  • Årsbok 2018 : Socialhögskolan, Lunds universitet
  • 2019
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In current debate a number of terms are used to describe the positions of different groups and individuals, eg. deviation, marginalisation, segregation, integration, inclusion and exclusion. The terminology aids us in giving everyday life a manageable structure and meaning, but it also work as a tool of stigma and to keep large groups outside society, not least in research agendas. By using the terminology as structuring devices and analytical categories to describe and understand processes of exclusion do we add, although not purposely, to the formulation of the boundaries of exclusion. To understand these processes it is necessary to begin within us. By viewing our own position and behaviour it will soon be obvious that it is about Us and Them. Norbert Elias and John L Scotson have in a very illustrative way described how it works in their study - Established and Outsiders (1965).

  • Svensk socialpolitik
  • 2000
  • Book (other academic/artistic)abstract
Tjugonde upplagan

  • Arbetsgivare och pensioner : Industriarbetsgivarna och tjänstepensioneringen i Sverige 1900-1948
  • 2000
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • This dissertation discusses employer run or supported occupational pension schemes. Special attention is given to the question of employers' pension promises, their portability and security, during the first half of the 20:th century in Sweden. How did occupational pensions in private industry change in quantitative terms? What did the terminology of a pension promise, its portability and security, mean, and how did the interpretation change? How did the Swedish Employers' Confederation (SAF) act and react to the development of occupational pensions among its members? In what ways did single employers act with new possibilities and restrictions? The research design is heavily resting on archival work. The information from the archives varies in scope and quality. My focus on employers is strengthened by the fact that the information used is produced and filed by the involved parties. It is claimed that SAF was “rescued” from taking a stand, and thereby from an internal conflict, in the pension question at least on three different occasions. Firstly, in 1913, the introduction of a universal and mandatory public pension insurance based on contributions, and a supplementary scheme financed by tax revenue, abolished the threat of employer financing of a mandatory occupational solution similar to the one in Germany. Secondly, in 1937, the advice to the government from the director general, O A Åkesson, on the possible negative effects of a premium reserve system in large scale occupational pension solutions, blocked a legislation due to invoke restrictions on the employers’ freedom to design given pension promises. Thirdly, in 1947, the introduction of a public investigation on a general solution to the occupational pensions question made it possible for the SAF to await its' result. Further it has been stressed that occupational pension schemes were primarily locally established during the period under investigation. In a case study of AB Robertsfors Bruk, a former sawmill and pulp industry, this is exemplified. However, the specific company is not a typical case in the respect of how they met the needs of their employees' pensions. By an early introduction of a friendly society solution in 1900, the company introduced a contribution based system and an insurance principle. In so, the employees had to contribute to, and take responsibility of, their own old age income. The company contributed as well. The workplace showed typical patriarchal signs. But social conservative ideals lived in symbiosis with the idea of an efficient and modern production. The development of the pensions seems to have been closely linked to a similar balance. Social responsibility connected with an efficient solution of the pension question, efficient in terms of suitable for both parties. Each solution adopted, apart from crisis management, was founded in modern techniques. As one of the few private employers in Sweden at the time, portableand externally insured pensions was introduced for manual labor as well as salaried employees in the 1930's. The decision was local, the new possibilities were effects of a growing insurance market and a centralization of the risk management. In a slow process, AB Robertsfors Bruk was a forerunner.

  • 2014
  • In: Arkiv - Tidskrift för samhällsanalys. - 2000-6217. ; 2014:3, s. 7-37
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • In: International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well-being. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1748-2631 .- 1748-2623. ; 14:1
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract

  • 1997
  • Licentiate thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • A study of the ambitions of the managers at AB Robertsfors Bruk and their impact on courses of action in the development of wage policy and social arrangements in the community of Robertsfors during the period 1925-35.This study deals with employer actions during a period of both internal and external change to the organization. The main focus is in the areas of wage policy and social arrangements such as sickness pay, subsidized housing and pensions. The study is limited to an in-depth investigation of AB Robertsfors Bruk at its production site (sales and forestry management excluded) in the community of Bygdeå in the northern parts of Sweden during the time period 1925 - 1935. Production was organized around four major units, namely a sawmill, a pulp factory, a farm and a harbor. It was owned by a part of the famous Swedish industrial family, Kempe. The main actor considered is the local manager, Karl Åhrberg. It is mainly through his eyes this study views the development during the period. Karl Åhrberg’s position as middleman between employees and managing directorate is discussed on the basis of his interpretations of evolving situations. How to characterize the boundaries for his actions? How did these boundaries change? In what ways was this change influenced by Robertsfors’ history as a traditional patriarchal society? The more actor specific parts are based on a comprehensive volume of both business and private correspondence. The description of the structural settings in the company as well as in parts of the community is based on protocols from the company and local unions, local newspapers, annual reports, correspondence and secondary sources. The study’s approach focuses on courses of action. A lot of these are talk, but even so very important considerations as to social responsibilities and other relationships with employees.A company case study can not provide conclusive results concerning wider social impacts. However, one result of the study is the identification of three patterns (courses of action) to the businessman’s behavior namely "the inter-player", "the maintainer" and "the alternator". The study also shows, firstly, how the balance between these patterns changes over time due to both internal, more impressionable, factors and external factors to fall in line with. Secondly how the company over time moves from being a traditional patriarchal organization to a modern industrial organization, but still in many ways in a unique suite. These results are in a final discussion brought in to a wider context of industrial and social political change.

  • 2004
  • In: Nordisk försäkringstidskrift. - 0348-6516. ; 85:1, s. 63-74
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The social right of a secured income enough for subsistence in old age is an important aspect of social policy. Our objective has been to discuss public pension reform in New Zealand and Sweden. Through comparison we have revealed inherent forces fuelling as well as restricting pension reform. To better understand the political differences and counter forces an approach of “path dependency” derived from historical sociology, political science and new economic history was applied.

  • 2016
  • In: Critical Social Policy. - : SAGE Publications. - 0261-0183 .- 1461-703X. ; 36:4, s. 531-550
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Migrants as a group are recognised as being at risk of receiving low retirement pensions. Income over a lifetime is the principle for calculating pension rights. We have interviewed a group of migrants about their retirement preparations. Our results show that there are obstacles that obstruct migrants from entering the Swedish labour market, which will greatly influence future pension rights. There are various lock-in effects that isolate migrants from the labour market and thus affect their present and future financial situation. Examples are labour market policy activities and that the minimum level pensions have mobility restrictions. These trajectories are set in perspective to Nancy Fraser’s reasoning on justice in a transnational setting and Yeheskel Hasenfeld’s reflections on people processing. An important implication from our findings is the need to explore ways to include a group that is currently excluded from the labour market, hence adequate retirement income protection.

  • Electron beam melting: Impact of part surface properties on metal fatigue and bone ingrowth
  • 2019
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • AbstractThe aim of this thesis is to investigate aspects on how additive manufacturing (AM) contributes to functional bone implants with the use of the electron beam melting (EBM) technology. AM manufactures parts according to computer-aided design, and the EBM technology melts powder using an electron beam, which acts similar to a laser beam. The topics discussed in this thesis are related to surface roughness that originate from the melted metal powder, and the thesis tries to define some aspects that affect implant functionality. Process parameters steering the electron beam and biocompatibility arising from the surface texture were the initial parts of the PhD studies, and the other half focused on post-processing and fatigue, which are important for medical and industrial applications. There are six studies in this compilation thesis. They are abbreviated as P - process parameters, M - medical applications, and F - fatigue. Studies P, M2, F2, and F3 are journal articles, and M1 and F1 are conference proceedings.Study P used design of experiments to investigate how process parameters affect the surface roughness of as-built EBM-manufactured parts and concluded that beam speed and energy (current) were the most important parameters that influence the surface roughness. In studies M1 and M2, EBM-manufactured specimens of cobalt-chromium and titanium alloys were used to evaluate biocompatibility. The blood chamber method quantified the reactions of the human whole blood in contact with the metal surfaces, and the results showed how the as-built EBM surface roughness contributed to coagulation and bone healing.Rotating beam fatigue equipment was used in studies F1–F3 and study F1 discussed the size effect on fatigue loaded as-built specimens and included specimens with different sizes and with or without hot isostatic pressing (HIP). Study F2 compared as-built and machined specimens and study F3 investigated how Hirtisation, which is a patented electrochemical surface treatment, and HIP affect the fatigue properties that originate from the electrochemical polishing surface topography. The studies showed that a decreased surface roughness increased the fatigue resistance while the stress concentrations (Kt) in the surface of EBM-manufactured specimens decreased. The thesis concludes that EBM-manufactured as-built surfaces are suitable for direct contact with the bone, and that HIP does not improve the fatigue resistance of parts with as-built surfaces, where crack initiation starts at notches.

  • Surface topography development of Electron beam-melted materials - a historical review
  • 2019
  • In: Proceedings Euromat 2019. - Stockholm.
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Introduction/Purpose Additive manufacturing in metal is developed rapidly, with regard to both equipment and materials. A recurring question from the industry in particular is how the development has been in a historical perspective and what one can expect from the future. This study aims to make a historical overview, from the early 2000s to today, of the surface roughness of materials manufactured using the powder bed fusion technology Electron Beam Melting (EBM). Methods Surfaces of specimens manufactured in tool steel (H13) and titanium alloys (Ti6Al4V) will be characterized using different methods such as focusvariation technology and scanning electron microscopy. Results The surface roughness is presented and shows the historical development of different materials, and different EBM-systems. Conclusions Being in the middle of a constantly evolving technology as AM in metal, it can be hard to predict future developments and this study shows there has been a great improvement in surface finishes from the early 2000s to the present. These results might add some information for discussions on future developments and directions concerning the area of surface smoothness and EBM.

  • 2024
  • In: Social Sciences & Humanities Open. - : Elsevier. - 2590-2911. ; 2024:9
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This study reports the results of a university course aimed at exploring and improving cooperation in healthcare with both cancer survivors, loved ones and healthcare professionals as students.Central to the course was the understanding of and moving between each other's perspectives. Operating within a framework inspired by problem-based learning (PBL), small groups consisting of at least one cancer survivor, one loved one and one healthcare professional, collaboratively created scenarios based on their personal experiences. The students developed, elaborated, and identified problems and potential solutions. The pedagogical framing illustrated an empowering process of defining and elaborating a problem of their combined concerns, using their different knowledge. Although cooperation presented challenges, most students were able to explore and appreciate each other's perspectives when provided with a safe environment. Our experiences highlight the importance of both contextual safety and personal development as key factors in addressing power imbalances in healthcare.

    • Purpose: Cancer research and connected innovation processes often lack a major component; patient participation. We revisit three studies (a-c) in order to explore how Momentary contentment theory may be used to improve patient participation and psychosocial health.Method: We revisited data from the initial (a) classic grounded theory study on Momentary contentment, based on four years of observation and 14 interviews. It explains a way of dealing with life close to death and morbidity. In the imminence of danger the studied culture resembles the context of cancer patients. The two following studies used focus group interviews with (b) 19 cancer patients and (c) 17 relatives of cancer patients in southern Sweden. Results: We suggest a process where cancer patients are taught to be submissive and that the support they receive from health providers may be counterproductive to contentment; a patientification process. We present alternative ways for people to handle issues such as hope, waiting, knowledge gaps and healthcare navigation while living with cancer. We introduce an alternative to patientification and passive patients where active patients create their own safety and truly participates in their care. Conclusions: We propose clinical studies to introduce such a shift from patentification to co-creation of care.

    • PURPOSE: The technocratic and medicalized model of healthcare is rarely optimal for patients. By connecting two different studies we explore the possibilities of increasing quality of life in cancer care.METHODS: The first study captures survival strategies in a historically isolated Arctic village in Norway resulting in Momentary contentment theory, which emerged from analysing four years of participant observation and interview data. The second study conceptualizes everyday life of cancer patients based on in-depth interviews with 19 cancer patients; this was conceptualized as Navigating a new life situation. Both studies used classic grounded theory methodology. The connection between the studies is based on a health design approach.RESULTS: We found a fit between cancer patients challenging life conditions and harsh everyday life in an Arctic village. Death, treatments and dependence have become natural parts of life where the importance of creating spaces-of-moments and a Sense of Safety is imminent to well-being. While the cancer patients are in a new life situation, the Arctic people show a natural ability to handle uncertainties.CONCLUSION: By innovation theories connected to design thinking, Momentary contentment theory modified to fit cancer care would eventually be a way to improve cancer patients' quality of life.

  • 2015
  • In: The Grounded Theory Review. - : Sociology Press. - 1556-1542 .- 1556-1550. ; 14:2, s. 74-85
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This is a classic grounded theory based in longitudinal data from everyday life in an environment in Northern Norway characterized by long distances, a harsh climate and people living close to nature and each other. The place has a history of poverty and isolation. Yet, old survival strategies prevail despite modernisation. The theory reveals a culture of momentary contentment with three dimensions: Doing safety, destiny readiness and middle consciousness. This momentary contentment culture explains how the participants resolve their main concern of enjoying life. Doing safety means that common and individual acts create stability. Destiny readiness illuminates a discourse of acceptance, a way of thinking that, with the aid of linguistic strategies, prepares for life changing events. Middle consciousness shows a way of handling difficulties by dividing and separating different phenomena.

    • "Contentment in the moment" is a classic grounded theory exploring safety and contentment within a small community in northern Norway. The purpose of the study was to explore the village's everyday life from a participant's perspective and to develop an understanding of their living conditions. We found different survival strategies, which have their roots in the village's history of poverty, isolation and harsh climate. Today these Strategies have changed from a matter of life and death to a modern psychosocial foundation of contentment. The study is based on four and a half years of observations, in-depth interviews and informal but focused conversations with people living in Polarfjorden. The data was analysed using the constant comparative method of classic grounded theory. In this article we further relate our work to more general sociological theory, more specifically to Charles Tilly's work on reason and routines.

  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Have you ever experienced standing on the sidelines unable to participate despite wishing to? It has happened to us in various situations: in school,at sports practice, at work, or even at parties. Our experiences are normal episodes in everyday life, but imagine if they were consistent. Being systematically excluded from basic opportunities, rights and services in society is a different matter. This book is about social exclusion as it may appear at different times in life. Eleven authors have contributed with conceptual discussions, empirical studies and enlightening thoughts about social exclusionary processes and the structures they evolve within and create. We think that practitioners, researchers and students of sociology, social work, social services and social policy will appreciate this book.
