  • Vardagslivets finansialisering
  • 2016

  • Trade Union Cooperation in Europe : Patterns, Conditions, Issues
  • 2020
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This open access book discusses transnational trade union cooperation in Europe – its forms, focuses, conditions, and obstacles. It provides an overview of existing trade union cooperation and includes detailed analyses of two specific questions: the debates on statutory minimum wages and the Posting of Workers Directive. Drawing on empirical research, the authors take a comparative approach, considering national industrial relations regimes as well as individual sectors. With the ongoing processes of integration in Europe, it has become increasingly important for unions to cooperate with regard to employers and EU institutions. The authors illustrate the interconnections between national and European industrial relations, and explore the process of European integration in labour markets. Illustrating the potential for and difficulties involved in deepening trade union cooperation across Europe, this work is a vital read for trade unionists, researchers and students interested in European trade unionism and labour markets.

  • Accounting for Personal Overindebtedness : Debtors' Accounts in Applications for Debt Relief at the Swedish Enforcement Authority
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Sociological Research Online. - : Sage Publications. - 1360-7804. ; 17:4, s. 114-124
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper aims to describe and understand the accounts given in applications for debt relief/adjustment in relation to the 'question situation' that overindebted person stand before in their encounters with Swedish authorities. The analysis is based on the sociology of accounts and is made against the background of previous research on overindebtedness in the Nordic countries. The paper shows that the accounts given by debtors include examples of 'refusals' and 'denials', but mainly comprise narratives and accounts centred around giving 'justifications' and 'excuses' focusing on external circumstances (illness, unemployment, divorce, bankruptcy), helplessness, or a lack of knowledge or intent (others causing the debt, or problems of addiction). The applications also contain some 'concessions', 'pledges' and 'appeals' by which the debtors try to show that they are improving in taking economic responsibility and deserve debt relief. The analysis thereby shows which accounts are considered legitimate, but also that the framing cues defining and delimiting the question situation are too weak to produce uniform forms of accounting. Many applicants for debt relief respond to a wide definition of the question situation - one that relates to self-image and social identity.

  • Accounting for personal overindebtedness: Debtors’ accounts in applications for debt relief at the Swedish Enforcement Agency
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 10th Conference of the European Sociological Association.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • While the Swedish economy is recovering fast from the financial crisis of 2008-9, many households are still in severe and increasing debt problems, not least because of credit driven private consumption. Even though the increase of overindebted persons is coming to a halt at app. 5 % of the population, the number of applications to the Swedish Enforcement Agency for debt release is still increasing (appr 1 %). This paper is part of a project studying the process of debt relief/adjustment in Sweden and analyses 60 such applications. The aim is to describe and understand the accounts given in these applications in relation to the “question situation” that the over-indebted person stands before in their encounters with the authorities. The analysis is based on the sociology of accounts and is made against the background of previous research on the experiences of personal overindebtedness in the Nordic countries. The paper show that the accounts given by debtors include some few examples of “refusals” and “denials”, but mainly comprise of narratives and accounts centred around giving “justifications” and “excuses”, focusing on external circumstances (illness, unemployment, divorce, bankruptcy) helplessness, or a lack of knowledge or intent (others causing the debt or problems of addiction). The applications also contain “concessions”, “pledges” and “appeals” by which the debtors are trying to show that they are improving in taking economic responsibility and deserving a debt relief. The analysis thereby shows which accounts are considered being legitimate, both by the debtors and by the municipal budget- and debt advisers that are to help debtors in applying for debt relief. In addition, the analysis shows that the accounts and narratives given by the debtors often go far beyond what they are asked to explain by the Enforcement Agency, thus indicating that debtors have difficulty in bracketing explanations and accounts produced to acquire social and moral acceptance and re-establishment.

  • Discretion in the “Backyard of Law”: Case Handling of Debt Relief in Sweden
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Professions and Professionalism. - Oslo : OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University. - 1893-1049. ; 3:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores discretion in welfare professional work. The aim is to analyse what room for discretionary decision-making that exist in case handling of debt relief at the Swedish Enforcement Authority (SEA). The analysis is guided by a conceptual distinction between structural and epistemic aspects of discretion, as well as between substantive and procedural aspects. The data comprises official and internal SEA documents, interviews with management and staff and field notes from observations. The analysis points to a change in the balance between standards and discretion in relation to the on-going formalization of case handling at the SEA, though not in the simplistic sense that discretion is diminished through formalization. When taking into account the different analytical aspects of discretion, it is concluded that discretion is narrowed only in some respects. There is still space for case officers in selecting and interpreting information and assess-ing the conditions regarding subject matter.

  • Standards and discretion in the “backyard of law” – case handling of debt relief at the Swedish Enforcement Authority
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: 26th Conference of the Nordic Sociological Association, 15-18 August 2012, University of Iceland, Reykjavik.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The number of applications for debt relief has been increasing in Sweden during the last ten years. Up until 2006 when a new debt relief law was introduced, the number of rejections was higher than the number of decisions on debt relief. But since then that relation has been inversed and the number of positive decision almost twice as high as the number of rejections. The policy of the enforcement agency during the last years has been, not only to grant debt relief in as many cases as possible given the legal space for maneuver, but also to strengthen both the productivity and the uniformity in the decision making process. This paper analyses the case handling in the debt relief process at the Swedish Enforcement Authority. The focus is on the relation between legal standards and professional discretion in case-handling. In addition to this general theme, the paper also discusses the relation between individual and collective interpretive practices, local variation and uniformity, and the translation of the debtors’ accounts and other information into legally binding decisions. The empirical base of the paper is organizational documents from the Enforcement Agency, ethnographic participation at meetings, and interviews with staff and management.

  • The co-creation of performance – salary talks as part of performance appraisal
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: not published.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • During the last decades the Swedish wage formation has been transformed from being based on an idea of solidarity to an individual oriented system based on individual performance. The system relays on local solutions of general national agreements among the labour market parties. Thereby, employers need to set up system for how to evaluate individual performance. Such local systems are often based on a dialogue between the manager and the co-worker, and the dialogue can be supported by organizational tools such performance appraisal criteria. This paper is based on an interest in performance from a micro-perspective and, therefore, takes its starting point in the dialogue between the manager and the co-worker. The aim is to analyze how individual performance and the role of actors is created in salary talks between managers and co-workers as part of the merit salary increase process. A relational perspective on leadership and co-workership may help us understand how the persons involved in these local dialogues and the tools that are brought into this process can shape how performance is interpreted and defined in practice. Such interpretations may include what actions, competences, behavior and values that are seen as important with the organization, and thus, are part of a process of (e)valuation. In order to meet the aim, a study of three public organizations has been conducted. The field materials consist of interviews with HR, managers and co-workers, documents (criteria etc.) and a survey sent to employees in the three public organizations. The analysis shows the importance of understanding the interrelationship between managers, co-workers and tools when individual performance is discussed locally and how the dialogue between managers and co-workers not only reflects but also construct the understanding of performance that is valued locally.

  • Emotional smoothness and confidence building : boundary spanners in a civil-military collaboration context
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Work Organisation and Emotion. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1740-8938 .- 1740-8946. ; 6:3, s. 223-239
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study illuminates a deeper understanding of the processes of confidence building and emotion management among boundary spanners from organisations with a bureaucratic structure in a multinational civil-military operational context. Twenty-one informants (mainly military officers) were interviewed. They had a variety of experiences and occupational roles in civil-military collaboration contexts. A grounded theory analysis of interview data yielded a model according to which the most central aspects of civil-military collaboration are confidence building, maintaining existing confidence, avoiding distrust and rebuilding damaged confidence. The study shows that boundary spanners strategically utilise a variety of emotion management strategies in order to fulfil the demands laid upon them by their collaborating counterparts in the hostile environment and by their own organisation. Three interrelated dimensions of smoothness were identified: cultural, structural and smoothness in risky situations. By acting ‘smoothly’, an adaption to the dynamic environment can be achieved. The proposed model is compared to existing writings on emotional labour and self-presentation.

  • 2021
  • Ingår i: European journal of industrial relations. - : Sage Publications. - 0959-6801 .- 1461-7129. ; 27:3, s. 269-288
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article highlights the importance of organizational resources and individual capabilities for interactions and relationships among social partners in European sectoral social dialogue committees (SSDCs). We use an actor-centred approach to investigate work programme setting in the hospital and metalworking SSDCs. Our research reveals differences in how European social partner organizations coordinate and integrate members in SSDCs. In hospital, European Union (EU)-social partners build bridges that span otherwise separate actors or groups. The findings suggest that the absence of bridging efforts can lead to the dominance of a few actors. In metalworking, small cohesive groups are more effective in forming close networks and determining work programmes. While work programmes in hospital represent issues which are on national agendas, in metalworking, they focus mainly on EU policy areas.

  • OPTICAL AND PHOTOPHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE OXAZOLE YELLOW DNA PROBES YO AND YOYO
  • 1994
  • Ingår i: Journal of Physical Chemistry. - : American Chemical Society (ACS). - 0022-3654 .- 1541-5740. ; 98:40, s. 10313-10321
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The photophysical properties of the optical DNA probe YOYO (homodimeric derivative of oxazole yellow) have been characterized in terms of the monomeric part, the YO chromophore. In aqueous solutions YO is virtually nonfluorescent but upon binding to DNA its fluorescence quantum yield is strongly increased. A similar enhancement of the fluorescence is observed for YO in the viscous solvent glycerol. The high fluorescence quantum yield of YO, when bound to DNA or in a viscous solution, is proposed to be a result of decreased rotational mobility around the internuclear bridge between the two aromatic ring systems. This hypothesis is based on similar values of the activation energies for the temperature-dependent nonradiative decay processes (E(A) = 53 kJ/mol) and viscous flow (E(A) = 63 kJ/mol), suggesting related rate-limiting mechanisms. A single electronic transition is found to be responsible for the intense visible absorption band. This conclusion is based on the observation of an essentially wavelength-independent reduced linear dichroism and similarly wavelength independent fluorescence anisotropy, and the fact that the emission spectrum is very nearly a mirror image of the absorption spectrum. The conclusion is further supported by quantum mechanical calculations (CNDO/S). By combination of measurements of fluorescence anisotropy of YO in glycerol and linear dichroism of YO in a stretched poly(vinyl alcohol) film, the transition moment of the strong visible absorption band was found to be nearly long axis polarized, in agreement with the CNDO/S calculations. The low-energy electronic transition and its polarization direction in the YO chromophore remain essentially unperturbed in the YOYO dye, suggesting that the results obtained for the excited state of the YO chromophore are applicable also to YOYO. One difference, though, is that in aqueous solutions the two YO chromophores of YOYO interact with each other, forming an internal dimer, resulting in a distorted absorption spectrum.

  • The Herschel-Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI)
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Astronomy and Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 518, s. L6-
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aims: This paper describes the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far-Infrared (HIFI) that was launched onboard ESA's Herschel Space Observatory in May 2009. Methods: The instrument is a set of 7 heterodyne receivers that are electronically tuneable, covering 480-1250 GHz with SIS mixers and the 1410-1910 GHz range with hot electron bolometer (HEB) mixers. The local oscillator (LO) subsystem comprises a Ka-band synthesizer followed by 14 chains of frequency multipliers and 2 chains for each frequency band. A pair of auto-correlators and a pair of acousto-optical spectrometers process the two IF signals from the dual-polarization, single-pixel front-ends to provide instantaneous frequency coverage of 2 × 4 GHz, with a set of resolutions (125 kHz to 1 MHz) that are better than 0.1 km s-1. Results: After a successful qualification and a pre-launch TB/TV test program, the flight instrument is now in-orbit and completed successfully the commissioning and performance verification phase. The in-orbit performance of the receivers matches the pre-launch sensitivities. We also report on the in-orbit performance of the receivers and some first results of HIFI's operations. Herschel is an ESA space observatory with science instruments provided by European-led Principal Investigator consortia and with important participation from NASA.

  • 2014
Vad betyder pengar i människors liv?

  • Employment relations as networks : Methods and theory
  • 2023
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditional approaches in the wide field of employment relations focused on a small and clearly delineated set of actors, such as trade unions and employers’ organizations, operating within the constraints given by formal, nationally confined institutions. It is becoming increasingly clear that traditional approaches are insufficiently able to account for employment relations processes and outcomes in a world wherein formal institutions are being rapidly transformed and partially dissolved, national boundaries become porous, and the sheer number of actors involved is increasing substantially. A shift in perspective is necessary, past the nationally bounded actor-institution dichotomy, towards an understanding of employment relations as fundamentally mediated by complex and emergent networks that connect a multitude of actors within and between countries. This volume provides a seminal starting point for such a paradigm shift by applying theories and methodologies from social network analysis to the study of employment relations. It develops a theoretical toolkit of mechanisms that operate within networks and shape employment relations processes and outcomes, such as wages, labour market policies and labour conflicts. It brings together insights from various projects that investigate the structure, functioning and impact of networks in employment relations through quantitative and qualitative methods. It will be of particular interest to students and scholars of employment relations across business and management, economics, political science, and sociology disciplines, as well as those interested in social networks. Managers, trade unions, employers’ organizations and state authorities at national and international levels will find it helpful in understanding how networks shape their world.

  • Ingår i: British Journal of Criminology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0007-0955 .- 1464-3529. ; 56:3, s. 515-536
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines a general trend towards the ‘decentring’ of the policing of economic and White-collar crime in Sweden in recent decades. As a theoretical point of departure, we discuss how the ‘decentred policing’ concept can link the theoretical approaches of regulation and policing studies. We then analyse five empirical cases in which private actors have been given duties and incentives to report others’ crimes, in order to give a detailed account of the expansion and effects of the decentring of business and finance policing. The five cases concern the policing of bankruptcy crimes, money laundering, company management crimes, market abuse and insider dealings, and illegal cartels. The article ends by discussing some possible causes and consequences of this tendency.

  • 2011. - 2
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract

    • This article looks at the hospital European Sectoral Social Dialogue Committee (SSDC) through a Communityof Practice (CoP) theoretical lens. Based on a 2‐year project, qualitative in‐depth interviews at the European level and in five Member states, and participant observation of the hospital SSDC, we propose a shift from traditional institutional andresource‐based accounts and provide a learning and knowledge‐focused understanding of this specific area of European industrial relations. Interpreting the SSDCs as a CoP sheds new light on the role of power relations, participation and informal activities among members and on how they work together;this, we find, can alert those interested in more effective functioning of the European Sectoral Social Dialogue on how to strengthen this supra‐national level of industrial relations.

  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Molecules. - : MDPI AG. - 1420-3049. ; 14:8, s. 2699-2716
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The effect of three different types of polymer chain structures on the polymer release from hydrophilic matrix tablets was investigated by comparing a synthetic semi-crystalline linear polymer (PEO), a branched amorphous polysaccharide (dextran) and an amorphous substituted cellulose derivative (HPMC). The polymer release rates for tablets containing mixtures of high and low molecular weight grades in different ratios were determined by using a modified USP II method and a SEC-RI chromatography system. The results showed that independent of polymer type: (i) plots of the release versus time had similar shapes, (ii) the release of long and short polymer chains was equal and no fractionation occurred during the release and (iii) the release rate could be related to the average intrinsic viscosity of the polymer mixtures. This confirms the hypothesis that the release rate can be related to a constant viscosity on the surface of the hydrophilic matrix tablet and that it is valid for all the investigated polymers.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Abstract:A systematic study of the dissolution of dry, polydisperse poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) samples, obtained from mixtures of low-molecular-weight and high-molecular-weight PEO, was made. During the dissolution process, the individual release of the low- and high-molecular-weight fractions was monitored. The high-molecular-weight/low-molecular-weight ratio controls the release rate, and the fraction of high-molecular-weight polymers dominates the effect on the overall release rate in mixed PEO tablets. Both fractions are released at the same rate during the main part of the dissolution process; however, during the initial dissolution period a fractionation occurs. The release rate is not a unique function of the average molecular weight of the polymer, but also depends on the polydispersity. By contrast, the average dimension of a polymer coil, as given by the intrinsic viscosity, gives a good prediction of the release rate irrespective of the polydispersity or details of the molecular weight distribution.

  • Tuning the polymer release from hydrophilic matrix tablets by mixing short and long matrix polymers

  • Ingår i: Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences. - : Elsevier BV. - 1520-6017 .- 0022-3549. ; 94:4, s. 759-769
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this work a rotating disc method was developed for studying the dissolution process of bimodal polymer tablets, whose dissolution rates have been tuned by mixing low-molecular weight and high-molecular weight samples of poly(ethylene oxide) in various proportions. The tablets were prepared along different routes, by mixing the polymer fractions as powders or by mixing on a molecular level so that the effect of tablet heterogeneity could be assessed, but also by purifying the original powders so the effect of additives could be determined. When the mixed tablet was dominated by the low-molecular weight fraction, a faster dissolution was observed for the tablet mixed at the powder level. In those cases small gel pieces were released from the tablet during the whole dissolution process. As long as no gel piece erosion was observed, it did not matter if the two polymer fractions were blended on the molecular level or on the powder level, the steady-state dissolution rate was the same. The presence of small amounts of additives in the nonpurified commercial samples had no significant effect on the tablet dissolution within the uncertainty of the experiment.

  • 2001
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation is a case study of the Swedish banking crisis in the early 1990s. It also treats general theoretical questions of the relation between the economy and society. The aim of the study is to give an account of interpretations of the banking crisis in public discourse, and of the societal attempts to steer the credit market by way of public opinion, political-administrative and legal means. The dissertation is divided into two parts, corresponding to the two aims. The focus of the first part is on interpretive disagreements over crisis-definitions, causal explanations and policy-packages. The account is based on a computer-aided qualitative analysis of 342 editorials/articles published during 1990-1995, supplemented with secondary sources. The main conclusion is that five competing interpretive packages dominated the public debate. In the beginning the scope of the crisis and the critique against the banks were rejected in a downgrading package and a defence package, advocated by the authorities, experts and the banks. These packages were later replaced by a market-critical fairness/ moral package and two variants of a market-advocating efficiency/functional package. Advocates of the former were actors from the political left, framing problems, causal explanations, and policy recommendations in resonance with traditional social democratic policy and radical political economy. Behind the latter stood the political centre-right politicians/editors, the banks, and economists, framing their interpretations in resonance with neoclassical economics and political neoliberalism. The focus of the second part is on the reactions to the crisis among the public and the customers, and within the administrative, legal and political systems. The analysis is based on media documents, survey data, official reports and committee reports from the Swedish parliament. In conclusion, the reactions in the political system corresponded to the antagonisms of the debate, with the centre-right parties advocating a pro-market policy in conflict with a more interventionist stance from the radical left and green parties, and with the social democrats in the middle. The public reaction comprised a loss of confidence and an increase in consumer organisation, and the media representations of public opinion were articulated mainly through the market-critical stance with strong political and moral indignation due to a lack of adequate administrative and legal sanctions against the banks. The analysis also confirmed that the legal processes met with considerable difficulties, which gave rise to “legal-offensive” claims from politicians and authorities. These were met, however, by more “defensive” claims from the official commission investigating the legal framework of the credit market, advocating a system of enforced and supervised self-regulation. A central conclusion was that the conflicts concerned not only the political dimension left– right, but also the opposition between system-integrative functional perspectives and those representing claims based on the social-integrative principles of the “life world” (morals and solidarity).

  • Becoming a winner but staying the same : identities and consumption of lottery winners
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: The American journal of economics and sociology. - : John Wiley & Sons. - 0002-9246 .- 1536-7150. ; 70:1, s. 187-209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses how large lottery winnings are experienced and used by the winners. The study draws on a survey of 420 Swedish winners, which is analyzed against the background of previous research from the USA and Europe. The analyses show that winners are cautious about realizing any dreams of becoming someone else somewhere else. This result contradicts theories suggesting that identities are being liquefied by the commercially driven consumer culture in affluent Western societies. In contrast, the article concludes that winners generally try to stay much the same, but on a somewhat higher level of consumption. The critical situation that large winnings produce is generally met by an attempt to hold on to one’s identity and social relations. In addition, the article shows that lump sum winners tend to save and invest large parts of their winnings, compared with winners of monthly installments who are more likely to spend on leisure and consumption. These results indicate that “wild” lump sums make winners “tame” their winnings more firmly, whereas “domesticated” monthly instalments can be spent more thoughtlessly without changing identity or becoming an unfortunate winner.

  • Bringing environmentalism home : Children’s influence on family consumption in the Nordic countries and beyond
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Childhood. - : Sage Publications. - 0907-5682 .- 1461-7013. ; 17:1, s. 129-147
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article discusses children as contributors to sustainable ecological development. The aim of the article is to develop a framework for researching two questions: What are the prerequisites for children to become responsible environmentalists? What actual and potential influence do children have on their family’s consumption? Three theoretical perspectives are elaborated in relation to relevant empirical research: children as cosmopolitan actors and world citizens, children as ‘subjects of responsibilization’ in relation to the discourse on sustainable development and children as actors influencing family negotiations about consumption. The article concludes by suggesting methodological implications that follow from this framework.
