  • Musculoskeletal Symptoms, Ergonomic Aspects and Psychosocial Factors in Two Different Truck Assembly Concepts
  • 1993
  • In: International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics. - 1872-8219 .- 0169-8141. ; 12:1-2, s. 35-48
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The project was carried out as a multidisciplinary correlational study of two truck-axle assembly systems (System A and B). System A (the old system) could be characterized as an unpaced line assembly system, whereas the change to the new system, System B, involved a parallelized system with longer job cycle time. The study included all permanent assembly workers in the two systems (System A 17 workers, System B 28 workers). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the two systems with respect to ergonomic factors, psychosocial factors and self-reported musculoskeletal symptoms. The job cycles were studied by means of video observation. Each subject answered a questionnaire regarding musculoskeletal symptoms and physical and psychosocial environment. The assemblers in System B were more satisfied with the physical work environment (e.g. noise, air), but less satisfied with the psychosocial environment, and the period prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms was not lower, compared with the assemblers in System A. Video observation techniques showed that deep forward flexion was less common, but that the work was more hand intense in System B. In System B, neck/shoulder symptoms were associated principally with physical work (load) variables, whereas low back symptoms were associated with psychosocial variables.

  • Parents' description of conduct problems in their children - a test of the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI) in a Swedish sample aged 3-10.
  • 2008
  • In: Scandinavian journal of psychology. - : Wiley. - 0036-5564 .- 1467-9450. ; 49:6, s. 497-505
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI) is a widely used 36-item uni-dimensional parent rating scale constructed to measure disruptive behavior problems in children. However, in an American sample a 22-item version, including three subscales, has been suggested in order to increase the usefulness of the ECBI. Two studies were conducted to test the ECBI in a Swedish sample (N = 841). The aims of Study I were (a) examine the psychometric properties of the ECBI (b) to investigate the correspondence between mothers' and fathers' ratings, and (c) to obtain Swedish norms. The aim of Study II was to test the suggested three-factor solution in the Swedish sample using a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The ECBI showed good psychometric properties also in the present study, and Swedish normative data is presented. The best-fitting CFA-model was identical to the previously suggested three-factor model, which thus might be a useful alternative to the 36-item version.

  • Employability perceptions : Nature, determinants, and implications for health and well-being
  • 2008
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The general aim of the present thesis is to increase our understanding of perceived employability. Employability perceptions refer to individuals’ beliefs about their possibilities of finding new, equal, or better employment. How people perceive their possibilities of getting employment is important in a labour market characterised by flexibility and uncertainty, and the present thesis sets out to investigate the nature, determinants, and implications of employability perceptions, using two population-based samples. In Study I, the aim was to study if employability and self-efficacy are two distinct but related constructs and, along with this, to investigate the nature of their association. The results from this study indicated that employability was distinct from self-efficacy and, furthermore, that employability predicted subsequent self-efficacy. In Study II, the aim was to identify predictors of perceived employability. The combination of situational and individual factors was identified as important for employability perceptions. National economic prosperity, living/working in metropolitan areas, poor physical and good psychological work environments, formal education, and competency development were found to be positively associated with perceived employability. The aim of Study III was to investigate if employability could predict subsequent health and well-being. The results from this study implied that individuals who reported higher levels of employability also reported better global health and mental well-being, but not physical complaints, one year later, after controlling for work environment variables and previous health status. In conclusion, the present thesis has implications for theory as well as practice when it concludes that employability is not primarily a self-evaluation, that it is dependent on individual as well as situational factors, and that it has implications for health and well-being.

  • Appraised psychological workload, musculoskeletal symptoms, and the mediating effect of fatigue: A structural equation modeling approach.
  • 2004
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of Psychology. - : Wiley. ; 45:4, s. 331-341
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of the present study was to test two structural models of the relationship between appraised psychologicla workload and musculoskeletal symptoms from the neck, shoulder, and upper and lower back with different aspects of perceived fatigue as mediating variables. In this cross-sectional study a questionnaire survey was conducted among employees at three Swedish assembly plants (n=305). The proposed models were tested for one general fatigue dimension - lack of energy - and four specific fatigue dimensions - physical discomfort, physical exertion, lack of motivation, and sleepiness - using structural equation modeling. The results indicate that the role of perceived fatigue in the relationship between appraised workload and musculoskeletal symptoms is different for different aspects of fatigue. The general fatigue dimension, lack of energy, does not mediate the relationship. As regards the specific fatigue dimensions, the relationship is partially mediated by physical discomfort and lack of motivation but not by physical exertion or sleepiness. Appraised psychological workload has a unique effect on musculoskeletal symptoms not mediated by fatigue.

  • Empirical Evaluation of the Reformed Assembly Work at the Volvo Uddevalla Plant. Psychosocial effects and performance aspects
  • 1995
  • In: International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1872-8219 .- 0169-8141. ; 16:16, s. 293-308
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper reports on the innovative, now defunct, Volvo Uddevalla final assembly plant. Theoretical frames of reference, the design process and empirical data on workgroup characteristics and working conditions are focused upon. Information regarding the Uddevalla plant has been gathered during a long-term co-operation project with the Volvo Corporation. During the closing-down period, we obtained full access to all the production engineering data and personnel files available. We also had the opportunity of studying the responses to a questionnaire distributed to a random sample of blue-collar workers. Working conditions in Uddevalla in the form of psychosocial job factors are compared with industrial blue-collar workers in general as well as with assembly workers in the closed down Volvo Kalmar final assembly plant, which had a different, more traditional, production system. The paper also compares the psychosocial job factors, performance measures and work-group characteristics in the five assembly workshops in the Uddevalla plant. In comparing assembly workshops, the paper contrasts two approaches to competence development and work structuring used in Uddevalla, namely (1) giving priority to the individual in-depth training of a specific task or (2) giving priority to a large competence overlap between individuals in a workgroup. Relevance to the industry. This paper reports and explains some results from a multidisciplinary evaluation of shop-floor work in the Volvo Uddevalla plant, a full-scale assembly plant with a parallelized flow and long cycle time, using autonomous work groups. These experiences should be of general interest to industries searching for the factory of the future.

  • Musculoskeletal symptoms due to technical preconditions in long cycle time work in an automobile assembly plant - a study of prevalence and relation to psychosocial factors and physical exposure
  • 1999
  • In: Applied Ergonomics. - 0003-6870. ; 30, s. 443-453
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim was to evaluate the prevailing ergonomic conditions in a parallelized flow, long cycle time, assembly system. The evaluation focused on physical exposure, psychosocial factors and work-related musculoskeletal symptoms. A random sample of 67 assembly operators was included in a cross-sectional study mainly based on questionnaires. Hand/wrist symptoms were common and related to work exposure with hand-held powered tools. In general, the self-reported physical exposure showed only a few significant associations with musculoskeletal symptoms. This may in part be explained by the ergonomic conditions generally being good, with a relatively low duration of combined extreme work postures. Significant associations were found between the psychosocial work environment and musculoskeletal symptoms.

  • 1985
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This report was a result of a joint venture initiative between Engtröm at Chalmers Univerity of Technology and senior research competencies at the Department of Psychology at Gothenburg Univerisity and Lindholmen Utveckling in Gothenburg (Lindholmen Development). This particular cooperation was the nucleus for yet further long-term relationships with various competencies within other applied science disciplines, as well as with external companies (see other publications registered in Chalmers Public Library CPL). A comment: Publishing consumer reports was the praxis during this (early) period of time at Chalmers University of Technology, as well as probably at some other universities. This means that frequent and vast academic publication by means of e.g. conference papers and refereed contributions to scientific journals was almost unheard of. At least so for some of the applied science disciplines (today are the situation indeed very different) (i.e. earlier was the publication in many respects focused on trying to satisfy the executive administrator the research foundation in question).

  • Seeking Individual Health and Organizational Sustainability : The Implications of Change and Mobility
  • 2009
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Extensive changes are taking place in working life and creating new and important areas for research. New knowledge is needed in order for individuals and organizations to be able to maintain long-term development. The aim of this thesis is to increase our understanding of how change and (im)mobility in the labor market are related to employees’ health, wellbeing, and work-related attitudes. The thesis comprises three studies, based on questionnaire data from different samples. Study I examined the potential consequences of downsizing in two organizations that had implemented change in two different ways (proactively and reactively). A proactive approach seems to lessen change-related demands and provide an opportunity for increased participation, which helps lessen the negative effects on employee work attitudes and wellbeing. The descriptive data from a representative sample in Study II revealed that 28 percent of the permanent and 50 percent of the temporary employees did not work in their preferred occupations. The results indicate that those individuals who were involuntarily embedded (locked-in position), especially among the permanent employees, had more health problems and less development at work. Study III utilizes a newly developed construct (work-related health attributions) that focuses on the individual’s perception of the relation between work and health. The results indicate that it seems to be a promising construct for predicting job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intention. For employees to have the opportunity to participate in organizational change, as well as the opportunity to exercise mobility and alter their circumstances when the organization, occupation, or job is not contributing to their better health appear to be factors that help improve health and sustainability for both employees and organizations.

  • 2003
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Development of a tool for integrating Value Stream Mapping and ergonomics in healthcare - A Nordic Multicenter study.
  • 2014
  • In: The 7th Nordic Working Life Conference. Book of Abstracts and Programme. - 9789198119558 ; , s. 123-124
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Aim: To present the most recent draft Nordic version of the ErgoVSM tool for healthcare and some contextual factors influencing the intended impact of the tool. Material and Methods: The ErgoVSM tool is tested at 7 wards on 4 different hospitals in Denmark, Iceland and Sweden. The tests include assessment of tool usability and main factors facilitating or inhibiting the intended impact of the tool. On the basis of these trials a final version of the ErgoVSM is developed. The ErgoVSM tool: According to common VSM procedure the Current State is mapped (visualized) followed by a similar procedure regarding a wanted Future State. The Ergo-module includes assessments of physical exposures (posture, forces, variation, porosity) and psychosocial exposures (demands, control, variation, communication, porosity). It focuses task as well as values stream level. The exposures are assessed by ratings scales with verbally defined end points. The analysis includes discussion of solutions and establishment of an Action Plan needed to realize the wanted Future State. Main contextual factors influencing the intended impact of the tool seem to be previous Lean experience, management style, volume of competing projects and type of value stream analysed.

  • 2016
  • In: Nordic Council of Ministers, ANP 2016:731. - : Nordic Council of Ministers. ; :APN 2016:731
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Recent years Lean Production (”Lean”) has become a prevalent rationalization strategy in healthcare to create more efficient value streams. Research shows that this often results in impaired Ergonomics, i.e. impaired work content and physical work load (“physical ergonomics”). A common Lean tool used to rationalize value streams in healthcare is Value Stream Mapping (VSM). An ergonomic “add-in module” Ergonomic Value Stream Mapping (ErgoVSM) – has therefore been developed to be used as an integrated part of VSM in the analysis of value streams in healthcare. ErgoVSM as well as VSM are participative tools. All occupational groups performing tasks directly related to the investigated value stream should be represented when using the tool. This Guide includes description of methods and assessment templates for physical ergonomics and work content. An initial version of ErgoVSM for manufacturing industry was developed in Sweden. Later, this was further developed for the health-care sector. This tool was then evaluated in a Nordic Multicenter Study by national projects in Sweden, Denmark and Iceland. The Nordic evaluation showed that using the ErgoVSM tool may result in more focus on ergonomics in the Action Plans compared to just using VSM. This is obtained without jeopardizing performance aspects. Based on the field experiences from the Nordic Multicentre Study I, the ErgoVSM tool was further developed, resulting in this present English version.

  • In: Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing & Service Industries. - : Wiley. - 1090-8471 .- 1520-6564. ; 26:2, s. 191-204
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Value stream mapping (VSM) is a Lean tool aiming at waste reduction. Previous research suggests that the use of VSM may result in work intensification and thus an increased risk for the workers of developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD). In the current study, VSM was developed to also consider physical exposure in the analyzed production system (ErgoVSM). As the VSM, ErgoVSM is based on a participatory approach. ErgoVSM was tested in a Swedish manufacturing company. The results suggest that ErgoVSM catalyzes change processes to include intervention proposals emphasizing ergonomics in addition to waste reduction. Thus, ErgoVSM appeared useful for the investigated target group of production engineers and experienced operators. The performance improvements suggested when using the ordinary VSM seemed not to be hampered by adding the ergonomics complement. However, the use of ErgoVSM was somewhat more time-consuming than the use of VSM. In conclusion, ErgoVSM is suggested as a feasible tool to be used by production engineers and experienced operators for including ergonomics considerations in the rationalization process.

  • Framtidens VårdArbete. Proaktivt förändringsarbete för hållbart arbetsliv
  • 2014
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
Effektivitet beaktas i lika omfattning.

  • 2012

  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Within the county councils of Sweden (hospitals, elderly care, etc.) two waves of introduction of Lean Production (Lean) have occurred. The first occurred during the 1990s and was unsuccessful mainly due to dramatic and negative impact on the employees (Härenstam et al, 1999). The 2nd wave started after the turn of the millennium. In 2011 about 80% of the county councils were running Lean projects (SKL, 2012). Now more emphasis was put on leadership and teamwork as well as knowledge on methodology. Successful projects creating e.g. more efficient patient flows are supposed to save time. A key issue is, however, that no general agreement seems to occur on how these saved resources should be reprioritized (cf. the “50/50-basis” in Denmark). Due to this, Lean projects are often perceived as “saving projects” where staff will eventually be phased out leading to further “work intensification”. VSM is a main Lean tool used to reduce waste in production flows. Our present case studies show differences between hospitals in Lean and VSM experiences. At one hospital Lean has been developed from "below" in the organization since 2004 through successive education (SkaS-guiden 2008). In our 2 cases from this hospital the initial steps of VSM were guided by internal Lean educated stakeholders. No resistance was met from any employee. However, the writing of action plans and the following actions were integrated in parallel rationalization processes. In contrast, our 2 other cases at another hospital had only been marginally influenced by Lean. The VSM processes were guided by an external Lean educated stakeholder (one of the authors). Especially one of the cases had significant difficulties in achieving consensus on an action plan including work environment issues. The required time for the VSM analyses became considerably prolonged, partly related to lack of Lean and VSM experience. Conclusions: The duration of the VSM process seems to depend on previous Lean experiences. Problems in the assessment of an action plan, an essential part in the VSM procedure, seems partly due to employee uncertainty regarding the consequences for the individual and parallel rationalization processes.

  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • 2007
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Development appraisal and psychosocial work environment.
  • 2004
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to examine the relation between ‘development appraisal’ (DA) (a kind of ‘staff development talk’ or ‘development discussion’ in Sweden) and psychosocial job factors. Seven hundred and fifty four employees from one municipal district in Sweden participated in a cross-sectional study. All subjects answered a questionnaire including topics regarding demographic and employee-related variables, DA (both a realization and a qualitative dimension), and psychosocial job factors. Those who had had a DA (realization dimension) reported higher satisfaction levels in regard to social support and decision latitude, compared to those who had not had a DA. As regards the qualitative dimension of DA, the results indicate positive significant relations with all psychosocial job factors. DA as a continuing process in the organisations practical activities are discussed and further investigations are also suggested.

  • Employers' attitudes about competence and working conditions among older workers in Sweden
  • 2007
  • In: Competence 50+ 2007. Age as an opportunity. A European Conference on Age Management. ; :Programme and Abstract book
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to investigate employers’ attitudes about older workers (50+). The study has been implemented within the framework of the project Life Competence 50+ (http://www.livskompetens.com). In total, 147 employers contributed from the Swedish Confederation of Enterprise member registers in the south-west part of Sweden. The employers responded to a web-based questionnaire with approximately 25 questions. Each employer received an e-mail that consisted of information about the study and also an Internet-link to the web page where the questionnaire was obtainable. The questionnaire was accessible for approximately 3 weeks. The results showed that competence development is seldom targeted at a specific age group, but can rather be seen as driven by the workers needs. The transfer of competence between older and younger workers often takes place through organized mentor programmes or as a natural part in daily communication and cooperation between older and younger workers. Almost half (46 per cent) of the employers regarded older employees as having greater difficulties with changes or learning new things (for example reorganisations, introduction of new technology) compared with younger employees.

  • Formation of work organisation indices as predictors of job satisfaction among forest machine operators.
  • 2005
  • In: Proceedings of the 37th annual congress of the Nordic Ergonomics Society.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The aim of the study was to construct indices for work organisation with relation to job satisfaction. The study was carried out in six European countries based on a questionnaire survey (N=358). Factor analysis of the work organisation variables resulted in a five-factor structure. A multiple regression analysis resulted in a significant model (multiple R=0,50) with job satisfaction as dependent variable.
