  • L’analyse de la communication non verbale: Les dangers de la pseudoscience en contextes de sécurité et de justice
  • 2020
  • In: Revue Internationale de Criminologie et de Police Technique et Scientifique. - 1424-4683. ; 73:1, s. 15-44
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • For security and justice professionals, the thousands of peer-reviewed articles on nonverbal communication represent important sources of knowledge. However, despite the scope of the scientific work carried out on this subject, professionals can turn to programs, methods and approaches that fail to reflect the state of science. The objective of this article is to examine (i) concepts of nonverbal communication conveyed by these programs, methods and approaches, but also (ii) the consequences of their use. To achieve this objective, we describe the scope of scientific research on nonverbal communication. A program (SPOT; “Screening of Passengers by Observation Techniques”), a method (the BAI; “Behavior Analysis Interview”) and an approach (synergology) that each run counter to the state of science are examined. Finally, we outline five hypotheses to explain why some organizations in the fields of security and justice are turning to pseudoscience and pseudoscientific techniques. © 2020, Polymedia Meichtry SA. • Human Capital and the Internationalisation of Venture Capital Firms
  • 2007
  • In: International Entrepreneurship and Management Journal. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1554-7191 .- 1555-1938. ; 3:1, s. 109-125
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • We examine the neglected area of internationalisation by VCs. Using a representative sample of 195 VCs, we show that the decision of a European VC firm to invest internationally is driven by its human resources. Having more VC executives in general and more VC executives with previous international experience in specific, results in a higher probability of investing internationally. In contrast, more VC executives with experience in the VC industry or with an engineering background lead to a higher probability of remaining domestic.

  • Experiences and psychological health among children exposed to online child sexual abuse – a mixed methods study of court verdicts
  • 2021
  • In: Psychology, Crime & Law. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1068-316X .- 1477-2744. ; 27:2, s. 159-181
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Cases of online child sexual abuse (OCSA) are increasing dramatically in number, but research on this relatively new type of crime and its psychological consequences is limited, leading to major challenges for the judiciary. The present mixed methods study investigated 98 legal cases of OCSA (children aged 7-17 years,M = 12.3,SD = 1.92) in Swedish District Courts to see if and how children's experiences and psychological health were described in the written verdicts. The results revealed that the children's psychological health was mentioned in less than half (48.0%) of the cases. Thematic analyses identified several potential vulnerability factors (e.g. poor psychological health, low self-esteem, loneliness) and several potential psychological consequences (e.g. psychological suffering, self-harming and/or suicidal behavior, internalized self-loathing, impaired relationships) among the children, all of which were similar to what research has shown among victims of offline CSA. The sexual abuse situation was often perceived as threatening, and many children felt that they had no other choice than to comply. In addition, the sexually abusive act was depicted as distressing and sometimes painful. In light of these findings, we suggest that OCSA should not be viewed as essentially different or less severe than offline CSA.

  • Expression of Smad proteins in human colorectal cancer.
  • 1999
  • In: International journal of cancer. - 0020-7136. ; 82:2, s. 197-202
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Escape from transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta)-induced inhibition of proliferation has been observed in many tumor cells and may contribute to loss of growth control. Smad proteins have been identified as major components in the intracellular signaling of TGF-beta family members. In this study, we examined the expression of receptor-activated, common-mediator and inhibitory Smads by immunohistochemistry in human colorectal cancers. We found increased expression of receptor-activated Smads in a fraction of the tumor cells, while no immunostaining for Smad2, Smad3 or Smad5 and only occasional staining for Smad1/8 was found in epithelial mucosa of normal colon. No or only weak staining for receptor-activated Smads, common-mediator Smad4 and inhibitory Smads was observed in the tumor stroma. Common-mediator Smad4 and inhibitory Smads were detected in cells of both tumor and normal tissues. We observed a distinct pattern of Smad4 immunostaining of epithelial cells along colon crypts, with high expression in zones of terminal differentiation. Our data show selective up-regulation of receptor-activated Smad proteins in human colorectal cancers and suggest involvement of Smad4 in differentiation and apoptosis of surface epithelial cells of normal crypts.

  • Electroporation therapy for T1 and T2 oral tongue cancer
  • 2011
  • In: Acta Oto-Laryngologica. - : Informa Healthcare. - 0001-6489 .- 1651-2251. ; 131:6, s. 660-664
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Conclusion: Electroporation therapy appears to be a safe treatment achieving excellent local tumor control and very good functional results in our study and it should be further clinically evaluated. Objectives: The objectives of this study were to assess local tumor control, survival, and effects on speech and eating after treatment of tongue cancer with electroporation therapy, a new local therapeutic modality. In this approach intracellular accumulation of a chemotherapeutic agent is achieved by using a locally applied electrical field. Methods: Fifteen patients with primary T1 and T2 oral tongue cancer were treated with electroporation therapy with intratumorally administered bleomycin. Postoperative radiotherapy was performed when the tumor infiltration was 5 mm or more. The follow-up time was 24 months for the surviving patients and 20.4 months overall. The effects on eating and speech were assessed using the PSS-HN scale and voice recordings. Results: No local recurrence was recorded in any patient during the follow-up. Three patients died, two from progressive regional disease. Of the 12 surviving patients, 2 patients had regional recurrence and 10 patients including the 5 patients treated with EPT alone were tumor-free both locally and regionally at the last follow-up. The functional outcome for speech and eating were very good.

  • Electroporation therapy of skin cancer in the head and neck area.
  • 2010
  • In: Dermatologic Surgery. - : Ovid Technologies (Wolters Kluwer Health). - 1076-0512 .- 1524-4725. ; 36:8, s. 1245-50
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Electroporation therapy is a new cancer treatment modality in which a locally applied electrical field enhances cell membrane permeability, allowing greater intracellular accumulation of a chemotherapeutic agent.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of electroporation therapy in treating basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas of the skin.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six patients with skin cancer of the head and neck were treated using electroporation therapy with intratumorally injected bleomycin. Orbital growth, facial nerve proximity, or proximity to cartilage of the external meatus complicated four of these tumors. The intention was curative. The follow-up period was 24 months and included biopsies after 8 weeks.RESULTS: In four of the six patients, one treatment was enough to eradicate the tumor. In one patient, the tumor persisted even after a second treatment with electroporation therapy. A septal cartilage perforation was the only major complication. The cosmetic results were very satisfactory. One additional recurrence was recorded 6 months after the follow-up periodCONCLUSION: Electroporation therapy is a promising new cancer treatment that should be further evaluated as an alternative to surgery, especially in complicated skin cancer.

  • Monitoring nanoparticle formation during laser ablation of graphite in an atmospheric-pressure ambient
  • 2004
  • In: Applied Physics A. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0947-8396 .- 1432-0630. ; 79:3, s. 537-542
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Excimer laser ablation of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) was performed at atmospheric pressure in an N2 and in an air ambient. During the ablation, nanoparticles condensed from the material ejecta, and their size distribution was monitored in the gas phase by a Differential Mobility Analyzer (DMA) in combination with a Condensation Particle Counter (CPC). Size distributions obtained at different laser repetition rates revealed that the interaction between subsequent laser pulses and formed particles became significant above 15 Hz. This interaction resulted in laser heating, leading to considerable evaporation and a decrease in the size of the particles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that approximately 8% nitrogen was incorporated into the CNx particles generated in the N2 ambient, and that the nitrogen was mostly bonded to sp3-hybridized carbon. Monodisperse particles were also deposited and were analyzed by means of Raman spectroscopy to monitor size-induced effects.

  • The syndication of venture capital investments in Europe: evidence from five European countries
  • 2002
  • In: Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research: Proceedings of the Twenty-Second Annual Entrepreneurship Research Conference. - 0910897239
  • Conference paper (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Financial theory, resource-based theory and deal flow generation are used to explain synd ication practices among venture capitalists in Belgium, France, The Netherlands, Sweden and the UK. Similar motives drive syndication in the five countries: the desire to share risk and increase portfolio diversification is more important than the desire to access additional intangible resources or deal flow. When resource-based motives are more important, however, the propensity to syndicate increases. Syndication practices are more important in young venture capital (VC) firms and in VC firms with more portfolio companies.

  • Venture capitalists' Decision to Syndicate
  • 2006
  • In: Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice. - : SAGE Publications. - 1042-2587 .- 1540-6520. ; 30:2, s. 131-153
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Financial theory, access to deal flow, selection, and monitoring skills are used to explain syndication in venture capital firms in six European countries. In contrast with U.S. findings, portfolio management motives are more important for syndication than individual deal management motives. Risk sharing, portfolio diversification, and access to larger deals are more important than selection and monitoring of deals. This holds for later stage and for early stage investors. Value adding is a stronger motive for syndication for early stage investors than for later stage investors, however. Nonlead investors join syndicates for the selection and value-adding skills of the syndicate partners.
