamaratskaia et al., 2020, Wendin et al., 2020). The narrative literature review included 135 references and the consumer study included 434 respondents.Cereal-based food products is a large part of the daily diet and throughout history cereals have been an important source of nutrition (Valamoti et al., 2019). The literature review could point out that many varieties of heritage cereal varieties have beneficial nutritional profiles. Further, that consumers have a high acceptance of tastes and flavours of food products based on these cereals. Moreover, heritage cereals have the potential to contribute to improved sustainability and resilience of cropping systems, and indirectly, production and consumption of foods based on heritage cereals have a positive impact on biodiversity. In line with the literature review, the consumer study showed positive attitudes towards heritage cereals, and high awareness. Results showed that bread and pasta are the most popular future products based on heritage cereals. The most essential factors for the consumers are taste and flavour, followed by freshness and texture. Health aspects as well as origin of the cereal are also of importance. Most consumers were willing to pay a higher price for heritage cereal products. Based upon the results from the review and the consumer study, heritage cereals have the potential to supply the market with alternative products with an attractive cultural background. Due to the unique nutritional value and phytochemical profile as well as appreciated sensory characteristics, there is a potential for heritage cereals to become a part of a healthy diet. Delicious and nutritious products based on heritages cereals have a growing market potential.

  • Swidden rye : an ancient crop and a future food candidate
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • Today consumer trends are moving towards local and regional production of crops, especially those with a history, i.e., ancient crops. The aim of this study was to investigate sensory aspects, analytical and hedonic, of swidden rye grown at different Swedish locations. The study included both swidden rye as flour and products based on swidden rye. Results showed a variation between the flours, mainly in texture and appearance attributes. Addition of fat and sugar increased the differences between the samples and significant differences were observed also in the taste and flavour attributes. TThe results form a ground for healthy and tasty future innovations.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: There is currently renewed interest in foods based on ancient cereals because consumers oftenconsider such foods to be healthy and sustainable. Interest in ancient cereals is also growing among farmers andin the food industry due to increased demands for adaptability and the urgent need to preserve genetic diversity.Scope and approach: In this review, we attempt to summarise recent findings regarding the content of nutrientsand bioactive compounds in ancient cereals and their potential impact on human health in comparison withmodern varieties. A literature review was conducted by collecting, evaluating and analysing data from publicationsin peer-reviewed scientific journals written in English language. Key findings and conclusions: As indicated in several studies, ancient cereal varieties might have beneficialnutritional profile and consumers appreciate the taste and flavour of foods based on ancient cereals. These cerealshave the potential to contribute to the improved sustainability and resilience of cropping systems. Inaddition, the production and consumption of foods based on ancient cereals indirectly encourages biodiversity, which has become a priority in environmental and organic farming circles. In conclusion, due to their uniquenutritional value and phytochemical profile as well as their sensory characteristics, there is good potential forancient cereals and associated products to become a part of a healthy diet.

  • 2024

  • Buckwheat : An underutilized crop with attractive sensory qualities and health benefits
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition. - : Taylor and Francis Ltd.. - 1040-8398 .- 1549-7852. ; , s. 1-16
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The pseudocereal buckwheat is one of the ancient domesticated crops. The aim of the present review was to outline the potential of buckwheat as an agricultural crop and brings studies on buckwheat into a new larger perspective combining current knowledge in agricultural history and practice, nutritional and sensory properties, as well as possible benefits to human health. Historically, buckwheat was an appreciated crop because of its short growth period, moderate requirements for growth conditions, and high adaptability to adverse environments. Nowadays, interest in buckwheat-based food has increased because of its nutritional composition and many beneficial properties for human health. Buckwheat is a rich course of proteins, dietary fibers, vitamins, minerals, and bioactive compounds, including flavonoids. Moreover, it contains no gluten and can be used in the production of gluten-free foods for individuals diagnosed with celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, or wheat protein allergies. Buckwheat is traditionally used in the production of various foods and can be successfully incorporated into various new food formulations with positive effects on their nutritional value and attractive sensory properties. Further research is needed to optimize buckwheat-based food development and understand the mechanism of the health effects of buckwheat consumption on human well-being.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Nature. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 57:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of baryon excitation spectra provides insight into the inner structure of baryons. So far, most of the world-wide efforts have been directed towards N∗ and Δ spectroscopy. Nevertheless, the study of the double and triple strange baryon spectrum provides independent information to the N∗ and Δ spectra. The future antiproton experiment P¯ANDA will provide direct access to final states containing a Ξ¯ Ξ pair, for which production cross sections up to μb are expected in p¯p reactions. With a luminosity of L= 10 31 cm- 2 s- 1 in the first phase of the experiment, the expected cross sections correspond to a production rate of ∼106events/day. With a nearly 4 π detector acceptance, P¯ANDA will thus be a hyperon factory. In this study, reactions of the type p¯p → Ξ¯ +Ξ∗ - as well as p¯p → Ξ¯ ∗ +Ξ- with various decay modes are investigated. For the exclusive reconstruction of the signal events a full decay tree fit is used, resulting in reconstruction efficiencies between 3 and 5%. This allows high statistics data to be collected within a few weeks of data taking.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Nature. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 57:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The antiproton experiment PANDA at FAIR is designed to bring hadron physics to a new level in terms of scope, precision and accuracy. In this work, its unique capability for studies of hyperons is outlined. We discuss ground-state hyperons as diagnostic tools to study non-perturbative aspects of the strong interaction, and fundamental symmetries. New simulation studies have been carried out for two benchmark hyperon-antihyperon production channels: p¯ p→ Λ¯ Λ and p¯ p→ Ξ¯ +Ξ-. The results, presented in detail in this paper, show that hyperon-antihyperon pairs from these reactions can be exclusively reconstructed with high efficiency and very low background contamination. In addition, the polarisation and spin correlations have been studied, exploiting the weak, self-analysing decay of hyperons and antihyperons. Two independent approaches to the finite efficiency have been applied and evaluated: one standard multidimensional efficiency correction approach, and one efficiency independent approach. The applicability of the latter was thoroughly evaluated for all channels, beam momenta and observables. The standard method yields good results in all cases, and shows that spin observables can be studied with high precision and accuracy already in the first phase of data taking with PANDA.

  • 2016
  • Ingår i: European Physical Journal A. - : Springer Publishing Company. - 1434-6001 .- 1434-601X. ; 52:10
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Simulation results for future measurements of electromagnetic proton form factors at P ¯ ANDA (FAIR) within the PandaRoot software framework are reported. The statistical precision with which the proton form factors can be determined is estimated. The signal channel p¯ p→ e+e- is studied on the basis of two different but consistent procedures. The suppression of the main background channel, i.e.p¯ p→ π+π-, is studied. Furthermore, the background versus signal efficiency, statistical and systematical uncertainties on the extracted proton form factors are evaluated using two different procedures. The results are consistent with those of a previous simulation study using an older, simplified framework. However, a slightly better precision is achieved in the PandaRoot study in a large range of momentum transfer, assuming the nominal beam conditions and detector performance.

  • Consequences of an increased extraction of forest biofuel in Sweden : a synthesis from the biofuel research programme 2007-2011
  • 2014
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • EXECUTIVE SUMMARY.This report summarizes the state of knowledge with respect to possibilities for increasing the extraction of forest fuel in Sweden and the consequences of such increases on soil, water and biodiversity. It is based, above all, on research carried out within the Swedish Energy Agency’s research programme “the Bioenergy Feedstock Programme” (2007-2011), as well as on other, related projects financed by the Energy Agency. The goal of the study was to investigate and highlight1. New knowledge emerged from the Bioenergy Feedstock Programme;2. The link between research results and national environmental objectives and forestry guidelines;3. What questions remain to be answered in order to allow for a long-term and sustainable production and use of forest fuels. The result shows that there is a considerable potential for increasing forest fuel extraction without decreasing possibilities of achieving other societal, environmental and forest production objectives. The current extraction level of approximately 50 PJ can be increased to 87 PJ, at least. Branches and tops are the least problematic, while some questions remain regarding the consequences of stump extraction. Nevertheless, limited stump extraction should be possible. This increased extraction is linked to a number of conditions which must be fulfilled in order for negative effects to be avoided, i.e.:1. That the general environmental considerations in forestry are not negatively affected.2. That extracted branches, tops and stumps mainly comes from conifers.3. That compensation for loss of base cations by means of ash recycling is done where needed, using good-quality ash.4. That it is possible to limit soil damage as felling residues and stumps, when harvested, cannot be used to reinforce the strip roads (extraction of branches, tops and stumps can only be done on land with good load-bearing capacity).5. That extraction is not done near woodland key habitats and nature reserves, where an increase in the amount of deadwood exposed to sunlight is likely to be more beneficial for biodiversity than if it is left elsewhere in a managed forest landscape

  • Natural regeneration and population dynamics of the tree Afzelia quanzensis in woodlands in Southern Africa
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: African Journal of Ecology. - : Wiley. - 0141-6707 .- 1365-2028. ; 47, s. 583-591
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The logging of tree species of high commercial value is increasing throughout the African continent, yet the ecology of these species is generally poorly known. We studied the regeneration pattern and size class distribution of Afzelia quanzensis populations in northern South Africa over a 5-year period. Recruitment was low as the annual seedling mortality was > 65%. Seedlings were located under the canopy and were affected by drought and browsing. The adults were scattered or were in a clump-dispersed pattern, which would result in higher recruitment of offspring near parents. Individuals of 0-10 cm diameter at breast height (DBH) were few, while there were 32 trees ha-1 at > 10 cm DBH with an annual mortality of 0.8%. Annual diameter increments varied between 0.06 and 0.28 cm. It appears that the transition from the sapling into the juvenile stage could be a bottleneck in the regeneration of the species. A longer study, including more rainfall cycles, may reveal other patterns as dry and wet years have different impacts on dynamics.

    • DEBATT.

  • Tree Species Diversity in Community Managed and National Park Forests in the Mid-Hills of Central Nepal
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sustainable Forestry. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1054-9811 .- 1540-756X. ; 33, s. 796-813
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Community forestry is expanding in developing countries but there is limited knowledge of, and contradictory findings about, its contribution to biodiversity conservation. This study aims at increasing the understanding of tree species diversity in community forests compared to National Parks. A forest inventory was carried out in four community forests and one National Park in the mid-hills of central Nepal. The study found that community forestry has contributed to high tree species diversity where forest management communities have interests in multiple species, but most community forests are moving toward promoting limited timber yielding species that have high economic value. Linking community forestry with economic incentives for conserving multiple tree species could therefore be a strategy to conserve biodiversity outside of protected areas.

  • Species composition, diversity and local uses of tropical dry deciduous and gallery forests in Nicaragua
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Biodiversity and Conservation. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0960-3115 .- 1572-9710. ; 15:4, s. 1509-1527
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The floristic composition and diversity of tropical dry deciduous and gallery forests were studied in Chacocente Wildlife Refuge, located on the Pacific coast in Nicaragua during 1994 and 2000. Density, dominance and frequency as well as species and family important values were computed to characterize the floristic composition. A variety of diversity measures were also calculated to examine heterogeneity in each forest community. A total of 29 families, 49 genera and 59 species were represented in 2 ha dry deciduous forest. In the gallery forest, the number of families, genera and species recorded in 2000 inventory was 33, 48 and 58, respectively and slightly higher than the 1994 inventory. The number of stems >= 10 cm dbh varied from 451 to 489 per hectare in the deciduous forest, and from 283 to 298 per hectare in the gallery forest. The basal area was much larger for species in the gallery than dry deciduous forest. Fabaceae, sub family Papilionoideae, was the most specious family in the deciduous forest while Meliaceae was the dominant family in the gallery forest. Similarity in species composition and abundance between deciduous and gallery forests was low. In terms of species diversity, the gallery forest was found more diverse than the deciduous forest using Fisher's diversity index. Both forest communities were characterized by a typical inverse J shape. Therefore, emphasis should be given to the protection of rare species, i.e. as the forests are still under continued human pressure, an immediate action should be taken to conserve the remaining flora.

  • Interacting effects of grass height and herbivores on the establishment of an encroaching savanna shrub
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Plant Ecology. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1385-0237 .- 1573-5052. ; 201:2, s. 553-566
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Shrub encroachment is a widely observed problem in Southern African savannas. Although the effects of herbivory and grass height on woody species recruitment have been studied individually, little information exists about how these factors interact. In this study seeds and seedlings of the encroaching shrub Dichrostachys cinerea were planted in clipped and unclipped grass plots, with and without large herbivores present. Seed germination, seedling survival and seedling predation were monitored for 8 months. Germination started earlier in plots where herbivores were excluded. Overall, the earlier the seeds germinated, the longer the seedlings survived. Clipping positively affected the number of germinated seeds, seedling growth and survival but effects varied among herbivore exclusion treatments and sites. Invertebrates caused the majority of the seedling damage. We conclude the recruitment of D. cinerea is influenced by the interplay of grass height and herbivory. In this study, the presence of large herbivores early in the wet season, and the absence of simulated grazing later on, affected the regeneration of D. cinerea negatively. However, differences in effects among sites suggest that the mechanisms found here may work differently in other habitats.

  • Feasibility study for the measurement of pi N transition distribution amplitudes at (P)over-barANDA in (P)over-barp -> J/psi pi(0)
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Physical Review D. - : AMER PHYSICAL SOC. - 2470-0010 .- 2470-0029. ; 95:3
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The exclusive charmonium production process in (P) over barp annihilation with an associated pi 0 meson (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0) is studied in the framework of QCD collinear factorization. The feasibility of measuring this reaction through the J/psi -> e(+) e(-) decay channel with the AntiProton ANnihilation at DArmstadt ((P) over bar ANDA) experiment is investigated. Simulations on signal reconstruction efficiency as well as the background rejection from various sources including the (P) over barp -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0) and (p) over barp -> J/psi pi(0)pi(0) reactions are performed with PANDAROOT, the simulation and analysis software framework of the (P) over bar ANDA experiment. It is shown that the measurement can be done at (P) over bar ANDA with significant constraining power under the assumption of an integrated luminosity attainable in four to five months of data taking at the maximum design luminosity.
