    • There are currently several types of devices capable of harnessing wave energy, exploiting a broad variety of physical transformation processes. These devices – known as Wave Energy Converters (WECs) – are developed to maximize their power output. However, there are still uncertainties about their response and survivability to loads induced by adverse environmental conditions, with a consequent increase of the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE), which prevents in fact their commercial diffusion. As evidenced by a large body of research, marine renewable energy devices need to have more robust design practices. To address this issue, we propose the CFD-based DualSPHysics toolbox as a support in the design stages. DualSPHysics is high-fidelity software inherently suited to numerically address most challenges posed by multiphysics simulations, which are required to reliably predict WEC response in situations well beyond operational conditions. It should be noted that WECs, generally, may be connected to the seabed and comprise mechanical systems named Power Take-Offs (PTO) used to convert the energy from waves into electricity or other usable energies. To reproduce these features, DualSPHysics benefits from coupling with the multiphysics library Project Chrono and the dynamic mooring model Moordyn+. In this work, the augmented DualSPHysics framework is utilised to simulate a range of very different types of WECs with a variety of elements, such as catenary connections, taut mooring lines, or linear and nonlinear PTO actuators. Version 5.2 of the open-source licensed code was recently released, making the numerical framework publicly available as one unit. This work aims to provide a numerical review of past applications, and to demonstrate how the same open-source code is able to simulate very different technologies.Specifically, this paper proposes routine modeling and validation procedures using the SPH-based solver DualSPHysics applied to five different WEC types: i) a moored point absorber (PA); ii) an oscillating wave surge converter (OWSC); iii) a floating OWSC (so called FOSWEC); iv) a wave energy hyperbaric converter (WEHC); and v) a multi-body attenuator (so called Multi-float M4). For each device listed above, we provide validation proof against physical model data for various components of the floater(s) and PTO related quantities, performed under specific sea conditions that aim to challenge their survivability. Within the scope of this research, we present the WEC response with respect to the degrees of freedom that really matter for each of the floatings due to hydrodynamic interactions (i.e., heave, surge, and pitch), along with quantities more intimately connected to the anchoring systems (e.g., line tension) or the mechanical apparatus (e.g., end-stopper force). The quality of the results, the discussion built upon them and the demonstrated solver exploitability to a wide range of WECs show that one software model can run all cases using the exact same methodology, which is of great value for the marine energy R&D community. Finally, we discuss future research objectives, which include the implementation of automation to apply open control systems and possible applications to subsets of WEC farm arrays and other floating energy harnessing devices.

  • MIDIS : JWST NIRCam and MIRI Unveil the Stellar Population Properties of Lyα Emitters and Lyman-break Galaxies at z ≃ 3–7

    • We study the stellar population properties of 182 spectroscopically confirmed (MUSE/VLT) Lyα emitters (LAEs) and 450 photometrically selected Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z = 2.8–6.7 in the Hubble Extreme Deep Field. Leveraging the combined power of Hubble Space Telescope and JWST NIRCam and MIRI observations, we analyze their rest-frame UV-through-near-IR spectral energy distributions, with MIRI playing a crucial role in robustly assessing the LAEs' stellar masses and ages. Our LAEs are low-mass objects (log10(M⋆/M⊙)≃7.5) with little or no dust extinction (E(B − V) ≃ 0.1) and a blue UV continuum slope (β ≃ −2.2). While 75% of our LAEs are young (<100 Myr), the remaining 25% have significantly older stellar populations (≥100 Myr). These old LAEs are statistically more massive, less extinct, and have lower specific star formation rate than young LAEs. Besides, they populate the plane of M⋆ versus star formation rate along the main sequence of star-forming galaxies, while young LAEs populate the starburst region. The comparison between the LAEs' properties and those of a stellar-mass-matched sample of LBGs shows no statistical difference between these objects, except for the LBGs' redder UV continuum slope and marginally larger E(B − V) values. Interestingly, 48% of the LBGs have ages <10 Myr and are classified as starbursts, but lack detectable Lyα emission. This is likely due to H i resonant scattering and/or dust-selective extinction. Overall, we find that JWST observations are crucial in determining the properties of LAEs and shedding light on their comparison with LBGs.

  • Equalization of four cardiovascular risk algorithms after systematic recalibration : individual-participant meta-analysis of 86 prospective studies

    • Aims: There is debate about the optimum algorithm for cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk estimation. We conducted head-to-head comparisons of four algorithms recommended by primary prevention guidelines, before and after ‘recalibration’, a method that adapts risk algorithms to take account of differences in the risk characteristics of the populations being studied.Methods and results: Using individual-participant data on 360 737 participants without CVD at baseline in 86 prospective studies from 22 countries, we compared the Framingham risk score (FRS), Systematic COronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE), pooled cohort equations (PCE), and Reynolds risk score (RRS). We calculated measures of risk discrimination and calibration, and modelled clinical implications of initiating statin therapy in people judged to be at ‘high’ 10 year CVD risk. Original risk algorithms were recalibrated using the risk factor profile and CVD incidence of target populations. The four algorithms had similar risk discrimination. Before recalibration, FRS, SCORE, and PCE over-predicted CVD risk on average by 10%, 52%, and 41%, respectively, whereas RRS under-predicted by 10%. Original versions of algorithms classified 29–39% of individuals aged ≥40 years as high risk. By contrast, recalibration reduced this proportion to 22–24% for every algorithm. We estimated that to prevent one CVD event, it would be necessary to initiate statin therapy in 44–51 such individuals using original algorithms, in contrast to 37–39 individuals with recalibrated algorithms.Conclusion: Before recalibration, the clinical performance of four widely used CVD risk algorithms varied substantially. By contrast, simple recalibration nearly equalized their performance and improved modelled targeting of preventive action to clinical need.

  • Life beyond 30 : Probing the-20 < M (UV) <-17 Luminosity Function at 8 < z < 13 with the NIRCam Parallel Field of the MIRI Deep Survey

    • We present the ultraviolet luminosity function and an estimate of the cosmic star formation rate density at 8 < z < 13 derived from deep NIRCam observations taken in parallel with the MIRI Deep Survey of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), NIRCam covering the parallel field 2. Our deep (40 hr) NIRCam observations reach an F277W magnitude of 30.8 (5 & sigma;), more than 2 mag deeper than JWST public data sets already analyzed to find high-redshift galaxies. We select a sample of 44 z > 8 galaxy candidates based on their dropout nature in the F115W and/or F150W filters, a high probability for their photometric redshifts, estimated with three different codes, being at z > 8, good fits based on & chi; (2) calculations, and predominant solutions compared to z < 8 alternatives. We find mild evolution in the luminosity function from z & SIM; 13 to z & SIM; 8, i.e., only a small increase in the average number density of & SIM;0.2 dex, while the faint-end slope and absolute magnitude of the knee remain approximately constant, with values & alpha; = - 2.2 & PLUSMN; 0.1, and M * = - 20.8 & PLUSMN; 0.2 mag. Comparing our results with the predictions of state-of-the-art galaxy evolution models, we find two main results: (1) a slower increase with time in the cosmic star formation rate density compared to a steeper rise predicted by models; (2) nearly a factor of 10 higher star formation activity concentrated in scales around 2 kpc in galaxies with stellar masses & SIM;10(8) M (& ODOT;) during the first 350 Myr of the universe, z & SIM; 12, with models matching better the luminosity density observational estimations & SIM;150 Myr later, by z & SIM; 9.

    • Probably the biggest challenge for wave energy is to ensure survival in harsh offshore conditions, in order to reduce costs for offshore repair operations and downtime, and achieve economic viability. This work presents a reliable numerical tool that can be used to study the dynamics and survivability of wave energy converters in violent wave conditions, possibly cutting down the costs of experimental campaigns. Within the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics framework, this research identifies a detailed procedure to model a taut-moored point-absorber wave energy converter together with its inherent power take-off device, which seamlessly exploits its functions of energy harvesting and load bearing. A validation of the DualSPHysics code is provided by contrasting the numerical outcome with a thorough set of data obtained in physical tests with extreme waves, showing that the time-integrated numerical model can capture with good accuracy all the physics involved. The computational fluid dynamics tool is employed to perform a survivability study, modeling high-return period wave conditions for marine structures, and providing guidelines on how to create the numerically best setup to be used for design purposes. A real-like irregular sea state representation, comprising 500 waves, was used to draw insightful indications for the structure optimization to increase the structure’s life expectancy, or conversely, to reduce the initial and operational costs.

    • In this work, we propose numerical validations of the DeepCwind semi-submersible floating platform config-uration for a single horizontal axis wind turbine using data from two experimental testing investigations. A Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics solver is employed to estimate fluid induced loads, whereas the mooring connections are handled via an external library. The first validation setup is based on the DeepCwind offshore wind semi-submersible concept moored with a system of taut-lines and tested for free-decay surge and heave motion (OC6-Phase Ia). The damping evaluation yields a fair estimation of the heave damping behavior, whereas much more dissipation is experienced for the surge. The second validation features a full hydrodynamic characterization of the frequency-related load patterns induced by three different sea-state representations (mono-, bi-chromatic, and irregular waves) (OC6-Phase Ib). The model accurately matches the hydrodynamic load estimation for the whole spectrum of investigated wave components, perfectly capturing the non-linear behavior shown by the considered wave patterns. This work concludes with a systematic study on the motion response, mooring tension, pressure and vorticity, suggesting that: the wave steepness criterion alone cannot identify the most restrictive load case; waves with spectral characteristics close to the heave resonance period lead to higher tensions in the mooring systems, whereas the maximum fluid-induced loads on the hull are decoupled from displacement peaks, showing an average reduction of 30% with respect to the maxima; very steep waves maximize the likelihood of wave overtopping and slamming loads, resulting in locally induced overpressure on the free-board of up to 100% higher than expected for similar wave heights with milder profiles. The input data for these last tests is released for the sake of reproduction.

    • To investigate the hydrodynamic performance of the floating platform VolturnUS-S as configured for the 1st Floating Offshore Wind Turbine (FOWT) Comparative Study, we have used a Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) based solver that features a coupling to the cable dynamic solver MoorDyn+ to reproduce the proposed benchmarks. This is a quite novel application of the method to simulate semi-submersible platforms for offshore wind energy. For this benchmark, which does not include aerodynamic actions, we have proposed a new procedure, leveraging offline coupling techniques to model the problem in a sub-domain of the reference wave basin. Our approach is detailed and validated for wave propagation only, and thus applied to reproduce the wave-platform interaction for an extreme focused wave condition. Good results are obtained for the wave generation and validation using open boundary conditions as well as for the platform motion under the extreme event.

    • Focused waves are becoming an alternative tool to simulate harsh conditions for floating struc-tures. The definition of a group of focusing waves, however, requires the configuration of several parameters. Thechoice of the focusing position is, in principle, critical depending on its location with respect to the structure’s, astheir distance is heavily influenced by the particular drift imposed by waves and/or currents, and sometimes bywinds. Particularly interesting is the coupling of regular background waves and focused wave groups. The pro-posed research investigates the sensitivity of the maximum loads in the mooring system of the Uppsala WEC tothe wave characteristics by considering a parametric description of the design conditions, i.e.: damping of thePTO system, regular wave body duration, phase lag between regular and focused group, and the focusingposition.

    • BackgroundThe extent to which adult height, a biomarker of the interplay of genetic endowment and early-life experiences, is related to risk of chronic diseases in adulthood is uncertain.MethodsWe calculated hazard ratios (HRs) for height, assessed in increments of 6.5 cm, using individual-participant data on 174 374 deaths or major non-fatal vascular outcomes recorded among 1 085 949 people in 121 prospective studies.ResultsFor people born between 1900 and 1960, mean adult height increased 0.5-1 cm with each successive decade of birth. After adjustment for age, sex, smoking and year of birth, HRs per 6.5 cm greater height were 0.97 (95% confidence interval: 0.96-0.99) for death from any cause, 0.94 (0.93-0.96) for death from vascular causes, 1.04 (1.03-1.06) for death from cancer and 0.92 (0.90-0.94) for death from other causes. Height was negatively associated with death from coronary disease, stroke subtypes, heart failure, stomach and oral cancers, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, mental disorders, liver disease and external causes. In contrast, height was positively associated with death from ruptured aortic aneurysm, pulmonary embolism, melanoma and cancers of the pancreas, endocrine and nervous systems, ovary, breast, prostate, colorectum, blood and lung. HRs per 6.5 cm greater height ranged from 1.26 (1.12-1.42) for risk of melanoma death to 0.84 (0.80-0.89) for risk of death from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. HRs were not appreciably altered after further adjustment for adiposity, blood pressure, lipids, inflammation biomarkers, diabetes mellitus, alcohol consumption or socio-economic indicators.ConclusionAdult height has directionally opposing relationships with risk of death from several different major causes of chronic diseases.
