  • A framework for the modelling of tempo-spatial enterprise
  • 2007
  • In: International Journal of Applied Systemic Studies. - 1751-0589 .- 1751-0597. ; 1:3, s. 231-247
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A framework for the modelling of enterprise operations is presented, aiming at enabling a conception of enterprise operations in three explicitly aligned perspectives: its what, or morphology; its when, or temporal position; its where, or spatial position. It is derived from the precepts of a General Systems Theory and its General Process Theory. The practical and empirical benefit of this framework is indicated by a real-life case, a so-called 'Transatlantic Shopping Process', where the models constructed enable management of complexities emerging from enterprise operations.

  • Organization information system : extending organizational cognition through intelligent artifacts
  • 1996
  • In: Cybernetics and systems. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0196-9722 .- 1087-6553. ; 27:3, s. 235-264
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The question of investigation is, What can intelligent artifacts mean to a command system? By means of a theoretical synthesis of previous works, the present work starts with an epistemological discussion focused on systems thinking. With the organization in focus, an extrospective approach is taken in which a global discussion results in some implications for the organizational system design. This system is considered as a sociotechnological system; consequently, the nature of systems (i.e., complexity) and the nature of human beings (i.e., parts of the systems and who are to be served by the artifacts) are discussed. The result argues that intelligent artifacts can extend the intelligent behavior of organizations. Examples of computer system architecture and software architecture are given.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In this text, a French school of systems thought is evaluated with reference to its contribution to postmodernity. The main conclusion is that this system provides some pertinent contribution but that there are also some domains where it does not provide much help. Both these domains are identified and discussed. The text starts with a discussion of the postmodern challenge. This is followed by a presentation and critical evaluation of the theory under consideration. The latter gives rise to the Discussion and Conclusion.

  • On the Usefulness of the Ackoff–Gharajedaghi Model of System Types for the Design of Business Systems
  • 2004
  • In: Systemic Practice and Action Research. - London : Springer. - 1094-429X .- 1573-9295. ; 17:2, s. 75-81
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Ackoff–Gharajedaghi Model of System Types distinguishes 3 fundamental empirical systems: deterministic, animate, and social, with regard to their purpose. It has been formulated as a meta-model to support understanding, selection, and formulation of management models and theories. It is argued here that this model is also valuable for the interpretation and design of actual, empirical business systems. A study of a malfunctioning business is presented and interpreted with the Ackoff–Gharajedaghi Model, which supports this argument. Additionally, the study shows a pragmatic value of the proposed “Imperative of Goals Alignment” for the design of business systems, which is an operationalization of the Ackoff–Gharajedaghi Model. Furthermore, the investigation illustrates the importance of clear goals and incentives in business design; and it supports the thesis of the Ackoff–Gharajedaghi Model that management models and theories, founded upon empirical observations of deterministic and animate systems, impose limitations on the design of business systems.

  • A framework for the constitution of modelling processes : a proposition
  • 2003
  • In: European Journal of Operational Research. - : Elsevier. - 0377-2217 .- 1872-6860. ; 145:1, s. 202-215
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Given that the quality of models significantly affects the outcome of their application, it is important to reflect on the process by which they are actually constructed. This is addressed by the proposed Framework for the Constitution of Modelling Processes, which is presented here along with a few examples of its practical application. This framework is founded on Projective Constructivist Epistemology and provides a generic description of modelling processes, including their purpose, behaviour and structure. The framework may serve as a meta-model for the understanding, classification, use and development of the many different contributions to the field of modelling. Over the past five years, the framework has been actively researched, developed and applied in a variety of practical contexts, including the public, military and business sectors.

  • Multimodal investigation of a business process and information system redesign : a post-implementation case study
  • 2001
  • In: Systems research and behavioral science. - London : John Wiley & Sons. - 1092-7026 .- 1099-1743. ; 18:2, s. 181-196
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Multi-modal systems thinking (MST) has emerged in recent years as an alternative scientific paradigm to the more established ones, founded on positivistic, hermeneutic and critical bases, respectively. Among others, MST offers a system researcher and practitioner the multi-modal theory as an analysis and design tool. An attempt to use this is presented in this article. More specifically, a situation where an implementation of a new business process, supported by a new computerized information system, has taken place causing some unpredicted and unwanted consequences is presented. This case is analysed with the help of multi-modal theory, leading to an identification of system design shortcomings. This exercise shows that the employed theory is a powerful tool for construction of multi-perspective models; it provides plausible intelligibility for why unexpected consequences emerged. Further, its use generated some heuristics for future systems modelling, analysis and design. The study also shows that the theory is ambiguous in its application; this in turn calls for its further development and operationalization.

  • 2017
  • In: Philosophia Reformata. - : Brill. - 0031-8035 .- 2352-8230. ; 82:2, s. 192-215
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study analyzes a complex case in society, namely, how to distinguish ride-sharing applications, such as Uber, from ordinary taxi enterprises. We conduct a structural analysis of normative practices with distinctions at the following levels: (1) aspects; (2) radical types, genotypes, and phenotypes; (3) part-whole, enkaptic relationships, and interlinkages; and (4) the distinction between qualifying and foundational functions as it is captured in the theory of normative practices. We conclude that the genotype of taxi matchmaking enterprises, of which Uber is an example, represents a novel normativity that could positively serve society and also produce normative challenges, depending on its governance. Therefore, regulators should not dismiss the entire  genotype of taxi matchmaking enterprises, but should address the phenotypes that are illegal or that cannot thrive without the illegal behaviors of its users. This conclusion is clear from the structural and directional sides of the practice.

  • 2017
  • In: Dilemmas 2015 Papers from the 18th annual International Conference Dilemmas for Human Services: Organizing, Designing and Managing. - : Linnaeus University.
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • By taking Uber as a case, we take a practice focus, in-depth analysis of the sharing economy. The business model that is typical for the sharing economy is based on using underutilized goods by private persons through digital technologies. In this paper, we bring together the complex reality of the sharing economy with a philosophical tool for analyzing normative issues. We listed a number of issues that were raised in debates, protests and court files that creates tensions and dilemmas for regulators and established industries and categorized them in a table with potentially normative aspects of the issues. The categorization was done through a multi-aspectual analysis. It revealed that next to several public complaints and worries, also other, presumably overlooked aspects, may give rise to moral issues and dilemmas at a deeper level.

  • Using enkapsis theory for unravelling societal complexities : The case of uber
  • 2016
  • In: Digital Humanities 2016. - : CEUR-WS. ; , s. 126-136
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Digital technologies can create novel clusters of societal entities. This can lead to tensions in relationships between existing societal entities and in some cases it requires a rethinking of the structures that characterize these relationships. An example of a digital technology that has challenged existing relationships between traditional businesses, legal authorities and the public is Uber, an application-based transportation networking company. One way of understanding such complex relationships is in terms of enkaptic interlacements. The theory of enkapsis is a philosophical tool, based on a specific view of reality, which may guide a novel understanding of the relationship between artefacts and entities and between social structures that exist in reality. It distinguishes between three main types of relationships between societal entities, namely part-whole relationships, enkaptic interlacements and interlinkages. If we apply this rather abstract theory to the complex case of Uber, we find, for example, that Uber has a part-whole relationship with the information technology infrastructure. This implies that without digital technologies, Uber loses its meaning and will not function according to its primary function, namely to connect drivers to passengers. We explore how the theory of enkapsis can explain a multiplicity of other complex relationships and explain the different responses to Uber in different countries, cultural settings and legal systems.

  • Smart Product-Service Systems (Smart PSS) in Industrial Firms : A Literature Review
  • 2018
  • In: 10th CIRP Conference on Industrial Product-Service Systems, IPS2 2018, 29-31 May 2018, Linköping, Sweden. - : Elsevier. ; 73, s. 26-31
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • During the last few decades, the PSS literature has documented industrial firms' transformation from the product dominant logic of business to product-service bundles constituted by machines and related services. This transformation has had several dramatic implications on firms' profitability, strategy, operations, organizational setting, sales and marketing approaches, and R&D practices. However, more recently, industrial firms have started to adopt various smart technologies that are embedded within the PSS. The use of smart technologies in PSS gives rise to the new types of PSS that are referred to in this paper as Smart PSS. Based on a literature review of 43 papers from relevant academic fields, this paper seeks answer to the following research question: what are the value creating features of smart product service systems (Smart PSS) in industrial firms? We synthesize the knowledge on Smart PSS to provide a definition and show the distinctive features of Smart PSS and propose an agenda for future research.

  • AI-enabled business models for competitive advantage
  • 2024
  • In: Journal of Innovation and Knowledge. - : Elsevier. - 2530-7614 .- 2444-569X. ; 9:3
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Some firms have successfully harnessed artificial intelligence (AI) to create unparalleled wealth, while most around them have failed to do so. This managerial challenge has led to recent calls for research to answer the question of how firms can use AI to create and appropriate economic value. This paper answers that question. The paper reviews the existing research and discusses its merits. This review highlights the need for subsequent conceptual reconfigurations of business model theory, the theory of data network effects, and the theory of situated AI for competitive advantage. The integration of these three theories leads to a novel theory: AI-enabled business models for competitive advantage. This paper contributes to the broad literature on technology management, and more specifically to literature on technology-enabled business models and the use of AI. Several important managerial implications are outlined to help firms ensure successful AI use.

  • Business model theory-based prediction of digital technology use : An empirical assessment
  • 2021
  • In: Technological forecasting & social change. - : Elsevier. - 0040-1625 .- 1873-5509. ; 173
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Firms invest heavily in their future use of digital technology to create and appropriate value and thereby survive and prosper. Such decisions regarding the future are part of a firm's foresight, which is a core element of a firm's dynamic capabilities. The contemporary toolbox for generating foresight is dominated by procedural methods, thus ignoring theory-based predictions of the future uses of digital technology. This paper presents the first empirical assessment of business model theory's ability to predict the future uses of digital technology by a given firm. Predictions for a specific niche of hemophilia firms are investigated. Outcomes related to these predictions are then observed. The results show the power of business model theory for deriving such predictions, implying that the managerial toolbox for foresight generation should be extended to include this theory. This study also provides several directions for further development of business model theory to increase its ability to account for value creation and appropriation from the use of digital technology.

  • Financing Start-Ups Through Artificial Intelligence
  • 2022
  • In: Financing Startups. - Cham : Springer. - 9783030940577 - 9783030940584 - 9783030940607 ; , s. 149-162
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The incredible speed with which artificial intelligence (AI) is entering all sectors is forcing companies into a race to link their businesses with AI. This trend is also driving companies, strategists, pioneers, entrepreneurs and researchers to use AI to design new strategies, create new sources of business value and manage innovative forms of financing. This scenario accurately describes the current situation of start-ups. New firms are forced to connect with AI in order to develop, either because of its importance for their products or services or because funders use it to make investment or purchase decisions. Therefore, to define the impact of AI on the financing of start-ups, we must differentiate between two contexts: the financing of technological start-ups based on AI and the use of AI by investors and funders to support the most cutting-edge and profitable start-ups. This chapter begins with an introduction to start-ups, the diversification of financial activities and the coherence of these new models with existing theoretical business frameworks that explain outcomes. Subsequently, it investigates the theory on AI in start-ups, providing real examples of emerging companies that illustrate these two contexts. The chapter provides examples of AI-based start-ups that have already been financed and companies that use AI to support the development of start-ups through either financial investment or logistical support.

  • Using machine learning to create and capture value in the business models of small and medium-sized enterprises
  • 2023
  • In: International Journal of Information Management. - : Elsevier. - 0268-4012 .- 1873-4707. ; 73
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Start-ups have revolutionised many economic ecosystems, becoming innovation pioneers around the world. Most are based on data-driven business models, particularly relying on machine learning technologies. However, not all start-ups that use machine learning technologies manage to create and capture value. The existing literature on the use value enabled by information technologies does not take into account the unique capabilities of machine learning. The theory of data network effects offers a promising explanation of how to create value using machine learning. However, it does not explicitly describe how to capture value using machine learning. In contrast, business model theory explains how companies use technologies to create and capture value, but not specifically through the use of machine learning technology. Therefore, this study aims to improve the theoretical understanding of the key drivers of value creation and capture in start-ups with business models driven by this kind of technology. Statistical techniques are used in a sample of 122 start-ups to explore the theoretical relationships between these two theories. The analysis reveals the link between specific value creation and capture factors of the two theories, such as efficiency, novelty, and performance expectancy. The study also provides evidence of the need to adopt a co-evolutionary perspective of value creation and capture through the use of machine learning.

  • 2023
  • In: The International Entrepreneurship and Management Journal. - : Springer. - 1554-7191 .- 1555-1938.
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study focuses on how start-ups use machine learning technology to create and appropriate value. A firm’s use of machine learning can activate data network effects. These data network effects can then create perceived value for users. This study examines the interaction between the activation of data network effects by start-ups and the value that they are able to create and appropriate based on their business model. A neo-configurational approach built on fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) explores how the design of a firm’s business model interacts with various aspects to explain value creation and appropriation using machine learning. The study uses a sample of 122 European start-ups created between 2019 and 2022. It explores the system of interactions between business model value drivers and value creation factors under the theory of data network effects. The findings show that start-ups primarily activate the efficiency and novelty elements of value creation and value capture.

  • 2022
  • In: Academy of Management Proceedings 2022:1. - : Academy of Management.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The recently proposed theory of data network effects aims to account for how user value is created from the use of machine learning technology. The theory recognises the unique learning ability of machine learning, which uses large data sets for predictions and decision making. This paper offers a critical assessment of that theory, unearthing some of its strengths and limitations. The latter are transformed into a set of interrelated research questions that jointly constitute the proposed research programme into how to use machine learning technology in order to create and capture value. The paper contributes to the literature with an articulation of some novel knowledge gaps.

  • In: Journal of Enterprising Communities. - : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 1750-6204 .- 1750-6212. ; 16:1, s. 93-118
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate the omnichannel practices to porpose a conceptual overview to offer guidance on how to handle their inherent complexities.Design/methodology/approachThis study is based on a literature review of more than 100 academics papers about the multichannel practices and omnichannel practices in the global market.FindingsTo this end, this paper identifies and addresses three limitations of the contemporary omnichannel literature: the failure to articulate the sources of value creation generated by omnichannel practices, the conception of omnichannel as targeting a single customer actor only and the static conception of omnichannel practices. In response to these limitations, this study offers the following: four sources of value creation based on the business model concept, a multi-actor customer conception, where several actors partake in the overall purchase decision and an evolutionary notion of omnichannel practices in terms of their constitution and use as part of the overall evolution of a marketplaceOriginality/valueThe framework presented in this paper provides a map to take new research beyond its current boundaries and an audit tool to help managers identify their firm’s current omnichannel situation, including limitations and opportunities for further development.

  • 2021
  • In: Journal of Business Research. - : Elsevier. - 0148-2963 .- 1873-7978. ; 122, s. 353-361
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A conceptual framework is proposed to examine value creation through the evolution of business model themes. A critical assessment of the literature on business models, business model themes, and their evolution is presented. This assessment highlights the fact that business model themes are typically theorized as being static. Instead, the framework presented here characterizes business models and the business model themes of value creation as co-evolving within an evolving industry. The framework provides a set of propositions that specify how firms can create value by entering an industry, reacting to imitators, and co-evolving with product market strategies and with environmental factors. This study contributes to the literature on value creation through business model themes.

  • En studie om att leda digitala transformationer i komplexa verksamheter : Institutionella normer, fysiska rum och digitala verktyg
  • 2021
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • In: Journal of Business Research. - : Elsevier. - 0148-2963 .- 1873-7978. ; 69:11, s. 5053-5058
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • New innovative products constitute a central source of economic value creation, but in many industries, salesforce management significantly conditions the appropriation of innovative products during their launch. Very little previous research addresses the salesforce management factors that contribute to successful new product launches. This study identifies and examines a set of salesforce management factors that contribute to successful new product launches by drawing on previous studies related to new product launches and salesforce management. The multivariate analysis in this study uses data covering new product launches in the Swedish pharmaceutical industry. This study unearths a complex and unique complementarity pattern of factors resting upon the duality of a highly dynamic marketplace and sales representatives with an innovative personality type, which are complementary with other specific factors such as training, management control, and reward systems. These findings contribute to the literature on new product launches, salesforce management, and firm complementarities and have managerial implications for practitioners who oversee salesforce readiness during new product launches.

  • Entrepreneurial Opportunity Exploitation for New Venture Performance
  • 2018
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • New ventures drive innovation and economic growththrough commercializingideas, products and businesses when the market has a need for it and create the market need to bring about socioeconomic development. However, most new ventures struggle with survival and achieving early stage financial performance. Therefore, this dissertation investigates the influencing factors related to entrepreneurial opportunity exploitation for new venture performance. Specifically, the overarching purpose of this dissertation is addressed through five unique studies with the following focus:Paper I Entrepreneurial Opportunity Recognition: A Review. This paper addresses the status of the existing research on the prominent factors that influence entrepreneurial opportunity recognition toward successful exploitation of opportunities and discusses what can be anticipated from future research in this domain.Paper II Moderating effect of subjective strategic perceptions of environmental conditions. This paper investigates the way in which an entrepreneur’s subjective interpretation of strategically relevant cues in the venture environment affects the likelihood of applying causation or effectuation to influence initial venture sales.Paper III Moderating effect of entrepreneurial alertness. This paper investigates the influence of entrepreneurial alertness on new venture performance in relation to causation and effectuation approaches.Paper IV Information Processing Capability. This paper examines how founders engage in strategic diagnosis in lower development stages of venture information processing structures.Paper V Strategic Alliances. This studyinvestigates the effect of imitative opportunities on technological advancement experienced by industry incumbents. This dissertation is based upon a systematic literature review and two empirical studies. First, a survey study was conducted with 1,000 Swedish new ventures. The data for this study came from two sources: 1) perceptual data from a survey of founders (2012)and 2) objective first-sale performance data from an archival source (2012–2014). Second, the study compiled a dataset of public companies across 26 different industries that varied in terms of their technological prowess and strategies employed to exploit imitation opportunities between 1998 and 2001. Most variables were gathered from Compustat. The information on partnerships between incumbents and startups as well as the information on connections between incumbents that could facilitate imitation was accessed via the SDC Platinum dataset and the directories published by Asset Alternatives. These studies make numerous contributions to the entrepreneurship literature. First, this research emphasizes the factors that influence opportunity exploitation processes for new venture performance. For example, decision-making approachesin relation to capability and environmental conditions t are important for new ventureperformance. The capability of the founding entrepreneur to consider strategic challenges asopportunities increases the odds of commercialization. We also find that those entrepreneurs who interpret the environment as having potential gain also prefer and benefit from effectuation more than those who interpret the environment as having potentialloss.Second, this study explores influencing role of entrepreneurial alertness in new venture performance. When an entrepreneur with greater alertness follows a causation approach, this has a higher effecton performance than following an effectuation approach. Third, this study shows that strategic alliances exert a direct impact on new venture performance. This means that the new venture’s ability to connect to the right ally boosts performance; otherwise, the choice of ally can cost the new venture itsposition in the market and affect its performance. Hence, entering into a new market with the right entrepreneurial action enables a new venture to enhance performance. The dissertation is a compilation dissertation consisting of five articles. Each individual paper offers deep insight into each entrepreneurial opportunity exploitation factor related to new venture performance.

  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper presents a research proposal aimed to explore coevolution of firms' B2B-IT capabilities, at the relationship and network level, and interfirm collaborations to understand how those IT-enabled relationships affect value creation and appreciation through Business Model Change. In the recent years, interfirm collaborations have become critical for competitive success as digital interconnection between products and processes within and across industries proliferated and in turn disrupted traditional industries. Today's competitive landscape forces firms to constantly persuade strategic change and business models are dynamic IT enabled mechanisms which firms execute their intentions for strategic change and interfirm collaborations. Two sets of IT capabilities mentioned to be necessary for Business model reconfigurations, yet IS researchers have not studied how those capabilities are acquired in relation to the firms strategic intentions and how preexisting capabilities affect adaptation of new strategies. Adopting a coevolutionary perspective, we aim to study this phenomenon through an explorative case study.

  • In: International Journal of Business and Globalisation. - : Inderscience publishers. - 1753-3627 .- 1753-3635. ; 7:3, s. 367-385
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The normative challenges that emerge from a global-local tension, particularly with regard to the supra-legal normativity structures, such as ethical, aesthetical, or creedal, are addressed here. This study investigates a globally operating company that successfully adapted to the local ethical conditions, which contributed to its achievement of business success. Theoretically regarded, it is not clear how the phenomena of globalisation should be conceived. This investigation assumes a novel approach to the conceptual elaboration of globalisation, based upon some selected components from the Cosmonomic philosophy of H. Dooyeweerd. A multi-modal analysis of this case is presented, which uncovers inherent normativity structures governing the involved actors. This in turn provides a rationale for why the alignment between the ethical and economic norms may be congruent and positive. In this way, some initial and tentative proposals are advanced here for an alternative approach to the conception of the phenomena of globalisation.

  • An Evaluation of R.L. Ackoff’s Interactive Planning : A Case-based Approach
  • 2011
  • In: Systemic Practice and Action Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1094-429X .- 1573-9295. ; 24:4, s. 355-357
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Russell L. Ackoff developed the Interactive Planning (IP) methodology as a conceptual tool to guide systematic and systemic development of organizations. One of its unique features is that such development should be ideal-oriented. IP has been well-received within the Systems Thinking community in particular; where more than 300 applications of IP are mentioned. However, it has not been easy to answer the question: “does the use of IP enable that which it is proposing to enable?” as there have been no systematic, empirically grounded, and critically oriented, evaluations of IP. This study attempts to offer such an evaluation. In this case, IP was employed to support a comprehensive development of a Department within a company. This IP application was evaluated using a set of predefined evaluation criteria derived from the IP as such and also from its critique. The results suggest that IP is indeed a powerful methodology to guide organizational development. While IP has several positive merits, a set of limitations were identified and serve here as a basis for deriving recommendations for the practitioners of IP and also suggestions of areas that merit further IP research.

  • An Identification of Normative Sources for Systems Thinking : an Inquiry into Religious Ground-Motives for Systems Thinking Paradigms
  • 2003
  • In: Systems research and behavioral science. - London : John Wiley & Sons. - 1092-7026 .- 1099-1743. ; 20:6, s. 475-487
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In celebration of C. West Churchman's work, this article investigates one of the most cherished endeavours of his thinking: to provide a normative meaning for the conduct of human affiars. Churchman has always emphasized ‘What-Ought-To-Be’, at the expense of the ‘What-Is’. To achieve this purpose, four Systems Thinking paradigms, namely Hard Systems Thinking, Soft Systems Thinking, Critical Systems Thinking, and Multimodal Systems Thinking, are investigated with regard to their foundations for normative guidance. This investigation is made by identifying their respective basic convictions in the form of so-called ‘religious ground-motives’, which are based on the assumption that all human thinking and acting starts with a credal conviction, be it Christian, Jew, Islamic, Buddhist, or other. As a result it is found that these systems thinking paradigms are either founded on an inherent contradiction or provide a normative foundation that lacks a social contract for their implementation, and therefore these paradigms do not provide a stable and satisfactory normative guidance for system design.Note: The key claim of this author is that, to be normative, an ethical theory must be grounded in a transcendental justification which is based on some religious faith. The opinions presented in this paper are strictly the author's, who does not claim that his beliefs have more merit or are more ethical than those of any competitive faiths.

  • An Information Logistics Research Program
  • 2010
  • In: Proceedings of the 4th European Conference on Information Management and Evaluation. - : Reading Academic Publishing Limited. - 9781906638733
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Our human and social affairs operate inherently various modes of information sharing; in this we frequently encounter instances where the needed information is not provided to the needing actor, at the right time and cost, and in the right format. To this end, an Information Logistics Research Program has been formulated, grounded both in current research findings and in the actual needs and opportunities of organizations and individuals. The aim of the program is to guide a long term and comprehensive research efforts by indicating the key research domains to be addressed. The formulated research program proposes the following four key research frontiers for Information Logistics: the Information Logistics Operational Models, the Information Logistics Business Models, the Information Needing Actor, and the Information Logistics Foundations. The proposed Research Program also provides suggestions for how to research the defined frontiers.

  • Dealing with Complexity : Some critical reflections upon Verkerk’s ‘Triple I Model
  • 2014
  • In: Proceedings of the 19th Annual Working Conference of the International Institute for Developmental Ethics (IIDE). - Maarssen, the Netherlands : Rozenberg Publishers. - 9789036104203 ; , s. 169-180
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The article provides critical reflections upon Dr. M. Verkerk’s ‘Triple I Model’ which aims to guide engineers in their work designing complex systems. The model suggests including stakeholders in the design process, in order to search for inherent values of the designed situation, and to design in an ideal-seeking mode. I do applaud the effort made as such as I do the mentioned three features of the model. However, I have also identified a set of challenges and needs for further development of the model and suggest some avenues for seeking support from the domain of systems thinking.
