  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Between 1967 and 1972, Swedish futures studies emerged as a distinct political and intellectual endeavor. In this development, the humanities and social sciences played a special role, especially through the idea that human knowledge and knowledge about a “human system” could be brought to bear on societal problems and used to forge a new approach to the future. We focus here on two scholars, historian Birgitta Odén and geographer Torsten Hägerstrand, proposing that they were important f igures in developing a new engagement with problems of social and human time in Swedish social science and humanities research.

  • Circulation of Knowledge : Explorations in the History of Knowledge
  • 2018
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Historians have long been interested in knowledge—its nature and origin, and the circumstances under which it was created—but it has only been in recent years that the history of knowledge has emerged as an academic field in its own right. In "Circulation of Knowledge", a group of Nordic scholars explore a range of theoretical and methodological approaches to this new and exciting area of historical research. The question of knowledge in motion is central to their investigations, and especially how knowledge is transformed when it circulates between different societal arenas, literary genres, or forms of media.Reflecting on twelve empirical studies, from sixteenth century cartography to sexology in the 1970s, the authors make a significant contribution to the growing international research on the history of knowledge.

  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Bildningsboxen
  • 2022
  • Book (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract

  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • The Making of Everyman’s Capitalism in Sweden : Micro-infrastructures, Unlearning, and Moral Boundary Work
  • 2023
  • In: Enterprise & society. - : Cambridge University Press. - 1467-2227 .- 1467-2235. ; 24:2, s. 425-454
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article analyzes the so-called turn to the market in Sweden, with an emphasis on aspects that are typically absent from large-scale narratives. How did the changes known as neoliberalization and financialization enter everyday life and mundane financial practices? And which analytical tools can historians use to meaningfully connect the experience of changes on the micro level to those on the macro level? Zooming in on the the year 1979 and focusing on two empirical cases—the popularization of stock saving and the domestication of consumer credit—allows us to elaborate and apply a set of analytical entry points about (1) mundane micro-infrastructures, (2) financial knowledge as learning and unlearning, and (3) moral boundary work. This framework offers a way of exploring when and in what ways new financial practices were experienced and eventually embraced by those who had previously been skeptical or even hostile. It also reveals the role played by actors and institutions not typically seen as agents of marketization.

  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In 1994, sociologist of religion José Casanova wrote in the introduction to his influential book Public Religions in the Modern World that a paradigm shift had occurred in his field. His colleagues had abandoned an earlier paradigm “with the same uncritical haste with which they previously embraced it.” 1 What he had in mind was the theory of secularisation: that is, the notion that with modernisation, religion would disappear from the public sphere, if not altogether. The theory was now, he claimed, something of a myth in the eyes of many of his colleagues, rather than the accepted knowledge it used to be.

  • 2018
  • In: Scandinavian Journal of History. - : Routledge. - 0346-8755 .- 1502-7716. ; 43:3, s. 301-323
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The Swedish youth organization Fältbiologerna was founded in 1947 with the mission to inspire learning about nature through outdoor activities. Since then, the members have stayed true to their slogan ‘keep your boots muddy’ through engaging in bird watching and forest excursions; however, in the late 1960s and early 1970s – a period that environmental historians refer to as the ‘ecological turn’ – the organization’s activities were extended to also include political activism. Fältbiologerna increasingly evolved into a fertile terrain for young environmentalists. In this article, we explore how this Swedish branch of modern environmental youth activism came about. Based on a close reading of the members’ journal, Fältbiologen, between 1959 and 1974, we identify four key characteristics that were communicated in the journal during the years of study: adventurous, knowledgeable, influential, and radical. We demonstrate that Fältbiologerna took an increasingly radical position and began to engage in environmental debates and actions, while still holding on to ideals of learning through spending time in nature. Participation in these different activities shaped the young members into environmentalists.

  • Knowledge Actors : Revisiting Agency in the History of Knowledge
  • 2023
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Historical actors are central to the history of knowledge as they are to all historical scholarship. Every country, every era has its biographies of eminent scientists, intellectuals, and educational reformers. Yet the theoretical currents that have left their mark on the historical and sociological study of knowledge since the 1960s have emphasized structures over actors, collectives over individuals.Knowledge Actors instead stresses the importance of historical actors and re-engages with their actions from fresh perspectives. This volume thus fosters a larger discussion among historians about the role of knowledge actors. Do we want individuals and networks to take centre stage in our historical narratives? And if so, which knowledge actors do we want to highlight and how best to conduct our research? What are the potential pitfalls of following an actor-centric path? This is the third of three volumes about the history of knowledge from the Lund Centre for the History of Knowledge (LUCK). The two other books are Forms of Knowledge and Circulation of Knowledge.
