  • Bilateral Prophylactic Mastectomy in Swedish Women at High Risk of Breast Cancer: A National Survey.
  • 2011
  • In: Annals of surgery. - : Lippincott Williams and Wilkins; 1999. - 1528-1140 .- 0003-4932. ; 253:6, s. 1147-1154
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE:: This study attempted a national inventory of all bilateral prophylactic mastectomies performed in Sweden between 1995 and 2005 in high-risk women without a previous breast malignancy. The primary aim was to investigate the breast cancer incidence after surgery. Secondary aims were to describe the preoperative risk assessment, operation techniques, complications, histopathological findings, and regional differences. METHODS:: Geneticists, oncologists and surgeons performing prophylactic breast surgery were asked to identify all women eligible for inclusion in their region. The medical records were reviewed in each region and the data were analyzed centrally. The BOADICEA risk assessment model was used to calculate the number of expected/prevented breast cancers during the follow-up period. RESULTS:: A total of 223 women operated on in 8 hospitals were identified. During a mean follow-up of 6.6 years, no primary breast cancer was observed compared with 12 expected cases. However, 1 woman succumbed 9 years post mastectomy to widespread adenocarcinoma of uncertain origin. Median age at operation was 40 years. A total of 58% were BRCA1/2 mutation carriers. All but 3 women underwent breast reconstruction, 208 with implants and 12 with autologous tissue. Four small, unifocal, invasive cancers and 4 ductal carcinoma in situ were found in the mastectomy specimens. The incidence of nonbreast related complications was low (3%). Implant loss due to infection/necrosis occurred in 21 women (10%) but a majority received a new implant later. In total, 64% of the women underwent at least 1unanticipated secondary operation. CONCLUSIONS:: Bilateral prophylactic mastectomy is safe and efficacious in reducing future breast cancer in asymptomatic women at high risk. Unanticipated reoperations are common. Given the small number of patients centralization seems justified.

  • 2012
  • In: ChemCatChem. - : Wiley. - 1867-3880 .- 1867-3899. ; 4:12, s. 2082-2089

    • A total of 21 amino acid based ligands including hydroxy amide, thioamide, and hydroxamic acid functionalities, respectively, were combined with [Ru(p-cymene)Cl2]2 and [RhCp*Cl2]2, and used as catalysts for the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of four different heteroaromatic ketones in 2-propanol. The reactions were performed on a Chemspeed automated high-throughput screening robotic platform. Optimal catalysts were identified for the individual heterocyclic substrate classes. Based on these results, the formal syntheses of the antidepressant drugs (R)-fluoxetine and (S)-duloxetine were conducted by using the found catalysts in the key reaction step, which results in high isolated yields (94?%) and excellent product enantioselectivities (>99?% ee) of the formed 1,3-amino alcohols.

  • Selective reduction of heteroaromatic ketones: A combinatorial approach
  • 2011
  • Conference paper (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • The enantioselective reduction of prochiral ketones is a most productiveway towards enantio enriched secondary alcohols used in the preparation of biologically active compounds. There are numerous transition metal catalyzed methods for this transformation, particularly based on Ru(II)-and Rh(I)-complexes, but there is a demand for a larger substrate scope. Heteroaromatic ketones are traditionally more challenging substrates. Normally a catalyst is developed for one benchmark substrate, and asubstrate screen is made with the best performing catalyst. Using this methodology, there is a high probability that for different substrates, another catalyst could outperform the one used. We have executed a multiple screen, containing a variety of different ligands together with both Ru and Rh, and heteroaromatic ketones to fine-tune, and find the optimum catalyst depending on the substrate. The acquired information was used to synthesize known, biologically active compounds, where the key reduction steps were performed with high enantioselectivities and yields.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Longstanding uncertainty surrounds the selection of surgical protocols for the closure of unilateral cleft lip and palate, and randomised trials have only rarely been performed. This paper is an introduction to three randomised trials of primary surgery for children born with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). It presents the protocol developed for the trials in CONSORT format, and describes the management structure that was developed to achieve the long-term engagement and commitment required to complete the project.METHOD: Ten established national or regional cleft centres participated. Lip and soft palate closure at 3-4 months, and hard palate closure at 12 months served as a common method in each trial. Trial 1 compared this with hard palate closure at 36 months. Trial 2 compared it with lip closure at 3-4 months and hard and soft palate closure at 12 months. Trial 3 compared it with lip and hard palate closure at 3-4 months and soft palate closure at 12 months. The primary outcomes were speech and dentofacial development, with a series of perioperative and longer-term secondary outcomes.RESULTS: Recruitment of 448 infants took place over a 9-year period, with 99.8% subsequent retention at 5 years.CONCLUSION: The series of reports that follow this introductory paper include comparisons at age 5 of surgical outcomes, speech outcomes, measures of dentofacial development and appearance, and parental satisfaction. The outcomes recorded and the numbers analysed for each outcome and time point are described in the series.TRIAL REGISTRATION: ISRCTN29932826.

  • Advancing European entrepreneurship research : entrepreneurship as a working attitude, a mode of thinking and an everyday practice
  • 2014. - 1
  • Editorial collection (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The objective with the Strategic Interest Group in Entrepreneurship (Sig Entrepreneurship) of the European Academy of Management (Euram) is to be the leading research community for engaged entrepreneurship scholars in Europe. The Sig Entrepreneurship aims at promoting research and networking interests for individuals and research groups focused on entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial styles of management. This is done by providing a wide-ranging, engaged and internationally-focused forum to discuss and develop research and practice in the field. We put a distinct focus on the key European feature – 'context matter' – why we try in all activities to promote and stimulate what 'European' might mean in any given context. It means different things in different contexts – and that is the whole point – and thereby the key strength of the European takes on the matter as we see it. This is our idea of the European perspective on entrepreneurship. The tradition of European scholars on entrepreneurship and Smes system has been consolidated during the last three decades and an increasingly distinct European school of thought has emerged as a consequence. This development provides a solid base for the future development of the field where Europe and its entrepreneurship scholars will play an increasingly prominent role. With this concern, this book has been managed, gathering the best contributions of our annual meeting re-edited and improved. The central theme is presenting entrepreneurship understood as a working attitude, a mode of thinking, a concrete everyday practice and increasingly an identity marker for ways of being and living within liquid modernity. Entrepreneurship is nowadays a broadly endorsed and accepted signifier for forms of organizing that targets human, organizational and economic renewal and growth.

  • Experimental Mg I oscillator strengths and radiative lifetimes for astrophysical applications on metal-poor stars - New data for the MgI b triplet
  • 2007
  • In: Astronomy & Astrophysics. - : EDP Sciences. - 0004-6361 .- 1432-0746. ; 461:2, s. 767-773
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Context. The stellar abundance ratio of Mg/Fe is an important tool in diagnostics of galaxy evolution. In order to make reliable measurements of the Mg abundance of stars, it is necessary to have accurate values for the oscillator strength (f- value) of each of the observable transitions. In metal-poor stars the MgI 3p-4s triplet around 5175 angstrom (Fraunhofer's so-called b lines) are the most prominent magnesium lines. The lines also appear as strong features in the solar spectrum. Aims. We present new and improved experimental oscillator strengths for the optical MgI 3p-4s triplet, along with experimental radiative lifetimes for six terms in Mg I. With these data we discuss the implications on previous and future abundance analyses of metal-poor stars. Methods. The oscillator strengths have been determined by combining radiative lifetimes with branching fractions, where the radiative lifetimes are measured using the laser induced fluorescence technique and the branching fractions are determined using intensity calibrated Fourier Transform (FT) spectra. The FT spectra are also used for determining new accurate laboratory wavelengths for the 3p-4s transitions. Results. The f-values of the MgI 3p-4s lines have been determined with an absolute uncertainty of 9%, giving an uncertainty of +/- 0.04 dex in the log g f values. Compared to values previously used in abundance analyses of metal-poor stars, rescaling to the new values implies an increase of typically 0.04 dex in the magnesium abundance.

  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • In 80 patients with polycythaemia vera (PV) a total of 108 venous blood samples were obtained and analysed for EDTA-plasma erythropoietin (EPO) concentration. At the time of study 21 of the PV patients were newly diagnosed and had prior to blood sampling neither received phlebotomy treatment nor therapy with myelosuppressive agents; these subjects had a mean plasma EPO concentration of 0.5+/-0.9 IU/L. Thirty-seven patients treated with phlebotomy only had a mean plasma EPO concentration of 2.5+/-2.9 IU/L. The mean plasma EPO concentrations for 26 patients treated with hydroxyurea, 13 patients treated with radiophosphorous and 11 patients given a combination of myelosuppressive agents were 8.9+/-8.0, 10.9+/-12.6 and 7.2+/-7.4 IU/L, respectively. Untreated patients and patients on phlebotomy only had significantly lower values for plasma EPO than patients on therapy with myelosuppressive drugs. This finding persisted also after a correction for differences in haemoglobin levels had been introduced. Thereby, the present results would suggest a difference in the EPO feedback system in untreated and phlebotomised PV patients compared to PV patients treated with myelosuppressive agents.

  • Nuclear and mitochondrial DNA quantification of various forensic materials
  • 2006
  • In: Forensic Science International. - : Elsevier BV. - 0379-0738 .- 1872-6283. ; 164:1, s. 56-64
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Due to the different types and quality of forensic evidence materials, their DNA content can vary substantially, and particularly low quantities can impact the results in an identification analysis. In this study, the quantity of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA was determined in a variety of materials using a previously described real-time PCR method. DNA quantification in the roots and distal sections of plucked and shed head hairs revealed large variations in DNA content particularly between the root and the shaft of plucked hairs. Also large intra- and inter-individual variations were found among hairs. In additions DNA content was estimated in samples collected from fingerprints and accessories. The quantification of DNA on various items also displayed large variations, with some materials containing large amounts of nuclear DNA while no detectable nuclear DNA and only limited amounts of mitochondrial DNA were seen in others. Using this sensitive real-time PCR quantification assay, a better understanding was obtained regarding DNA content and variation in commonly analysed forensic evidence materials and this may guide the forensic scientist as to the best molecular biology approach for analysing various forensic evidence materials.

  • Biocompatibility of PEDOT/biomolecular composites intended for neural communication electrodes
  • Other publication (pop. science, debate, etc.)abstract
    • Electrodes of the conjugated polymer poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) have been shown to possess very attractive electrochemical properties for functional electrical stimulation (FES) or recording in the nervous system. Biomolecules already present in nervous tissue, added as counter ions in PEDOT electropolymerisation, could be a route to further improve the biomaterial properties of PEDOT, eliminating the need of surfactant counter ions like docedyl benzene sulphonate (DBS) or polystyrene sulphonate (PSS) in the polymerisation process. Such PEDOT/biomolecular composites using heparin, or hyaluronic acid, have been electrochemically investigated in a previous study and have been shown to retain the attractive electrochemical properties already proven for PEDOT:PSS.   The aim of the present study is to evaluate biocompatibility of these PEDOT/biomolecular composites in vitro and also evaluate PEDOT:heparin biocompatibility in cortical tissue in vivo. Hereby, we also aim to identify a suitable test protocol, that can be used in future evaluations when further material developments are made.   Material toxicity was first tested on cell lines, both through a standardised agarose overlay assay on L929 fibroblasts, and through elution tests on human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells. Subsequently, a biocompatibility in vivo test was performed using PEDOT:heparin coated platinum probes implanted in the cerebral cortex of Sprague-Dawley rats. Tissue was collected at three weeks and six weeks of implantation and evaluated by immunohistochemistry.   No cytotoxic response was seen to any of the PEDOT:biomolecular composites tested here. Furthermore, elution tests were found to be a practical and effective way of screening materials for toxicity and had a clear advantage over the agarose overlay assay, which was difficult to apply on other cell types than fibroblasts. Elution tests would therefore be recommendable as a screening method, at all stages of material development. In the in vivo tests, the stiffness of the platinum substrate was a significant problem, and extensive glial scarring was seen in most cases irrespective of implant material. However, quantification of immunological response through distance measurements from implant site to closest neuron, and counting of macrophage densities in proximity to polymer surface, was comparable to those of platinum controls. These results indicate that PEDOT:heparin surfaces were as compatible with cortical tissue as pure platinum controls.

  • Strategisk miljöbedömning för hållbar samhällsplanering : Slutrapport från forskningsprogrammet SPEAK
  • 2018
  • Reports (other academic/artistic)abstract
Men hur fungerar miljöbedömning i planeringen?

  • Threshold-automated CT measurements of muscle size and radiological attenuation in multiple lower-extremity muscles of older individuals
  • 2020
  • In: Clinical Physiology and Functional Imaging. - : WILEY. - 1475-0961 .- 1475-097X. ; 40:3, s. 165-172
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Muscle atrophy and fat infiltration, two indicators of deconditioning and weakness in elderly frail patients, are typically assessed by means of manual image analysis from computed tomography (CT) scans. As this time-consuming image analysis limits its wider use in clinical studies, the use of tissue thresholds to semi-automatically assess muscle composition has been suggested. Here, we aimed to investigate the relationship between manual and semi-automated analysis of both cross-sectional area (CSA) and radiological attenuation (RA), in multiple muscles of the lower extremities in aged (77 +/- 6 years) sedentary individuals (n = 40). The participants underwent CT scans of their lower limbs, including hip, thigh and calf muscles. The subsequent analysis of CSA and RA was conducted using both manual segmentation and semi-automatic thresholds (-30 to +150 Hounsfield units). Automated measurements were generally strongly correlated with manually encircled CSA in all muscle groups (R = 0.79-0.99, p < .05) and shortened the analysis time by 70% (p < .05). In m. iliopsoas, however, the CSA became overestimated (15%, p < .05) with thresholded measurements, while the assessment of both CSA and RA was underestimated in muscles with high-fat content (i.e., the gluteal muscles) and in individuals with high-fat infiltration. In conclusion, using the semi-automated technique with conventional thresholds is a time-saving method that delivers accurate gross size of the muscle groups, particularly in the thigh. However, caution should be exercised when using semi-automated techniques for assessing CSA and fat infiltration in muscles with high-fat content.

  • Enhancing Health Among Drug Users in Prison
  • 2004
  • Doctoral thesis (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Four interrelated studies on drug users in prison are presented within the framework of a proposed model for approaching the enhancement of health for persons that builds on an existential view of prisoners’ needs, as well as the risk management and “good lives” perspectives. Risk management is the major focus in current offender rehabilitation based on research on “what works,” which has shown that focusing treatment on risk factors termed “criminogenic needs,” such as impulsivity, poor family relations and drug abuse, reduces recidivism by 10-15 percentage points. The “good lives” perspective proposes that offender rehabilitation should go beyond risk management and also address non-criminogenic needs such as autonomy, relatedness and competence as foundations for building personally meaningful lives. Study I explores the assessment of drug use problems, and describes the psychometric evaluation of the Drug Use Disorders Identification Test (DUDIT), a newly developed 11-item test for quick screening of drug-related problems. Studies II-IV explore treatment for offenders in prison identified as drug users. Study II is a randomized controlled trial of two auricular acupuncture treatments for men and women in prison, inconclusive with regard to point specificity but showing that participants in both groups reported reduced symptoms of discomfort and improved night-time sleep. Study III evaluates the Reasoning & Rehabilitation program, an internationally widespread cognitive-behavioral program for groups of offenders. Results showed significant pro-social short-term changes in sense of coherence, impulsivity and attitudes towards the criminal justice system, as well as a 25% lower risk of reconviction among program completers compared to matched controls. However, the quasi-experimental nature of the study precludes any certainty regarding program effects; a selection bias whereby more motivated program participants are recruited could explain the findings. Study IV is a pilot project exploring the special needs of a subgroup of drug-using inmates with psychiatric and/or violent co-morbidity. Inmates housed in psychiatric prison units were offered long-term auricular acupuncture treatment. Half of the 22 inmates in the study received treatment twice a week for over eight weeks, and those treated over 25 times had lower psychopharmacological medication levels than untreated controls. Studies I-IV address individual facets of a proposed model for enhancing health among drug users in prison. The health enhancement model approaches offender rehabilitation from perspectives of existential psychology, good lives and risk management. Specific definitions of physical, social, psychological/personal and spiritual needs indicate a framework according to which prison treatment can help drug-using offenders find ways to secure healthy need satisfaction.

    • We report a new set oftheoretical transition probabilities in Y II, obtained using a multiconfiguration relativistic Hartree-Fock method including core polarization. The overall quality of the calculations is assessed by comparisons with new and previous lifetime measurements. In this paper, we report new measurements of five lifetimes in the 4d5p and 5s5p configurations, in the energy range of 32 048-44 569 cm(-1), obtained by the time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence method. A similar theoretical model, applied to Y III, leads to results in good agreement with new laser measurements of two 5p levels obtained in this work and with previous beam-foil results for 5d and 6s levels. An extensive set of oscillator strengths is also proposed for Y III.

    • We report laboratory measurements of oscillator strengths for 44 transitions in the Mn T spectrum covering the wavelength range 209-2780 nm. Nine energy level lifetimes have been measured using time resolved laser-induced fluorescence (LIF). The lifetimes have been combined with branching fractions measured by Fourier transform spectroscopy to obtain absolute oscillator strengths. In total, 24 of these oscillator strengths are measured for the first time, including transitions in the previously unobserved infrared region above 2.0 mu m.

    • We report experimental oscillator strengths for 88 Ti I transitions covering the wavelength range 465-3892 nm, 67 of which had no previous experimental values. Radiative lifetimes for 13 energy levels, including the low energy levels 3d(2)(F-3) 4s4p ((3)p) z(5)D(j)degrees have been measured using time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence. Intensity-calibrated Ti I spectra have been measured using Fourier transform spectroscopy to determine branching fractions for the decay channels of these levels. The branching fractions are combined with the radiative lifetimes to yield absolute transition probabilities and oscillator strengths. Our measurements include 50 transitions in the previously unobserved infrared region lambda > 1.0 mu m, a region of particular interest to the analysis of cool stars and brown dwarfs.

    • We have developed a multifocal diffractive-optical fluorescence correlation spectroscopy system for parallel excitation and detection of single tetramethylrhodamine biomolecules in microarrays. Multifocal excitation was made possible through the use of a 2 × 2 fan-out diffractive-optical element with uniform intensity in all foci. Characterization of the 2 × 2 fan-out diffractive-optical element shows formation of almost perfect Gaussian foci of submicrometer lateral diameter, as analyzed by thermal motion of tetramethylrhodamine dye molecules in solution. Results of parallel excitation and detection in a high-density microarray of circular wells show single-biomolecule sensitivity in all four foci simultaneously.

The basic idea is to reveal underlying components in the fMRI data that have maximum autocorrelation. The tool for accomplishing this task is Canonical Correlation Analysis. The proposed method is more robust and much more computationally efficient than independent component analysis, which previously has been applied in fMRI.

  • Retinal thinning and brain atrophy in early MS and CIS
  • 2020
  • In: Acta Neurologica Scandinavica. - : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Inc.. - 0001-6314 .- 1600-0404. ; 142:5, s. 418-427
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Background Optical coherence tomography (OCT) could be complementary to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain in monitoring course of multiple sclerosis (MS) and clinically isolated syndrome (CIS). Thinning of neurons in ganglion cell-inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) measured by OCT is assumed to be associated with brain atrophy. Objectives To evaluate association of GCIPL with brain parameters detected by quantitative MRI (qMRI) and MR-spectroscopy (MRS) in early MS and CIS. Methods Seventeen newly diagnosed MS and 18 CIS patients were prospectively included. The patients were assessed at baseline as well as at 1 year follow-up by OCT, qMRI and MRS. Brain parenchymal and myelin volumes (BPV, MYV respectively) and the corresponding fractions (BPF, MYF) were measured with qMRI. Metabolites including myo-inositol (myo-Ins) were measured in the normal-appearing white matter (NAWM) using MRS. T-tests and ANOVA were used to analyze group differences, and linear regression models to evaluate association of GCIPL with BPV, MYV and myo-Ins after correlation analysis. Results Disease activity reflected by lesions on MRI and presence of CSF oligoclonal IgG bands were more prominent in MS compared to CIS. GCIPL, BPV, MYV, BPF and MYF were reduced, while concentration of myo-Ins was increased in MS compared to CIS. Follow-up showed consistency of thinner GCIPL in MS compared to CIS. GCIPL thinning correlated with reduced BPV and MYV (P < .05 for both), but with increased myo-Ins (P < .01). Conclusions Significant GCIPL thinning occurs in early MS and is associated with enhanced brain inflammation and atrophy.

  • Plasma erythropoietin by high-detectability immunoradiometric assay in untreated and treated patients with polycythaemia vera and essential thrombocythaemia.
  • 1998
  • In: European journal of haematology. - 0902-4441. ; 60:5, s. 278-82
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • By using an immunoradiometric method with a stated detection limit of < or =1 IU/l (stated normal reference limit in adults 3.7-16 IU/l) we determined EDTA-plasma erythropoietin (EPO) in 58 patients with polycythaemia vera (PV) and 49 patients with essential thrombocythaemia (ET). At the time of blood sampling, 20 of the PV patients were newly diagnosed and untreated, 23 were treated by phlebotomy only, and 30 also received myelosuppressive treatment (with 32P, hydroxyurea or alpha-interferon). Of the ET patients 24 were untreated and 28 received myelosuppressive therapy. For comparison plasma EPO was also determined in 10 patients with pseudopolycythaemia (PP). In this latter group the results for plasma EPO agreed well with the cited normal reference limits. The majority of untreated PV patients (12/20) had undetectable plasma EPO concentration, and the remainder all had values below the lower normal reference limit. Plasma EPO in PV was not significantly influenced by phlebotomy therapy. Twelve of the 24 untreated ET patients (50%) had plasma EPO values below the reference interval (undetectable in 2 patients). The mean EPO concentration was significantly lower in PV patients receiving phlebotomy therapy than in patients with untreated ET. In the total material of PV and ET treated with myelosuppressive agents the PV patients showed significantly lower values for EPO concentration than did patients with ET. The present results support the view that EPO measurements by high-detectability methods are diagnostically useful and should be included in the panel of new criteria for the diagnosis of PV.

  • Acquired haemophilia A and Kaposi's sarcoma in an HIV-negative, HHV-8-positive patient : a discussion of mechanism and aetiology
  • 2010
  • In: Acta Haematologica. - : S. Karger AG. - 0001-5792 .- 1421-9662. ; 124:1, s. 40-43
  • Journal article (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • BACKGROUND: Acquired haemophilia A (AHA) is a rare bleeding disorder caused by an imbalance in the immune system leading to the production of factor VIII antibodies. In half of the cases, the underlying cause is not known. CLINICAL HISTORY: We report on a patient with AHA and Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), which is caused by the human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8). The patient presented with appendicitis and developed several severe post-operative haemorrhages. He spent 3 months in intensive care due to long and difficult infections. While recuperating on the ward, the patient developed KS in the lower extremities. He had a positive HHV-8 infection. DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION: Due to its latency and replication in the lymphoid system, HHV-8 is an ideal candidate for causing an imbalance in the immune system in susceptible patients. Our conclusion is that AHA was caused or prompted by the HHV-8 infection. Since HHV-8 viral infection is often subclinical, viral testing might be an important tool in acquired haemophilia diagnostics even when viral symptoms are absent.

  • Tungsten spectroscopy at the Livermore electron beam ion trap facility
  • 2011
  • In: Canadian Journal of Physics. - 0008-4204. ; 89:5, s. 571-580
  • Research review (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The utilization of tungsten spectroscopy for diagnostics of magnetically confined fusion plasmas requires the radiative properties of tungsten ions to be accurately known. At the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a program to gather spectroscopic data on tungsten ions has been initiated with the purpose to study spectral signatures and identify candidate fusion plasma diagnostics. In this paper, an overview of recent results from the Livermore WOLFRAM spectroscopy project is presented, which includes experimental investigations at the EBIT-I and SuperEBIT electron beam ion traps. In particular, the spectra of highly charged M-and L-shell tungsten ions have been studied. These investigations cover energy measurements of n = 2 to n = 2, 3 transitions in Ne-like W64+ through Li-like W71+ ions and soft X-ray measurements of n = 3 to n = 3, 4 transitions in M-shell ions with emphasis on the Ni-like W46+ and Si-like W60+ through Na-like W63+ ions. The measurements are complemented by atomic-structure calculations and spectral modeling using the Flexible Atomic Code (FAC).
