  • Precarization in the Name of Freedom : Material Conditions for Early Independent Performing Arts Groups in Gothenburg
  • 2022
  • In: Nordic Theatre Studies. - 0904-6380. ; 34:1, s. 49-65
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This article is written within the frame of the interdisciplinary research project "Expansion and Diversity: Digitally Mapping and Exploring Independent Performance in Gothenburg 1965- 2000". It contributes to the critical ambition of producing an inclusive historiography of local independent performing arts groups by exploring the municipal distribution of cultural grants and the material conditions in the field. Based on interviews with nine well-known members of early independent performing arts groups in Gothenburg, complemented with archived funding applications and news articles, the article uses a cultural studies perspective to elaborate on how artistic freedom was negotiated in relation to dependence on public funding.

  • Gentrifiering
  • 2014
  • Editorial collection (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The object of investigation in this dissertation is the living conditions of refused asylum seekers in Sweden. More specifically, it is an ethnographic study of how a group of people organize their lives in Gothenburg under the threat of deportation. In Sweden these people are often referred to as “hidden refugees”, “without papers” or “illegal immigrants”, but since this study analyzes these terms the informants are described as deportables. The research questions evolve around both what constitutes the Swedish non-citizenship and what characterizes the urban environment. As many other post-industrial cities, Gothenburg is today working within the logic of what David Harvey refers to as entrepreneurialism, which means competing with other cities to “get on the map” and attract capital, tourists and events. This study discusses how deportables can make room for themselves in “the city of events” and “the city of knowledge”. Today we see a distinct conflict of interest in Gothenburg. At the same time as many non-citizens come here, the local authorities work hard to reduce this “inflow”. Consequently, this study focuses on how matters concerning how the welfare state ought to deal with the presence of non-citizens come to a head in cities. It argues that one consequence of what Gøsta Esping-Andersen characterizes as the social democratic welfare regime is that deportables are more obviously excluded in Sweden than in other European countries. Creating parallel systems where these people are given some welfare goes against the fundamental principle of providing a high degree of welfare to everyone. Such politics are hard to live by on the local level though. For instance, Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg has created routines for registering people without a Swedish personal number. In Sweden the most common way of naming rejected asylum seekers is “hidden refugees”, an expression that envisions these people living “underground” and “outside of society”. However, the informants’ everyday life turned out to revolve around learning to navigate in the urban geography and to create a life in the intersection between national regulations and the opportunities that the city, after all, has to offer. Drawing on Les Back’s notion of sociological listening this study aims at formulating a place-sensitive sociology, by, firstly, supplementing traditional methods such as participant observations and interviews with walk-alongs and “mental” maps, and, secondly, combining discourse analytical and symbolic interactionist perspectives.

  • The sociological craft through the lens of theatre A call for imaginative critical research
  • 2021
  • In: Sociologisk Forskning. - : Sociologisk Forskning, Swedish Sociological Association. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 58:4, s. 361-382
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Since its inception as an academic discipline in the 19th century, sociology has carried an internal tension between the "scientific" and the "hermeneutic" orientations. In response to this tension, the present article reviews important sociological publications that address the art-science dicho-tomy and explores the relationship between academic sociology and artistic work on society. It takes its departure point from a collaboration between the author and the dramatist Mattias Andersson in the documentary theatre project The mental states of Gothenburg (2006, Angered Theatre). To a large extent, the play's script consisted of extracts of interviews with young people from different parts of the city of Gothenburg. Both "the sociologist", who carried out the inter-views, and "the dramatist" ended up as characters on stage. The article especially emphasises the relevance of The sociological imagination by C. Wright Mills (1967[1959]), arguing that through collaborative work with artists, the sociological craft can be further cultivated and thus realise its potential in terms of making well-founded interventions, both in academic discussions and in public conversations.

  • 2007
  • In: Paper submitted to Exploding Methods: A New Scholar Symposium. Goldsmith, University of London, 22nd September.
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In my doctoral thesis I am analysing the contradictory presence of “undocumented immigrants” in the city of Göteborg, Sweden. In this paper I will elaborate on two of the methods that I am working with – mental maps and walk-alongs. In order to analytically be able to put emphasis on the spatial aspects of citizenship I have asked my interviewees to draw a map of “their city” by free hand, and to take a walk with me at a place that means something to them. I will also briefly reflect on the dialectic relationship between method and analysis.

Joint panel organized by the research project: Expansion and Diversity: Digitally mapping and exploring independent performance in Gothenburg 1965-2000, funded by the Swedish Research Council. Expansion and Diversity connects extensive digital explorations of newspapers with place and historiographical analysis in order to take on the urgent challenge of accounting for diversity in late 20th century performing arts history. The project is the first in Scandinavia to bring together historiographical criticism with new information technologies and digital methods in order to find novel ways of countering previous theatre historiography's denouncing of a multiple independent performing arts heritage. The joint panel will briefly introduce the project, offer some current challenges, and present initial results.

  • 2021
  • In: Expansion och mångfald: Digital kartläggning och analys av den utominstitutionella scenkonsten i Göteborg 1965-2000.
  • Other publication (other academic/artistic)abstract

  • Re-vitalizing Dig Where You Stand: Place as agent in participatory performance history
  • 2020
  • In: ACHS 2020 Futures.
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • By mobilizing place as a particularly pertinent agent in participatory history making, this paper contributes a Swedish case study, to the ongoing re-vitalization of the dig where you stand realm. Both contributors are leading scholars within the international and Swedish movement to update Sven Lindqvist’s Dig Where You Stand (1978) method and ethos in an increasingly digital world. Within this broader research and activist context, this paper focusses on how place oriented urban-sociological analysis, can contribute to expanding and diversifying our knowledge of downplayed independent performance heritage. First, our focus on Gothenburg, Sweden’s second city, and its suburbs, will help counter previous theatre histories national bias and over-emphasis on source materials from the capital Stockholm. Second, our “local digging” and place analysis will not only charter established venues, but also include previously neglected rehearsal studios and other types of alternative places used by local communities in their performance making. Thus, place orientation enables us to better scrutinize conditions pertinent for independent performance culture, and critically relate them to shifts in urban and cultural policies. Third, as memory strongly connects with place, interviews involving performers and their artistic practices within a diversity of cultural hubs, will contribute new knowledge challenging previous elitist and excluding theatre historiography. The research is conducted within the Swedish research project Expansion and Diversity: Digitally mapping and exploring independent performance in Gothenburg 1965–2000, situated at the University of Gothenburg.

  • 2016

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • It has been 20years since Neil Smith published his classic The New Urban Frontier. In this paper we argue for the continuing relevance of his concepts by analysing the development of a new exclusive residential area (New Kvillebäcken) in the Gustaf Dalén area, a re-purposed industrial site on the edge of the central city of Gothenburg, Sweden. We show how the early millennial plans to create a new city district—Älvstaden (River City)—involved a redrawing of the city map that changed the conditions for this former industrial area from symbolically peripheral (though geographically central) to attractive, but insufficiently exploited, central city land, thus producing a ‘rent gap’. In our reading of Neil Smith’s concept of the urban frontier, we emphasise the close relationship between the frontier mythology that rationalises redevelopment as inevitable through stigmatisation—and the movements of capital—how and where rent gaps are created. The urban frontier creates an analytical space to unravel how the joint forces of the elite (in our case, the close cooperation between private real estate owners and the municipality of Gothenburg) displace long-time inhabitants in urban spaces such as the Gustaf Dalén area to accomplish more financially profitable land use.
