  • Thermogenic Activity of UCP1 in Human White Fat-Derived Beige Adipocytes.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Heat-producing beige/brite (brown-in-white) adipocytes in white adipose tissue have the potential to suppress metabolic disease in mice and hold great promise for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes in humans. Here, we demonstrate that human adipose-derived stromal/progenitor cells (hASCs) from sc white adipose tissue can be efficiently converted into beige adipocytes. Upon pharmacological activation of PPARγ, hASC-derived adipocytes activated beige fat-selective genes and a brown/beige fat-selective electron transport chain gene program. Importantly, hASC-derived beige fat cells displayed the bioenergetic characteristics of genuine brown fat cells, including a capacity for increased respiratory uncoupling in response to β-adrenergic agonists. Furthermore, knock-down experiments reveal that the thermogenic capacity of human beige fat cells was entirely dependent on the presence of uncoupling protein 1. In summary, this study reveals that hASCs can be readily differentiated into beige adipocytes that, upon activation, undergo uncoupling protein 1-dependent thermogenesis.

  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Historians of globalization have considered how the early phases of globalization brought about changes in localized legal systems. But rather than pursuing the conventional approach of identifying ways in which the law developed to function on a more global scale, we adopt a localized perspective to examine how a landscape of different legal systems offered myriad opportunities in which the entrepreneurial activities of many actors could flourish. Instead of investigating the ‘usual suspects’ of the mercantile world – the seemingly ubiquitous, multi-faceted ‘merchants’ – we focus on the economic role played by seamen as traders by interrogating ‘economic’ and ‘legal’ evidence to illuminate the spread of their entrepreneurial activities across the globe. We take a comparative view of this broad subject by seeking to identify similarities and contrasts in the economic behaviour of seafarers from various European countries. In spatial terms, our focus is on the Mediterranean basin, because this was the first area in which different European legal and business models clashed. However, the session at the XVIIth World Economic History in Kyoto was conceived to include a wider selection of early modern examples, as it is our contention that these clashes were formative elements in the economic tide that swept across the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, giving rise to early modern globalization.

  • Farmers and the domestic iron market
  • 2004

  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Swedish case 1750-1870 in a European context, results from the thesis "Age of iron. The use and consumption of iron and iron products in rural Sweden 1750-1870." During the agrarian revolution farmers and the rural population in general started to buy more iron products and more iron consuming tools then before. It has been claimed that the agricultural sector was the fastest growing market for iron products in the 16th and 17th centuries. (Bairoch, 1973). In my paper the total domestic market for iron in Sweden will presented and the agricultural sectors share of that market will be calculated. This is the first time such a test of the hypothesis has been made. Iron tools had a large impact on the effectiveness of farming. Some room in the paper will therefore be taken on the subject of agrarian technology. The main theme in the paper will be farmers as consumers of iron/iron products during time of falling relative iron prize. I will use iron as an example to show the transition of the agrarian community towards a more market orientated economy. This discussion will be in the lines of Jan de Vries and the Z-goods model showing the path towards increasing specializing

  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In the 2010 Journal of Transport Geography Notteboom presented how the structure of Europe's container ports has been during 1985-2005. An economic historian who has studied trade during the early modern times immediately recognises the overview. There are striking resemblances between the gateways and multi-gateways port regions that Notteboom works with and with trade during the early modern times. The trade routes and transport systems built up during the age of sail ships have, in large part, the same importance today. This clearly shows that research in early modern trade and shipping has an important role to play when it comes to understanding modern infrastructure. In our paper, we will work with the shipping and trade through the gateway city of Gothenburg during chosen years between 1720 and 1804. The city's location between the North Sea and the Baltic Sea places it in the middle of one of the central regions in the world's economic development during the first period of globalisation. It was in this region that the superpowers of the time got much of the raw materials they needed. To try to understand the shape of shipping and trade in this region is therefore vital to understanding global developments. The source material is made up by custom records from Gothenburg harbour. These will be used to track ship movements to and from Gothenburg to determine the city's place in a larger system of gateways, primarily when it comes to the textiles and coal groups of goods, as well as products related to the substantial herring fishing industry. The theoretical starting point for the study is the extensive structure of theories that have been developed around gateways. Different opportunities to use the custom records in an analysis of shipping structure will be discussed. Which part of the information in the source material is suitable to use (goods, skipper, destinations)? How can one, in the best possible way, make the results comparable to other studies? This is a few of the questions that will be discussed in our methods section. The main point of this paper will be the analysis of the gateway system as seen from the Gothenburg horizon.

  • Järnets tid. Den svenska landsbygdsbefolkningens järninnehav och järnkonsumtion 1750-1870

  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The preeindustrial possession and consumption of iron in rural Sweden 1750- 1870. Doctoral Dissertation at the Department of Economic History, Göteborg university.(Written in Swedish with a Summary in English). The main purpose of this thesis was to investigate how much iron the rural populationin Sweden possessed 1750-1870. The aim was also investigate and to calculate the amount of iron needed to replenish iron stocks lost to each year due to attrition. Many studies of inventories have been conducted in Western Europe and North America however; these studies have primarily focused on luxuries items such as gold, silver and furniture. Iron objects were different, as households did not consider their consumption as a luxury. Households used objects made of iron as coocking pots and other kitchen utensils. On farms the use of iron also increased. During the period 1750-1870, iron steadily replaced wooden parts in almost all farm implements, from spades to ploughs and harrows. The transition from wood to iron parts played an important roll as humans gradually took control over the landscape. The new iron tools made digging ditches easier and facilitated large-scale drainage of marches. Iron parts on ploughs and harrows broke the soil faster and deeper than older ones made entirely of wood. Iron tools were not luxuries but they played an important roll in farm economics during the period studied. In the mid 18th century, an average farm possessed about 150 kilos of iron, in 1870 that had increased to around 500 kilos. During that, time the composition of the different groups of iron shifted. Iron used in transport and agricultural production became increasingly important. It was in the transport sector that the rise in the possession of iron was first noted as farmers began to use iron tipped wheels and iron axels on wagons and carts. This improvement meant that wagons and carts could load more goods. The second wave of new and improved iron objects included agricultural tools - ploughs and harrows. Some important changes were made already in the late 18th century, however, the breakthrough of iron implements in agriculture came 1800-20. It is interesting to note that this change was contemporary with a major shift to iron ploughs and harrows in British, Danish and Norwegian farming.

  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The standard of living in the pre-industrial world is an interesting but challenging subject. No single method alone can solve the problem. In order to grasp the standard of living several methods must be used, and work must be done across discipline borderlines. In this paper I discuss methods for using post mortal inventories (estate inventories) in order to indicate the material standard of living in Sweden. Similar methods have been used in France, Great Britain and North America. To adapt these methods to Swedish conditions have been the main focus of the paper. The first method tested here uses the valuation of all objects stated in the post mortal inventory (not including houses and farms). This method had previously been tested on English and North American inventories. All values in the Swedish material have been converted to British pounds in order to facilitate comparisons. The second method tested uses the objects in the estate inventory to create an index of the material standard of living. This index was first used in France and later in Canada. Some preliminary results in this work indicate that Swedish farmers by 1750 were well below English and French farmers in material standard of living. However, during the fifty years that followed a noticeable change took place.
