  • Event-triggered pinning control of complex networks with switching topologies
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 53rd annual IEEE Conference on Decision and Control. - 9781479977468 ; , s. 2783-2788
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the problem of eventtriggered pinning control for the synchronization of networks of nonlinear dynamical agents onto a desired reference trajectory. The pinned agents are those that have access to the reference trajectory. We consider both static and switching topologies. We prove that the system is well posed and identify conditions under which the network achieves exponential convergence. A lower bound for the rate of convergence is also derived. Numerical examples demonstrating the effectiveness of the results are provided.

  • Urban Consolidation Centres : On Relationships between Customer Needs and Services in City Logistics
  • 2018
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Urban Consolidation Centres (UCCs) are often conceived as an enabler to alleviate negative effects associated with distribution of goods in cities, such as traffic congestion and hazardous emissions. UCCs not only have the potential to reduce these effects but also provide alternative distribution solutions by introducing new transhipment points. Despite their potential, UCCs often fail to be self-supporting and are often dependent on subsides, which is not considered to be sustainable in the long run. In response, this thesis takes its point of departure in the two business models elements value propositions and target customers. A business model is often viewed as an enabler to generate revenue and UCCs have the potential to generate revenue by offering services to their customers, and the customers pay for the services. To understand how customers can benefit from UCCs and provide arguments why they should use these, it is important to understand the relationship between customers’ needs and the services UCCs can provide. The purpose of this thesis is to identify and describe the potential relationship between needs of UCC customers and UCC services. The research in the thesis is both explorative and descriptive, where a first step is to identify customer needs, UCC services, and value propositions. The descriptive part is to describe them and it is also the foundation for understanding the relationship between customer needs and UCC services. Through the analysis and discussion, multiple customer needs are identified and described for seven customer groups and the UCC operator; all of which could be considered customers of UCCs. The thesis also adds to the UCC literature with three new identified UCC services: e-commerce with used products, advertisement, and registration in computer system. The outcome of the analysis also provides illustrations of how customer needs can be matched with UCC services. For the most studied customer group, receiver of goods, a total of 29 different matches were identified, which illustrates the possibilities but also the complexity of the relationships. To understand the relationship, three different types of gaps were also identified that have implications for future research. The main contributions to research and the UCC literature in particular are enlargement of the scope of customers and the illustration of the relationships between customer needs and UCC services. The illustrations include contributions such as identifying, mapping and describing the customer needs, UCC services, and value propositions. An important first step is to understand how customer needs and UCC services can be linked, and this thesis provides examples of how this can be achieved. Viewing every stakeholder as a potential customer opens up the opportunity to fulfil their needs and the potential to generate revenue, which in turn could close the gap in the problem of non-self-supporting UCCs. Furthermore, with self-supporting UCCs, the number of freight vehicles can be reduced and this may lead to more attractive cities with less traffic congestion and lower emissions.

  • Valfusk i Sverige? Allmänhetens syn på oegentligheter vid svenska val
  • 2023
  • In: Statsvetenskaplig Tidsskrift. - 0039-0747. ; 125:4, s. 1009-1034
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • A fundamental precondition for the legitimacy of democracy is a high level of trust in the electoral process. It is therefore concerning that the number of appeals regarding electoral fraud has increased, that allegations of frauds circulate on social media, and that research indicates that a significant portion of the Swedish population does not fully trust that elections are conducted in a correct manner. At the same time, there is a lack of studies examining the nature of electoral distrust and the prevalence of conspiratorial beliefs regarding Swedish elections. Hence, the purpose of this study is to investigate (a) the extent of belief in irregulari-ties related to vote counting and ballot placement, (b) whether the proportion of those believing in such irregularities changes during an election campaign, and (c) the factors driving belief in conspiratorial claims of electoral fraud. The results of a panel study conducted during the 2022 election campaign indicate that the major-ity does not believe in conspiratorial claims of electoral fraud. However, there is a minority—characterized by a high degree of conspiracy thinking—who believes irregularities are common during Swedish elections. Furthermore, the results sug-gest that other explanatory factors for belief in electoral fraud include the use of right-wing alternative media and sympathy towards the Sweden Democrats.

  • Control of Multi-Agent Systems with Event-Triggered Cloud Access
  • 2015
  • In: Proceedings of the 14th annual European Control Conference. - : IEEE. - 9783952426937 ; , s. 954-961
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper investigates a multi-agent formation control problem with event-triggered control updates and additive disturbances. The agents communicate only by exchanging information in a cloud repository. The communication with the cloud is considered a shared and limited resource, and therefore it is used intermittently and asynchronously by the agents. The proposed approach takes advantage of having a shared asynchronous cloud support while guaranteeing a reduced number of communication. More in detail, each agent schedules its own sequence of cloud accesses in order to achieve a coordinated network goal. A control law is given with a criterion for scheduling the control updates recursively. The closed loop scheme is proven to be effective in achieving the control objective and a numerical simulation corroborates the theoretical results.

  • Event-Triggered Pinning Control of Switching Networks
  • 2015
  • In: IEEE Transactions on Control of Network Systems. - 2325-5870. ; 2:2, s. 204-213
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • This paper investigates event-triggered pinning control for the synchronization of complex networks of nonlinear dynamical systems. We consider networks described by time-varying weighted graphs and featuring generic linear interaction protocols. Sufficient conditions for the absence of Zeno behavior are derived and exponential convergence of a global normed error function is proven. Static networks are considered as a special case, wherein the existence of a lower bound for interevent times is also proven. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

  • Critical factors for viable business models for urban consolidation centres
  • 2017
  • In: Research in Transportation Economics. - : Elsevier. - 0739-8859 .- 1875-7979. ; 64, s. 36-47
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Abstract Although urban consolidation centres (UCC) worldwide have improved urban freight distribution and reduced externalities, other UCC initiatives have not materialised due to problems such as for example, business model limitations. All the same, researchers have rarely described business model components relevant to city logistics. In response, the purpose of this article is to analyse critical factors for viable business models of city logistics initiatives involving UCCs. Following an extensive literature review and multiple-case study of five initiatives with UCCs, we identified seven critical factors of viable city logistics business models: the ability to scale up and down the UCC solution; an ability to continuously develop and adapt to a dynamic environment; the important entrepreneurial role of the initiator as well; the acknowledgment of society; ability to innovate new services; logistics and supply chain management competence; and the ability to take full advantage of advanced IT. All seven factors describe continuously redeveloped business models seeking to seize new and unexpected opportunities, yet also indicate that city logistics systems require local authorities and municipalities to act as initiators, enablers, and customers. The models also underscore differences between purely commercial and purely municipal city logistics initiatives.

  • Customer Benefits in City Logistics : Towards Viable Urban Consolidation Centres
  • 2020
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Urban Consolidation Centre (UCC) is a city logistics initiative that has the potential to increase the efficiency of urban freight delivery systems while reducing negative environmental and social effects caused by freight vehicles. One important issue that have hindered longevity of this initiative is its viability, both the financial viability and acceptance from affected stakeholders (also called UCC customers). The UCC customers in focus in this thesis are receivers of goods and municipalities. To satisfy both types of stakeholders, their requests and, in particular, the benefits they can gain from using UCCs need to be studied. The types of benefits to be given priority differ between the stakeholders, where municipalities strive towards more societal benefits, and the main goals of receivers are an increase in efficiency and financial sustainability. In response, the purpose of this thesis is to deepen the understanding of benefits for customers of UCCs, with a particular focus on customer needs and benefits that UCCs can provide. This thesis consists of five appended papers, each of which uses a different methodology. The methodologies applied in the papers include a multiple interview study of five UCCs, a surveybased interview study of retail stores, and a case study of an operating UCC. Regarding customer needs, this thesis takes the customer perspective, in order to identify needs that UCCs can meet. The results presented in this thesis also highlight the importance for UCCs to give priority to meeting customer needs that stem from some type of problem. Regarding benefits that UCCs can provide, the thesis suggests how different types of benefits can be distinguished. This can give guidance to UCC operators regarding which benefits should be given priority in communication with UCC customers. However, the results highlight that it is also important to understand the situation of the customer to be able to communicate the most relevant benefits that UCCs can provide. Furthermore, the results illustrate different improvement areas that can affect the benefits for UCC customers. These identified areas are: improved understanding by both UCCs and its customers of each other’s operation, communication, developing a more holistic view for UCC customers, and developing new UCC services to match customer needs. The results provide a foundation for customer needs that UCCs can meet, and the benefits that UCCs can provide. This foundation can be important for UCC customers to gain a better understanding of what a UCC is and how it can affect their operation, something that this thesis contributes towards. It can also assist initiators of UCCs to determine which customer needs they should focus on. Lastly, the results and contribution also address the potential role of municipalities, and it is argued that their role should change from a more supportive role to that of a paying UCC customer. All of these aspects can increase the probability that a UCC, when established becomes viable.

  • Association of sweetened carbonated beverage consumption during pregnancy and ADHD symptoms in the offspring : a study from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa)
  • 2022
  • In: European Journal of Nutrition. - : Springer. - 1436-6207 .- 1436-6215. ; 61:4, s. 2153-2166
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • PURPOSE: Intrauterine exposures influence offspring health and development. Here we investigated maternal intake of sweetened carbonated beverages (SCB) during pregnancy and its association with ADHD symptoms in the offspring.METHODS: This study was based on the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and the Medical Birth Registry of Norway. Maternal diet mid-pregnancy was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). All mothers who responded to the FFQ and a questionnaire when their child was 8 years of age were included (n = 39,870). The exposure was defined as maternal intake (daily servings) of SCB, using no daily intake as reference. Outcome was offspring ADHD symptoms, evaluated as a continuous standardized ADHD score and as a binary outcome of six or more ADHD symptoms vs. five symptoms or less. Associations were analysed using log-binomial regression and linear mixed regression models with adjustment for covariates.RESULTS: The adjusted regression coefficients for the standardized ADHD offspring symptom score were 0.31 [95% confidence intervals (0.001, 0.62)] and 0.46 (0.15, 0.77) for maternal daily intake of ≥ 1 glasses of SCB, when the models included adjustments for total energy intake or energy intake from other sources than SCBs and sweet drinks, respectively. The corresponding adjusted relative risks were 1.16 (1.004, 1.34) and 1.21. (1.05, 1.39) for drinking ≥ 1 glasses daily.CONCLUSION: In a large pregnancy cohort with offspring followed until 8 years of age, we found an association between maternal daily intake of SCB and offspring ADHD symptoms. These results suggest a weak positive relationship between prenatal exposure to SCB and offspring ADHD.

  • Intrinsic Ligand Effect Governing the Catalytic Activity of Pd Oxide Thin Films
  • 2014
  • In: ACS Catalysis. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 2155-5435. ; 4:10, s. 3330-3334
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • High-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and density functional theory calculations have been combined to study methane oxidation over Pd(100). The measurements reveal a high activity when a two-layer PdO(101) oriented film is formed. Although a one-layer PdO(101) film exhibits a similar surface structure, no or very little activity is observed. The calculations show that the presence of an oxygen atom directly below the coordinatively unsaturated Pd atom in the two-layer PdO(101) film is crucial for efficient methane dissociation, demonstrating a ligand effect that may be broadly important in determining the catalytic properties of oxide thin films.

  • Sentinel lymph node localization and staging with a low-dose of superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) enhanced MRI and magnetometer in patients with cutaneous melanoma of the extremity - The MAGMEN feasibility study
  • 2022
  • In: European Journal of Surgical Oncology. - : Elsevier BV. - 0748-7983. ; 48:2, s. 326-332
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background: In patients with melanoma, sentinel lymph node (SLN) status is pivotal for treatment decisions. Current routine for SLN detection combines Technetium99m (Tc99) lymphoscintigraphy and blue dye (BD). The primary aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of using a low dose of superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) injected intracutaneously to detect and identify the SLN, and the secondary aim was to investigate if a low dose of SPIO would enable a preoperative MRI-evaluation of SLN status. Methods: Patients with melanoma of the extremities were eligible. Before surgery, a baseline MRI of the nodal basin was followed by an injection of a low dose (0.02–0.5 mL) of SPIO and then a second MRI (SPIO-MRI). Tc99 and BD was used in parallel and all nodes with a superparamagnetic and/or radioactive signal were harvested and analyzed. Results: Fifteen patients were included and the SLNB procedure was successful in all patients (27 SLNs removed). All superparamagnetic SLNs were visualized by MRI corresponding to the same nodes on scintigraphy. Micrometastatic deposits were identified in four SLNs taken from three patients, and SPIO-MRI correctly predicted two of the metastases. There was an association between MRI artefacts in the lymph node and the dose SPIO given. Discussion: It is feasible to detect SLN in patients with melanoma using a low dose of SPIO injected intracutaneously compared with the standard dual technique. A low dose of SPIO reduces the lymph node MRI artefacts, opening up for a non-invasive assessment of SLN status in patients with cancer. © 2022 The Authors

  • Scientific mobilization of keystone actors for biosphere stewardship
  • 2022
  • In: Scientific Reports. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 2045-2322. ; 12
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The biosphere crisis requires changes to existing business practices. We ask how corporations can become sustainability leaders, when constrained by multiple barriers to collaboration for biosphere stewardship. We describe how scientists motivated, inspired and engaged with ten of the world’s largest seafood companies, in a collaborative process aimed to enable science-based and systemic transformations (2015–2021). CEOs faced multiple industry crises in 2015 that incentivized novel approaches. New scientific insights, an invitation to collaborate, and a bold vision of transformative change towards ocean stewardship, created new opportunities and direction. Co-creation of solutions resulted in new knowledge and trust, a joint agenda for action, new capacities, international recognition, formalization of an organization, increased policy influence, time-bound goals, and convergence of corporate change. Independently funded scientists helped remove barriers to cooperation, provided means for reflection, and guided corporate strategies and actions toward ocean stewardship. By 2021, multiple individuals exercised leadership and the initiative had transitioned from preliminary and uncomfortable conversations, to a dynamic, operational organization, with capacity to perform global leadership in the seafood industry. Mobilizing transformational agency through learning, collaboration, and innovation represents a cultural evolution with potential to redirect and accelerate corporate action, to the benefit of business, people and the planet.
